Just two weeks to the minute after we saw the exit poll there’s some sensational new polling from YouGov for the Times. The figures are above. TMay is now trailing Corbyn as best PM.
The long she stays the more she damages the Tory party and ensures Corbyn becomes PM.
Not NOW, rather in good time.
Agreed.
Tories adore their leadership contests, and settling scores with each other going back to the time of Brian Boru, but there's no sensible option but to keep calm and carry on right now.
Partly, but also without a University and the broader intellectual life that I had become used to. Hospitals are some of the most multicultural places to work, even in places like Cornwall or Cumbria.
Partly - just imagined that I replaced white with black or Asian then as a doc I would be in deep shit.
Not sure why it should add any extra pressure on May considering she won't be fighting the next election (and probably won't stick around until much beyond Spring/Summer 2019)
The figures aren't that bad considering the last few weeks.
Dropping from a 39% lead 8 weeks ago to 1% behind is pretty sensational. Get it into your head.
Still, one of them IS the PM. The other isn't....
Gotta love the FTPA.
It's amazing how just a few weeks ago we were showered with much PB Tory glee about the impending end of the FTPA. Now they pathetically cling to it, like a legislative comfort blanket, as they hide in a corner, trying to shut out the world.

Old news. We all know May messed up in a big way. It's priced in. These polls aren't anywhere near as bad as they could be. The next set will be more interesting.

It IS sensational and it shows that we live in extraordinarily volatile times...
Maybe the next "sensational development" will be Cobryn blowing his "popularity" somehow...
Yes perhaps the media - the BBC I mean you - will scrutinise his ludicrous policies. Even a basic grasp of economics should allow serious questions. The one thing that totally infuriated me during the election was the labour insistence that criticism was wrong because the policy aim was good.

Amazing you can remember that and not your passwords
But seriously, the status quo ante would be unlikely to bring about an election in the current circumstances either...
I think Theresa May has grabbed the initiative on the EU citizens and caught the EU on the hop
Why couldn't she be bold and make it a unilateral offer
For the same reason that has applied for the last year: a UK PM cannot hang out to dry British citizens living in the EU27.
That's exactly what she's doing. She is proposing the have fewer rights than they do now.
And fewer rights than the EU is proposing to offer, assuming May wants her terms to be reciprocal.
Yep - the EU27 are offering a far more generous package to British citizens than the UK government is.
The most important difference I can see is that the EU wants anyone who has previously exercised their right to live or work in the UK/EU to maintain that right indefinitely whereas the UK wants to restrict it to people who are resident on the cut off day. There's a massive gulf between the positions.

That is true. But it was you that brought up the FTPA!
It isn't Theresa May who is harming the conservative party. If she leaves, who takes over? How would the situation be any better for them?
They are destroying themselves by trying to hold on to power with no majority. The more time they spend trying to hold on to power, the worse it will get for them.
Both the 2016 referendum and the 2017 general election were historic misjudgements on the part of their respective leaders. Their credibility is shot as the establishment party of government, but FPTP should ensure they come back.
"In first YouGov poll after calling the general election TMay was leading Corbyn by 54-15% as who would make the best PM."
And all the research and pretty graphs showed that that lead implied a 1983+ result.
But it didn't, and TMay will never fight another election. So who cares?
You have to remember the polls were bollocks at the start of the GE campaign and were largely bollocks at the end so drawing conclusions from them is also a load of bollocks. Lets see where we are in 6 months... but they are likely still to be bollocks.

Since they are the only party who can form a government, then they must hold on.

I prefer living in multicultural places like Leicester (where everyone is a minority) rather than in monocultural places. I like variety, and diversity.

Because Mrs May is contaminating the Tory brand further, it is political osmosis.
She's done as much contaminating as she's ever going to do - in fact, she won't be able to push through any of her unpopular policies, precisely because of her crap result.
Another leader now = another election in 6 months = Corbyn + McDonnell + Abbott as PM and CotE and HomSec - why the heck would you want that to happen?
I need to check my records, but I believe this is the first time YouGov have the Labour leader ahead of the Tory leader on the best PM question since the summer of 2007.

Now we know that the election that was beats the election that wasn't in the political disaster stakes.

Sounds about right. Would have been Brown's honeymoon during the floods.

Parties whose "credibility is shot as the establishment party of government" tend not to win 42.5% of the vote even after the shittiest campaign in history...
I don't mean to be funny, but don't most people these days make use of storage lockers and do in fact take time to move all their things in? The storage locker business is booming by all accounts.
I know I have...and no I don't own multiple homes.

We'll need to see the full UK government proposal first. All we can say for sure at this stage is that the EU27 proposal is more generous to UK citizens than the British proposal. However, this will now become a negotiation and there'll be compromise on both sides - that means the final settlement is likely to be much better for UK and EU27 citizens than the current UK position is.

The contenders must wait they hear those footsteps turning towards the abandonment of Brexit, and then try to embody the change.
