Especially as the concept of Australian Citizenship didn't exist until 1948, so everyone was legally a British Subject. I don't see how the constitution can interpreted to classify the UK and Commonwealth countries as "foreign powers".kle4 said:
I understand the reasoning for dual citizens being potentially problematic, at least in direct relations between two nations where the interests might be opposed, but Australia's rule seems unduly harsh, particularly when it seems nationality law in many nations grants citizenship to many people with peripheral connection to their nation, or can be asked for on their behalf without their knowledge by someone else.surbiton said:
I am not sure why it should debar anyone. A dual national is not a half-national. Boris Johnson was until recently a US citizen as well as a UK citizen. He could well have been the UK PM.foxinsoxuk said:Bloody foreigners infiltrating Canberra again:

When a charity decides to go political, they face losing some donors and have to hope that they offset those by gaining others.
Consider the National Trust. They decided to rip up the written legacies of their benefactors over field sports rights on land left to them, for example. They lost some members over that (me, for example). Whether they gained any members on the flip-side is debatable. Similarly with me and the RSPCA on the same subject.
Going all SJW risks alienating some of your philanthropic base. By virtue signalling they are gambling with lifesaving levels of fund raising. That's all. It's not a political thing. Charities should stay out of politics.0 -

Lol - and pigs might fly. You have no more idea than anyone what motivated people to vote Tory. Who knows what could happen next time.justin124 said:
But several of the Tory gains were due to Labour voters voting tactically to defeat the SNP and doing so unaware of the Labour surge taking place in the later stages of the campaign. Most of them are likely to feel they misdirected themselves with the result that next time Labour could win from third place in seats such as East Renfrew , Stirling etc where Labour's vote share could well jump from circa 20% to circa 35%.felix said:
Not especially likely at all. Not a single Tory seat where Labour are anywhere near them. You'd need a landslide performance to achieve that and current polling [ yes, I know] suggests no such thing.FF43 said:Not a lot of upside for the Conservatives in that list. They are likely to lose as many seats to Labour as they win off the SNP, as the Unionist tactical vote unwinds and Labour becomes more credible as winners of seats. 15 to 30 seats for Labour is entirely doable.

Finally - some useful science! Whisky/water dilution.
Published today in Nature
Bjorn C. G. Karlsson and Ran Friedman
Despite the growing knowledge of the nature of water-alcohol mixtures on a molecular level, much less is known on the interaction of water, alcohol and small solutes. In particular, the nature of the interaction between the solvent and taste-carrying molecules, such as guaiacol, is not known. To address this gap, we used MD simulations to study the distribution of guaiacol in water-alcohol mixtures of different concentrations. Our simulations revealed that guaiacol is present at the air-liquid interface at ethanol concentrations that correspond to the alcohol content of bottled or diluted whiskies. Because the drink is consumed at the interface first, our findings help to understand why adding water to whisky helps to enhance its taste. A molecular understanding of the nature of taste compounds in water-alcohol mixtures allows for optimizing the taste of alcoholic spirits. [...] Overall, there is a fine balance between diluting the whisky to taste and diluting the whisky to waste.

A few months ago I was in a second-hand bookshop and working on the grounds that God does not forgive you if you leave without buying one, I bought a copy of John Simpson's "A Mad World, My Masters" for about 50p. In it he relates his interviews of various ne'er-do-wells. One of them was with Maurice Rossel, the International Red Cross delegate who visited Theresienstadt in 1944 and reported that conditions there were fair and reasonable. Rossel's rationale was that criticising the Nazis would serve no purpose other than prevent further visits by the Red Cross. A defensible point-of-view but one that neutered the Red Cross and saved no livesGeoffM said:I was making a serious and non-political point. The reason why I bring this up is that charities are frequently faced with circumstances that can only be described as political. It is a little-known fact that in the first few days of any given disaster the first-responders are mostly Christian charities, who receive much funding from the various North American congregations, and how to deal with the politics of disaster is always a problem. But the idea that charities should stay out of politics is difficult to defend, since they spend a lot of their time in it up to their neck.0 -

It is utterly ridiculous position for a settler nation like Australia. When a charity decides to go political, they face losing some donors and have to hope that they offset those by gaining others... Going all SJW risks alienating some of your philanthropic base. I don't think that's necessarily true. Take an example with opposite colours. Say you're a charity in Venezuala trying to alleviate desperate poverty, and the Government keeps making matters worse. Do you just keep plugging on, or do you say something to draw attention to the source much of the problem? I think there's a case for the latter, and it's more a judgment issue that a simple right or wrong.GeoffM said:

Consider the National Trust. They decided to rip up the written legacies of their benefactors over field sports rights on land left to them, for example. They lost some members over that (me, for example). Whether they gained any members on the flip-side is debatable. Similarly with me and the RSPCA on the same subject.
Going all SJW risks alienating some of your philanthropic base. By virtue signalling they are gambling with lifesaving levels of fund raising. That's all. It's not a political thing. Charities should stay out of politics.
I can see it the other way too - in the Red Cross example that viewcode cites, I think that though actually lying to appease a monstrous government goes too far (he should perhaps have at least declined to comment), I value the Red Cross for not taking political stances - we need some who are trusted by everyone to be discreetly helpful to victims.
Where I do agree is that charities should acknowledge good work by people who some of their staff might personally not support. i currently work as Head of Policy for an animal welfare charity, and have said publically that Michael Gove is potentially the best Secretary of State for DEFRA in 20 years in view of his recent excellent speeches. It's simply true, and my private political persuasion is irrelevant.0 -

I can never get a complete set of a series, with covers from the same period, of the same size. It goes paperback, paperback, paperback, hardback, larger paperback, missing, American paperback with the yellow-edged paper...
When my ship comes in I will replace all my books with consistent copies that line up, on shelves of the same size and colour. Problem is that at that point the universe will be complete and the stars will start going out...0 -

You appear not to understand how 'swing' is calculated. Beyond that ,however, it has to be significant that whilst across Scotland the Labour vote went up by 3% , in seats such as East Renfrew - Stirling - Aberdeen South - Ochil & Perthshire South - and Ayr,Carrick - the Labour vote fell back from its 2015 level. It is not unreasonable to assume that that was due to tactical voting with the result that the Labour vote has been suppressed in those seats. Next time I would expect that to unwind with Labour polling well beyond its 2015 vote shares there.felix said:

Thanks though it is at least a platform for the 2019 town council elections. I got about 37%, in the 2016 district elections the Tories got 34% in the same ward so it was alright. The last town council elections were fought in May 2015 when Dave won his majority. The LDs put out 6 leaflets and threw the book at it over the local plan so while I am obviously disappointed to lose it at least got my name known and is something to build on but we need more action days locally and more leafletsAndyJS said:Commiserations to HYUFD.

The Brexit lie machine has kicked into gear again:
Leaving EU without deal would not be a disaster, says thinktank.

British consumers could benefit from the removal of all tariffs because the UK would be able to import goods at lower prices from countries on which the EU imposes high tariffs, such as oranges from South Africa, according to the IEA.
And what exactly is this high tariff we're currently paying on oranges from South Africa? 0%!
