Thatcher won big majorities while winning barely any seats in big urban areas in the north. What she DID win was suburban northern marginals like Tynemouth and Bury, and it is there the Tories need to win to get a majority!0

A war veteran who died with just a handful of relatives to mourn him has been given a hero's funeral after a care home manager sent out a hopeful email which went global.
About 500 people attended the funeral today of ex-Royal Marine Albert Vaughan who died on his 89th birthday at a Staffordshire nursing home last month.
Standard bearers and members of the public lined the streets as Mr Vaughan's coffin was taken to St Editha's Church, in Tamworth.
It comes after staff at Marmion Nursing Home in the town said they only knew a handful of relatives who could attend - so manager Chris Homer sent a speculative email to the National Ex-Services Association explaining what had happened.
Within hours people across the planet had responded - from as far away as Australia, India and Dubai.
Mr Vaughan had spent the last 21 years of his life at the nursing home and died of pneumonia just two hours after his birthday.

On Labour's Virtual Phone Bank.Good response but by luck I contacted the brother of one of my old patients;He informed me his brother died aged 48 and that the benefit changes were driving him mad again and his carer,his mum,was also going mad.
These benefit changes are starting to really hurt people and I am grateful for my NHS treatment which enabled me to join with DPAC and protest at Atos office in Norwich every month.Bit wet today but good response from the public,except one shout from a car window of "cunts"which made me feel even more like I was doing the right thing-there is a lot of hate out there directed at disabled people.This is completely engineered by the British Establishment.They could not give ATOSs.

Reportedly the North Koreans have told Japan they'll be the first to be hit in a nuclear strike.
This of course assumes that the North Koreans have successfully weaponised a nuclear device on a missile, which is open to dispute.
You have to hand it to the regime of the Kims, they know how to act the head case and have the world jumping in response. Its when they start to forget its an act that you'll really have to worry. Its this thats worrying many.
The one unknown question is why the Chinese have significantly stepped up its forces on the North Korean border in the last 10 days. Political statement (and to who?), practical purpose or a bit of both? This remains inscrutable as many a Chinese politician. If you believe Western commentators the Chinese are deeply frustrated by the North Koreans but the Kims also represent the cold war Asian version of Cuba with a lot (but not all) strings leading to Beijing..but with a lot more threat.
Whatever the real Chinese position they are getting a lot of useful information on many levels right now watching how its opponents in the region are reacting.0 -

A question for the knowledgeable from the ignorant: it is apparently exceptionally difficult to create a nuclear weapon package that can fit on a missile - size, weight, and resilience are massive problems. The only advantages I can think of for missile delivery is that it would be an air rather than ground blast, meaning there would be more blast damage and (I think) less fallout. Secondly, a ship-based operation would require much time and planning in advance, whereas a missile can be launched either instantly or in a number of hours, depending on the type.
So why go to the bother and expense of missile delivery?0 -
