I wouldn't mind, but nothing will come of it. I'll pay the licence fee next January as normal and the likes of Hall will continue to live the Life of Riley on our money.

Interesting that @RoryStewartUK is so strongly opposed to tariff and quota free trade with Australia. I’d assumed that it would be possible to make it conditional on high animal welfare standards and subsidise environmental stewardship by domestic producers. Maybe that’s naive.

Many thanks to Mike and all pb for your kind wishes.I’m back in Hersham Towers since yesterday….and as this is ‘politics’, everyone at NHS St Peters and I mean everyone was simple fantastic in the care, kindness and effectiveness. And I owe so very much to the dog-walker (who I know) for the CRP. I’ve also been consoling myself by reading all the pb threads.

It all happened so suddenly, didn’t feel a thing and can’t even remember the few days before the incident - it’s all a complete blank.

Anyway the problem was essential an arrhythmia which should be completely solved by my now having an ICD. Feeling generally fine but knackered. But we’ll start councilling again gradually.

    Cheers to y’all. John

    COVID Summary

Cases are up and it looks like we are seeing some more admissions. However, admissions are up only in 18-64 group (sadly no finer detail on the groups) - older groups continue to fall.

    image

Similarly, with cases, in the 0-44 groups there is a rise - with falls for the older groups

I know I'm rather late to the party on this, but there do appear to be encouraging signs that the Indian variant is turning into a bit of a damp squib. Seems like there's a mixed bag, but no dramatic increases in case rate, in London; West Midlands very low and still declining in most council areas; and no sign of serious problems even in previously very stubborn hotspots like Luton and Leicester. This is not the sort of pattern we saw with the rampaging Kent Plague.

If it's a very localised problem that's affecting specific areas where there's been heavy seeding of the variant from India and lower than average uptake of the vaccines, then there's no particular reason to suppose that it will become a serious issue for most of us (and resources, in the form of blanket testing and vaccinations, can be used to crush the disease in the relevant places.)

If this indeed transpires to be the case then one would expect phase 4 to go ahead in England in a month's time. If the Government is going to foot-drag then it will require a very convincing explanation for so doing.

The other issue is the age groups - indicating vaccination status. There is a rise in cases - among the unvaccinated age groups and a fall elsewhere.

Similarly, for hospitalisations, there is a small rise in the unvaccinated age groups, but a fall in the vaccinated.

    See graphs below...

Yes, Harrow is the key location for this, if cases rise out of control in Harrow then it's a sign we're in trouble. If not (and they aren't) then we're fine. People who have refused the vaccine are really not going to stop the unlockdown. It's not a consideration.

I assume from all the warnings I've had on this that people know that a number of this year's entries are painfully "right-on" ?

I usually watch it just to laugh at Europeans, or watch very very carefully when it's acts like the Polish washerwomen.

If you would like to ensure Ladbrokes make money on this year's #Eurovision , please especially avoid voting for the following countries:

    🇬🇧 UK
    🇨🇾 Cyprus
    🇮🇸 Iceland
    🇸🇲 San Marino

It's really uncertain this year, betting is a bit tricky.

Portugal is flying under the radar a bit and may get top 10. Also, Serbia is getting much more impressive views/listens than their betting odds reflect. UK, Spain and Germany are good candidates for bottom 5.

Winner? Probably Italy, but Switzerland and France in with a shout too.

Does anyone have any good Eurovision tips for tonight?

It's really uncertain this year, betting is a bit tricky.

Portugal is flying under the radar a bit and may get top 10. Also, Serbia is getting much more impressive views/listens than their betting odds reflect. UK, Spain and Germany are good candidates for bottom 5.

Winner? Probably Italy, but Switzerland and France in with a shout too.
    Thanks for the tips.

    Smallish stakes;

    Top ten;
    Portugal @2.02
    Serbia@5.5
    Belgium @14

And a few spare quid on ^ to win at silly long odds.

To any lurkers, don’t follow me in. I have an absolutely crap record betting on Eurovision!

I can't believe that this Diana and Bashir nonsense is still headline news. 4 bloody days of it.

The media love nothing more than to talk about themselves...
It's like when novelists start writing about novelists writing novels, or even worse, having difficulty writing novels.

When did Italy start competing in it again? I thought they quit years ago? Do they actually have any voting history?

There's a debunker called Mick West who quite plausibly shows that one of the crucial "alien" videos is actually..... a goose

    Literally, a goose

It will be incredible if it turns out the American political and journalistic elite, up to and including President Obama, got all excited, and created the headlines of the century, by misidentifying a goose as ET

No it wouldn't be. We've been going around this loop for at least fifty years, probably longer. Since film was invented.

Can’t fault the Guardian for putting in a Sterling shift to try to convince us that the India variant is going to kill us all. Day after day, every one a new angle.

This evening - “Govt coverup to justify ending of masks in schools”.

No, it would be incredible: because we have two ex directors of the CIA, sundry intelligence folk, senior senators, Barack Obama, veteran fighter pilots, and many others, all weighing in and giving credibility to this story - or flat out saying it is ET

The idea that all these folk have been deceived by a pilot misidentifying a goose is almost as incredible as aliens popping by for tea

Either way, we get something incredible happening! That's good. Incredible things are fun

The Guardian are zero covid in school zealots, but will be the first to moan about how closure of schools is widening the gap for the poorest / BAME kids.

The debunkers also have Normalcy Bias, of course. And they have careers and reputations to nurture. They are vested in proving these things can be prosaically explained. Indeed, they HAVE to say that.

I think if there was live HD footage of the aliens landing on Regent's Park to play their intergalactic love-bassoons, they'd find a way to debunk it as CGI, with extra Deep Fakery

This story is so bizarre it is hard to stay sane as you plot it out. It's like trying to prove or disprove God. You can't, really

The story appears to be that Number 10 leant on PHE not to publish data on the Indian variant in schools. Shades of sexing up the WMDs dossier, also at Number 10's behest?

That's really gonna help Palestine, isn't it? Smashing up a fancy car in London. Did the driver look Jewish?

I'm not sure a TVR can be described as "fancy".
