Comfortable LD win on current polls, indeed the Tories could get closer to Labour than Labour do to the LDs
  • How crap was Clegg to lose it to the numpty in the first place? Still a million a year and a nice house for being Zuckerberg's fluffer must seem like a better gig.

Some of the questions for the contenders in the Tory leadership race were about as relevant!

    ON TOPIC:

Sheff Hallam was apparently 66% Remain
+ Labour are in the doldrums compared to 2017
    + It's a well-heeled area
+ People will be (fairly or not) annoyed with Labour for nominating O'Mara

Can I just say the lounge in CDG 2E Gate K isn't anything as good as the lounge in Gate L.

Gate L is as nice as the new KLM non-Schangen lounge at Schiphol which was a surprise.

For those that liked British Rail sandwiches from circa 1978 a visit to the lounge in Sofia would be a great highlight of your trip. Otherwise I would really recommend not bothering. Cheap cigs though if you still smoke.

To add - why does Air France serve champagne but doesn't offer proper champagne flutes? I've asked them before and they still can't give a decent answer..

That burger was what brought up my comment.

Debating whether to buy some macaroons or not to bother. At £3 each I suspect they wouldn't be appreciated

So, flying to Dubai on moon-rock sprinkled air miles in mid December, eating a Hawaiian whilst watching Die Hard and listening to Radiohead on Shure earbuds would be the perfect PB smugfest?

Xmas movies, no comment because I haven't seen many, but as regards live bands, gosh so many good ones. Radiohead, for example, can certainly rock out when the mood takes them.

He will try and renegotiate the backstop but there won't be a further extension as he knows that means the Brexit Party overtake the Tories again and push the Tories into third, he has to deliver Brexit on October 31st Deal or No Deal as he has promised

I don't think anyone on here pays the extra to stay in a suite do they? I usually get them (as I have for the past 4 weeks) for being such an awesome customer (or just being polite to the manager which a scarily large number of people fail to be).

I forgot that to rely on a train, in Boris's Britain, is to engage in a crapshoot with the Devil.

I am on a train. There is a couple (two males) with a young baby who is making gurgling, squealing, and other prevocalisations. Go on, guess who they sat next to. One guess... :(
Should be embarking on my Fourth Scottish Expedition next week, based in Glasgow.
I have been to Glasgow. It's not as much fun as you think... :(

Did you ask them in English in an "Allo, Allo" accent? "Deer Aire Fronce, whay doo yoo sarve...". They appreciate that approach, I understand... :)
Nope in my best french (so probably très bad but c'est le vie). It's is a mystery to them as much as to me as Schiphol has switched to Cava (cheaper) but retained the more appropriate glasses.

In other news my flight is now delayed 90 minutes so I'm glad Newcastle is a 24 hour airport...

I was on a train two weeks back and a family of three (mum and dad and three year old) sat at my table. Dad produced a Lego kit for said three year old. Of a fire engine. Guess what siren-like vocalisations the three year old made all the way from Paddington to Totnes. Go on, guess.....

I will bet you mano a mano - as much imaginary money as you like - that Boris Johnson at some point before 31 Oct announces that he will be extending in order to hold fresh talks with the EU with a view to getting a "deal that works for Britain".

I'll go up to ridiculous (pretend) sums if necessary.

"When Jeremy Corbyn wrote a letter putting himself forward as a transitional prime minister purely to block no deal, extend article 50 and call an election, Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson could have welcomed the move as constructive, as the SNP, Greens, Plaid Cymru have done, with several Tory backbenchers prepared to talk, too. Instead, Swinson revealed that while the Lib Dems had been willing to prop David Cameron up for five years, implementing massive cuts and trebling tuition fees, she’s not prepared to countenance supporting Corbyn for five weeks solely to stop a disorderly exit from the EU.

Only if staying in a $5,000 a night suite in a 7-star hotel upon arrival.
I realise I hail from the plebeian classes, but do hotels go up to seven stars?
I only had dinner at a restaurant in the 7 star hotel. Pretty ordinary. Extremely gaudy décor.
At the other end of the scale, I was staying in eastern Turkey in the 80s. The guidebook dispensed with a star rating as none of the hotels would make even one star. They used a cockroach rating instead. I enjoyed the relative luxury of a two cockroach hotel, having avoided the three cockroach place next door.

Of course. Swinson rules our supporting Corbyn into No 10 and thousands of unhappy Tories feel safe enough to switch their allegiance. Result: surge for the Lib Dems in the polling. Unhappy Labourites realise that she is not going to support Johnson either. Result: further movement from the Corbyn Socialist party. Further result: everybody happy. Brexit stopped and we get back to a sound economy and a fair society.

I suspect the wishful thinking lies with you - certainly as far as Labour tactical votes are concerned. She has given new life to 'the Tories' Little Helpers' theme. As Owen Jones points out in his Guardian article, here is someone perfectly happy to prop up Cameron for 5 years yet not prepared to put Corbyn in office for 5 weeks. So much for her committment to doing everything to avoid No Deal.

The key is the word solely
Exactly. She would countenance a hard Brexit but not a Corbyn led 5 week government whose remit will have agreed beforehand.

There is another practical problem. About 50 Labour MPs will not countenance any other interim PM.

    So Johnson wins.

It would be nice. What is much more amusing is watching the frustrated labour supporters ranting in their desperation. They know they will never win with Corbyn as their leader.

They also know Jo has dodged the elephant trap with poise and elegance. Had she endorsed Corbyn, as sensible political people know, it would have handed a huge gift to the Conservatives.

    And here's the thing.

For Labour maintaining the duopoly matters - the Conservatives are the opposition, the LDs and anyone seeking to break up the cost status quo are the enemy. Labour know as long as they are the only alternate game in town they will win someday but if someone else comes again people may start asking what is the point of voting Labour and indeed what is the point of Labour at all.

Only if staying in a $5,000 a night suite in a 7-star hotel upon arrival.
I realise I hail from the plebeian classes, but do hotels go up to seven stars?
It's all nonsense. I stayed at the incredible Marbella Club once. I asked the Manager why it only had four stars. He explained that to have five it had to have a lift and as it was only single storey....

Ken Clarke's prepared to be a temporary PM if necessary - though he's 14 years older than Churchill in 1940! - and he explained the constitutional position on R4. It sounded plausible and doesn't seem to guarantee at all that Jeremy Corbyn becomes PM in a national government, even if he's LOTO and thinks that he's entitled to be next PM.

I can't see parliament choosing a left-winger if they could choose someone who they think is equally or more capable from the centre, centre-left or centre-right. It's about sorting out Brexshit which might be a confirmatory referendum with the option to remain, Norway's terms or something else, or even a referendum on Norway's terms.

It's not about long-term governing of the UK; that's only possible if something is done about Brexshit. We've now been going around in circles for 38 months without getting any further forward, in fact I'd say we've gone backwards as the compromises that people discussed in 2016 have vanished from the airwaves.

Hmm. So Boris is now reaching out to Angela and Emmanuel. Perhaps the parliamentary campaign to stop No Deal - i.e the fact that it looks doomed - has focused his mind.

Extension and fresh talks. That's the only way out for the Great Man.
He will try and renegotiate the backstop but there won't be a further extension as he knows that means the Brexit Party overtake the Tories again and push the Tories into third, he has to deliver Brexit on October 31st Deal or No Deal as he has promised
Maybe he thinks (knows) that no deal Brexit will be a catastrophe for the Country and doesn’t want that to be his defining legacy. As a remainer, surely you can empathise with that? And he really was bluffing all along. Just a thought.

I am not unsympathetic to your points , but a non-party leader would only be appointed by acclamation. I simply do not see that as likely to be forthcoming from either side of the House.

    Trains... must have trains...
I am on a train. There is a couple (two males) with a young baby who is making gurgling, squealing, and other prevocalisations. Go on, guess who they sat next to. One guess... :(
I was on a train two weeks back and a family of three (mum and dad and three year old) sat at my table. Dad produced a Lego kit for said three year old. Of a fire engine. Guess what siren-like vocalisations the three year old made all the way from Paddington to Totnes. Go on, guess.....

(And then mum took up the rest of the table by setting out an enormous sushi buffet.....)

    Hell is other people.
The sad thing is that he had planned so well up to a point. That is without doubt the best example of thinking things only so far I've seen in a long time..
He was almost certainly a political advisor.....

No-one. We have a GE and the voters decide if they want to keep Jezza, switch to Bozo's replacement (Rory?) or go full-on Farage.
  • MikeSmithsonMikeSmithson Posts: 7,382

Is there a guarantee that Swinson can herself win in a GE against a revived SNP ?

Point to me a main party leader who has lost their seat at a general election. it doesn't happen. And in terms of revival the LDs have revived much more than the SNP in Scotland and I'd expect gains there.

Go look at how Gordon Brown did in Scotland at GE2010 - this was totally against the national trend.
