Ipsos-MORI: Starmer and BoJo level on who’d make most capable PM – politicalbetting.com
In what is the first time Starmer has been level in any poll when compared with Johnson the two are level pegging on who would make the most capable PM. The change is more down to Johnson’s ratings dropping sharply than Starmer’s moving up.
Compared to most western European countries, Britain is a "low trust" society. Although the situation isn't anywhere near as bad as it is the United States.
"An MP has been accused of threatening to use acid against a woman she believed to be in a relationship with her partner, a court has heard.
Claudia Webbe, 56, allegedly became “obsessed” with Michelle Merritt due to her friendship with the Leicester East MP’s partner, Lester Thomas.
Webbe also threatened to reveal naked photographs and videos she supposedly had of Merritt to her family, Westminster magistrates court heard on Monday.
Webbe, who was elected as a Labour MP but has since had the whip withdrawn, denies the charge."
I was told today by the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association that an estimated 25-30% of its members haven’t been able to work today due to fuel shortages.
If everyone who didn’t *need* petrol today, didn’t try to buy it today, there wouldn’t be a problem.
There is only a ‘crisis’ because the media arsonists are shouting fire in the theatre.
Would you recommend a supine media that is told not to report that there are tanker and lorry driver shortages? Whether we like it or not, it is a story, as is the response of government.
This is a really tricky issue. On Friday 5Live kept leading on the story 'A few BP garages have run out, but there is no need to panic buy'. This triggered the panic buying, and then once it started, as others have said, it becomes like the prisoners dilemna. Apparently the situation of some empty garages has not suddenly started but has been going on for a while, and there is a strong suggestion that someone has leaked this story for a reason i.e. the distribution companies want the government to relent and give visa to get cheaper drivers than investing in UK training.
5Live will say that they repeatedly said there is no need to panic buy, but it was too late by then. Herds act as herds.
The ones I condemn are the selfish twunks who not only filled their vehicles, but also jerry cans (one I've heard filled three!) and are in fact breaking the law transporting them in their vehicles and storing it at home.

Will the media continue to interview iSAGE peeps every day about the awful catastrophe that is just days away?
Yup, Starmer and Labour are distinctly underwhelming. On the other hand, there's also this; Does the Conservative Government deserve to be re-elected? Agree: 32%, Disagree 46%
Unfortunately, there isn't a historical series for this one, but it doesn't point to a joyful election campaign when the time comes.
The thing that comes through for me in that letter is his mentality that party politics is all about class war rather than a matter of competing ideologies, principles and values.
Henrik @br_nning 1h Lisa Nandy has told a fringe meeting that Labour should take heart from German election result. But there is one big difference here: SDP is pro EU. Labour voted for Johnson's deal. Two very different political parties.
Also, not sure if aiming for 25.7% of the vote isn't a little unambitious.

I think it is generally a poor sign if people are relying on results under a different voting system, in a different country, with parties that are not perfect analogues for UK parties, to take heart.

Looking to replicate their journey in Scotland nationally clearly.

It doesn't exactly project confidence to me.
I could point her to a recent result even closer to home where a social democratic, left of centre party got 47% of the vote, I don't think she'd take much heart from that though.
Alastair McLellan @HSJEditor BREAKING: Social distancing rules in hospitals changed so that patients can be cared for 1 metre, rather than 2 metres apart. Will make a BIG difference to the number of beds that can be used (assuming hospitals have the staff of course)

That move alone will allow for a reduction in the waiting lists.
Just went to check the Labour manifesto to see if this guy was right Starmer was not honouring a pledge made in it (or during his leadership campaign - maybe he said he supported it then, but his 10 generic pledges don't as far as I can see), since he refers to this issue as the 'latest of many', and the Labour site has under 'additional manifestoes':
Youth Manifesto Charter for the Arts Race and Faith Manifesto Environment Manifesto Manifesto for Disabled People Workers' rights manifesto Regional manifestoes Housing manifesto
The interesting thing is that The Sun are going to the trouble of covering an opinion poll in a rival paper. And not the internals (many of which are still pretty grisly for the opposition) but the figure that's bad for BoJo. And The Sun, more than any other paper, has never got poor by disagreeing with its target audience.
Do don't PR says an politics lecturer, as FPTP so advantages Labour, always getting more seats than their vote represents, it would be a disaster to give it up:
What I read Ms Nandy as saying was that not long ago the SDP looked like coming 3rd or even 4th in the German elections. Now they're almost certainly going to lead the Government.
But you'd expect the Tory fan club on here to snipe.
And no, I'm not a Labour member. Or even a regular Labour voter.

It also underlines that what with Brexit and the pandemic the suggestion of impending shortages has credibility for many people. If the suggestions had no basis and were simply wild rumour or fake news, few would react to them.
Alternatively it underlines the herd mentality that can kick in and how easy it is to generate mass hysteria.
The media could get people panicking about the lack of phalanges if they thought it'd lead to clicks.
It is. The Sun story is about the preferred PM rating, as is the header.
@Scott_P must be in quite a state after the surprising RedfieldWilton poll tonight with Boris with a 6 point lead and -6, with Starmer -13, and Rishi +13

The biggest panicker is HMG, having put in place an otiose visa relaxation which has holed its controlled immigation strategy below the water line and which even in principle could only be effective long after the 'panic' has blown over.
That last stat ("Meanwhile 45% say they ‘like the Labour Party’ (unchanged) whereas just 36% say they ‘like the Conservative Party’ (down 5 points from March ’21))" is interesting. Suggests to me that there's more natural support for Labour than Tories. It's getting it that's the difficult part.
Oh and for what it's worth, the ASDA petrol station I drove by a few minutes ago (in lovely Swansea) seemed to be operating normally. I was tempted to fill up, but I had 3/4 of a tank so decided to be responsible
Joint statement by the fuel industry there is plenty of fuel at the refineries and terminals, and we expect demand will return to normal in the coming days

So what they are saying is we should go to the refinery to fill up?
Alastair McLellan @HSJEditor BREAKING: Social distancing rules in hospitals changed so that patients can be cared for 1 metre, rather than 2 metres apart. Will make a BIG difference to the number of beds that can be used (assuming hospitals have the staff of course)
Astonished that they are still at 2m tbh. I know they have a duty of care etc, but that should be balanced by capacity issues too, surely?

But the number of visas offered is tiny. I thought it was more of a token gesture than anything.
Highly critical resignation letter by Andy Mcdonald of Starmer according to Sky
Yes, it's huge. Mcdonald has effectively attempted to torpedo Sir Keir's very leadership. I can't see Sir Keir recovering from this. This conference was supposed to be his great fightback and the Labour Left has destroyed it.

I'm not sure, I think HMG has played a blinder on that one; I was annoyed at the news there was going to be a relaxation just because 'pay more' should be the solution. But then the details came out of the relaxation and its so meaningless that they've basically done nothing while giving the impression of acting - which is a good thing.
5000 three month only visas is still controlled - and the companies that have gotten away with not paying a decent wage for so long now face no alternative but to offer a decent wage as these visas aren't going to be the solution. But for the people screaming that immigration was needed to solve this - they can 'take the win' of having got a relaxation, even if the win is entirely phyrric.
And now that the word is out that there's over a million qualified HGV drivers in this country . . . and 5000 visa offers . . . there's no excuse anymore not to fix this by offering a fair market rate for drivers, which is what the solution should have always been.

Management by priorities, not trade-offs. Lexicographic objective function.

The issue probably isn't a fair market rate for drivers, the issue is making the industry a nice enough place to work that people want to enter / return to the sector.
Pay really won't fix the reasons most people have left it...

Hard not to laugh right now!
Boris Gross Positive 39 Net -12
Sir Keir Gross Positive 25 Net -25
Boris lead +14 and +13
Boris second only to Blair in terms on net satisfaction w the PM at this stage of his Premiership
Tories second only to 97 Blair in terms of net satisfaction with the government
Sir Keir's net satisfaction only better than Foot, Corbyn and IDS at this stage of his time as LotO
Only once since Blair has a Labour opposition been thought of as less ready to form a government

It's a lovely idea but that has to be a long term aspiration, not a plan for a 2023 election.
