Husband of Allegra Stratton suggesting the Government might have found a solution to social care here:

"The best solution, however, may be to require the over-40s to buy compulsory social care insurance. The premiums could be deducted directly from their monthly salaries in the same way that student loan repayments are taken off young graduates’ wages."

LOL I think we said a year or two ago something like this would be introduced when we turn 40.

Tuition fees introduced when we become students. Now care insurance introduced when we turn 40.

No doubt when Millenials come around to retirement then it will be a case of abolishing pensions.
I have been working on the principle that this will be the case for when I get to be an oldie.

Variants most likely to crop up in places where the Plague is running riot, just as predicted.

We can forget any official figures the Russians dole out for Covid fatalities. The excess deaths tell the true story. The country's a charnel house.
Is the plague running riot in Siberia? Or is that just a name?

Dunno. We debated multiverses a couple of weeks ago on PB one evening, but i can't remember the answer.

It's been introduced for private pensions with no issues.

I think it's more politically acceptable than ever greater council tax rises or selling one's home - the question is the mechanism for the premium, and the amount.

Yet our government is planning to allow summer holidays to at least 30 countries.

Just how bloody incompetent is this government?
Its insanity...and of course they keep doing this showing a bit of leg over summer hols, then delaying decisions....they should have said months ago, sorry no foreign holidays this summer, end of.

Politically its also dumb, as if they do cancel them, people will be even more pissed off.
My sister and family had a week in Mallorca booked for July. Tui cancelled that themselves this week and gave her a refund.
Desperately hoping that they can justify opening air bridges with some of these destinations later in the Summer. Not much chance of that in most cases, and certainly not any of the big ones.

Malta and Israel don't have room for about fourteen million beached whales. A lot of folk who are simply desperate to get sunburnt are going to have to make do with Bournemouth this year.
Holiday central here already, and it’s only April. When the hotels and restaurants open it will be busier still.
What are the rules for fully vaccinated Brits visiting the UK from the US? Hoping to come see family in Cornwall this spring.
Hasn’t the US just banned travel to the UK?
I'll have to check. I was interested in the UK rules. From uk.gov, it seems the rules have not made any allowance yet for being fully vaccinated.

Somebody who is around 40 is going to be right pissed off, they will be the ones who have significant student loans and then this.
Not quite, at least not yet. The oldest people on the 3k pa fees would be around 35 right now, and no-one over 30 would have paid 9k pa.

I don't really think this is the way to solve intergenerational fairness. If anything, age-related taxes just makes everything worse. We need something a whole lot more subtle than this.

Boris Johnson wanted to go there to start the cementing of the desperately wanted (by him) trade deal.

    Quite clear.

On Pensions you can still opt out (but you can't be encouraged to opt out and attempts should be made to dissuade you). That isn't the same as what's being proposed here.

🚨 | BREAKING: Downing Street has accused Dominic Cummings of leaking the PM’s texts

    Meh. I don't see how that's news.

Cummings has been doing leaking since Day One.
    I don't see:

    1. Why this is news, given the article doesn't seem to have any actual hard evidence;
    2. Why this is news, given that even if it is true it doesn't really affect the public; or
    3. Why someone would brief this? Presuming it is No 10 saying this, it just makes Cummings look powerful even after he is kicked out and draws attention to in-fighting within the government. It's almost like Cummings should have leaked this story, except apparently he hasn't?

Also, how and why would Cummings have copies of Johnson's text messages from several months ago? Is that a thing that colleagues, even in a PM/Chief of Staff situation, tend to share in a verifiable, storable, format?

    I don't see:

    1. Why this is news, given the article doesn't seem to have any actual hard evidence;
    2. Why this is news, given that even if it is true it doesn't really affect the public; or

    .

Husband of Allegra Stratton suggesting the Government might have found a solution to social care here:

"The best solution, however, may be to require the over-40s to buy compulsory social care insurance. The premiums could be deducted directly from their monthly salaries in the same way that student loan repayments are taken off young graduates’ wages."

    https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-the-tories-can-solve-their-youth-problem-7lsx5zc53

I've been working on the principle that I will die on the job. A financial adviser agreed with me it was likely. Tough break for office work.

Seems a bit weak for a proper boom. As others have said everyone already seems to have known he leaked plenty of things, and probably a lot of recent stuff. Mild boom perhaps that the relationship has broken down to the point accusations are made openly, which might presage some retalitatory further leaks which will amuse, but presumably Dom will save the big stuff, not worth burning bridges completely.

If we are going to have a 'social care' levy then it should be applied to all incomes ie on the same basis as income tax so including pensions, investment income etc - say an extra 2%. This would be fairer to workers.

National insurance includes Pension contributions, pensions over 67s have already paid for. We need a new NI category for pensioners calculated to contribute to Care and Health, but not pensions or unemployment benefits. This does not seem unreasonable.

Funny, I would have thought that merging tax and NI and removing exemptions for age, self employment etc is making the tax system fairer. Why is it fair that someone can still work full time and yet pay no NI just because they are over 65 whilst someone a few years younger is doing the same job and earning the same money but paying a huge extra packet of tax to the exchequer because he is younger?

The Norwegian tax system - which I am sure most people would agree is the basis of a [pretty progressive society under your terms is massively simpler than the UKs and as such has far fewer loopholes which to my mind makes it fairer.

Ok - just call it an extra 2% on income tax then. I know we don't hypothecate taxes but it would provide extra money to deal with social care. And also we should tax inheritance properly too. Inheritances are unearned by the recipients.

The deal as outlined in the 1940s was never that you were paying for your own state pension. You were paying for the pensions of those already retired and hoping that when it was your turn to retire the system would still be in place for those paying NI at that point to pay for you.

NI on over 65s should have been introduced when compulsory retirement stopped being enforceable.
And that's the reason you stop paying. Your pension no longer increases, in fact it goes into payment (or can be deferred) and you stop qualifying for JSA and ESA

The reason why Fox / Reform / Reclaim aren't making any headway is because Johnson has stolen their clothes.

If, rather than being anti-woke, this administration pursued social-policy along the lines Cameron did then they'd be up to 10-12% in the polls.

Isn't the main reason because Farage was banking on anti-lockdown sentiment driving support from disaffected Conservatives, and most people support harsh lockdown measures and those that don't are fractured into a dozen squabbling factions? And that while lots of people dislike what might be called excessive or pushy wokery, that is not something you can build a mass movement around? (like how green issues is not enough, as any party can go green, so Greens also go red)
Interestingly, it's the Lib Dems who've been most able to capitalise on the anti-lockdown sentiment.
It is just about possible that Ed Davey actually knows the meaning of the word "liberal".

That would come as a nasty shock to their hordes (OK not "hordes", more like "both") of their remaining voters, who think they're supposed to be basically Labour-lite.
Short memories, have they? LibDems were in coalition with the Conservatives less than a decade ago.
