Some important breaking news for those betting on the Mayor of London – politicalbetting.com
FOX & TICE: Delighted to announce that ?@reformparty_uk? and ?@thereclaimparty? have formed pact: we are endorsing Laurence for Mayor and Laurence is endorsing our candidates for the London Assembly on May 6th pic.twitter.com/iChBXncw2i
Still don't understand why RefUK didn't run a candidate, but since they didn't this is a logical move. Might gain him a % or two. Still not going to save his deposit.
An old university contemporary of mine who was a Tory activist has defected to Reform UK and is standing for them for the London Assembly. He was out campaigning with Lawrence Fox today so this news is no surprise
Redfield & Wilton Strategies’ West Midlands Mayoral Election voting intention poll finds incumbent Conservative candidate Andy Street leading over Labour and Co-Operative candidate Liam Byrne by 9%. Altogether, our voting intention results are as follows:
For some reason when I saw the headline about important breaking news about the London mayoralty I assumed it was going to be about Brian Rose and urine.
I was surprised Fox didn't join Farage's Party in the first place.
Maybe just didn't want to share the limelight.
However both parties were chasing the same tiny number of cranks, so this doesn't change anything ultimately.
I must say I am in favour of crank parties being there to collect the crank vote (and, in fairness, the irrelevant parties, since not all of them are cranks) - what I object to is when, even after results, they act as though they still represent a mass movement.
I think it was Caroline Lucas banging on about the choice of the people or some such in 2015 that crystallised that for me. Whatever the flaws of our FPTP system you cannot just assume the democratic mantle of the mob if the mob is voting for the big two. At least Farage used to be able to claim a large amount of backing.
For some reason when I saw the headline about important breaking news about the London mayoralty I assumed it was going to be about Brian Rose and urine.
But there's some solid deadpan sass nevertheless.
I saw that earlier and nearly barfed.
I wasn't going to inflict that on PBers, I do have some decorum, believe it or not.
Have to admit I had assumed that with several of the mayoralties being pretty darn close last time that the Tories would not hold onto the ones they squeaked last time, but seemingly the news looks positive for them. And while it is amazing how little chance the Tories have in London considering they held it less than a decade ago, Khan's victory over Fox (and some novelty candidates like Corbyn and Bailey) can only fill up so much airtime.
Practically irrelevant small parties pool activists with aim of losing by slightly less. This is kind of like an anti-matter version of the Remain Alliance, but far more puny.

It's people who have some decorum who are the best at truly shocking people when they cut loose, rather than everyday hedonists and shockjocks.

This is why my friends hate me, I'm a very polite person, who seldom swears, and when I do swear it is a mild word like bollocks.
So when they introduce me to their parents/partners etc they always say what a polite well mannered person I am, and why can't their kids/partners be more like me.
Me, the guy who knows every entry on urban dictionary, can recite Cattulus 16, or tells a very rude joke often, or drops a blatant innuendo all the time.

Edit - yes, before anyone mentions it, I know Magellan was Portuguese, but his expedition was Spanish and run on Spanish lines.

Unless I'm missing something then it seems that you don't have a particularly strong stomach. Well, not as strong as Mr Rose's, anyway.
I was expecting a dungeon to be involved - minimum.
The reason why Fox / Reform / Reclaim aren't making any headway is because Johnson has stolen their clothes.
If, rather than being anti-woke, this administration pursued social-policy along the lines Cameron did then they'd be up to 10-12% in the polls.
Isn't the main reason because Farage was banking on anti-lockdown sentiment driving support from disaffected Conservatives, and most people support harsh lockdown measures and those that don't are fractured into a dozen squabbling factions? And that while lots of people dislike what might be called excessive or pushy wokery, that is not something you can build a mass movement around? (like how green issues is not enough, as any party can go green, so Greens also go red)

Above all, Europe was the primary driver for a separate populist right movement. Once (a) Brexit happened and (b) the Tories made up their mind to own it, the game was up.

It is just about possible that Ed Davey actually knows the meaning of the word "liberal".
That would come as a nasty shock to their hordes (OK not "hordes", more like "both") of their remaining voters, who think they're supposed to be basically Labour-lite.

It took him long enough. They still have a way to go, though.
They're still adopting unliberal positions on a number of issues, IMHO.

Nigeria is the country that still stands out. Even if we take it as given they aren't really testing, no reports of any sort of melt down of the health system.

I think London is finally breaking into the tech sector. Far from being left behind it does feel like London is about consolidate its position as the European financial hub.
Expect a lot of tears from bitter EU types over the next year as tech company after tech company opts for London. I know from an investor perspective it's a really exciting time looking ahead to fast growing tech companies listing here.

Yet our government is planning to allow summer holidays to at least 30 countries.
Just how bloody incompetent is this government?
Its insanity...and of course they keep doing this showing a bit of leg over summer hols, then delaying decisions....they should have said months ago, sorry no foreign holidays this summer, end of.
Politically its also dumb, as if they do cancel them, people will be even more pissed off.
Also on that, there's a fairly reasonable chance that SoftBank will opt to float ARM back on the LSE if it can't be sold to Nvidia. At its expected list value they'd be stupid not to.
I honestly think that by the end of next year we may end up with a really different looking FTSE100 with tech companies making up a much bigger proportion of it.

Although from the name you would be forgiven for thinking they give you cancer.

Desperately hoping that they can justify opening air bridges with some of these destinations later in the Summer. Not much chance of that in most cases, and certainly not any of the big ones.
Malta and Israel don't have room for about fourteen million beached whales. A lot of folk who are simply desperate to get sunburnt are going to have to make do with Bournemouth this year.

I am obviously joking...absolutely love Canada. Is easily the country I have spent the most amount of time in besides the UK. I normally visit pretty much every year.

Depends on location. There are lots of countries in the world where prevalence is very low. So a blanket ban doesn’t make much sense: for example parts of the Caribbean are almost covid free, ditto Israel.

What's the average age in Nigeria though - I'm betting a fair bit younger than even India let alone anywhere Western.

We heard a similar argument about india and South Africa, where its mid 20s. Which is more than Nigeria, but still very young by Western levels...then the tsaumni hit.

Its insanity...and of course they keep doing this showing a bit of leg over summer hols, then delaying decisions....they should have said months ago, sorry no foreign holidays this summer, end of.
Politically its also dumb, as if they do cancel them, people will be even more pissed off.
My sister and family had a week in Mallorca booked for July. Tui cancelled that themselves this week and gave her a refund.
Holiday central here already, and it’s only April. When the hotels and restaurants open it will be busier still.
What are the rules for fully vaccinated Brits visiting the UK from the US? Hoping to come see family in Cornwall this spring.
Six hospitals in the Indian capital Delhi have completely run out of oxygen and doctors say other hospitals have just a few hours' worth of supply left.
Those cricket matches from a few weeks ago with 60k fans seem a lifetime away.
The Indians won't need all those vaccines, they are going to hit herd immunity sometime next week.
I think we can put to bed the theories of countries where due to over crowding people more resistant to lots of things.
Nigeria is the country that still stands out. Even if we take it as given they aren't really testing, no reports of any sort of melt down of the health system.

I can forgive the Govt. for a lot of mistakes, but this very much seems like one where there can be no forgiveness. It's madness.

Husband of Allegra Stratton suggesting the Government might have found a solution to social care here:
"The best solution, however, may be to require the over-40s to buy compulsory social care insurance. The premiums could be deducted directly from their monthly salaries in the same way that student loan repayments are taken off young graduates’ wages."

Maybe just didn't want to share the limelight.
However both parties were chasing the same tiny number of cranks, so this doesn't change anything ultimately.

But there's some solid deadpan sass nevertheless.
Was this it?
They argue Cameron had an ‘expectation of confidence’ so texts are outside of FOI rules. The public instead get below’s blacked out box. https://twitter.com/benrileysmith/status/1385313152754241539/photo/1
I wasn't going to inflict that on PBers, I do have some decorum, believe it or not.
It's people who have some decorum who are the best at truly shocking people when they cut loose, rather than everyday hedonists and shockjocks.
If, rather than being anti-woke, this administration pursued social-policy along the lines Cameron did then they'd be up to 10-12% in the polls.
But they do have the advantage of a useless Tory candidate in London and still polling circa 1%.
Things I try and repress.
Indeed on the latest Yougov 5% of 2019 Tory voters now back ReformUK, more than the 3% of 2019 Tory voters who now back Labour

That would come as a nasty shock to their hordes (OK not "hordes", more like "both") of their remaining voters, who think they're supposed to be basically Labour-lite.
But seems Brian Rose is only front-line politico wiling to (publicly) imbibe the primary product of his own pride & joy.

I presumed it was a joke.

They're still adopting unliberal positions on a number of issues, IMHO.
If it didn't exist, the same people would probably decide to back some other NOTA choice.
It didn't involve cling film, did it?

What games. What japes.

We can forget any official figures the Russians dole out for Covid fatalities. The excess deaths tell the true story. The country's a charnel house.
More hadaway and shite than Hathaway and Lewis.

I honestly think that by the end of next year we may end up with a really different looking FTSE100 with tech companies making up a much bigger proportion of it.
Although from the name you would be forgiven for thinking they give you cancer.
I'll get my coat.

Though the word 'seriously' was absent before 'spoken', it is still a wild ride.
Lockdown sceptics, that is what we would have seen here if you'd had your way.
I have no idea what is going on Nigeria.

Tuition fees introduced when we become students. Now care insurance introduced when we turn 40.
No doubt when Millenials come around to retirement then it will be a case of abolishing pensions.
