I’m watching the Wales match instead, as there is something riding on it. Does anyone know if any English channels are showing it? It’s live on S4C (which I’m watching) but it’s all in Welsh obviously.

    Iplayer apparantly
Where? I looked and couldn’t see it advertised anywhere
Ah found it under the sport heading but its just a stream of the S4C Welsh LaNguage coverage, sorry
Is Southgate squandering our talent again?

Multiple intel sources: Baltimore bridge collapse was an “absolutely brilliant strategic attack” on US critical infrastructure - most likely cyber - & our intel agencies know it. In information warfare terms, they just divided the US along the Mason Dixon line exactly like the Civil War.

Second busiest strategic roadway in the nation for hazardous material now down for 4-5 years - which is how long they say it will take to recover. Bridge was built specifically to move hazardous material - fuel, diesel, propane gas, nitrogen, highly flammable materials, chemicals and oversized cargo that cannot fit in the tunnels - that supply chain now crippled.

Make no mistake: this was an extraordinary attack in terms of planning, timing & execution.

The two critical components on that bridge are the two load-bearing pylons on each end, closest to the shore. They are bigger, thicker and deeper than anything else. These are the anchor points and they knew that hitting either one one of them would be a fatal wound to the integrity of the bridge.

Half a mile of bridge went in the river - likely you will have to build a new one. Also caused so much damage to the structural integrity of the bottom concrete part that you cannot see & won’t know until they take the wreckage apart. Structural destruction likely absolute.

    Attack perfectly targeted.

I heard from an impeccable source that it was aliens. There is a secret walkway on the seabed that leads to the Comet Ping Pong Pizzeria and the Grassy Knoll. By blocking the walkway, the aliens hope to stop the Illuminati from meeting and developing Elon Musk's new Infinite Improbability Drive that will be a step-change over the aliens' own technology.

As it was written on an impeccable source (politicalbetting) it must be correct!

Or alternatively: a ship lost control due to power failure and went into a bridge that was insufficiently protected. Accidents happen.

Also, there is some oddness in the descriptions of the civil engineering of the bridge... anchor points, for instance, is a phrase commonly used in suspension or cable-stat bridges, not truss bridges.
Honestly thats all very interesting. I will have to do some more research.
    Look up Occam's Razor first.

For this to be deliberate, there would have to be a conspiracy between the two pilots on board (usually local people), and some of the bridge crew on the ship (probably foreign). They would have had to have faked a power outage at the correct point, and ensured that the current and drift speed would take it into the bridge pier and not any of the other items in the water, such as what appear to be the bases of power pylons (*).

Alternatively, a ship had power issues at a very critical moment, when there was little time or room to manoeuvre. This happens a lot; most of the time the ships have plenty of time to fix the issues. One or two ships *sink* each week at sea.

See why the latter is much more probable (though less exciting) than the former?

(*) Which appear to be *much* better protected than the bridge piers...

On the other hand, what about sources saying that Tay Bridge Disaster was due to conspiracy between Elders of Zion, Fenian Brotherhood, Salvation Army, Black Hand and proto-CIA???

Power issues at a very critical moment is the cyber attack theory. Listen we dont know for sure what really happened but given the importance of Baltimore Port questions need to be asked.

Did you vote for Obama in 2012?

    https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSBRE82P0JI/

President Barack Obama was caught on camera on Monday assuring outgoing Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that he will have "more flexibility" to deal with contentious issues like missile defense after the U.S. presidential election.

Obama, during talks in Seoul, urged Moscow to give him "space" until after the November ballot, and Medvedev said he would relay the message to incoming Russian president Vladimir Putin.
That was at a time when relations with Russia were much better . Not sure what point you’re trying to prove . Your man in the USA is happy to blow Putin in 2024 after his invasion of Ukraine .
The invasion of the Donbas and annexation of Crimea happened under Obama after he had indicated his flexibility to Putin and after he mocked Mitt Romney for saying that Russia was the biggest threat.

The failed approach of trying to use sanctions to influence Putin's decisions is a legacy of Obama and Merkel's foreign policy. Trump is just being used as an old-fashioned scapegoat.

The Cyberattack 'theory' is really, really stoopid. With an elongated 'ooooo'. The ship had just done a 180-degree turn from its dock with tugboats; to get it to hit the bridge you would need to cut the power at just the right moment. even then, an alert crew *might* have done something to prevent it. A few degrees in the rudder and it would hit somewhere else. AIS is laggy and not accurate enough.

If you want to cause a disaster, there're much better ways.

Then there's the timing: early in the morning is when the bridge is quietest.

Edit: And Baltimore Port is important because it is busy. And as it is busy, it gets more ships in. Which makes it more likely for a ship to have an incident there.

Ridiculous to blame Trump for the invasion of Ukraine. That was absolutely down to the weakness of Obama, Cameron, Merkel, etc, in 2014.

However, there is no doubt that the reelection of Trump would be a disaster for anyone concerned about the threat from Russia and China. Trump is essentially transactional and the likes of Putin and Xi can play him like a fiddle.

I could respect vaguely the notion of voting for Trump/supporting him in 2016.

But this bloke wanted to over-turn an election and has said this time he will rule as a dictator. It is not over-stating it to say he may well end the US as a democracy if gets his way.

Calling him anything other than a nutjob who should be in jail, would make me question the sanity of anyone. So as Leon seems to kiss Trump's arse at every turn, I can only assume Leon is either a nutjob himself or doesn't believe in democracy or democratic principles. In either case, we should all be very troubled that there are people in this country who lean such a way.

But he engaged in a conspiracy with fake electors to overturn an election. At which point he went from person who I disagree with, but if voters want him, then I'm just going to have to live with it, to holy fuck: this guy is dangerous.

What is the correct response when faced with this?

Second busiest strategic roadway in the nation for hazardous material now down for 4-5 years - which is how long they say it will take to recover.

They’re doing the same here in Didcot and Wantage.

Last time: Con 50, LD 31, Lab 15.
Local Government: Labour couldn’t even find candidates for most of the wards in the constituency (stood 8 out of 27, won 3).

In the Vale part (more than half of it), they had 0 elected from 0 candidates. We haven’t seen a Labour councillor in the Vale since a single Councillor in 2011; before that, they had two in 1999. Meanwhile, LDs have been running both Vale and South Oxfordshire since 2019 and even took Didcot Town Council for the first time ever last year.

Yet apparently, according to the Labour leaflet, we’re dishonest in claiming we could win and they are apparently the clear challengers to the Tories.

Trump has been arselicking Putin since 2016. Putin would celebrate a Trump win in November . That’s the reality!

So how "rare" are Republican mayoral election victories in New York City?

GOPers won in NYC elections of:

    1933, 1937, 1941 = Fiorello La Guardia
    1965 = John Lindsey
    1993, 1997 = Rudolph Giuliani
    2001, 2005, 2009 = Michael Bloomberg

    Only a minority of elections . . . but hardly rare . . .

Safe to say the promotion of Jonathan Gullis hasn't gone down brilliantly among some of his colleagues

One says he was "cheaply bought for his gushing whatsapp" and that it's "a spectacularly stupid decision and shows how tone deaf No 10 is."

    Another MP texts "🤭🤣🤭🤣🤭🤣"

Another MP says: "I wondered why he’d been so sycophantic of late."

A former minister adds: "We all did."

    Another former minister messages: "Demented."

The worst thing about these ads is the American voiceover.
Not the worst thing but pretty bloody awful all the same.
I think the badness is deliberate - insinuate it into the minds of the electorate, like an earworm. Then hope that 10% of the message lingers, which it might. It’s from the Cummings playbook.
It's the Cummings playbook, but the actors are from the Cornley Polytechnic Dramatic Society. Which is why it's coming out terrible.

If I were Andy Street, I'd be spitting feathers right now.

There was that line in the Sunday Times a few weekends ago, the crisps don’t decide the marketing strategy. The marketing people have gone feral, which would be bad enough if they were good at their jobs.
Yeh, "the Birmingham is a shit-hole now please re-elect the mayor" is a real winning strategy.

Is that one of those machine-made voiceovers that are so popular these days? Some of the intonation is wrong, such as at "pass on". I suppose it could be someone unused to reading.

You are on record as saying that if the majority opinion in this country on the death penalty were ever respected, then you would leave the country, so your own belief in democracy is clearly not absolute.
    Eh?
    1. People democratically vote to bring back the death penalty.
    2. I, a citizen, choose to leave the country.
    3. I absolutely believe in democracy, and in my right to live elsewhere.

Ridiculous to blame Trump for the invasion of Ukraine. That was absolutely down to the weakness of Obama, Cameron, Merkel, etc, in 2014.

If the death penalty was brought back, absolutely.

I do not understand why I should stay in a country that introduced it. William Glenn seems to think that if a country does something, I have to not only agree with it but also can never do anything about it. What utter lunacy.

Labour are leafleting and canvassing in Guildford with dodgy bar charts (that's our job) showing they are the main challengers. Honestly they would rather the Tories hold Guildford by trying to thwart the LDs. Why not concentrate on sensible targets (admittedly not a lot around here).

    Okayyyy….
I think they are using the Electoral Calculus MRP that does show Didcot & Wantage going to Labour.
A problem with MRP is that the statistical models might be quite good overall, but they do completely wacky things on the margins.

Good betting opportunity, though, as constituency markets open up. When an MRP for a constituency smells wrong, it almost certainly is wrong and there is an opportunity.

The situation with the baltimore bridge is interesting and giving rise to all sorts of conspiracy theories. I have seen this on X.

    Attack perfectly targeted.

    https://x.com/laralogan/status/1772675651599770093?s=20

You scoff - perhaps rightly - but it is far from impossible that this is Chinese psy ops

We KNOW that the Chinese are attacking American infrastructure. Including “manufacturing” and “transport”. These are not fever dreams, it is the case

    https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/feb/08/chinese-hack-us-transportation-infrastructure

In the last weeks Boeing has been in free fall, as it were, and now a crucial bridge goes down

One is allowed to say Hmmmm
There are far, far better and easier ways for China to cause chaos than this - which was hardly a slam-dunk it would work. And it minorly impacts global trade - which is something China is rather keen on.

    You are a fool.
    Indeed.

    In a bunker in China

“We will kick the round eyes in goolies.

By cutting off the flow of containers into America! So our exports to them will collapse.

And just as America is re-shoring massive amounts of manufacturing and considering the vulnerability of global supply lines.

    Muha ha ha!”
Nonetheless we know that the Chinese are already targetting US infrastructure, namely transport, manufacturing, aerospace, high tech, trying to hack into it all. I don’t think they are doing this to make it BETTER, do you?

So what are they attacking? Boeing looks like a pretty good target to me. A company already in trouble, in a manufacturing arena where China s desperate to muscle in, and compete with or even replace the Airbus/Boeing duopoly

So how "rare" are Republican mayoral election victories in New York City?

GOPers won in NYC elections of:

    1933, 1937, 1941 = Fiorello La Guardia
    1965 = John Lindsey
    1993, 1997 = Rudolph Giuliani
    2001, 2005, 2009 = Michael Bloomberg

    Only a minority of elections . . . but hardly rare . . .

Didn't Bloomberg technically win as an Independent in 2009 having left the GOP? I take your point that it's not that rare though.

AP (via Seattle Times) - Trump is selling ‘God Bless the USA’ Bibles for $59.99 as he faces mounting legal bills

Former President Donald Trump is now selling Bibles as he runs to return to the White House.

Trump, who became the presumptive Republican nominee earlier this month, released a video on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday urging his supporters to buy the “God Bless the USA Bible,” which is inspired by country singer Lee Greenwood’s patriotic ballad. Trump takes the stage to the song at each of his rallies and has appeared with Greenwood at events.

“Happy Holy Week! Let’s Make America Pray Again. As we lead into Good Friday and Easter, I encourage you to get a copy of the God Bless the USA Bible,” Trump wrote, directing his supporters to a website selling the book for $59.99. . . .

To be fair to them - it's a stronger definition than Keir has given.

The subtitles are in English though, but it's a bit delayed obviously as it's been done live!
Does channel4.com not allow you to select the English version?

    You are a fool.

Is all that is needed in response to every post Leon makes.

How he is employed by a media organisation is genuinely baffling to me. He writes like a 9 year old.
The 'media organisation' he is employed by is a joke, that is owned by fools, and whose employees are fools, and which is read by proto-fools.

Therefore he fits right in. :)
And there's nothing intrinsically wrong with that. Some of it's even amusing. It only goes wrong when a) people take that sort of journalism seriously as a description of the world and b) when journalists take themselves seriously as people who should be running the country instead of just writing amusing barbs about it.

So how "rare" are Republican mayoral election victories in New York City?

GOPers won in NYC elections of:

    1933, 1937, 1941 = Fiorello La Guardia
    1965 = John Lindsey
    1993, 1997 = Rudolph Giuliani
    2001, 2005, 2009 = Michael Bloomberg

    Only a minority of elections . . . but hardly rare . . .

Didn't Bloomberg technically win as an Independent in 2009 having left the GOP? I take your point that it's not that rare though.
as per wiki re: 2009 NYC election:

The incumbent Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, an independent who left the Republican Party in 2008, won reelection on the Republican and Independence Party/Jobs & Education lines with 50.7% of the vote . . .

SSI - So Bloomberg got votes AS a Republican, despite having left the GOP.

Note that under "Fusion" electoral system in NY State (also Oregon) candidates may run as nominees of more than one party, with votes from different party "lines" being added together for final result.

Why not just watch with the commentary silent. It's not as if you need it when you can see for yourself.

It's not on Channel 4. It's S4C (which you can get on the iplayer too).

    The audio is Welsh only.
