Crick is acting as judge, jury and executor on this story, which he then prefaces with "some experts might say that..." as 100% they have broken the rules. But by that statement, he is at the same time acknowledging that it is debatable.
Seems to me that all parties have ways to stretch the elastic to the limit in regards to these funding caps, and the Tories happened to have a particularly well organized set of 4 "battle buses" of young activists this time around.0 -

The PGI status that Cameron refers to, has actually caused the loss of jobs in the UK.
As an example, Pork Farms were forced to shut down their pie making operations in Wiltshire before the law came into effect, with the loss of 400 jobs. For the town of Trowbridge, this was the equivalent of losing their steel industry. I don't recollect the government stepping in to help.

From this morning:
Big assumption that the deficit will be revised down.DavidL said:Treasury forecast was £74.5bn and the BBC (in a move clearly designed to give Another Richard a heart attack and thus weaken the Leave cause) are reporting it as the first time that Osborne has missed his forecast. Ultimately I think it is very unlikely he will because £500m is a very small revisal on such large numbers.
The 2014/15 deficit was initially reported as £87bn:
http://web.ons.gov.uk/ons/dcp171778_402118.pdf
It has subsequently been revised upwards to £92bn:
https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/governmentpublicsectorandtaxes/publicsectorfinance/timeseries/dzls
Likewise the 2013/14 deficit has been increased from £98bn to £103bn during the last year.
Anyway here is the present comparison of Osborne's borrowing prediction:
Predicted
2010/11 £149bn
2011/12 £116bn
2012/13 £89bn
2013/14 £60bn
2014/15 £37bn
2015/16 £20bn
Total £471bn
Actual
2010/11 £137bn
2011/12 £116bn
2012/13 £121bn
2013/14 £103bn
2014/15 £92bn
2015/16 £74bn
Total £643bn
An overall overborrow of £172bn.

Agreed and this so called democratic process just isn't. The original problem was with the number of countries involved and a veto system nothing tended to get done. If it ever was it the outcome took years to achieve displeased most participants , ended up meaningless and more often than not was what the French wanted in the first place.LucyJones said:

The Ports Directive to name but one, which is going to shaft our container ports and has carefully been held back until after the referendum.

So much for having a "say" in the rules.
So they introduce QMV to make the system easier but it's just as bad but in the opposite direction. I suspect It is the QMV that will do for us in the long run or more likely the short term because when the onslaught starts and it really will, QMV will result in such a massive schism in the dealings with Europe we leave by default anyway along with a handful of others.0 -
another_richard, thanks for the scale of Osborne and Treasury depts excess borrowing over what they said they would achieve. This excess of £172bn, so far, is equivalent to the £6,000 per household that Osborne and the Treasury warned us we would get poorer exiting the EC.
Therefore Osborne has already caused us as much of a financial hit that he said the Brexit would cause us in 2030. Except Osborne has only taken 6 years to achieve that. So why have we not had the End of Days etc with this massive loss per household of £6,000?0 -
Can't even buy a decent vacuum cleaner these days without EU meddling and by the way the EU rules for the standard sizes for car parking spaces result in a multitude of dents in my doors.Richard_Tyndall said:
I am sure the good people of Stilton will also be pleased given that they are currently banned from naming their cheese after the village it originated from due to EU rules.watford30 said:The PGI status that Cameron refers to, has actually caused the loss of jobs in the UK.

The £6,000 per household is a FACT and not a Treasury guesstimate supported by the LSE. The fact is Osborne and his Treasury department have failed to meet their own targets by £172bn and added £6,000 of debt to each household more than they promised.TCPoliticalBetting said:another_richard, thanks for the scale of Osborne and Treasury depts excess borrowing over what they said they would achieve. John Biffen understood what QMV would lead to 30 years ago. But people were too stupid to see it.0 -
Well, yes. And when those countries all have differing interests and priorities, then it is difficult, if not impossible, to settle on policies that will be beneficial to all. The size and nature of the EU means that we will increasingly see decisions made will which have an adverse impact on the UK's interests and about which we can do nothing.RobD said:
I guess that's how democracy works when you are part of a union with many other countries.LucyJones said:

Amongst other things, tis an example of a huge "West Lothian Question": Why are landlocked countries like Austria allowed to vote to put legislation in place which will harm the UK's ports?

In the meantime, for Shakespeare day, some thoughts penned the other day on seeing the exhibition at the British Library:
Entombed within a court of whispered sounds
The evidence of genius on display
Of beauteous language, vivid and profound
Pre-eminent, as sun commands the day
Now tested through the ages old and new
As empires, wealth and power rise and fall
But words and drama are forever true
And character eternal, one and all
Yet printed words can only be a start
For action can alone bring them alive
The script is bones awaiting actors’ heart
The stage and screen its habitat to thrive
A reverence undue for written page
Betrays his Will that all the world’s a stage0 -

Hope that's OK with Barrack (and the Posh boys now supposedly running the country and who have never done a days work in their lives) ?0 -
