My own view is that Truss punters are overstating her prospects because the challenge facing her is so much greater than Starmer. For the latter could be the post-election PM even if LAB has fewer votes and MPs than the Tories.

Thar's what our smiling, rosy-cheeked children will sing, on this:

    the Feast of Leave.

And Brexit Day shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered, with our cheers
We few, we happy few, we band of Brexiteers

In about 5 years barely anyone will admit to voting Remain. In ten years Remainers will be actively hunted for sport, and the last of them will have to hide in "Remoaner Holes", tiny little alcoves in big old houses in Richmond and Cambridge, as the hardcore Leavers smoke them out with dogs and guns and super laser drones which look like weird grey wasps, or maybe hornets

That's a mere 3% of the population. And that hardly shows a devout devotion anyways.

Farage as a modern-day Cromwell? That's not going to please TSE.

Perhaps a statue of Nigel, perched on the White Cliffs of Dover, binoculars raised, peering into the Channel seeking to sight boatloads of asylum seekers/young, fit economic migrants, would be a fitting tribute?

Though I suppose that could incite a load of leftie remainers to arrive and tip said statue into said Channel. Shame.

I would expect Truss to get a bounce as Johnson, May, Brown and Major did when they took over as PM midterm.

However yes she will have a very difficult time to avoid defeat, her new Thatcherite economics combined with closeness to Boris and hard Brexit is not the best way to win either the redwall or the remaining Remain seats in the bluewall

There are 16,000 C of E churches in England (presumably a few more in Sco, NI and Wales)

Plus 42 cathedrals (which will get big crowds for Evensongs and the like)

    2 million divided by 16,000 = 125

That means each church needs to get just 125 visitors spread over four Sundays, and some other services

Some will get much less than that, if any, but some churches will get way more than that - and add in the big numbers for the cathedrals - and then it sounds quite feasible

Given the Tories are currently polling about 30-34%, lose that 3% and they fall under 30% and face 1997 style wipeout.

Indeed the last time a majority of Anglicans in the UK did not vote Tory was 1997

If Liz Truss is the answer, what is the question, exactly?

What is Liz going to do (or not do) that Boris wasn't doing (or was doing) that will turn Conservative fortunes around?

Because, apart from the trivial (not keeping sex pests in the Whips' Office) and the downright dangerous (assuming government can spend like a sailor without consequences), it's not obvious.

I think Starmer may basically end up having the same problem as Sunak, just with a slightly slower burn.

I don't really believe he's heart-on-sleeve patriotic and loves the monarchy no matter how many flags he puts up around him.

It's pretty obvious he's got conventional north London left-wing views at heart - probably similar to @kinabalu - and would go full Woke, flip to a republic and re-join the EU - with the euro on top - if he could.

People will sniff that insincerity out.

I was merely pointing out that it is plausible

Piquantly, it's probably about the same number as attended church in Britain in, say, 1500. It's just that the UK has grown a bit since then

When did you last go to church? Our village church 3 years ago closed for lack of attendance. Our previous village pop. circa 1,000 had a regular attendance of about a dozen, including the vicar, readers and churchwardens.

You don't have a scintilla of evidence for that - just a cheap smear and clearly a card the desperate Tories will be playing as the election approaches.

Patriotism comes in many forms - surrounding yourself with flags is just one.

2 million is enough to turn Tory defeat into landslide defeat, given Church of England regular churchgoers are traditionally part of the Tory core vote.

There are also 85 million Anglicans worldwide still

Many village churches do not have services every week. I suspect this figure comes from surveys and its people who go at Christmas putting down once a month. But hey, even if true, it’s a tiny proportion of the population, yet we have bishops in the House of Lords. Get rid.

Excellent. I'm actually humming it now

Liz Truss should start commissioning actual hymns for Brexit Day, and poems and ditties and the like - as we turn it into a proper national holiday. People WANT to rejoice about Brexit, it's just silly red tape holding them back, so give everyone the day off so everyone can express their gratitude to the Brexiteers

    Fewer and fewer...
Lol. You'd have been cheering on the French declaration of war on Prussia in 1870; Brexit will come to be seen as a similar act of self-harm.
Mark my words. 5 years. And you'll be pretending you voted Leave
In 5 years you'll be someone else, pretending you never posted this nonsense. ;-)

    Confusing isn't it?
Apparently she isn't going to put up taxes which haven't gone up yet anyways. So, no change there.
Apart from which, she seems to be carrying on exactly the same with a bit extra red meat thrown to the base, who are still voting Tory anyway (they are the base after all).
Other than that, well, she isn't Boris. But there's not a great deal of evidence that's a net electoral benefit.

Almost as if it isn't down to Brexit at all but the French playing silly buggers. Which ISTR they were not disinclined to do when we were members.

I voted Leave because I thought the EU was an institution on the verge of trouble. Nothing I've seen since - response to covid, to Ukraine, to the impending Euro crisis - causes me to change my mind. The risks of Brexit are nothing like as big as the risks of Bremain.

When the EU finally collapses, a special delegation will arrive from France with gifts and libations. In a spectacle unseen since the Field of the Cloth of Gold, and in a public ceremony pre-planned by Jean-Luc Godard after his conversion to Atlanticism, a chastened and humbled older Emmanuel Macron will present a newly retired Boris Johnson and his new young wife with the Bayeux Tapestry itself. Here will be a token of thanks and humility to Britain , for showing the way, and refusing to let French chauvinism cloud its long-term judgement.

That's a mere 3% of the population. And that hardly shows a devout devotion anyways.

Sounds like self reporting distortion, a bit like long Covid. Sounds far too high.
    Not really

There are 16,000 C of E churches in England (presumably a few more in Sco, NI and Wales)

Plus 42 cathedrals (which will get big crowds for Evensongs and the like)

    2 million divided by 16,000 = 125

That means each church needs to get just 125 visitors spread over four Sundays, and some other services

Some will get much less than that, if any, but some churches will get way more than that - and add in the big numbers for the cathedrals - and then it sounds quite feasible
I remember when I was a scout, around three decades ago, we had a colour parade once a month to the south London church whose hall we used each week. Even then, in the 90s, the congregation was barely a couple of dozen old people, who were glad to have their numbers swelled by a bunch of polite, but mostly bemused scouts, who were on the whole very patient about waiting for the biscuits afterwards.

I guess we also enjoyed marching with the flags on the way there.

When did you last go to church? Our village church 3 years ago closed for lack of attendance. Our previous village pop. circa 1,000 had a regular attendance of about a dozen, including the vicar, readers and churchwardens.
When did you last go to a big happy clappy more-evangelical CofE church in London with hundreds of congregants?

Many village churches do not have services every week. I suspect this figure comes from surveys and its people who go at Christmas putting down once a month. But hey, even if true, it’s a tiny proportion of the population, yet we have bishops in the House of Lords. Get rid.
There are 820 members of the House of Lords of which 26 are Church of England Bishops ie exactly 3% and exactly in proportion to practicing Anglicans percentage of the population

Still isn't very many though is it at all?
I was merely pointing out that it is plausible

Piquantly, it's probably about the same number as attended church in Britain in, say, 1500. It's just that the UK has grown a bit since then

My surprise was that the figure was so tiny, not that it was implausibly large.

There's another skilled speaker. I can't stand the expression of pleasure about Brexit or admiration for those who brought the disaster about, but Farage's first speech to the EU parliament after the referendum was masterful. ("You're not laughing now.")

I warmed to him a bit when he called for a referendum on net zero, but I can't see the crown prince [*] supporting his ennoblement if he keeps it up.

    * @Doug - Only a forriner would say "crown prince", right? Either that, or someone with horizons that stretch outside the village.

Edit: who are the people who've shifted from Leave to Remain, demographically? Which parties do they vote for mostly and where do they tend to live? They don't seem to be represented much by politicians.

Yes and many of those village churches are some of the most beautiful buildings in the country, often with Ministers performing services over multiple Parishes with each Parish church getting about 1 service a month.

As Leon also states evangelical churches in big cities get 100s joining each week and cathedrals too get a large congregation each Sunday

What those figures amount to is that it is still odds on that the Tories form the next government. I don't agree. I think the balance is just the other way and it is narrowly odds on that the next government is Labour led.

But the opinion that after all that has occurred the Tories are favourites is fascinating and startling.

I'd like to break it gently to the PB Tories now daring to believe that Queenie can somehow save the party from a complete trouncing at the next GE:

    1. The economy is f*cked.

    2. The population is going to face financial hardship the like of which none of us will have experienced.

    3. The CoL crisis is going to blamed fairly and squarely on this government.

Nothing the Tories can do will fix it in the next 2-3 years.

Neither Thatcher nor Churchill would stand a chance of overcoming that enormous electoral hurdle. Truss certainly won't. Even a Labour led by Corbyn would win in those circumstances.

The Tories are doomed. And rightly so.

Sorry to ruin your evening, but there it is.

Or put him in but only with the support of the more conventional and traditional Ed Davey

The question is whether we get Queen Mary I next or a long Queen Elizabeth I reign who effectively settles it for good.
Good Queen Bess settled the issue for good with a relatively moderate settlement that frustrated evangelicals who wanted to go further.

The evangelicals would have had their way if Mary had not usurped Queen Jane. I think that's the branch we're heading down.

Is that how is works, we get to have a representative percentage? I assume around 51% are female then. No?
In terms of the established church yes. Ex politicians and lawyers are far more overrepresented in the Lords than the Church of England is

Quite striking lack of reporters at Dover to cover the easy flow of trade and holiday makers.

Sorry, I don't even understand this. News, by definition, is when something unusual happens - queues of lorries and cars at Dover are unusual so it gets coverage.

No queues is normal - would you prefer reporters at train stations every day services run without a problem - perhaps Sky can send a reporter to my road who can claim, in hushed tones, "Newham Council today collected the rubbish from Stodge Towers just as happens every week."

On the other hand, you could be making some pointless snide little insinuation that the news only covers reports which could be construed as being negative about us leaving the EU.

If that's the case, go back and play with your toys - the grown ups are talking.

Yes, you've really got him sussed, haven't you - brilliant. A Labour leader from north London has conventional north London left-wing views - well I never.

Think you're wrong on the detail anyway. I reckon he does love his country. As for the monarchy, like many of us he probably thinks it's pretty anachronistic but also pretty harmless currently, and there are bigger fish to fry. Europe - he'll play that by ear. And as for going 'full Woke' - I haven't got a clue what that even means.

I was making the point that perhaps last week wasn’t actually because Brexit. No need to be patronising. Of course I get that news reports news, but sometimes a bit of balance is lacking. Debate raged on here for days over whether Brexit was the issue, or something else. Pretty strong evidence for the latter I’d say.

People do say Liz Truss has adopted Thatcherite economics but there is precious little evidence to support this claim, which could more easily be made about her opponent.

  • If Liz Truss is the answer, what is the question, exactly?

What is Liz going to do (or not do) that Boris wasn't doing (or was doing) that will turn Conservative fortunes around?

Because, apart from the trivial (not keeping sex pests in the Whips' Office) and the downright dangerous (assuming government can spend like a sailor without consequences), it's not obvious.

The "trivial" was deemed pretty serious a few weeks ago.

If the same policies are done, but minus Boris's personal flaws like his propensity to lie more than the average politician does, then would that not be a significant change in its own right?

I have to take a yawning teenage daughter on a one or two day trip out of London

She's 16, bright, but easily bored, quite likes history

Fishbourne palace then Portchester castle. Then victory and the Mary Rose the next day. All easy down the A3 from London.
    Ooh, not bad, ta

I've never been to Fishbourne Palace, not even heard of it
It is the largest excavated Roman residence north of the Alps

Brighton of course. The Royal Pavilion and the adjacent museum for the history. Then the seedy underbelly and all the woke deviancy to stave off the boredom. And the beach, and the pier.....

The "trivial" was deemed pretty serious a few weeks ago.

If the same policies are done, but minus Boris's personal flaws like his propensity to lie more than the average politician does, then would that not be a significant change in its own right?
It may be. But would it be more successful?

Agree with @Casino_Royale in the last thread. Love him or hate him Nigel Farage should clearly be honoured for the contribution he's made to public life.

    More drunken BS.

Brits don’t give a xxxx for abstract concepts like (purported) sovereignty if they come with the cost of having to queue for five hours to go on holiday.
One day, my friend, you too will give thanks for Brexit. And you will whisper the name "Farage" almost like a long lost, much loved girlfriend

And you will come on this site and ask my forgiveness, and apologise for being so wrong. I shall try to be magnanimous, because I know you are lonely and only talk to your dog
I think you should not mix PCP, MDMA and booze. It just breaks your brain.

Back on Planet Earth I think Truss will have the shortest of short honeymoons and then be taken apart as one crisis bangs into another and her incompetence outstrips the ability of the Tory bullshit machine to gloss over her faults.
This is true. We all (well, except Barty) thought she was crap and mad before, based on y'know, the evidence. She hasn't suddenly become sane and competent.

It will all end in tears.
Or I was right and you were 'all' wrong.

Just as I was when I was a relatively lone voice at the time on this site from the leave side calling for Theresa May's deal to be rejected, which ended in triumph.
  • Can anyone post the Times article on the flaunt it thing, sounds interesting

    No queues at Dover today.

So you're the archetypal rat leaving the supposed sinking ship?

I think it's more like the rats escaping on to the sinking ship.
