So the government is considering using force majeure as a means to not implement the NI protocol . So basically an act of God ! More disgraceful behaviour from this cesspit administration. And in other news the U.K. can’t align its food standards to help solve many border issues because it wants to lower them when it decides to throw farmers under a bus when it makes a trade deal with Australia.
It is remarkable, though not surprising, that in this era of "food miles" and in a country that can't currently feed itself without imports, the Insane Clown posse are prepared to destroy local sheep farming in favour of importing them from the farthest point on the planet.
Food miles are, if you'll excuse my language, utter bullshit. The amount of oil needed to shift a giant refrigerated ship from NZ to the UK is shockingly little. You'll almost certainly use more (or a leg of lamb basis) bringing it from the store to your home.
In quaint old England some of us actually walk to the shops and back not using any oil. Imagine that!
A couple of years back I took a business trip to Atlanta. My US clients were shocked that I willingly walked the less-than twenty minutes from my hotel to the conference centre every day. Funny old world.
I had exactly the same experience in Atlanta, but with the door staff at the hotel who at one point seemed to be close to banning me from walking out for my own safety. Needless to say I had a couple of very pleasant walks, though pavement provision isn't the greatest in Southern US cities.
I was staying with a friend in Oak Park, Illinois one time and said, given that it was a nice day, that I would like to walk up to Michigan Avenue. I was told in no uncertain terms that if I did that I would be killed well before I reached my destination.
Having traveled the reverse route a couple of times by the Chicago "L" I can believe them - the areas in between are definitely not the nicest..
That said, I was told the same thing about various DC neighbourhoods. I don't know which, mind.
But I happened to get lost and wandered into an area I was told not to go to, downtown. Frankly, everyone was nicer to me there than elsewhere....
Yes, while personal safety can be an issue in the USA, there is a strong sense of racial bias even amongst Liberals about the bad parts of town.
Chris Arnarde writes and photos very eloquently on the subject.
My best walking incident in the US was arriving storm-delayed at College Station airport at 23:20. I walked out to the taxi rank to see the last taxi pull away just as the facility manager switched off the lights and locked the door to the airport. I asked him how long until the next taxi might be expected, he said there would be no more. So I called my hotel and asked the receptionist how I could walk from the airport to the hotel. It was well less than a mile as the crow flies. She told me I couldn't. Period.
I told her the situation with the taxis, she said "Hold on" 10 minutes later she showed up in her own car to pick me up.
Edit: I should add that, once at the hotel, she asked for my phone. She uploaded Uber onto it and told me that was how people got around in College Station.
That's a very American. Contrasts. Years ago, visiting home in an old Chicago suburb, I looked up a past girlfriend who lived in the city. Following my Dad's out of date advice I had to walk a mile or so through a rough section of town. It was winter and about 10 pm. The buildings were dark mostly and the street deserted. I saw no one the whole way. When I got to the "el" station and on the (empty) train the lone armed guard looked definitely nervous. But nothing happened. Truly it was very cold. Generally, I think bad people are lazy, unless they're on something artificial. That theory/hope has seen me survive to old age,
Comparison of Sir Keir's first 153 Leadership Approval Ratings with those of Ed Miliband
The darker colours are their Gross Positives and the lighter shades Net Satisfaction
The problem for Sir Keir is that Boris is getting mid to high 40s in GPs, and around +7 average net satisfaction, whilst Cameron was getting mid 30s GP and NS of -20s. So although maybe doing slightly better than Ed (not actually sure of that) relative to the PM he is facing he is doing much, much worse

I mock-examined a PhD thesis looking at health/environmental impact of 'active travel' (walking, cycling) which asserted (with evidence - I looked into this part in some detail as I found it hard to believe) that the CO2 emissions from a highly efficient car were lower than walking.

No, it’s not.
Yes, it is.
A private foundation offered a service to a private individual for which it was paid the rack rate.
I get you might think it’s unfair. But it’s not an insult
Let's look at things that are "unfair", and adapt the "insult" sentence and see how silly it looks:
I think it is unfair that some people eat in an expensive restaurant, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
I think it is unfair that some people take holidays in the Maldives, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
I think it is unfair that some drive expensive cars, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
I think it is unfair that some people live in their own houses, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
I think it is unfair that some people buy expensive clothes, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
I think it is unfair that some people go to university, and the fact that they do is an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not etc.
OK, so probably all who post on here (with the exception of the odd Corbynite nutter), are OK with this unfairness, but probably don't think it is "an insult to the millions of working class kids who do not". But if a parent chooses to privately educate their kids that is somehow different. Illogical.
That is a mischaracterisation.
It is unfair that a person of hereditary power uses their birth right to push their progeny into places they are so seemingly unfit for. It is unfair to those without said privilege that this is possible.
I'm not arguing the fairness of financial inequality, yet....
I am not sure it is a mischaracterisation . I have come across people who will sneer at people choosing to pay for their children's education while very carefully using their wealth to buy a house in a good catchment, and boasting about the best restaurants, holidays etc. Private education is a choice, like buying an expensive holiday, which is dependent on your disposable cash/income. As for the use of influence, everyone does it for their kids and grandchildren if they can -even the Labour Party seems to like the hereditary principle eg. the Benns, the Sawars and many others!) To suggest old Queeny shouldn't seems a bit unfair.
I'm not talking about financial disparity although of course that is constituent in inherited power.
I'm not sure the argument of everyone does it so its is acceptable washes. Do you think that those without inherited power to exploit don't suffer because I know they do and it is unfair.
I mean Michael Young has hugely influenced my thinking but his actions regarding Toby's further education brought the man down in my estimations. (not that he cares )
It was a light hearted way of pointing out that all (or at least most) people will seek to get the best outcomes for their children. "Inherited power" comes in many forms. In a fair(ish) democratic(ish) society it should of course (IMO) be tempered, but wealth is only one form. What about intelligence? Is it unfair that someone such as yourself has the intelligence to think about such things while many others are only interested in Love Island? Do they care? Possibly not. We should continue to push for equality of opportunity, and the best way (again IMO) to do that is to quit fretting about how people spend money on their kids.
I think we will just have to disagree on the influence side of things.
I will add that if you do care about equality of opportunity than you should be fretting about how parents treat their children if only to judge any disparity between those educated by the state and those not.

That's a good story! There's a lot of luck in these things. In reality the probability of getting randomly murdered on a single walk anywhere is small, even places like Colombia. A friend lived in Belfast throughout the Troubles, and never even heard a bomb, let alone be injured by one, while I was a few doors down from a bomb that went off in Pall Mall. But clearly the odds do vary, and the question is how cautious you want to be.
Your specific case, though, sounds less about safety than the sheer absence of sidewalks since the city fathers didn't envisage anyone not driving from the airport?
I did mention on here that there were rumours of this flying around at the time.
The Government’s bank suspended Matt Hancock’s team from making payments to PPE suppliers at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic over fears they were being taken in by fraudsters, the High Court has been told.
NatWest told the government payments over £5 million would have to be reviewed by their fraud team, over concerns about a lack of due diligence in huge contracts being handed out through the so-called “VIP lane”.
At least £1.7 billion worth of deals were struck through the “VIP lane” - some of which were for products which did not meet adequate standards for the NHS, according to a report by the Commons Public Accounts Committee.
The committee found DHSC had “wasted hundreds of millions of pounds on PPE which is of poor quality and cannot be used for the intended purpose.”
It's gone a bit unnoticed, but there is a curious difference between most EU countries and the UK going on right now.
Simply: despite being two to three months behind the UK, as far as vaccinations go, most EU countries are removing restrictions. Denmark, for example, will is going to remove almost all Covid restrictions from Friday. Only nightclubs will remain closed.
My gut is that the UK has been far too cautious in reopening, and has therefore thrown away a good part of the benefits from its successful vaccination programme.
However... given that most of the EU still has relatively high levels of Covid (typically 2-5x the UK on a per person basis), this is a gutsy call.
However (part two), this doesn't tell the whole story. Denmark tests more than 10% of its population each day, and has managed to be pretty successful at shielding the more vulnerable. This means there are remarkably few people in hospital with Covid in the whole country (just 166, of which only 31 are in intensive care).
Anyway: it's a good reason to be cautious about reopening the borders with the EU. But it's also going to be a great counterfactual: could we have reopened the economy earlier without seeing a spike in hospitalizations.
Alternatively, being between waves. Like Mohdi declaring victory because of his brilliance a few months back. And our own jab less lull between wave 1 and 2.
No one knows for sure.
I know something. I’m going out this week. I’ve got an e ticket. My bags packed. Sunglasses, sunscreen, fleece, waterproof. I didn’t exploit lull between 1 and 2 enough, I need to push it a bit more between waves 2 and 3, I know that. Wave 3 lock down could coincide with nice summer weather. 🙁

Hi @Leon The parallels with covid in early 2020 are startling. I saw the footage from Wuhan, I knew people in China for goodness sake. But I closed my brain off to it even as it directly affected my life in Asia, as did almost everyone on this website. It was only when Meeks and you really banged the drum that I woke up from my cognitive dissonance sometime in mid Feb about what was happening. Still early enough to make out like a bandit in the options market. But importantly, still early enough to mentally prepare myself for the pandemic and be in a position to support those around me with practical advice and psychological help, given the stunned shock for most people in late March and April.
Equally the signs for the unfolding UFO reveal were there if you were really looking since 2017. I had a bit of an AHA! moment last March but the pandemic took precedence. It was only when I belatedly listened to David Fravor in July last year that I realised something major was unfolding. I've been mentally preparing for it ever since, although I didn't write about it here because a) I knew no one would listen, and b) I assumed there was a D Notice in the UK, given the UK media silence. Since about January when the bill was passed by Congress, I've been doing my best to soften up those around me to what will be an unsettling new reality, with mixed success. That new reality could dawn really quite soon.
We've moved on so quickly from ex military personnel, to senior senators, ex CIA directors and NIDs... and now to an ex President. I have no f**** clue what more people want to wake up.
Even if Farage only got 21, I fancy it would be more than SKS, knighthood or not.
There were a lot of twitter accounts encouraging people to get free tickets and not turn up, so as to embarrass Farage
Yes, and Farage has very sensibly started charging $20 for his events from now on: it means that they'll get a real handle on the number of people who want to go.
That being said... I think Farage almost certainly overestimated his pull in the US. Simply, he's not that known: he doesn't get interviewed on Fox News, and he was just a guy who was a friend of Donald's.

We don't. But we'll soon find out.
My guess is that the opening up on the Continent will happen without hospitalizations going through the roof, and it will be clear that we could have moved faster to unlock.

Is this some huge conspiracy? Have I taken shrooms?
Sounds like a possible plot for a really crappy novel
There are enough of these videos showing exactly the same thing, a very small aircraft - white, silvery - flying at extraordinarily high speed - for me to suspect that Something Is Up
What they show is pixels moving across the screen, very fast. It’s an assumption that it’s a craft of any kind.
And yet extremely important people from Obama down, and including multiple retired Navy Chiefs CIA directors, US senators, etc, are taking this seriously (it seems), and admitting they have no idea what is going on with these UAPs
That's the big puzzle. I can understand that average dudes on PB will be weirdly credulous (or overly skeptical) but... Obama?

Off topic, why does Harry find the first amendment "baffling" ?
Because he's not very bright?
Because he has been convinced all his life that the UK press are a pack of uncontrolled snarling monsters out to exploit him and his family and he now finds that they are extremely controlled by our libel and other laws compared with the press in the US? A shattering of illusions.
If only he had a US wife who could have told him what the US Constitution says ........
He's an embarrassingly stupid man who has no real understanding of just how stupid he is.
As my mother said at the weekend; he got a B and a D at A level…and one of those was in art
Confirms Eton is overcharging parents?
Also, how easy must the entrance exam be? Or has Eton gone all Harrow and let in any kid of rich feckers?
Ludgrove and Eton both recommended he went to a different school. His grandmother (who appoints the Provost of Eton as her personal representative on the board and therefore has some sway) insisted. She wanted him close - this was shortly after Diana’s death - and she had him round to stay at her pad nearby most weekends
Connections eh.
How do we remove this unelected ruler?
It is an insult to millions of working class kids in the country who do not have these connections and cannot improve their lot in life.
No, it’s not.
Yes, it is.

They're all talking utter shit to you. Defending the indefensible, denying the undeniable. They're trad Tories. It goes with the territory. Private schools tickle their tonsils. Brains go to mush.
Good luck and chin chin.
I quite like a lot of your posts, I think you are moderately left and I am moderately right, so I often have more in common with you than many Tories on here. On this, though it is your brain that has turned to mush and you that are talking shit. Try reading my post and tell me that those on the left that do all the things I mention are not hypocrites for being so obsessed by those that like to buy their childrens' schooling? In fact many left leaning people I have met, particularly the metro types, are some of the biggest snobs I have ever encountered.
But your bracketing of buying educational privilege for your kids with buying a great steak at a top nosherie was just a nonsense. This was my ... beef.
Most MAGA-maniacs just assumed he was Benny Hill's love child. Possibly by PeeWee Herman?
Farage is even LESS know in USA than Ruby Wax; have never run into ANYONE on this side of the Atlantic (or the Pacific) who ever heard of her. But a few politico-nerd-obsessives (such as yours truly) HAVE heard of Nick.
But none I know of who'd pay $25 to hob-nob with him.
Heck, personally refused thirty years ago to pay that much to see Dr. Hunter S. Thompson! And still would even if he was still alive!!
And whatever you wanna say about NF - for good or ill - he's NOWHERE in same league as HST.
A spokesman for the company that booked Nigel Farage on a speaking tour for the US reports they have "miscalculated his popularity" after only 21 people turn up to the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott on Monday evening despite tickets being free.
"Tom Chivers @TomChivers · 5h this didn't happen, stop retweeting it, this is the guy who made up the "stupid Brexit-supporting family in France" story a couple of years ago, I know you all want it to be true but it's not"
It only takes one picture from the (actually happening) tour to disprove it.
Farage's Instagram feed from the tour has some pictures of him talking (and two pictures with him with someone also called Nigel Farage), but none of the crowds at his events.
True, but anyway
ALIENS
It really is incredible this isn't bigger news in the UK. People are scared of looking crazy?
Even the most parsimonious explanations for this kerfuffle are wild
1. US military and political elites are conspiring to fool and frighten the world (why?)
2. The same US elites have all gone mad or they have been duped (how??)
3. China has developed tiny hypersonic aircraft that can do 14,000 mph no problemo
In the clip I saw (from a fighter?) there was a light green triangle which was supposedly a UAP.
Except if you watched the clip there were similar triangles around it not referred to. They all looked like a reflection of something on the camera lens.
But here's a clue. There is a non-alien explanation for every one of the "sightings".
Former President of the USA Barack Obama disagrees with you
"Gadi Schwartz @GadiNBC Obama has entered the UFO chat. “We can’t explain how they moved... their trajectory...”"
We don't. But we'll soon find out.
My guess is that the opening up on the Continent will happen without hospitalizations going through the roof, and it will be clear that we could have moved faster to unlock.
We could have. We stopped having excess deaths months ago and we are only going back to July levels of restrictions yesterday. Farcically slow and it's pissed away months of first mover advantage we could have had economically.
And still zero covidiots wonder if we are not being cautious enough. Pathetic.

The majority will think it unfair.
The individual may be private but the institution they originate from is not. And I'm sure we are in opposition on this.
Why is it an insult? I get the perceived unfairness but I don’t get the personal insult
On topic it seems like leader positive support, ratings and don't know for opposition leaders should all be looked at together. Whilst the negative rating is helpful there are probably a hardcore of Tory and labour supporters who would always give a negative response no matter how well they are doing, and whilst Boris probably inspires more negativity it is less efficient to vote against something rather than for - one Vs many.

I have no clue what is happening and in that it seems I am joined by Obama, so that's OK
I overcame my normalcy bias early with Covid, I am trying to do that again, but without going mad. Aliens? Really?? Why are they here? Where from? Why do we get such crappy photos? What's the point in their watching us?
I also find it hard to believe that the biggest story since World War 2 (Covid) would be immediately followed by the biggest story in the history of the planet (aliens are here). All that in 18 months?
However, as I say, I can't find any wholly convincing non-alien explanation yet. Perhaps it is all a total head-fuck by the Americans to freak out the Chinese (as they assume hegemony) but that's an awful lot of people to conspire together, and an awful lot of sensible people risking the accusation of total insanity. Hmm
I also think some people are just scared of the alien hypothesis. It is super scary. It is meeting a deity

COVID idiots. For simply pointing out it does it’s business in waves?
Define what success from vaccination is? It’s pretty clear we are going to have to just get on with business at some point, and let the bodies pile up in the streets a bit for a while at least?
However, kicker for you of course, Each time someone says “it’s their own fault for turning down the vaccine when offered” it’s an extra stab of trident at some point isn’t it?
Is this some huge conspiracy? Have I taken shrooms?

I think the showrunners of our simulation got to the end of their source material, and just like Benioff and Weiss with Game of Thrones, they're flailing around trying to find a good way to resolve the series.

Its all a waste of life. 61children at the last count.
I've never been one to be so effected by news stories and I like to think I can understand a little of the nuance.... but so many children are being killed. Its just damn sad.

The problem is the leap to ‘it must be aliens’. All we are seeing is grainy footage of pixels. I keep being told there is way better evidence but it never comes out. There have always been odd events. Throughout history they would be described as angels or miracles etc. Now we call things we can’t explain aliens. It may be the case, but I am a long way from convinced, and I want it to be true. (Assuming benevolent aliens of course... don’t want the Borg, or Klingons etc)

Why not become a Tory MP?!
Apparently Trump recent donation drive, in the old small print unless you uncheck a box, the default isn't a one off donation, it is a recurring monthly donation, and they of course make it a pain in the arse to cancel.
Apparently quite a lot of the MAGA faithful got a quite a shock a few months later to find they had donated a lot more money than they thought.

That new reality could dawn really quite soon.
We've moved on so quickly from ex military personnel, to senior senators, ex CIA directors and NIDs... and now to an ex President. I have no f**** clue what more people want to wake up.
There’s a good chance it’s not just meeting a deity but our creator.
It really is fascinating “why now?”. Did Trump break precedent and push the ball down the hill and break open a debate on transparency that’s been going on a while? Or is there something about the activity which means the American establishment feels it HAS to get the narrative out now before... who knows what?
My wife tells me not to talk about it because she knows I’m right and it scares her. Half my social group is fully up to speed and onboard that we’re seeing the biggest story of mankind unfold. The other half think it’s mad. Amazing overlap with the people that were still making coughing jokes in March.
Yeah it is a bit cringey all the Trump stuff he did/does
Perhaps he is just skint though. A divorce to pay for, no day job anymore - gotta do what he's gotta do.
Why not become a Tory MP?!
Tories wouldn't have him. He's toxic to many and offers nothing now the Brexit vote has already been united.
You are right, Nick. There was an Interstate running between the hotel and the airport. Yes, technically there were ways a pedestrian could walk under the Interstate, but there were no sidewalks and fast moving cars.
Is this some huge conspiracy? Have I taken shrooms?
They're here to zap Prince Harry.
News of his bullshit has travelled far and wide and has even irritated the Xindi living on Epsilon-5.
Seems strange that you are quite relaxed about people spending money on luxuries but but don't like parents spending their own cash to improve their own children's education. You would rather stop parents doing their best for their children because others can't or won't do it for theirs. Sounds like envy to me. Why should a parent not decide to spend money on their kids rather than booze, gambling or sky TV.
This was my ... beef.
Yebbut, is it an ET type of alien, the Vulcans or a xenomorph?
That's what I want to know.
We're a backwater, relatively speaking. Any aliens are most likely to be the equivalent of some geek trying to collect the most obscure primitive civilizations visited in a galactic collecting hobby.

The individual may be private but the institution they originate from is not. And I'm sure we are in opposition on this.
Why is it an insult? I get the perceived unfairness but I don’t get the personal insult
I literally couldn't give a monkeys who goes to Eton or any other public school. I won't be able to afford to send my kids there so it is not even in my frame of reference. I can't see the obsession about paying for schools. We don't van Bentley's just because all I can afford is a second hand estate car.

Am probably missing something (as per usual) but how's what Barack Obama is quoted as saying, much different from what Dwight Eisenhower could have said, or did say? That USAF pilots and other have seen things in the Wild Blue Yonder (no political observation intended) that they and we cannot (yet) explain?
And that US govt is keeping an active watch in hopes of finding out what's what. For that reason AND in case it's some kind of threat, whether extraterrestrial, astronomic or earth-originated?
Is this news? Sounds like same basic thing I've been hearing & reading about since I was in school during the (Lyndon) Johnson administration.

That's one hardball attorney. Not heard the term 'short-bus people' before, does it refer to the type of transport such folk might need to get to various remedial and therapeutic facilities?
It's American. Most kids get taken to and from school in the big yellow school buses that everyone's familiar with, but if you go to a special needs school, there won't be so many kids going to your school from your area so you'll probably get picked up by a minibus-sized "short-bus".
That's one hardball attorney. Not heard the term 'short-bus people' before, does it refer to the type of transport such folk might need to get to various remedial and therapeutic facilities?
I’ve not heard the term “short bus people” specifically but the “short bus” is the school bus for pupils who need extra assistance ve the normal yellow bus

If that’s the video you posted earlier, he said no such thing. Just that they’d seen stuff they couldn’t explain.
Which is the start and finish of evidence for “technology”.
I don’t say it’s impossible, but so far the evidence is just some images. Nothing physical.
People keep saying this. But it’s not just some images is it. It’s multi point radar matching multiple eye witness, with video and infrared. And multiple incidents. And so we’re told by an ex US Cabinet member, sonar and satellite imagery.

Generally, the short bus is a smaller version of a regular school bus that carries mentally challenged students to school. On rare occasions, if your school board is a bunch of assholes (like mine), you will be forced to ride in a short bus for field trips if you class contains less than 18 students.
Pathetic.
All of these "scary" models being used to urge caution just seem to continually assume an almost limitless supply of victims to infect and make seriously ill. Which is just totally at odds with a country of enormously high levels of vaccination across vulnerable, and frankly, not very vulnerable groups. Which is just not realistic short of the vaccinations offering no protection and/or suddenly becoming dramatically more dangerous for younger people. There's just a massive wall of vaccinated people standing in the way of any even semi-serious outbreak doing anything other than fizzling out pretty rapidly.
Your criticisms are justified in the context of a world with no vaccines, but that is not this world now.

I don’t say it’s impossible, but so far the evidence is just some images. Nothing physical.
People keep saying this. But it’s not just some images is it. It’s multi point radar matching multiple eye witness, with video and infrared. And multiple incidents. And so we’re told by an ex US Cabinet member, sonar and satellite imagery.
Apparently. These are the better evidence that never gets published though. I’d also say throughout ufo history there have been multiple observer cases and cases of radar and visual contact etc etc. You may be right, and you certainly seem convinced, but I will wait to see all this great evidence.
You're saying we're some sort of Warhammer 40k figurines for some aliens?
Yes, something like that. Or someone who creates a blog to document their quest to visit every county top in the country.
Interesting and admirable, to an extent. Undoubtedly an achievement of sorts. But also deeply obsessed and a bit weird.
If it was anything like the Independence Day "we will consume all your resources" aliens it would be over already. So clearly we're just being visited by misfits with too much time on their hands. Or tentacles. Or whatever.
As to the future, I was musing on what the reaction of a Conservative activist would have been if, in the summer of 1979, you had told him or her the Party would win the next three General Elections and be in power until 1997.
Yebbut, is it an ET type of alien, the Vulcans or a xenomorph?

As a wise man once opined:

It might sound crazy but it’s worth considering that these objects/vehicles might be of intelligent non human terrestrial origin. It’s at least as plausible as them being interstellar or interdimensional.
This whole topic is nuts because once you get over the first hurdle that the phenomenon is a real one, it forces you to consider what they are and ask quite bananas questions. For this reason, most of the officials are only publicly saying “I don’t want to speculate on what they are but we know they’re not American and we’re pretty sure they’re not Russian or Chinese”.

I like this theory. An intergalactic @Sunil_Prasannan is ticking off the most obscure stops on his grand tour of the cosmic transit system, and a visit to Sol III carries serious bragging rights on Pangalacticbetting.com...
Anyone considered that the Biden administration might be quite keen to move on the news agenda at the moment. Having Obama appear on national news networks "not laughing" at UFO reports might be a decent way to do that...

Seattle Times ($) Congress demands records to investigate quality lapses at Boeing
Spurred by Boeing’s recent litany of quality defects in production of the 787 Dreamliner, the 737 MAX and the 767-based KC-46 tanker, a congressional committee sent letters Tuesday to both Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration seeking pertinent manufacturing and quality control records.
The letters from Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), chair of the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, and Rick Larsen (D-Everett), chair of the Subcommittee on Aviation, demand records “regarding continued issues with the manufacture and production of Boeing commercial aircraft at facilities in both Washington state and South Carolina.”
The same House committee’s deep investigation into the two 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people produced a scathing report last fall that cataloged a series of “technical miscalculations and troubling management misjudgments” at Boeing and “grossly insufficient oversight by the FAA.”
The letters initiate a new investigation into production quality lapses across a range of aircraft:
> An electrical problem that grounded 109 newer 737 MAXs last month and stopped deliveries of the jets for about five weeks. > Defective fuselage joins on the 787 that stopped deliveries of the Dreamliner for more than four months and led to a buildup of about 100 parked jets requiring inspection and rework. > Debris left inside the fuel tanks of newly manufactured aircraft, a problem that recurred repeatedly on the 767-based KC-46 Air Force refueling tanker.
“In light of these new and ongoing issues that point to problems in maintaining quality control and appropriate FAA oversight of production issues, I will thoroughly and deliberatively investigate any issues, such as those affecting the 737 MAX and the 787, that may endanger public safety,” DeFazio said in a statement Tuesday.
Last week, the FAA approved Boeing’s fix for the MAX electrical problem. And Boeing has begun delivering 787s again as it gradually completes rework on the backlog of parked planes. The latest report of debris found inside the tanker fuel tanks was last summer.
However, as Boeing struggles to emerge from the 21-month grounding of the MAX after the crashes while coping with the demand collapse and cash squeeze from the pandemic downturn, the eruption of one quality problem after another has presented a series of setbacks.
“Congress has an obligation to … ensure U.S. aviation remains the global gold standard in safety,” Larsen said. “I will continue to push for rigorous oversight of the FAA and industry to improve the safety of air travel.”
Boeing said Tuesday it has received the letter and is reviewing it.

I will add that if you do care about equality of opportunity than you should be fretting about how parents treat their children if only to judge any disparity between those educated by the state and those not.
Far more logical than anything else.

Your specific case, though, sounds less about safety than the sheer absence of sidewalks since the city fathers didn't envisage anyone not driving from the airport?
The committee found DHSC had “wasted hundreds of millions of pounds on PPE which is of poor quality and cannot be used for the intended purpose.”

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-57156320
The parallels with covid in early 2020 are startling.
That being said... I think Farage almost certainly overestimated his pull in the US. Simply, he's not that known: he doesn't get interviewed on Fox News, and he was just a guy who was a friend of Donald's.
My guess is that the opening up on the Continent will happen without hospitalizations going through the roof, and it will be clear that we could have moved faster to unlock.

No one has convincingly debunked it - as far as I can see (certainly a Twitter search produces little apart from random accusations of CGI)
It’s an assumption that it’s a craft of any kind.
Neither can I.
But you will recall that the other claims out there - that bits of these things had been recovered - he flatly denied.
That's the big puzzle. I can understand that average dudes on PB will be weirdly credulous (or overly skeptical) but... Obama?
Do you think the aliens believe in the same God as us?

Farage is even LESS know in USA than Ruby Wax; have never run into ANYONE on this side of the Atlantic (or the Pacific) who ever heard of her. But a few politico-nerd-obsessives (such as yours truly) HAVE heard of Nick.
But none I know of who'd pay $25 to hob-nob with him.
Heck, personally refused thirty years ago to pay that much to see Dr. Hunter S. Thompson! And still would even if he was still alive!!
And whatever you wanna say about NF - for good or ill - he's NOWHERE in same league as HST.

That's what I want to know.
Perhaps he is just skint though. A divorce to pay for, no day job anymore - gotta do what he's gotta do.
Why not become a Tory MP?!
I've never been one to be so effected by news stories and I like to think I can understand a little of the nuance.... but so many children are being killed. Its just damn sad.

Generally, the short bus is a smaller version of a regular school bus that carries mentally challenged students to school. On rare occasions, if your school board is a bunch of assholes (like mine), you will be forced to ride in a short bus for field trips if you class contains less than 18 students.
