It's a toxix concept, which divides everyone, and teaching it to kids is just mind-blowing
That letter from that head teacher is beyond belief. Where do you begin with this venomous nonsense?
No actual 'theory'?
Daftness really is independent of skin tone.
Kids can be safely taught all sorts of nonsense - they really are going to be able to decide. Admittedly some thoughts stick a bit. For example, somehow, I associate 'Harvest Festival' with tinned food. (We tipped up as children in a line to hand over our tins of beans)
Perhaps in a similar way the colour of peoples skins isn't invisible to me. I do see it, and I do react differently. Mainly I'm interested in their stories. A mate of mine from work was from Zimbabwe - what stories he may have heard from his ancestors.
The human race is one, but the stories are many. The stories are important - good, bad, or whatever.0 -

Yes. Think of the damage Blair did with a decade of posturing at EU summits for short-term domestic political gain, all the nonsense about "battling for Britain" over and over. He did nothing to create a sense of a common endeavour.Casino_Royale said:
I'm not sure that would have worked, in the way it did (sort of) in 1975.Andy_JS said:
The thing that astonished me about the Remain campaign was that it was almost completely negative. I kept waiting for the Remain party political broadcast which featured rousing evocations of European heritage and music in order to make people feel proud of being part of the continent. It never happened. I realise now that it probably would have offended the nostrums of political correctness to do that type of broadcast.Richard_Nabavi said:
It wasn't complacency, Cameron worked his socks off. However, he was trying to ensure that the Conservative Party didn't destroy itself in the process, so he countermanded some of the attacks on Boris, Gove etc which the Remain campaign wanted to run. An admirable scruple, but unfortunately as it turned out a foolish one, helping both to lose the referendum and ultimately to destroy the very thing he was trying to preserve.LadyG said:
Indeed. To say Remain was really bad, you have to believe it was led by clueless people. It was not. Cameron and Osborne have their faults, but they are far from stupid.
The main sin of Remain was probably complacency (always a problem with Cameron). They thought they were going to be facing a campaign led by Nigel Farage, Bill Cash and John Redwood, which would indeed have been a walkover; Instead they got Dom Cummings, Michael Gove and Boris Johnson.
They didn't readjust quickly enough. They didn't anticipate problems.
Tim Shipman's book on this really is a masterpiece of political instant history.
The trouble was that far too many hearts had been lost on the EU over the preceding 25 years.
It was no use just blaming British tabloids for that, as far too many European politicians (even today) do channelling the self-awareness of Hillary Clinton.
It was their own rhetoric and action that did for it.
If you create an us and them climate why should you be surprised that people will decide to walk away from it?0 -
-
The Government should simply ban everyone - everywhere - from using racially charged rhetoric like "white privilege" in the state school sector, in the same way they insist on inclusive teaching of sex education in islamic schools.

If its important to them it is only good manners.SeaShantyIrish2 said:"There are hardly any racists in the UK. "
Really? Personally think that humans are so innately tribal. God knows why, but it's true. Meaning that we ALL harbor some degree of racism. Note that Lyndon Johnson would semi-habitually throw out the N-word in private conversation. Yet he did more to advance the cause of civil rights in America (for example, 1964 Voting Rights Act) than any president since Abraham Lincoln.
As for UK, on my last visit happened to witness a confrontation between a group of British Asian teenagers and White British bobbies. Have no idea how the coppers vote, but they didn't come off as hard-core Moselyites. As for the kids, they didn't look like delinquents or gangbangers. Yet you could have cut the mutual dislike with a meat ax.
Consider my own self to be a decent, left-minded enlightened kind of guy. Yet occasionally find thoughts popping into my head that would shame Strom Thurmond. When this happens, bite my tongue and think about what my mother said when I was ten and she heard my use the N-word; not out of malice, but just cause other kids said it & I thought is was colorful speech (no pun intended).
She told me, that word is a VERY bad word. That I should never say it. That she knew Black kids when she went to high school (there were none in my school, and only one Black person in the whole town) who had bee extremely hurt by that word.
Will never forget what she said, and the way she said it. And I pray I never do.
My grandmother too. She would have taken the view that the British Empire was in general, a good thing, but considered apartheid and Jim Crow to be unChristian.
My Dad certainly laughed (and told) one or two racist jokes, but he also upbraided a fellow commuter who (rudely) once asked an unfamiliar black man who turned up at the railway station at 7am one morning ["what are YOU doing here?" etc.] and told him he absolutely couldn't say that. And one of his closest friends is Japanese.
People are complex.
Casino, you're dad and my dad also sound like peas in a pod, both in their love of a good joke (even if crude) AND their dislike of injustice and willingness to call it out. Of course my old man was big, tall and a former boxer. Regardless of height or girth, your's was clearly a big man too.1 -

That stuck out to me too. I watched an Oxford Union lecture about black history with a popular BLM media figure. It was very interesting, and there too, there was excoriation of white colonialism, but his case that the achievements of black civilisations were deliberately ignored and downplayed in white historical accounts (which was fascinating), was greatly based on the military domination by these black civilisations of their neighbours.williamglenn said:

We've imported a toxic American divide with no justification. Britain was doing well, still a long way to go, but making a lot of progress. Black British people do not regularly die at the hands of racist cops. It's just a fact.
Yet we're now acting like they do.
If this madness continues it's going to make everything worse. If you teach white kids they are inherently racist, and there's nothing they can do, then they might as well be racist. If you teach kids they must see race and colour everywhere, then that is what they will see: race and colour, difference and division.
It's hateful and it's so counter-productive.

There is radicalism in this approach but it is strangely hollow. It has a make-believe quality, as when a child gets more play out of the packaging than the gift. Johnson said he wanted Brexit so badly, he stamped his feet and got it for Christmas. But he cast the thing itself aside and sits in the empty box, brrm-brrming, beep-beeping excitedly, going nowhere.Stark_Dawning said:Yes, it did all feel a bit back to the future a few days ago - Boris prattling on about the coming of some vague golden age for want of anything else to say. It's a toxix concept, which divides everyone, and teaching it to kids is just mind-blowing
That letter from that head teacher is beyond belief. Where do you begin with this venomous nonsense?
It's phenomenally stupid. But, then again, left-wing white liberals are phenomenal dickheads.
Thanks to Mr Gove and Mr Cummings, increasing numbers of working-class white kids are now being educated at Acadamies and Free Schools, where they’re not subjected to this racist claptrap.
Yeah, how do you explain that to, say, poor white working class schoolgirls in Rotherham? How dare they flaunt their privilege!
Notice that the leaflet always capitalises "Black" but "white" is lower case. This is now semi-official policy.
The issues in the USA are more nuanced, with a much more recent history of segregation and institutional racism. IMO, and this is a delicate argument, the issues there are as much about class as about race too, except that the race argument has a lot of people supporting it.
The problem with US police is as much a cultural violence issue as a race issue, many working-class white people are victims of police brutality without a massive campaign protesting.
I am going for an evening stroll to soothe my soul2 -

Its like we've gone through a revolution in a few weeks, the terror lasted a few days, the reeducation campaign is well underway but shortly we will head in to a counter revolution, the signs of which are everywhere. It would have been possible to miss the whole thing if you aren't on twitter. My Mum doesn't know what is going on, she just watches bbc news once a day, the only thing she saw was the 'largely peaceful' protest in London which was only news because everyone was supposed to be in lockdown. "Take Back Control" was a great slogan, the Remain campaign was weak but at the end of the day we left the EU because unscrupulous politicians and their media allies convinced 52% of the voters that their problems and the country's failings would all be solved by leaving the EU.LadyG said:The reason Remain lost, in a nutshell

Also, why did they ever let themselves be saddled with a sad word like Remain?
They should have gone for STAY. That's a much warmer, kinder word. Oh, please stay. Won't you stay for another drink? I'd love to STAY
Idiots.
It was almost impossible for the remainers to counteract that argument because it was not possible to prove otherwise and people believed what they wanted to believe. Any attempt to argue otherwise was airily dismissed as "Project Fear" or "Fake News" by the metropolitan elite in the grand Trumpton manner.
It was a great way to win the vote, all they have to do now is make it all happen.0 -

Wonderfully uninspiring nonsense from the Great Optimist today. As with Trump, all he has is bonhomie, repartee and endless positivity and, let's be fair, it won him two London Mayoral elections and a General Election with an 80-seat majority so I shouldn't knock it.
As Johnson is doing the rounds of WWII leaders, having adopted FDR instead of Churchill, I suppose the possibility is he'll go Uncle Joe on us or perhaps more Benito in terms of the flowing rhetoric though a factory in Dudley isn't as inspiring as a medieval balcony in Rome.
I'd have liked some recognition the world has changed and there is a revolution in how people work and want to work. The day of the back office, the day of the commuter, both are now history and the age of the Homeworker has dawned - a Place (where nobody dares to go, sorry, Olivia) culture where all you need is close at hand.
Instead it's flats, flats and more flats and a drop in the ocean of the backlog maintenance bill for schools but I suppose with a deficit out of control it's better than nothing and it'll be interesting to see how Sunak (who will probably now be "bad cop") walks the line between Johnsonian aspiration (probably the only aspiration is re-election) and the reality of a burgeoning deficit not helped by a new wave of unemployment.
I suppose the new unemployed will all become bricklayers on the vast construction sites of Johnson's Britain. I was reflecting on the "New Deal" notion and of course Roosevelt wasn't the only one who spent big in the 1930s on infrastructure projects - the autobahn down which the allied tanks drove so rapidly in 1945 were a product of the Nazi equivalent1 -

Thought I'd try and track down the crosstabs on the USA Today/Suffolk Poll which showed Biden leading Trump 53-41.

The gender split explains the lead - among men it's tied at 47 but among women Biden leads 59-35, a colossal 24-point advantage.
The geographical split shows Biden winning the North East 58-37 and the West 59-37. Trump wins the South 52-41 but incredibly (and completely contrary to the PBS-Marist poll at the weekend), Biden is winning the Midwest 61-32.
Yes, I know...
The White vote is split 49-48 in Trump's favour which would be a 12% swing on 2016.
I just cannot accept the Midwest numbers which look ridiculous and would see Biden chewing up a fair chunk of what we would think of safe Red states.0 -
On topic, I don't think Theresa May is causing any great problems for the administration. This isn't going to cut through in places where the conservatives need to hold or gain votes.
I agree it is quite funny the way that she exposes the contradictions of what Gove is saying here, but we have become used to politicians being hypocrites so our expectations have decreased somewhat. The current lot seem like they can't be bothered to make much effort at all, maybe they regard parliament in much the same way as the average voter: a pointless performance. Perhaps that doesn't matter in the end, they should be judged on what they actually achieve.
