As an ex-newspaperman Michael Gove must know how the media’s attention can easily forget a story and even though it is just 2 days before the MP vote only four national papers are making his admission of taking cocaine their big story.

Sadly, mr B2, I don't thinks there's enough sense in the Tory Party, although it will soon after be shown that there's a great more in the country at large.

When will this be over. It’s boring already. With exception of Rory they’re all a bit shit. Since Rory isn’t going to win, can they pick straws? Then they can back to the main job of tearing each other apart.

How? That would give us a choice of a posh racist philanderer who has been a fiasco in high office and will say whatever he thinks will win him votes:

Or Jeremy Corbyn,* who is identical except he has not yet held high office so he has only made a complete shambles of lots of low-level appointments that wouldn't have taxed a fairly bright fourteen year old.

That would be a truly dreadful choice.

*Be honest, you were expecting a different name, weren't you?

I disagree entirely Jonathan. Not all of them are a bit shit.

Some of them are extremely shit.

And one is f***ing epically shit.

Gove I think had the most impressive launch yesterday along with Hancock, the fact almost all the top tier have admitted taking illegal drugs bar Javid mean the cocaine allegations against Gove have less impact anyway.

The LDs would be over 20% again in a Boris v Corbyn general election with Yougov though the Brexit Party would fall back to 13%

Good list. My top three: Stewart, Hunt and Javid.
The liberal vs the dullard vs the Saj

When Hancock comes on the telly I just feel sorry for him.
Gove is usually off his head and married to Lady Macbeth.
    Leadsom is truly dire.
Raab, if only he was half as good as he thinks he is.
    Boris cares about Boris only.
    The others , meh.

I meant that people were expecting Corbyn to be the one in the first line and therefore the name would have been 'or Boris Johnson.'

I don't recall any allegations about Gove and cocaine. Admissions yes.

Indeed. I'm not saying that Boris will not win the leadership. However the Conservative MP's and/or membership have history in picking a total electoral dud - Hague, May and of course IDS who has just endorsed Boris.

    Gove
    Javid
    Johnson
    Hunt
    Raab
    Leadsom
    McVey
    Stewart
    Hancock
    Harper

To be fair to Harper he is last just because I can not think who he is.
On personal choice completely outwith my book:

    Stewart
    Hunt
    Javid
    Gove
    Raab
    Leadsom
    Hancock
    Harper
    Johnson
    Mcvey
    Mine are:

    Johnson
    Stewart
    Javid
    McVey
    Hancock
    Gove
    Leadsom

    What did she say?
She was on R4 this morning talking about NDAs, and when asked about Raab’s use of one asserted that the claim against him in the employment tribunal case had been ‘vexatious’.

Which rather blunted her otherwise sensible comments on the misuse of NDAs.
And raised the question of what basis she had for that assertion.

This was the agreement (which came to light when Raab sued the Mail on Sunday)

    https://www.buzzfeed.com/alexwickham/dominic-raab-confidentiality-agreement-female-colleague
According to publicly available court documents, Raab’s confidentiality clause was agreed back in August 2007 — before he became an MP — when he was working as chief of staff to David Davis.

The documents said both Raab and Davis entered into a "compromise agreement" with a woman who also worked in Davis’s office.

The agreement brought to an end both the woman’s employment with Davis, and a claim she had made at an employment tribunal, according to a letter from Raab’s solicitor that is quoted in the court documents.

In 2011, Raab’s solicitor wrote to the woman warning that if she breached the terms of the agreement she would “be required to repay the sum [she was] paid in consideration for the confidentiality obligations”. She made clear she had no intention of breaching the agreement.

In 2012, Raab won an apology from the Mail on Sunday after it published “unfounded” allegations about his behaviour....

Put simply in the present situation enough Tories, MP's and membership, are willing to bet the house on Boris in the hope that name recognition and his Trump-lite personality will outweigh his huge baggage.

They'll go all in with this high stakes poker game knowing that if Boris blows it then the general election in a few months will be a massacre for the Conservatives as Hunt said at his launch yesterday.

I was out for a dinner party last night. As usual I was the only one who would self declare as a Tory in the room. Most of the others are the sort of people who supported SLAB before it went bizarre. The odd Lib Dem.

They tend to like Ruth but what surprised me last night was how much they all liked Rory. It lends to support to the theory that he is the Tory non Tories like, much, much more so than Boris. A party looking to win elections and lengthen its reach, as opposed to ideological purity, would do well to reflect on that. But I don't suppose that they will.

Boris still gathering more endorsements I see. It's hard not to assume he will therefore pick up a decent number of supporters of other candidates too. Dispiriting.i
I dont think my MP has backed anyone but has said Boris is way more popular on the doorstep, which is a clear indication and presumably a factor for plenty of the non declared.

Not really Cameron in 2005 led Davis in the hypotheticals as did David Miliband in 2010 over Ed Miliband and they proved pretty accurate.

In the US Biden does best in the hypotheticals as he has broadest appeal

Boris has a certain, je ne sais quoi No I have no idea what it is either.
But he appeals amongst the politically less engaged. And appeals to women too.

As a politically engaged, heterosexual man I can't see where it comes from either. But it is there in fact, in the polling and his mistresses.

On pretty much every measure Americans are batter off now than before Trump got elected (not necessarily because of anything he did). If he makes his campaign the same that Reagan he could win again.. (of course Reagan was using this as a criticism of the previous administration. )

Of course not. Either the MPs are buying Boris' plan or they think he will win anyway, or they think they need him for a GE. But given he is meant to be less popular among MPs than the members and hes easily going to be top among MPs, it's pretty clear Rory, who is trying to tell members and MPs that they are wrong about no deal and their promises, will not do well. Hes done well to get this far. Now a question of who loses the first ballot and how many .

The Conservatives will not pick Rory. However I hope there are enough MP's that support Stewart to give him a solid base for the future. If the Conservatives pick Boris and crash and burn then they'll need leaders such as Stewart to pick over the wreckage and move forward.

Perhaps unusually given his background, Rory seems human. Many of the other candidates do not.

That counts for a lot with the GBP.
He's polite and actually engages with peoples' opinions respectfully and intelligently. He has no chance does he?
I like Stewart too, not least because he's the only candidate with anything interesting to say, regardless of whether I agree with it. But he is not unicorn free. He says the UK must Brexit but must not be a rule taker. Second class satellite of the EU is the price of Brexit. People are somehow aware of this.

I guess you can take only so much reality in one go. Stewart is the candidate for after the reality hits and people are totally done with Brexit.

As very much a non-Tory, my support of Rory is only partially that he's not a No Dealer. His overt attempts to be outward looking makes me think he genuinely cares about the country more than the party, and his dedication to longer-term thinking on economic competence and so on makes me think he would be good at actually doing the job of PM and not be tempted into short term policies which make him look good but someone else has to pay for.

As a Remainer, I also think his way of looking at Brexit (as a situation where we have to pick the best of limited options and not one where we can create an ideal outcome regardless of what the EU wants) is broadly right and the approach of most leadership candidates (that we can get a better outcome if we just push harder and believe more in it) is broadly wrong. But don't underestimate how much non-Brexit factors drive his support from the people who he appeals to. I'm no fan of May's Deal. But I think someone who, for want of a better phrase, works in the real world will make better decisions on a whole range of things than someone who thinks admitting there are limits on what we can have is treachery.

I fundamently think that the Tory party has to elect Boris to get him out of their system.

He'll be a disaster, but I have no fail until everything falls, that something anything, not maybe it the tory party itself can be rebuilt from the ashes for the centre right.

Not that politically unengaged. Actual voters but ones that don't overly pay attention to the news. Plenty of them out there, the same as tribal Labour voters who would tick the red rose box even if Hitler lead the party (They don't bother heading out at anything other than GEs generally).

The politically very engaged are us, voting even in the police commissioner elections... we are atypical.

It’s somewhat amusing that Javid’s nickname is the most interesting thing about him.

On investment my experience is that it goes in ebbs and flows.

A few years of high investment is followed by a few years of reduced investment as the best investment opportunities are taken up.

Given that property costs are high and workforce availability is currently low Britain should be be a less enticing place for investment than other European countries where the opposite applies.

Off topic, on a sample size of two I spoke to two very non-political people in ultra marginal Crewe & Nantwich over the weekend. One of whom is my half-sister, who rarely votes.

Conclusions: (1) everyone is fed up of Brexit, and aren’t sure if it’s ever going to happen (2) immigration hasn’t gone away as a concern, both were still concerned at the volume and worried that would never be tackled now (3) both felt very sorry for Theresa May who they felt had done her best and (4) none of them had a clue about any of the new contenders, except recognising Boris; “is he still going?”

Make of that what you will.

Matt Hancock is very clear that No Deal is off the table on the basis that Parliament won't allow it. This in truth must mean that plan B (or C or D but anyway, the final position), must be to Remain because there is nowhere else to go for an end game expedient. Hence his faux insistence that his plan A cannot fail. Not good enough.

I wouldn’t ever vote Tory and they wouldn’t but he does get some grudging respect and is seen as sane and quite sensible . He also has a very interesting life story and many have been following him on social media .

Mr. Algakirk, to be fair, it's a failing of almost all politicians on every side that they're happy to rule out X, but then fail to say what they'd do if they can't get Y, even though Z is the only logical answer.

See also Hammond, saying No Deal was unacceptable. That being so, the Deal has failed repeatedly, the only option becomes Remain. Has he overtly backed Remain? Of course not.

MPs have recently been fantastic at deciding what they're against but rather less splendid at deciding what they're for, with a majority against every option.

Anyone else think Ladbrokes have the odds on Boris' first round votes a bit wrong? They only really make sense if you assume he will struggle to improve on his declared numbers, but there are several dozen MPs out there who have backed no-one.

Maybe things will be different this time, but in 2016 everyone got a bit of a boost going into the ballots. Yet you can make a small arb combining all the 80+ brackets, and quite a big one if you go to 90+. Keep in mind he's on 69 declared now.

    Trump won of course
Indeed. I'm not saying that Boris will not win the leadership. However the Conservative MP's and/or membership have history in picking a total electoral dud - Hague, May and of course IDS who has just endorsed Boris.

Boris as PM .... what could possibly go wrong ?!?!?!?!?!?
Trump won. The GOP hooked itself along for the ride. In office but not in power. What will be interesting will be to see what’s left when Trump is gone.

Do the Tories really want to go down the same road?
Boris is like a drug for many Tories .... Er ....

Boris is the only Tory who gets a majority with Yougov against Corbyn anyway, Hunt, Javid, Gove and Raab all see a Corbyn minority government so the Tories have nothing to lose by going for Boris
There is a very ugly story doing the rounds about Boris, a melon, and Natalie Rowe. You might want to google that before throwing your hat in with this guy.

I wouldn’t ever vote Tory and they wouldn’t but he does get some grudging respect and is seen as sane and quite sensible . He also has a very interesting life story and many have been following him on social media .

The thing I like about him is he’s actually putting himself out there and taking a big risk with his campaign . He may well be another who gets removed by the no deal death cult .

If that’s representative, then his pitch is pointless.

Mr. Smithson, interesting post. I do think Rory would be better at seeing off Lib Dems than probably any other candidate, but might risk losing the right wing to BP.

I'm assuming she's a Ruthie loyalist so might well be backing The Iron Saj ?

If you thought Grayling was useless, this one is a belter. I doubt she could run a bath, a fine specimen of the Tory dross elected in Scotland. I despair at times and believe Scotland gets what it deserves when morons like this are elected to positions of power.

The JackW /Jacobite Conservative Leadership Rankings :

    1. - Rory Stewart - The surname says it all ....

    ...............................................................................

Group Two - In Order Of Least Worst For The Nation :

    2. Jeremy Hunt - Dull, worthy and vaguely competent
    3. Michael Gove - A complete sh*t but vaguely competent
    4. Matt Hancock - Completely vague and vaguely competent
    5. Sajid Javid - Not entirely vague and not entirely incompetent

Group Three - Ranking In Order Of Rank Incredulity Of Their Rankness :

    6. Mark Harper - The cab rank awaits.
    7. Andrea Leadsom - Ranks as a mother but no rebirth of the nation
    8. Dominic Rabb - Requires proroguing to Dover for re-education and re-ranking
    9. Ester McVey - A rank disaster but with added delusions as a Thatcher successor

Group Four - Special Grouping For MIA Candidates

    10. Boris Johnson - The Donald Trump went To Eton candidate.

My Scottish relatives must have been to your dinner party. I was emailed about how good Rory was weeks ago. I suspect the more thoughtful Scots are less impressed by the tinsel and glitter of Boris than they are the quietly thoughtful Rory. As Slab voters I've suggested Boris would be the best hope for a Tory collapse.

Er ....

Wasn't Natalie Rowe also George Osborne's 'associate' ?

Anyone else think Ladbrokes have the odds on Boris' first round votes a bit wrong? They only really make sense if you assume he will struggle to improve on his declared numbers, but there are several dozen MPs out there who have backed no-one.

Maybe things will be different this time, but in 2016 everyone got a bit of a boost going into the ballots. Yet you can make a small arb combining all the 80+ brackets, and quite a big one if you go to 90+. Keep in mind he's on 69 declared now.

Declared doesn't mean all will vote for you - what you do in public and what you do in private (and the vote is a secret private vote) may be entirely different.
Sure, but in 2016 not a single candidate didn't get more votes in the ballot than backers beforehand. No-one was even close.

I could see myself tactically voting for a Rory-led Tory party in my ultra marginal constituency. He's preferable to a Corbyn-led LAB
Well, as there may be two GEs in next year or so, perhaps at one of them you will get your chance!

She doesn't support anyone but wants immigrants to be allowed to come into Scotland with skillsets that earn less than £30,000 a year...
