The technique of releasing canvassing data as if it was a proper poll in order to put the squeeze on Labour voters was first used by the Lib Dems in the Richmond Park by-election in 2016.

EXC: Lord Geidt believes allegations that Boris Johnson tried to appoint his future wife to a plum government job "could be ripe for investigation", Telegraph can reveal.

    LOL

It comes as the Foreign Affairs Committee plans to question Liz Truss about the alleged incident next week.

MPs are discussing questions for the Foreign Secretary ahead of a committee appearance.

By the way, I'm sure this has been picked up but re. the last thread, this might not even rank in the Top 10 by-election swings? The LibDems need, by my reckoning, a 22% swing and I think they will have a swing of 30%+

It's going to be big but here are the list of record swings:

HYUFD we've had this conversation already, it's not just Tube drivers striking, it's people getting paid £20K a year cleaning up sick.

I am not sympathetic to Tube drivers (albeit they are I would argue paid what people should be paid, it's others that are paid too little).

Do you honestly believe these are Labour's strikes? How did Labour cause them, in Government 13 years ago?

When we had the train drivers striking in Scotland, it was wall to wall "Nicola's" fault from the Tories on here (counting BigG as one). Dispute now settled, at a fairly reasonable price in the circs.

Not been here much lately so I might be stating what many have posted already but surely T&H is a straight referendum on Johnson.

Labour's lead in the National polls is a modest 6% or so and if that were reflected in the by-election the Tories would hold comfortably. If they lose it can only be a verdict on the Leader.

    No?

    Your own link says:

"The trouble with using the figure for train drivers in a debate about the strikes is that the drivers are represented by their own union, Aslef, which says that 96% of train drivers in England, Scotland and Wales are its members, and most of the remaining 4% are not union members at all.

Aslef will not be taking part in the national strike, although they have action of their own taking place at the same time, with drivers at Greater Anglia striking on 23 June. A strike on Hull Trains on 26 June has been cancelled. Aslef are also balloting for action on several other lines."

    1. Train and tube drivers are not on strike. You know this. Yet you lie anyway.#
    2. Similarly, the "Labour's strike" line. RMT are not affiliated to Labour. Their leader is not a member of Labour. Yet the *Tories* have forced this strike into effect by refusing to let Network Rail negotiate.

    Its the Shapps strike.

Those who earn less than the £59k a year train and tube drivers do who are trying to get to work today but can't due to their strikes I am sure do

HYUFD is lying. He strikes me as an intelligent man. So he knows the truth. So is deliberately choosing to lie about it. That's it.

There is zero evidence because it isn't yet seen as a prospect and none of the alternatives is remotely as well known as Boris, and nor is is known what they stand for. Though of course nobody really knows what Boris stands for since he is a liar and a fantasist and what pass for his thoughts change with the weather.

Train drivers aren't striking - it's station and signal staff...

But given I pointed this out 5 times yesterday I'm going to take your continual argument that black is white is intentional....
TBF, I’m not sure many get the distinction. I hadn’t realised it was only signals / station staff striking today and I’m guessing I pay more attention to the news than most people
HYUFD is not most folk, though.
And this has been pointed out here pretty well every day in the last week. Every time we've had a discussion about the strike.

Tory ministers also using the 59k line on the radio yesterday. Do they not know, either ?

Many have been fooled into hating @RMTunion and railway-workers. Because they are organised, well led, determined, strong. One day all workers will be together like the railway-workers. And every union will be like the #RMT. And then the economy will belong to those who make it.

From a professional viewpoint, I've seen worse and have probably had worse days myself. She turns the questions into comfortable territory (pledges - i.e. Brexit - and vaccinations). More of this needs to happen. Sneering lickspittle minister sent onto multiple TV news shows to lie about the situation. Union boss just calls him a liar to his face and sets out why he is a liar. Minister doesn't have a response other than plough on.
Politics & politicians have always had an awkward relationship with the truth, but the outright lie now seems to be a thing, eg Nads saying 96% of those consulted favoured C4 privatisation when it was the opposite, Truss? Saying that NI was suffering economically compared to the rest of the UK when it’s the opposite, BJ on countless occasions. This is not a propitious development.

Your narrative may be pure fantasy. It is nonetheless the fantasy that voters are believing as reality. You, Shapps and the Daily Mail have played the notion that £60,000 a year ASLEF train drivers are on strike very well.

It is a lie, but in post-truth politics it works.

    Howay the railway workers

Railway workers earn far more than their productivity contribution or skill set rarity because of sustained industrial action over decades. Six figures for many of them, for quite a sociable number of weekly hours and generous benefits.

They are now demanding pay rises way above and beyond what the rest of us have any right to expect from our own employers, and protection from redundancy no matter the changed economics of their industry.

If they’re successful it won’t be “The Man” or the Tories that will be coughing up for it but every other working person in this country.

Once upon a time we had a party with the core mission of standing up for the rights of workers against holders of capital. Where the f*** are they? Were Starmer a smarter politician, a more moral human being and a true defender of workers, he’d be proclaiming these strikers a national disgrace and leading lines of workers to break the pickets.

Funny how "inclusion" only works one way.....

THE words ‘women’ and ‘girls’ have been erased from a Scottish Government-backed advice leaflet teaching youngsters about periods.

The taxpayer-funded Young Scot information instead calls women "those of us that have both our ovaries and a womb" and "half the world’s population".

But information for males about puberty and their voice breaking refers to them as ‘men’ and boys’.

Yep, a lot of websites down this morning. Cloudflare is one of those companies most people don’t know about unless they see an error message, but they hold the modern internet together.
As someone pointed out elsewhere - there are a whole set of internet protocols designed to keep things going. However, Cloudflare does things that are otherwise very difficult and complex (denial of service attack prevention being 1) that large parts of the internet happily use Cloudflare and so introduce a single point of failure.

For reference we picked up that Cloudflare was down earlier but were able to mitigate by changing our DNS to point at the servers directly. Now I need to work out how what the solution would be if we can't get at cloudflare's admin serve to change the DNS there (still a single point of failure but a smaller one to most companies).

I remain stunned, as I was yesterday morning, that there was no proposal on the table by the management the day before a national strike that was going to cause serious economic damage to the nation. That struck me as a serious failure of duty. If that was brought about by government interference then Ministers deserve all the shellacking they are getting.

Arguing about who did what and walked out of where yesterday is completely beside the point. The current legislation requires quite a complicated and time consuming process to be gone through by the union before the strike can be legally called. What has been happening in the last few weeks to reach a deal here? The answer seems to be nothing.

Faced with no offer and 9% inflation a strike was inevitable. Labour MPs are right to support a workforce that is being treated so shabbily. But this is just the start. We are going to see this in almost every part of the public sector over the next few months as the government struggles with no money and staff struggle with the CoL crisis.

The government seems unable to say that as a result of corona, and the actions taken to deal with it, we are all materially worse off. Who should be worst affected is partly a matter of political opinion and partly a function of the laws of economics.
