He won't, but Donald Trump deserves to end up in a prison cell for all he has done and caused through the most ridiculous narcissism and selfishness. Poor USA.
And yet, even now, tens and tens of millions will be cheering him and those storming the building on, with at best fake remonstration for the extremity of it.
I am watching on youtube on the first channel I found posting footage - He is clearly a conservative, calls himself a patriot but is in shock at what he is seeing.
You really could not have predicted that the US would collapse into anarchy
This is truly shocking
This IS shocking, but NOT the entire US. Unless you think the entire UK was collapsing into anarchy at the time of the Gordon Riots?
The 1863 Draft Riots in New York City were a US equivalent - not the sad spectacle being sponsored today in DC by Trumspky, Cruz and their fellow Proud Boys.
The symbolism here is the governmental capital and capitol here, I think ; that's what much of the world will find shocking ; or encouraging, if you're North Korea.
What the f? How has security in DC been this shite?
Same as Westminster in March 2017.
If Michael Fallon's bodyguards weren't in the area then we could have seen dozens of MPs murdered.
That's true, although one would hope it would have been better if thousands of very angry people were being riled up nearby, and some of them are likely carrying guns.

The real worry will be if armed idiots start taking to the streets in other cities..... Fingers crossed this is local to DC.
With the difficulties of producing films and drama during covid it is good of the Americans to provide a live political show for us this year. Please could they make it a bit more believable though?
I really wish news organisations stopped calling people protestors when they break into places. At that point you are not a protestor, you are a rioter. You might make an allowance in a genuine dictatorship with a crowd barging their way in somewhere, as a justified rioter, but these people in the US Capitol are not protesting.
And yes this applies to far more than merely Trump protests.
Kinzinger has been very public in his denuncations of Trumpsky's anti-democratic (and anti-republican, both small-case) assault on the 2020 election result.
Have no reason to doubt he is sincere. OR that he is staking his political future on the OPPOSITE bet than Cruz, Hawley & etc. - that Trumpsky will turn out to be the Joe McCarthy of the 21st century, with a similar trajectory: lauch, soar, crash & burn.
The UK is no longer in the top 10 for deaths per capita. It's been overtaken by countries like Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Liechtenstein and North Macedonia.
Those figures need to be taken with a very LARGE pinch of salt. Only a week ago the Russian statistical agency attributed another 130,000 excess deaths to COVID-19. Similar issues apply to the figures from a lot of other countries, so things are a lot worse in a lot of other countries than they may seem from offical COVID-19 tallies.
Some very strange numbers in there.
UK - 1.4m active cases - 2,645 critical
Germany - 340k active cases - 5,569 critical
UK - 1.4m active cases - 2,645 critical
France - 2.4m active cases - 2,616 critical
Germany has 3x the per capita ICU capacity of the UK, so less rationing needed.
Don't they have a different definition of ICU, as well?
This is great! Gunfight in Congress! Mrs RP informs me this is how Gilead was formed. And Pence lit the bike touch paper then stepped away whilst his people did their work...
With the difficulties of producing films and drama during covid it is good of the Americans to provide a live political show for us this year. Please could they make it a bit more believable though?
This is the most Hollywood-movie-in-real-life rolling news since 9/11, sadly.
I despise the man, but no way is Gove responsible for this.
Are you sure?
Yes. He would have organised it, executed it brilliantly, seen it though, seized the building, stood up on top and absent mindedly declared Biden is the rightful winner.
Tbh, this could be the final straw for the second amendment.
Nope. We all know what the arguments would be.
Don't politicise these events to take away my rights It was a tiny minority Only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun I love my guns
It's not even only Republicans who have guns, I don't doubt many Democrat members of congress would push back.
SO how do you think today's events bear upon a potential visit by The Donald to Scotland, or any other part of the UK.
Surely he's given MORE than sufficient ground for being banned from entering the UK as a gross risk to public safety. And would NOT be first to be shunned from your shores on that basis.
WHAT, if any, would be downside for HMG for taking such a decision?
Personally, would take failure to ban Donald Trumpsky as a risk to public order (and deceny) would be almost proof positive that Boris Johnson is also a charter-member of the Putinist plot against the West.

The stakes are now this high: as of the past 4 hours it must now be even money that if Trump fails to overthrow the government, he spends the rest of his life in prison. Stepping back is not an option.
This is the worst thing I've ever seen. These aren't protestors, these are terrorists. And this is on Trump, Hawley, Cruz, Gosar and all the rest. I wonder what those congressmen are thinking as they shelter in place at the moment.
SO do you think the Nazis actually started THAT blaze? OR just used it for their own ends?
Well, that depends on whether you fall into the
- It was all planned - Hitler was a lucky opportunist
categories. Serious historians are still arguing about that one.
WRT the Reichstag fire, I have to say I don’t know of any modern historians who argue he was behind it. If he was, he did a very good job of giving the impression he didn’t have a clue what was going on and was completely unprepared.

Don't they have a different definition of ICU, as well?
Not really. Category 3 ICU means advanced respiratory support, such as ventilation.
Mask wearing and social distancing amongst the protestors appears patchy.
Super spreader event....
Seems like an excellent group of people to catch it, maybe they'll all get false positive tests next week and then false positive death certificates too.
It's a coordinated mob, urged on by an individual and tacitly (though not directly) supported by many many many members of Congress, storming the legislature to prevent the law being carried out, and some of them are armed.
It isn't close to a coup attempt, it is a coup attempt.

I don't think he's going abroad anywhere now, I think he's digging in for a fight.
Down the months I have criticised covid lockdowns for their many adverse effects, but I never thought I'd be able to add 'possible overthrow of the world's most powerful democracy' to them.
I despise the man, but no way is Gove responsible for this.
Gove is not responsible. But he knew exactly what Trump was. He didn't care.
People cosying up even to an odious politician cannot be expected to be able to foresee that that person will one day engage in what amounts to a coup, don't be absurd. The licence to criticise someone for cosying up to someone they can reasonable foresee will do awful political things does not extend that far, since virtually no one would think a stable democracy like the US might lead to this in 4 years.
Now Cruz. Looks like every villain from every western film we’ve ever seen.
The flabby, slightly camp one who used the likes of Jack Palance to do the dirty work.
Probably imagines himself to be hard enough to be a lead in Cut-throats Nine. Hell yes, he's tough enough.
I believe that some US clothing outlets make a killing with the survivalist gun nuts by putting 'tactical' in the description - tactical chinos, tactical pyjamas etc. Cruz looks like he'd definitely have tactical pjs.
I once had a summer job in the Royal Scottish Academy as a security guard during the festival. One afternoon Jack Palance came in for the show, and after backing away from a painting to get a better look he knocked over an old lady; he was hugely embarrassed and apologetic (and she was fine), but it was still one of the best things I've ever seen.

FYI, yours truly once rode on it, along with the late, great US Sen. Paul Simon (D-IL) - eat your heat out, Sunil!

So we'd be fucking stuck with Donald Fucking Trump.

The riots of 1968 probably cost Humphrey the election. These will surely cost the Republicans their reputation as the party of law and order.

Possibly through reinforced glass, on visiting days in a supermax...
