I've heard of the Old Oss, and I've been to Padstow, but only in peak tourist season. Of course, as a tourist, I don't mind seeing it in peak tourist season - the town puts on a good show for its hordes of visitors - but that video is different: that is for the community, not the visitors. These people are somewheres of the first order, to whom home, place and community matter.
This sort of thing happens in miniature up and down the country of course. But seldom so melodically.0 -

Flight should be OK for the same reason. The volcano is in a relatively remote location and is apparently not a threat to the airport, let alone Reykjavik itself, which stands no realistic chance of being consumed by lava.dixiedean said:

Side show of Nargothrond for a bit, and Life in Gondolin.

I've been to Mayday in Padstow several times. Danced with the Oss. What that wonderful video doesn't tell you is that the singing - of that one, repetitive, hypnotic song - goes on all day, again and again and again, as everyone gets more and more drunk. By dusk it is really quite pagan and aggressive (in an exciting way) - the drumming and the weird movements of Obby Oss - and you can sense how old the tradition is. Some say it is pre-Norman, maybe much older than that. It certainly feels pre-Christian
And what is marvellous, right now, is knowing that in 50 years time the people of Padstow will still be doing that strange dance and singing their mesmerising song, on Mayday, when Covid is just a distant and faded memory,
God bless Cornwall1 -

He says "modest quotation in foreign languages is permissible" and "some [members] occasionally use Latin quips, and that is perfectly allowable" and "Welsh quips and Scots quotations are allowed, but not full speeches" going on to go into the cost of translation of full speeches.
I read that as three separate but related points about foreign languages, dead/classical languages, and UK languages other than English. I don't actually think it's correct that he was referring to Welsh or Scots as "foreign languages".
The key to speeches in debate is that everyone needs to be able to understand them or they are a complete waste of time.
I believe the three surviving Celtic languages *should* be permitted to be used in the Commons, but the fact is at this moment they are not and unless a democratic decision is taken to change and enable that, speeches should be in English.
It's 'revival' in the 1900s must surely have been entirely academic and artificial.
If you are telling the truth, you could make money telling your story to linguists. Right back to the 1800s??!
A bit like the re-discovery of the ceolacanth for zoologists
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coelacanth
In the world of linguistics this would be close to miraculous. Cornish is often cited, around the world, as a classic example of HOW languages die out, under pressure from more vigorous competitors
So if it was revealed that in Padstow one family continued speaking Cornish, at home, from 1800-ish to the 1980s, that would be HUUUGE. Really. MAJOR0 -

That just seems ridiculous to me.
But we agree on most things.
I think it's possible for a relationship to work in which partners vote for different parties. But I'd be wary of a relationship in which the other party had completely different values. That's not to say I couldn't be friewith someone with completely different values - that describes many of my friends - but I wouldn't want to be making a life together.

Or, the British government got the right people in the right roles, gave them authority to make these decisions, and, because they were well-chosen, they made the right call. Risky, but right. And in a plague you have to take risks.Anabobazina said:

I am all for criticising our government when they get it wrong. And, as they now admit, they got it terribly wrong in 2020 on masks, quarantine, test and trace. Many died needlessly. In the end, there must be a reckoning.
But no one in the West (Australasia excepted, and they are lucky to be isolated) got this entirely "right", Not Germany (as we now see) not Sweden, not anyone.
But HMG did get one vital thing right, in multiple ways. Vaccines. They got the procurement, the investment, the diverse portfolio, the rigorous contracts, the one dose strategy, almost everything. Massive success.
Credit where credit is due. Make Kate Bingham a duchess.

I'm sure it's the biggest reason for the turnaround in polling on Scottish independence. Having done more vaccinations in one day than Ireland has done in three months hasn't gone unnoticed either, although their leading expert on England, Fintan O'Toole, is uncharacteristically silent.Leon said:
Yes. And conversely, the EU's decision to have a pooled vaccine policy, which then turned into a relative nightmare (worsened by the member states, it must be said) proved to be the biggest vindicator OF Brexit.williamglenn said:

Nonsense. The Cornish don't "dislike" people from Devon, at all. They just want to be differentiated from them, that is all - and often government policy lumps them in with Devon (eg the police force or, as was, universities) or even with a greater southwest, inc Bristol, absurdlyAndy_JS said:

The Cornish have their own identity. And have had, for thousands of years. Let them enjoy it.
The Cornish can take a bit of a funny turn when it comes to super-rich Londoners buying all the nice houses on the Fal estuary, that I admit.0 -

When the news is grim, it's nice to have a bit of humour.
Kate Bingham, the former UK vaccine supremo, is holding forth about the irresponsibility of European leaders in undermining confidence in the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Betting Post
F1: this isn't my type of bet (low odds, longish time frame). But Ladbrokes has a best rookie market Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri) is 1.08. Schumacher and Mazepin are 10 and 15 respectively.
Tsunoda is almost certain to win this, barring serious injury that stops him racing. Haas have already said they aren't developing their car this year. The AlphaTauri was significantly faster last year anyway.
So, if a low odds but very likely bet is your thing, give this a look.1 -

Or because it is quasi-ineffective. It's easy to lose track when discussing the EU's policy towards vaccination. The EU and vaccine common sense haven't been on speaking terms for months now.0 -

No one in the industry has an issue with the concept of risk/benefit. All pharmaceutical products, including vaccines, have side effects. The question is whether the benefits outweigh those risks.
The answers may differ on an individual vs a population level1 -
Astonishing that anyone would defend what Bingham said about its being undesirable to vaccinate the whole population - with any vaccine - for fear of serious side-effects.Charles said:
