To be fair I am content with our GP practice since we e mail them wherever we have a problem and they respond quickly and usually a GP will phone for a chat. Everyone has to be triaged and nobody can call direct to the surgery

However it is correct that in the last half an hour BBC has reported Wales NHS worst performances with unsustainable pressure

No, but it is revealing. Ollie Robinson was pilloried for similar. Don't forget Rafiq's relationship with Ballance too.

Final point on why we're all fucked by the Treasury's addiction to outdated models - they are unable to deal with the concept of making something where nothing previously existed. It's why we're in the slow lane for investment outside of a few specialist areas funded by the MoD budget (which the treasury has repeatedly tried to cut). If something is zero in a model it can't ever really amount to much more than that. We've failed to invest in the "zero" value places and "zero" value trade relationships because the treasury has deemed them unworthy by the models. It's a completely farcical way to run a country.

Today they have reasserted the dominance of this failed predictive model in the UK, we're all going to have to get used to it because Labour or Tory, the same wankers in the treasury pushing the same broken models will exist and the nation will be starved of any kind of investment beyond maintenance of what already exists and a few token bits here and there.

Fibre optic is the classic example of this, 20 years ago countries in Eastern Europe, Asia and elsewhere were investing billions into fibre optic cabling despite the value of the internet and ecommerce being fairly low compared to where it is now. We had that opportunity but the same arseholes in the treasury blocked it because the multiplier on increasing the value of the internet was poor at the time. The bean counters can't see beyond their spreadsheets and the rubbish outputs they get from them. We're going to keep missing opportunities until someone goes in and sacks them all.

Electric vehicles another case in point.
S Korea, a smaller economy, will have perhaps a quarter of the world market for battery manufacturing.
One of their leading companies was an oil refiner until recently.
I keep banging on about renewables but it is an area where we should be leading the world. We can and should be developing and building our own wind turbines and battery storage facilities for use here and export. Be developing and building our own Hydrogen from seawater processing plants for use here and export. Using the expertise and natural resources we have to make ourselves relevant and self-sufficient.

But we aren't. Because investment is communism, and takes longer than the next election. So actually still being ahead in the polls is actually Better for Britain than a viable long-term future actually.
Hydrogen from water is a fools errand. Thermodynamic efficiency of electrolysis is appealing... So, unless you can do something interesting with catalysts.....

In most cases, I'd agree. However, where the source of renewable electricity is cheap and plentiful, yet the sink is far away, it may make sense. Like the JCB deal for green hydrogen from Australia.

In Oz, you could build massive solar and wind power plants, far in excess of national consumption. Hydrogen - despite its transportation difficulties - is an interesting way of exporting that power thousands of miles to customers.
Long distance HVDC interconnect a better one.
Morocco/UK is nothing; Chile is proposing a trans Pacific cable to Asia.

    That's with current technology.
Economic large scale electrolysis needs further technical development, though it's getting closer.
The numbers suggest some strange alternatives - at the current rate of fall in the cost of batteries we might not be far off the idea of electricity tankers. Vehicles (maybe even ships) whose job it is transport power.
Like the old sneakernet for data transfer. ;)

No, its about what people did a few weeks ago.

It was the YCCC refusing to take action against anyone today and calling it 'banter' rather than having serious apologies etc that led to this blowing up.
Sorry about that. As mentioned above, I was focusing too much on the Vaughn aspect and not the wider story.
The Vaughan aspect is different because Vaughan responded to it by basically saying everyone involved is lying rather than apologising.

In contrast Bumble instantly apologised when he was named.

An apology can go a long way. I think we're more likely to see Bumble on air again than Vaughan as a result.

"We're doubling capacity between Manchester and Leeds". That is a patent lie. As there is no new line between Leeds and Manchester what they are building spews its high speed trains onto the existing network. As I keep pointing out, when you try and run faster trains on the existing network you reduce capacity.

They are currently already committed to (and have started) an upgrade between Huddersfield and Dewsbury. That plus continuing the wires on the existing line will be it until 2042 when the new high speed line across the Pennines opens. Not a doubling of capacity.

"We're tripling capacity between Liverpool and Manchester". With a line that utilises the existing run out of Lime Street to Liverpool South Parkway. So thats bollox as well.

"There are going to be people who want everything at once". Thats OK. Because instead of giving people HS2 in full and NPR by 2043, instead we are Speeding Up by offering much less by 2043.

    Wazzock.
"when you try and run faster trains on the existing network you reduce capacity."

Sure as day follows night, the end result will be that high speed trains do not run at the speeds that Shapp is blustering about to delivery this faster city to city times. The timetable will mean they have to run slower on the non-dedicated lines or capacity will suffer.

It is a shit sandwich with no bread.

Just heard Heidi Allen on R4. Apparently at one election a ballot paper had an erect penis against her name and a flaccid penis against her LD opponents name. It was counted as a vote for her.

Now I have been at quite a few counts, sometimes as an agent, and there is no way a returning officer would do that. I am guessing the 3 of them were having a bit of fun considering the 1 vote didn't change anything.

I have been at many counts and penises are usually accepted. With no dissent from any party. Absolutely returning officers accept that sort of thing.

Guidance on what to accept is quite liberal, so listing 1 and 2 would often accept the vote for 1, when I'd think it unclear as they could be rating not ranking them. If erect penis is a tick and a flaccid one a cross itd pass muster with many returning officers as being clear in intent (the tick cross thing is accepted as people sometime mark the wrong box but make clear which one they intend, so it's not rejected as voting for more than you can - people often tick one and cross all the others).

I'd say that's not certain so dont accept but where it doesnt matter you are right people tend to let it through, so I'm sure the story is true
    Thanks for that.

Glad to hear that an erect penis is a tick and a flaccid one a cross and so the former passes muster. It counts. Makes sense.

But what if the only mark on the ballot paper is of a flaccid penis? I assume this wouldn't count and, if so, this leads to the obvious follow-up of what level of erectness would pass muster - i.e. what about a 'semi'?

What constitutes an erect penis? (My wife and I have this conversation all the while.)

There are problems, AIUI, with second homers coming into Wales at weekends.

Absolutely. He has done a valuable thing in exposing racism in cricket. However, it does open a question as to whether he was as much a part of the toxic culture as people he complains about.
It provides evidence for the assertion once often made by @SeanT, late of this parish, that racism is a natural and inevitable part of the human condition, against which struggle is vain and futile.

I'd prefer to think that wasn't true.
The first part can be true without the second. Just because something bad is also very prevalent and comes naturally to many (or even most) people doesn't mean it isn't worth fighting against. Indeed it can be in you and it's still worth fighting against by you. Arguably especially so. This doesn't necessarily indicate hypocrisy. It might do, it depends, but not necessarily. You don't have to be entirely free of a vice or a weakness to speak out with authenticity against it. The belief that you do is false and is often used as a way of discrediting or deflecting from uncomfortable truths. We see this in the climate change debate a lot for example.

In such a culture it is easy to be both sinner and sinned against. In fact it can be hard not to be.

    I haven't lived in England since 1960

To be fair I am content with our GP practice since we e mail them wherever we have a problem and they respond quickly and usually a GP will phone for a chat. Everyone has to be triaged and nobody can call direct to the surgery

However it is correct that in the last half an hour BBC has reported Wales NHS worst performances with unsustainable pressure
I suspect NHS figures have gone to hell in a hand cart across the UK. I am not defending the NHS in Wales, the service has been patchy since devolution. I have a dog in this race, my mother died at the Princess of Wales Hospital from negligence mid- scandal. Much as I might like to I can't pin that on Drakeford.
I am sorry to hear that but it is fair to say that today's news hardly comes as a surprise and it is not Boris who is responsible
I don't believe anyone would suggest it is Johnson's responsibilty in Wales. Drakeford is the incumbent so he takes any flak.

I think it would be churlish mid- pandemic to attribute responsibility for poor figures in England to Johnson either, other than applying the rules of incumbency.

Rafiq posting a couple of stupid things as a teenager does not excuse the institutional racism of YCCC done by adults against the same teenager and later as a man.

Yes racism is significantly driven by how humans are wired. Humans are not wired optimally and we can train ourselves to act against our initial and natural instincts.

Had a bit of a game at the walk-in vaccination centre today.

I took my 16 year old for her second vaccination and they sat her down, took her details, and on discovering her age said she wasn't eligible.

The nurse pulled her supervisor over (he was wearing NHS clothing) and he started spouting the rules that second jabs only allowed for vulnerable 16/17 year olds unless within three months of 18th bday. I pointed out that he was quoting the old rules which changed on Monday and that the new rules were affective immediately.

He hadn't a clue what I was talking about - Googled a bit and obviously found something and said "well we haven't been informed - come back after next Tuesday (??) our indemnity won't' cover etc etc ...".

So my daughter, who I had taken out of school to attend, rolled her sleeve back up and they cracked on with my booster jab instead.

On standing up to leave the supervisor motioned for us to sit down while he made a call and then back-tracked and gave her the jab.

Amazing that I knew more about vaccine eligibility than the staff in the vaccination centre.

I seem to be getting more and more useful, up-to-date information these days about all sorts of topics from a website I frequent called... PB.com!

Picked up plenty of good hints and tips from here, including the free flu jabs at Boots and the earliest I could book the Covid booster (today, done, yay!).

On that last point Mrs. P and I had Pfizer this time following 2 x AZ in the spring. I was surprised that others attending were also getting Pfizer even though some of them had already had 2 x Pfizer. I thought a mix and match was specified?

Well it looks like at least part of Austria is going back into a full lockdown, "just for a few weeks to flatten the curve". Much as I despise our government, at least we're not being subjected to this. Personally very annoying too because I'm booked into a martial arts camp near Salzburg in January.

    https://www.thelocal.at/20211118/salzburg-and-upper-austria-to-go-into-full-covid-lockdown-next-week/

That's them under house arrest until next Easter then.

As we know from last Winter's experience, once politicians embark on the path of lockdowns they really struggle to let them go. The nanosecond they do, the cases inevitably start going straight back up and the medics and scientists collectively scream that all the problems the lockdown was meant to solve will be upon us again in about five minutes flat. Only worse. The only relief seems to be warm weather, and that ain't returning to the Alps anytime soon.

As you say, our Government is pretty rotten but at least it has managed, so far, to resist the impulse to imprison the entire population of the country every Winter for the rest of time because the hospitals are busy - which is where, if the vaccine effect isn't considered sufficient, countries like Austria are headed. If they're going to start using lockdowns as a solution to suppressing annual Winter illnesses then how do they ever get out of that cycle?

Sure, but isn't this whole story about what people did years ago?

There is a serious point there - I've considered voting YP in the past, but when I looked into the local council candidates a few years back they seemed to include "fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists". Things may have changed. The YP will need to get their act together if they want to become a serious force.

It'll be interesting to see how it works out for David.
My dad voted for them at GE19.
I don't wish to impugn his character

Parl candidate presumably better checked - I can understand oddities getting candidature for council positions (happens for the main parties too, as we've seen!)
I wasn't happy to hear he voted for them and I think he knew that because he didn't tell me. Only found out via my brother. My image of the YP is similar to YCCC. Bluff, reactionary insular exceptionalism. Maybe that's wrong if the likes of Herdson are joining.

It's interesting and yes there is absolutely a difference between institutionalised racism and casual racism. Both bad but both to be handled differently.

As far as I have observed he has never called for a witch hunt just for people to acknowledge what they have done and take steps to address it.

His apology is an example of this. It is super unfortunate but perhaps proves his point as to the all-pervasive nature of discrimination.

England's figures (I assume you're talking about patients waiting in A&E?) are also terrible. Scotland reached a new low recently too. Whatever is going on is wider than devolved decisions.
The NHS has been providing care on a budget for decades, because nobody wants to face up to the gargantuan financial burden that is needed to furnish the country with a proper Scandiwegian level of health and social care provision - especially in this day and age where, frankly, most of the population of the country is completely bloody knackered. The great majority of people are inactive, fat, old or some combination of the three.

No-one wants to pay for it, so the system is falling to pieces with a chronic lack of both staff and beds. Covid has merely delivered the coup de grace. That's all.

Bit of a twist in the tale..

    Say it isn't so
No, he has confirmed it is, and is ashamed of his behaviour. What more do you want him to do?
    A good apology too.

There's a difference between bad remarks made by people years ago that they apologise for when brought up - and doing racist stuff today and covering it up when people complain.
Sure, but isn't this whole story about what people did years ago?

I can't imagine Bumble will ever be on air again. I feel really sorry for him, he must feel very low at the moment.

If only he'd said it were Jews who never went up t'clubhouse bar. Rafa would never have even remembered it, let alone mentioned him in parliament!
I sincerely hope Bumble will be back on air when we have some more cricket.
And in my experience it would be a surprise if Jewish players or spectators never went to the bar, bought their round, or whatever.
I only say that because the comments of his picked up upon by Rafiq concerned Asian players not going to the clubhouse.

Bumble is 74 - he has done well stay in the Sky Comm box as long as he has. I worry this will be the end of him full stop, let alone his Sky gig. His reputation is shot. For such a popular man to be outed as a racist for what he said must be devastating, and without that light hearted, jovial way of his, he wouldn't be Bumble. The same thing worried me when my own Dad was wrongly accused of all manner of isms, and schemed and lied about by the Headmaster of the school he worked at - all credit to the Trade Unions for ripping the case to shreds. What would have become of my Dad had they not, I shudder to think.

I am content with today's announcement no matter how much sniping I receive
Anything to ensure money is spent on your usually triple-locked pension and NHS...
I am sure you are aware that the NHS here in Wales is the responsibility of Drakeford and Welsh Labour and it has been announced in the last half an hour of it's worst ever performance

The pension rise is 3.1% in 22 and not triple locked
Have you thought about moving to England to reacquaint yourself with a perfect service?

England's figures (I assume you're talking about patients waiting in A&E?) are also terrible. Scotland reached a new low recently too. Whatever is going on is wider than devolved decisions.

It's an interesting one politically too. For example, if we were put back into lockdown I would vote for pretty much any party short of outright fascists that promised no more lockdowns whatever happens. At the level of impact on my life that a lockdown has, it overrides pretty much every other political consideration.

Austria has a strong far-right party, which I understand is making hay out of opposing vaccine mandates etc. It will be interesting to see how they do out of this.

@rottenborough on your question as to why Johnson is doing this. I found the report of the National Infrastructure Commission published last year that might be informative. In it they recommend the prioritisation of the regional links over the HS2 leg.

The only thing that makes sense is the Treasury have out manoeuvred him.

The forum isn't trying to be representative of the nation. It's trying to get an edge on the betting markets by anticipating future changes in public opinion, and accurately divining the state of public opinion from imperfect opinion polls.

Equally we've seen better analysis here than you will get from any national paper and probably from a lot of consultancy firms.

We also know that a snap quick poll of a new topic may require a few days before people's minds are actually made up.

This pithy summary, however, is of absolute diamond-like value. So more of those please.
If hospitalisation is heading down then all is well.

I had same as you, a Pfizer on top of two AZNs.
We ..... well, my wife ..... was told that was the most desirable procedure. She's has AZN/AZN/Pfizer. I've had Pfizer x 3.
It seems very strange to me that some people get awful side effects whereas others don't. I never even had a sore arm after either of my two AZNs and so far so good with the Pfizer booster.
Same combo here. 2 x AZ followed by the Pfizer just today. Bit worried, since it smacks of mixing drinks, which I try not to do, but thus far all is fine and here I am typing this. Do hope I'm not tempting fate because that's something else I try not to do. Anyway, it's done now.
I don't think it's like mixing drinks because it's not a medicine, it's a vaccine triggering your immune system. So all that's left is the immune memory from the last one. I like the idea of mixing - hopefully fills in some of the gaps from different types of immune response (e.g. antibodies vs T-cells).

iirc the numbers are very small in difference when we are into the booster. 1 or 2% difference.
IIRC we were told 94% and 93%. Which isn't at all significant.

You absolutely should join him. You could end up running it!
I don't have the time, I'm getting another promotion at work and I'm thinking of proposing next year.
    But your county needs you.
What did you do in t' war, dad?
The most important job of all, son - payroll administration. Even brave heroes needed to get paid.
Which reminds me of the following - a few years back, a civil servant decided that since a few Ts hadn't been crossed or something, he was going to hold up all the extra payments to all of UK Special Forces. Quite a few people had their monthly pay cut in half etc....

I think that has to be bravest thing I've ever heard of.

They say this time, it's different
Do you say it's the same? Boris is a Maggie and SKS is a Foot/Kinnock? I don't think that is right. Boris is Humpty Dumpty.

Good evening. My apologies for going off topic, but having watched Witch Hunt on All 4 over the last few days I'd recommend it to anyone who likes their tv drama to be about financial and political corruption, with some sexual harassment and alleged racism thrown in for good measure. It's topical in a number of ways, and not at all predictable.

    COVID Summary

Cases are up - mostly among the very young. In England (at least) 10-14 and 05-09 are up sharply. While 15-19 is solidly with the rest of the vaccinated groups.....

There is a rise in the over 40 groups, though, but much smaller.

    Hospitalisations are still gong down.

    Deaths are still heading down.

I've not been on here much this year so haven't seen your epic charts before - do you ever comment on how hospitalisations and deaths correlate to earlier reported cases? As cases were starting to drop 2-4 weeks ago, you'd expect the other two data series to be dropping now, but the good news would be if they are dropping faster than cases, I guess.
