1) BUYING PROPERTY AT AUCTIONSeanT said:OFF-topic, but are there any financial experts in the house? Is Mister Nabavi around, or Charles, perhaps?
It's just that (and I am genuinely not trying to sound like a smug twat, or at least no more than normal) thanks to the nice Germans and Dutch and Nordics and Frogs, I have stupid amounts of money now sitting in my various accounts, in cash. A very sizeable six figure sum.
What the F do I do with it? I've already got a fairly hefty sum in shares. I'm invested in a start-up company. My main asset is London property so it doesn't make sense to buy more property, as diversifying is key, isn't it? Plus it could crash.
So where do you put it? Land? Gold? What? Premium Bonds?
Advice welcome. And yes this is a Very Very First World Problem and I am sorry for sounding like a git, but I am genuinely clueless. And pb is often very good in these situations.
Auctions are held in England and Wales in a given area about once every two months. You can get a list of properties here: https://www.eigpropertyauctions.co.uk/ . You can get a list of auctions here: http://www.sequenceauctions.co.uk/ . Legal documents are available to the buyer 2-4 weeks before the auction: get a lawyer to read them and a chartered surveyor to do a RICS homebuyers report beforehand. The property may have problems that you cannot cope with: asbestos tiles, subsidence, Japanese knotweed, nonexistent sewage, health hazard, missing floors, the vendor not owning the property...so these steps are not optional. Arrive at the auction on time and do not leave your seat: times will be approximate and from first bid to gavel down is about 90 seconds, so do not go for a piss. If you cannot cope with the process you can see the auctioneer beforehand and he will bid on your behalf. On gavel down you have to pay the deposit there-and-then: if you do not (or if you've bid on the wrong property) you will be escorted from the premises and banned nationwide. The remainder must be paid depending on the property, but 21-28 days is about right. The property sold can be anything from mansion to a very small patch of agricultural land
2) BUYING DEVELOPMENT PROPERTY VIA A SURVEYOR
A RICS surveyor will have experience of the local area and can point you to properties for (re)development. If a property is without planning permission then an option can be purchased. The surveyor can put together a team for you or point you in the direction of somebody who can. A list can be found here: http://www.rics.org/uk/0 -

Sounds pretty mainsteam Smithian competitive advantage theory. Do what you're best at.NickPalmer said:Talking of charities, I'm reading Macaskill's "Doing Good Better" at the moment. Most of it is fairly obvious to anyone who has an interest in charity and a vaguely mathematical leaning (editorial summary: decide what the most effective charity is, using independent data, and give them what you can, don't be distracted by cute ideas that don't actually work).
But one of his themes is that doing good works (as I've just urged on Sean) is a bad idea for high-earners - they should maximise their income, however frivolous or controversial it may be, and give the surplus to the efficient charity, not mess about trying to do stuff themselves. For example, he says that cosmetic surgeons shouldn't switch to heart surgery - if they're good at making film stars beautiful, they should stick to that and generate funds for mosquito nets.
What do others think of this? I see the logic and like his disciplined focus, but think it underestimates the willingness of people to give more if they have an interest and overestimates the dedicated will to give away extra income - I suspect the cosmetic surgeon who redoubles his efforts on this basis will olten end up buying another yacht.
I want to build BNC a new cricket pavilion eventually, rather than donating them 20 quid a month. 20 quid a month could turn into 60 quid a month buying books....compound that and we're alot closer to a new pavilion.0 -

Blair is hated.
He is hated by the right and is hated by the far left. Why? Because he defeated them and they will never forgive him.
The reason they complain so much today is that they still fear him. There is that chance he might win.0 -

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/05/22/david-cameron-and-george-osborne-brexit-would-put-our-economy-in/
It says ' WEEKS AND MONTHS AFTER A VOTE TO LEAVE ON JUNE 23 '.
Please explain what timescale ' WEEKS AND MONTHS AFTER A VOTE TO LEAVE ON JUNE 23 ' is supposed to mean ?
Of course, at the time no-one expected the delay to invoking Article 50 to be as long as it has been, so the timescales are extended; after all, we haven't even started the process yet. It's also true that most economists and other observers (including me) expected the mere fact of the uncertainty produced by the referendum result to have a bigger effect than it did. The reasons for that are twofold, and quite interesting. The first reason is that, contrary to expectations, consumers kept on spending, rather than drawing in their horns straight away. That's a bit of a surprise, but not a big deal really; consumer spending is very fickle, and the signs are that the expected slowdown is now beginning. The second reason is that business investment didn't slow down as much as expected. But that's now happening.
Overall, the effect is slower than expected. But we're very, very far from being able to say the forecasts were wrong overall. You need to wait until the end of 2019 to get the first preliminary data on that.
If you tell me what the deal with our EU friends is going to be, I could make an updated stab at guessing how the economy will react. But you can't, for the very good reason that our EU friends haven't got a clue themselves.
Me too - I certainly didn't expect the stock markets to rise to new record levels. Not that I complaining though.
But that's quite a contrast to how specific the predictions Cameron and Osborne gave in their Telegraph article were.
And that's the problem these days when you start making precise predictions for your own purposes - you'll get them quoted back at you.
Anyway, its time to call it a night. So a good weekend to you RN.

I was under the impression that SeanT already did a lot of charitable work...helping the poor young deluded female Corbynista's of London...taking them into his humble abode, wining and dining them, trips to sunnier climes. etc etc etc.NickPalmer said:
What about a specific charitable project, to diversify your life as well as your assets? Labour were about 10% ahead in the opinion polls at the time of the previous local election in 2013 for the seats being contested this year. They're now about 15% behind, so they could be heading for very heavy losses. They only hold two county councils at present, in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. (Excludes Durham which is a unitary authority).0

Interesting comparison to 2016.
I've just had dinner with 10 friends/colleagues/wives - the same people and resturant as last year - the book fair calendar is pretty predictable.
Last year there was heated discussion of the referendum and various positions.
Tonight - nothing. Blair was scoffed at before we even entered the restaurant.
Remainers who think they are biding their time are stuck in June 22nd Groundhog day with Meeks.

True. Larger donation in return for appropriate very-charitable activity :-)FrancisUrquhart said:
I was under the impression that SeanT already did a lot of charitable work...helping the poor young deluded female Corbynista's of London...taking them into his humble abode, wining and dining them, trips to sunnier climes. etc etc etc.NickPalmer said:
What about a specific charitable project, to diversify your life as well as your assets? Something you know about - perhaps a Sean Thomas Writing Fellowship - you'd invite people to send you a sample chapter of a thriller, and give the best 10 10 hours each of advice. Or offer these people https://www.addictionhelper.com/rehab/charity-rehab/ a series of unpaid talks for recovering addicts on how to make it stick and what worked for you?SeanT said:
I am giving more to charity. Rich liberal guilt beckons. It's probably inevitable.
More seriously, what about donatnig or loaning capital to a local or relevant Credit Union.
I am currently planning a donation or long term loan of capital to a local Credit Union after a successful project.
The point is that 10k to a credit union enables them to make loans of up to 40x that amount (depending on the size of the CU) and can have a significant impact on the capacity of the Union.
There are different methods - a donation is possible, or a long term loan or share investment. You may or may not get as small return depending on what you agree.
CUs tend to have limited capital - our County Wide CU only has a couple of million for example - so £100k say would be a major boost.
I like that it encourages people to stand on their own feet, learn good money habits, and have the setup in place that they can go to a reputable relatively low lender rather than a doorstep lender when financial upset occurs.0 -

And pb is often very good in these situations.0 -
I could be clever-clever (well, it's my default state, but that's not important right now) and point out that the Soviets invaded Poland in 17 September 1939, but it wouldn't make my point. My point is that the invasion of Iraq (at least the UK component of it) was - strictly speaking - legal. Not being specifically authorised by the UN does not make a UK war illegaljustin124 said:

what's really interesting in that Emmbrook result is when you compare it to 2016 (Wokingham elects in thirds) - Lib Dems 1222 Cons 1235 has become Lib Dems 1575 and Cons 879.
Campaign fought on local issues, including development, roads, school funding and the local Tories being a bunch of unpleasant greedy people who are fighting like rats in a sack.

Fascinating.AndyJS said:Labour were about 10% ahead in the opinion polls at the time of the previous local election in 2013 for the seats being contested this year. They're now about 15% behind, so they could be heading for very heavy losses. They only hold two county councils at present, in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. (Excludes Durham which is a unitary authority).
Worth noting that in the 2013 local elections themselves, Labour managed only a three-point lead over the Tories (29%-26%) according to Rallings and Thrasher's NEV calculation.
That set of locals was UKIP's high-water mark, 22%.

If that's the case then the locals matched the Westminster VI polls quite closely, in terms of the Lab lead over Con, but with Others including UKIP and Independents presumably squeezing them both in terms of vote share obtained.justin124 said:

I have to eat a big piece of humble pie here - I was wrong in my comments re- May 2013. I misread the polling tables and was actually viewing May 2014. Apologies to AndyJS who is basically correct in his assertion. In the first week of May 2013 the Labour lead was in the range of 6 to 11%. Labour significantly underperformed its poll ratings that year.0
-
We all make mistakes :-)
Of course Westminster VI asks about GE not locals, but it's fun to compare figures.
If Labour underperform their polls by a similar amount they're in big trouble in May!
Last year's NEVs were 33 Lab, 32 Con, 14 LD, 12 UKIP, 9 Others.0 -
The Westminster polls in late April 2016 were all over the place:
YouGov: Lab +3
BMG: Con +1
Opinium: Con +80 -
