    What have you got against the white poppy, really? A friend wears one - she's a pacifist and wants to remember the dead but feels the red poppy is too tied up with pride in the war wfforts over the years. There's nothing political in her views.

    I don't agree with her myself (it seems to me that the official ceremonies do stress the losses rather than the wars), but she's a passionate Christian and trying to find a way to reconcile her beliefs with the need to remember the dead. Is that such an awful thing?
    Well Nick the meaning of the red poppy is established as the being the only thing that grew or was created in Flanders fields rather than killed is very symbolic. I agree the reason is fading into history as a number of posters have pointed out. Its just my view of course.

    I just see the white poppy as more a political statement along the lines of the 1960's peace circle. I suppose the same could be said of the red poppy of course dependent on a persons view as you mentioned. Having visited a number of the battlefields and stood in battlefield cemeteries across the world on quiet reflection I would prefer to hope not.

    They have a point. Recent wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya have not exactly made those places peaceful and better places to live. A bit more creativity is needed if we are to have peace than a simplistic response with air strikes.

    I am not an absolute pacifist, but the people I know who are are very sincere and active at peacemaking. It takes more than standing aside saying "not in my name" to resolve conflicts. That response without a more positive action is just narcissism.

    I don't currently have any bets on the LibDems- but I might be tempted to back Alexander over Salmond, if only because it might galvanise anti-SNP tactical voting, and there is exactly one beneficiary of that...

    And it is clear that the incomprehension is mutual. While some wear no poppy because of thoughtlessness, there are a number of people who wear no poppy deliberatly.

    I shall be wearing mine tommorow in remembrance for my great grandfather and two great great uncles that number amongst the other 880 000.

    Even if Alexander did unite an anti-Salmond vote behind him, I would've still thought it wouldn't be enough. I mean, the SNP will surely increase nationally by about 15% atleast, and the signs are that if anything they're trending up even more in the Highlands -- Alexander might have to INCREASE on his 2010 vote to hold on.

    Didn't Inverness vote 58:42 for the Union? If you assume Salmond gets 80% of the 'Yes' vote, that puts him in the mid 30s. If Tories vote tactically for Alexander, he'll probably make it - otherwise Salmond will grab it.

    From Danny's PoV, what's nice about Salmond standing is that he stands a chance of grabbing the "not SNP" vote.

    And I firmly believe many parts of Scotland will be voting anti-SNP in the future, in the same way they used to vote anti-Conservative.

    Salmond should have chosen somewhere which voted YES on Sept 18. He move here shows his political naivety. This is the guy, remember, who told the world that the SNP would take Glasgow in 2012. As it turn out LAB returned to power with an overall majority. He's a has-been and a failure.

    I am actually wearing one at the moment to keep my chest warm.

    I think that Derryman's shirt would go down well at church tomorrow. I see enough GAA shirts there every week.

    I do have quite a range of Italian shirts, but as I'm poorly it's too cold to wear any.

    The wisdom index as explained by ICM themselves is a little on the crap side of polling.
    What people expect and what people vote are 2 different things.

    I see little evidence Ed spends more time on policy than worrying about the media. On the contrary, his team seem to spend more time worrying about it because he has media problems.

    Honestly, I think the attacks on Ed M are overblown, but what we are getting is an attempt to suggest that because he does poorly in the media, that it follows that he must be good at things the media is not interested in, like policy (he has had some interesting announcements, but again, no evidence of anything special generally)

    It is similar to the overdone efforts of Brown's spinners when they hammered the point, far too hard, that their guy had substance, which was more important than style. While true that it is more important, what the spinners were trying then, and are trying now, is to suggest that you cannot have both, and that therefore if Cameron or anyone else displays more style, or has more support in the media (not that Cameron has it all his own way), that they must lack substance or good policy.

    It's lazy stuff and quite untrue, but I think it can have some effect, if not enough on its own.

    Given Ed's status as a Brown ally for so long, I guess it should not be a surprise his people would use the same tactic.

    Edit: I should add the hardly startling revelation that the proof such a tactic is bollocks is that I very much doubt Labour were trying to implicitly suggest such a dichotomy when Blair was in charge, who even though I found him oily and smarmy, is generally conceded to have been good on style as well.

    But, as already mentioned, my family comes from the Mezzogiorno, far to the South.
