Like the time I had to stay in a Premier Inn.

No they've said the details will be announced by the end of the month I think.
The end of the month. This is just embarrassing. I really don't understand the thinking behind this at all. If we had brought in mandatory quarantine in February for those coming back from the ski slopes or from Madrid we would almost certainly not be where we are.
Guernsey introduced selective self quarantine in early March, then absolute quarantine for all arrivals from the 19th. It has now had two weeks without a new case and only 7 active cases remaining. It also has the UK equivalent of 35,000 Track n'Trace people already trained vs the 18,000 the UK is starting to recruit.

Yes, its a lot easier in a small jurisdiction - but why the UK has persisted in this non-quarantine of arrivals strikes me as "too clever by half".
Is there any country in Europe where this is not in chaos?

    eg France:
    https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/news/frances-new-quarantine-rules-could-be-applied-to-travelers-from-eu-countries/

"On May 2, France’s Minister of Health Olivier Véran said that anyone coming from abroad would have to go through quarantine for two weeks, as a part of the country’s efforts to stop the spread of Coronavirus.

The next day Veran announced that the imposed quarantine would not include the UK citizens, European citizens and Schengen area citizens.

“People entering the French territory from countries in the European area (EU / Schengen and the United Kingdom) will NOT be affected by the quarantine measure announced in France, the details of which will be determined shortly,” the French consulate in Britain stressed.

However, up to this point, it remains unclear where and how citizens coming from abroad in France will be quarantined, but, according to the reports, hotels and medical centres will be used for this purpose, though this is not confirmed yet."

Why would anyone want to go to the South of France for a holiday when the UK has Blackpool, Cleethorpes, and Southend-on-Sea?
I'd put Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Pembrokeshire and the west coast of Scotland ahead of those but each to their own.

He has allowed the Germans to annex part of the UK without a shot being fired.

Take up is pitiful around these parts. I've shaved my beard to wear one.😭

Mask wearing just ain't gonna happen in the UK, it seems.
I think there might be strong resistance from HM coppers and spooks to mask wearing becoming common practice. Plays hell with facial recognition. Almost worth welcoming it for that fact alone.

The Channel Islands were only given up because they were indefensible given their size and location, and they were liberated at the end of the War of course. Whereas the current Government isn't particularly bothered about what happens to Northern Ireland (indeed, I suspect that it would be relieved to wave bye bye to it.)

Biden has polled surprisingly well in Florida given it was a poor set of results for the Democrats in 2018 set against a national "wave" election.

It would be a huge boost for him. As it stands, gaining the three most marginal Trump 2016 states (Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin) would be enough but leaves no room for error. Winning Florida would allow him to miss any ONE of those three, or Wisconsin plus one of the others. It increases his margin of error quite a bit.

Ubergeeks like yours truly will point out that Blackpool has an extensive tram line, Cleethorpes rail station is almost directly on the beach, and that Southend has both a narrow-gauge pier railway and a clifftop funicular!
My usual train for commuting was the Cleethorpes to Manchester Airport service.
I last went to Cleethorpes in November, after doing the Saturday-only Retford to Barnetby train.

True but had a massively higher level of German soldier to native population ratio than France too. 'The Model Occupation' painted the Islanders as not being willing to resist in the way that the French did, but as all history, its a very complicated story.

In fairness to the Channel Islands, it would've been really hard to run an effective resistance on such tiny islands. Hiding activities is hard in small communities; how many people have real expertise in operations; there were limited valuable targets given fringe role of Channel Islands in supply chains (hence not a priority for external support). There had also been fairly significant civilian evacuation.

Yes, its a lot easier in a small jurisdiction - but why the UK has persisted in this non-quarantine of arrivals strikes me as "too clever by half".
So the number of people trained in Guernsey is .... er .... TWO, which could be a parkkeeper and his oppo.

    :-D

Gently suggest that that is hardly a relevant comparison.
    35. Two weeks without any new cases. Only 7 active cases. We won’t be letting anyone in from the U.K. without self quarantine any time soon. And there does not appear to be much we can learn from the U.K. either.

I think they know that, with Boris Johnson putting a border down the Irish Sea and effectively giving up Norn Iron to the EU you can't blame the EU for thinking Boris Johnson's a terrible negotiator.
He has allowed the Germans to annex part of the UK without a shot being fired.

And he thinks he's the new Winston Churchill. The irony of it. And the shame.
IN fairness the Germans annexed the Channel Islands without a shot. Or was that not part of the UK?
The Channel Islands are not and never have been part of the United Kingdom. And the circumstances were obviously very, very different.

The Channel Islands were only given up because they were indefensible given their size and location, and they were liberated at the end of the War of course. Whereas the current Government isn't particularly bothered about what happens to Northern Ireland (indeed, I suspect that it would be relieved to wave bye bye to it.)
The Channel Islands collaborated more with the Nazis and had less resistance than French during WWII, the Channel Islands (and Guernsey) definitely aren't British.
Pretty hard to run a meaningful resistance on an island 7 miles by 6 with more troops than citizens on it..

On the subject of holidays, we've transfered our Cornwall cottage booking forward a year to June 2021 but while I was on the phone sorting that, desparate for a holiday this year, I booked another week in Cornwall for October this year.

You'll be fine. We'll have forgotten all about it by then.

I think now that people have had time to digest the new "stay alert" messaging it's going down better than I expected. Lots of people going out but there does seem to be a concerted effort from.everyone to keep their distance. I think Boris will have to do another address to the nation on mask wearing though, basically teach everyone how to put on on, how to take off correctly and make them mandatory.

Wore a mask down Tesco yesterday. There were about two other users (despite the fact that observance of social distancing rules around here appears to be very good.) Probably shan't bother again.
It's only the incel dorks on here that bleat about masks all the time.

No-one normal wears them. Like you say, people are very good at social distancing - and that's fine.

Where exactly are you going to hide on an island that is only 30 square miles and has one German soldier for every resident? If we want to get technical, England is a colony of the Norman lands of which the Channel Islands are the oldest.

Let it go, Francis, let it go. It was just an obscure little opinion piece about Oxford being a breeding ground for a certain type of class-based sense of superiority and entitlement.
This is a quote from it: 'If my university is the first to develop the vaccine, I’m worried that it will be used as it has been in the past, to fulfil its political, patriotic function as proof of British excellence.'

Utterly hateful and stupid - the modern left at its absolute worst.
    OTOH -

"We must not forget the lessons that the pandemic has taught us so far: that the UK and the US are in fact not exceptions at the global stage. That we are not only vulnerable but can also afford to learn lessons from countries, regardless of whether we have a special relationship with them – such as South Korea."

Wise words from a woke woman with her thinking cap on. All should heed.

Given their lack of strategic value, the Channel Islands probably contributed more to the Allied ward effort by keeping a German division tied up and having a shitload of extremely heavy but pointless fortifications built.

It really does look like the UK epicenter is now care homes, I think community transmission is extremely low. Anecdotally messages coming from doctors in the family WhatsApp is of virtually no new virus admissions per day in their London trusts. That is being reflected in the London hospital death rate.

Surely we need to have lockdown carehomes at the L5 measures and L3 for the wider community.

My sister had a flat in Whitley Bay in the late fifties
I stayed there , whilst working for Portacabin from York in the early 80s.
We were fitting out temporary office blocks at Swanhunters shipyard Wallsend, just after the falkland war.
I was sat in a pub one Tuesday night , when the window was smashed .
A bit of a shock compared to a midweek night out in York.
Whitley Bay is pretty hip these days. It is a desirable residence for Geordie yuppies.

I must admit I thought that was a bit steep. He'd have a BMI of 37.1 which would have given him very little chance of escaping ICU if the general consensus is to be believed*.

(*Although as far as I can tell the actual evidence of an increased Covid-19 risk from obesity is, er, rather thin on the ground.)

When will the EU realise one of the reasons we left was so that we DON'T have a level playing field. Keep bleating "level playing field" - and we'll soon all be singing Auld Lang Syne and no futher forward...
They do realise that, hence their position.
The obvious UK response is to call their bluff and "dump" on them under WTO.

Undercut them where they most fear it and challenge their model.

They'll soon be back at the table.
We're going to bomb them into accepting our concessions.

What's a travelodge? I have heard about them in the way I have heard about these people called the Lib Dems.

    The Hawaiian pizzas of hotels.
As a poor grad student, in early days of dating Mrs U, we went away on a trip and I booked to stay at a travelodge at it was obviously cheap.

Mrs U being of rather classier background than me, had never stayed at such an establishment. I was soon informed if we wanted to carry on dating that this would be the last time we would be staying at such an establishment.

Given their lack of strategic value, the Channel Islands probably contributed more to the Allied ward effort by keeping a German division tied up and having a shitload of extremely heavy but pointless fortifications built.
Nearly a tenth of the entire “Atlantic Wall”’s concrete was in the Channel Islands and more heavy artillery than than on 600 miles of Normandy coastline. And tens of thousands of German troops who could have been more usefully employed elsewhere...from a German POV. Left to starve after Operation Overlord.

Hey, I am not just on the Trump is Going to Lose train I am the Conductor. But Florida by 6 would be a monstrous win in modern terms.

I suspect the sheer volume of retirees in Florida is helping Biden, I doubt many of them are too impressed by Trump's coronavirus antics.

Salford Council say they are in regular contact with the leaders of the city's Orthdox Jewish community after reports of families ignoring lockdown rules.

Pictures have circulated on social media of Jewish families in Higher Broughton allegedly ignoring restrictions and failing to social distance.

Councillor David Lancaster, lead member for environment and community safety, said it was only a "small minority" of the Jewish community who were failing to adhere to social distance measures.

He said the council are in weekly communication with the community leaders to keep residents informed of the latest restrictions. This week marked the beginning of an easing of lockdown restrictions, with new rules including two people from different households being able to meet outdoors at places like parks, as long as they are 2m apart.

However, a resident claimed members of the Jewish community in Salford have not been following the guidelines. They said a night this week saw "lots of parties going down with marquees up in alleyways" and claimed there were gatherings in the street with bonfires also taking place.

Why would anyone want to go to the South of France for a holiday when the UK has Blackpool, Cleethorpes, and Southend-on-Sea?
I'd put Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, Pembrokeshire and the west coast of Scotland ahead of those but each to their own.
    Oh I agree.

I just have a soft spot for Blackpool.

But Cleethorpes is full of Dingles and Southend is in Essex! Ugh.

I must admit I thought that was a bit steep. He'd have a BMI of 37.1 which would have given him very little chance of escaping ICU if the general consensus is to be believed*.

Cleethorpes has seen better days but it isn't quite as depressing as Blackpool. I believe the Humberston 'Fitties' are now listed. I quite like the coastline to the S although it is a bit esoteric for some perhaps.

All I need for a holiday is to be able to park a car in Scotland for a few days. It isn't hard to social distance on Bidein a'Choire Sheasgaich or Ben Alder, although that doesn't exactly benefit the economy much.

Unfortunately May and early June is the time for that kind of thing and August is most definitely not...

Road Chef lodges were very good before the original owners sold out in the mid-90s. They had one at Taunton Deane on the M5 which I used to stay at overnight when travelling from London to West Cornwall.

Sometimes I would do the journey in a single evening - 300 miles or so - just me, the night and the music and a late dinner at the Little Chef in Victoria (Cornwall).

Premier Inns are a Godsend - clean, comfortable and reliable. The one about half-a-mile up the road from my Mother-in-Law's place is ideal for visits (she's of an age now and not really up to catering for guests.) Hopefully it's still there and operational when we can finally make the trip again. I am not optimistic that this will happen soon.

Yes, you are a natural born citizen if your parents were working overseas for the US Government/armed forces when you were born.

It is something that was confirmed when John McCain who was born outside the US was deemed eligible to run for President.

It depends. On average yes - there are some dire older Travelodges - but otoh the newest ones are nearly as good as Premier Inn and usually quite a bit cheaper.

Because the US insists that its various overseas bases are actually US soil.

    Evening all :)

Good to see horse racing returns in Ireland on June 8th and hopefully the UK will be back the week before and before people worry about the "R" number, it went up in Germany after restrictions were eased and then fell back so we'll see.

As to the "staycation" debate, it's interesting to note in June 2019 British people abroad spent twice as much as visitors to the UK.

    https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/leisureandtourism/bulletins/overseastravelandtourism/june2019provisionalresults

About twice as many British people travelled abroad as there were visitors to the UK so there's an argument British people staying and spending at home would make more sense than British people travelling abroad and contributing to foreign economies diverse and numerous.

That makes a good few assumptions about how much spending power British people "staycating" or should that be "staycationing" or shall I just stick to spending their holidays in the UK will have to spend come August or September.

Oddly enough, that pattern of two British visits abroad to every one foreign visitor to the UK and £2 spent by British people abroad for every £1 spent by a foreign visitor is quite consistent through the year.
