I did meet a bloke called Hank Wank at a conference in the US once. Like Trump he was oblivious to his surname's real meaning.

I just got very lucky when I bought in 2013. Ended up buying a share of freehold which is pretty rare for flats in the area. We also invested in building out the attic which was undeveloped when I bought it which added significant value. The area also got a huge amount of uplift over the last three years.Sandpit said:

I got pretty much the same advice when my gf and I decided to move in together, my mum said don't waste money on renting and paying off someone else's mortgage. I basically spent every last pound I had, overstretched myself, lied to the bank a bit and got a huge mortgage at a barely affordable rate. But in the end it has worked out for me better than I could have ever imagined. I think Asians all have an aversion to renting, for good reason.TheScreamingEagles said:

Essentially it was just luck. I think I'm selling at the very top of the market for the area and I'm selling this share of freehold, rather than a lease which means it's in higher demand.
When I moved up north and sold the place in 2006 I timed it right.0 -
I agree old Top Gear was felling tired too often. There were too many episodes that felt forced and phoned in. But then we got new Top Gear and it was f##king horrendous, even the worst episodes of old Top Gear was stellar in comparison.
Perhaps Clarkson lamping the producer was the best for him and the audiences. By all accounts his life was a mess and the shows weren't up to the high standards.
The BBC probably best to pack Top Gear (as is) in, it just looks like a piss poor imitation now. The two blokes on the spin off show was decent doing the more motoring focused stuff though.0 -
Chucking money at will get them somewhere, but at what cost? Part of the charm of Top Gear was their low budget ingenuity. Keeping that will be tough, but not impossible.TheScreamingEagles said:

There is no DVB-T standard for 4K yet, 4k Blu-ray uses HEVC at 100Mbps, terrestrial 4k would need at least 30-40Mbps for live TV, 25-30Mbps for pre-recorded content.JosiasJessop said:

That has become the defence for everything now. The BBC could just sack the whole bloody diversity division and invest in technology. Though I think their biggest problem is that there is no DVB-T standard for 4K. They should begin broadcasting 4K on Sky, iPlayer and Freesat as soon as possible. Even just a BBC 4K channel which only turns on for 4K simulcasts where possible (Planet Earth 2, The Crown when it comes to the BBC in a couple of years).Jonathan said:

The problem is not just the cost of the bloat, it is like turning the titanic. It took them 2 years to decide to get rid of BBC3, then not get rid really and spend money on a new logo.MaxPB said:

£100 million wasted on a digital media system, they kept pumping money into it despite it being a disaster and being told they could just buy this tech off the shelf far far cheaper.
The relocation to Salford, the running multiple news teams that do the same job, the same for sports reporting (although I have noticed they are getting better at that, making presenters do stuff across multiple channels / stations).
The likes of Sky will cut a channel in a heartbeat if it isn't working. If you do the presenting on Sky Sports say the cricket, you have to do the promo, the intro, the review show, the Sky Sports News bits, messing with the tech...0 -

Buying big fuck off TVs, as my friend put it, is one of my indulgences.
I'd rather wait a few days to watch it on my TV than watch it straight away.

Though I imagine that bandwidth for 4k on terrestrial transmission would suck up the data available on the multiplexes. I'm also unsure if there have been broadcast standards defined for it yet (though I've been out of that part of the industry for yonks, and I've not been following it).
No reason they couldn't deliver on iPlayer via cable, though.
Now when 4K came to the U.K. they are well behind Sky, Netflix, Amazon, and BT.
£100 million wasted on a digital media system, they kept pumping money into it despite it being a disaster and being told they could just buy this tech off the shelf far far cheaper.
The likes of Sky will cut a channel in a heartbeat if it isn't working.0 -

Good Evening all. I've been otherwise engaged.
But funnily I had a bet on Fillon, placed yesterday, so I have a smile on my face.
Thats to in a row I've won. First trump, now Fillon. Who's next?0 -

The problem isn't and has never been the tech teams or even the production teams. It's the dead hand of management that chokes everything creative at the BBC. How does HBO produce world class TV on less than half the annual budget? How does Netflix commission the best global shows? How does Amazon TV end up being able to fund tentpoles like TGT?JosiasJessop said:

They all run a massively tight ship. The BBC could dump all of their daytime shit and just show repeats of older shows instead and invest the savings in top end drama and documentaries like Netflix.0 -

But it's entirely logical that between a convicted fraudster and a proven failure the French went for the 3rd option.0 -

My wife did better on the horses than me at Ascot yesterday, by a country mile. Picked three straight winners in a row, awing some serious punters next to her equipped with the racing post in the process, and won a very tidy chunk that payed for a delicious 3-course Sunday lunch with wine at a gastro pub today.

The scope of Netflix, HBO and Amazon video is just different to the BBC. Netflix doesn't run a local radio station in the Western Isles or a Burmese language News operation.MaxPB said:
