This is why Packer won and this will founder.

Packer got players money they deserved and weren't currently getting.

Football doesn't have that problem, the players already make eye watering sums, the players are not driving this.

Is there any evidence that it's more deadly or, especially, more contagious than the Kent Plague? I've not heard anything to this effect so far. Even so, the decision to leave the border open until Friday, to allow thousands of people to stampede across it before hotel quarantine is imposed, is fantastically stupid.

The Ed Woodward who used to work at JP Morgan? Who advised the Glazers on their acquisition? Who then went to work for the Glazers? That Ed Woodward? Yes, the very same.

    Amazing.

I wonder how JP Morgan are planning to fund all this. Selling bonds or some other packaged security instrument on the back of it all I imagine.

Yes. Bans should be immediate - not staggered to allow infected people to avoid quarantine (thus essentially negating their whole purpose).

I'm told that's how they're doing it. It feels like a real disaster idea as the clubs are said to be securitizing future TV rights money to get the cash today. It feels unwise.

didn't we point out that the two clubs that most desperately need cash are Real Madrid and Barcelona?

and the English ones are probably not that far behind if they've lost their match day revenue (i.e. 20% of they usual revenue)

Who the hell cares what the current crop of players happen to think? If they don't like it, they'll be able to move on somewhere they don't have to worry about it, and there'll be a queue round the block of players hoping to replace them.

Players have always been the least important part of any club. The vast majority are forgotten within five minutes of transferring out.

Here’s a problem for ESL. I don’t see how the games can go ahead in this country without serious trouble outside the grounds.

I’ve never been on a demo, but I’d picket the turnstiles and shout scab any scum bags entering the grounds.

The ICC (owned and operated by the BCCI and egged on by us and the Aussies for short term cash) is killing cricket. UEFA and FIFA were already trying to kill football, and needed to be toppled, but this will accelerate it. God I hope Rugby Union steers clear of this sort of nonsense.

I’ve never been on a demo, but I’d picket the turnstiles and shout scab any scum bags entering the grounds.

Quicker and simpler to get an online petition of people who wont touch any advertisers of the super league. Imagine that could get to 5 million across Europe within a couple of days if organised by the fans groups.

I'm sure they knew it would be unpopular, the brazenness of their smarmy justifications for the move indicate that. My hope is that they genuinely underestimated the extent of that unpopularity, and how willing governments and footballing authorities would be to act (if, indeed, they do), and that while they were prepared to push through to a degree, this will end up being too much.

Perhaps they have already crossed the Rubicon and they cannot pull back now even if they regret it, but fingers crossed.

He got the headline he wanted in March, then immediately gave up.

    What a charlatan.

It was actually worse than this. He overstated by miles his pre Covid weight - claimed it was 17.5 stones lol - so as to be able to exaggerate to great sympathy how much weight he'd lost due to the disease.

Only Philip Thompson swallowed this - and it ultimately (after a tumble with me) led to him having to make the ludicrous claim that Johnson (at just 5 feet 7) was as heavy as that due to being "all muscle and very little fat".
    You are a liar.

I never said that he had "very little fat" so please stop telling lies.

You claimed that he wasn't fat enough to be 17.5 stone, I said I entirely believe it is plausible he is 17.5 stone. I said he'll have a mix of muscles (which is denser than fat) and fat (which he clearly has) to make it plausible to be 17.5 stone.

And quite frankly 17.5 stone isn't "that" much.

I think he's fat enough to be 17.5 stone, you don't. That's the difference.
17.5 stone for a short man is ginormous. Maradona at the nadir of his weight problems wasn't much more than that. And I'm afraid that in seeking to explain the inexplicable you did advance the notion of him being mainly muscle. It wasn't your finest hour.

Not that I go on about it to embarrass you. I'm not like that. First mention for at least 6 months.
17.5 stone is not ginormous. Its obese but guess what so is Boris. Its not even exceptionally obese.

Entirely feasible, he's a fat man who cycles. Entirely plausible he's that fat and you're rather ignorant in thinking he couldn't be that fat.
It's more than SIX stone overweight. C'mon. Get real. He was never that. He lied about it.
Yes that's entirely plausible. He's clearly at his biggest been very obese. Quite clearly. Do you deny that?

That gives him a BMI of 36. Obese but not morbidly obese (40+).

Entirely plausible. I would call him obese. I would call him obese today, and he's been bigger than he is now. I would say he's been very obese in the past.

So yes 36 BMI is entirely believable. Heck it could have been higher.

So all the players - who like to be loved and popular - will start getting terrible abuse, soon. If this persists
Klopp will be the story later. Anything other than full throated support and it’s headlines. And he won’t like this.

The public paused long enough to complete the poll to say the timetable is about right before they welcomed the overnight visitors into their homes.

I find that poll staggering. I simply cannot believe it reflects majority opinion. What's going on? Is it that some people are not that badly inconvenienced by the restrictions or are they simply ignoring them? Or maybe they don't want to register a protest and are keeping quiet in case the government clamps down further? Whatever is going on it seems remarkable that the people's patience is holding firm when we are down to almost zero daily deaths.

Well, MaxPB has the following theory

    - the CFR measures the ratio of deaths to cases.
    - The older groups are now pretty much vaccinated.
    - So cases are going to come, more and more from the *unvaccinated* oldsters
    - Who are unprotected.
    - So more likely to die.

Sort of - the tide goes out and leaves the rock behind....

    It's not unlikely, I think.

This is Sky's take on it

Pub landlord grapples with Sir Keir Starmer's staff after ordering Labour leader to leave

Sir Keir Starmer has been told to leave a pub in Bath by its landlord over his support for the COVID lockdown.

The incident happened while the Labour leader was on a walkabout in the city ahead of the local elections.

Rod Humphris, landlord of the Raven pub, shouted "that man is not allowed in my pub" and "get out of my pub" as Sir Keir, wearing a black face mask, walked out of the door, with the incident captured on camera by reporters.

The landlord later said: "I had heard that the Labour Party were coming round and he turned up and I told him what I thought of him, basically.

"I think he has utterly failed us as the leader of the Opposition, he has completely failed to ask the questions that needed asking, like, why did we throw away our previous pandemic preparedness?

"Why have we just accepted lockdown?

"Why have we just accepted the loss of all our freedoms?"

Of course. But others are surely allowed to react and, if they want, put in consequences for you doing what you want to do? I would quite like that new car my neighbour has purchased, but the government has put in consequences if I choose to take it from him.

And yes, that's not an entirely serious comparison, and I take the point that government blundering in seeking to do...something, may not be a good idea, but it seems pretty possible that something proportionate and reasonable could be found to dissuade them from taking this action. They could still choose to do it, even if it is made harder or more costly somehow.
