    Theresa May must go NOW.

The long she stays the more she damages the Tory party and ensures Corbyn becomes PM.

    Agreed.

Tories adore their leadership contests, and settling scores with each other going back to the time of Brian Boru, but there's no sensible option but to keep calm and carry on right now.

As Bismarck said, a statesman must wait to hear God's footsteps marching through history and try and catch on to his coattails.

The contenders must wait they hear those footsteps turning towards the abandonment of Brexit, and then try to embody the change.

I think Theresa May has grabbed the initiative on the EU citizens and caught the EU on the hop

Why couldn't she be bold and make it a unilateral offer
For the same reason that has applied for the last year: a UK PM cannot hang out to dry British citizens living in the EU27.

That's exactly what she's doing. She is proposing the have fewer rights than they do now.
And fewer rights than the EU is proposing to offer, assuming May wants her terms to be reciprocal.

Yes perhaps the media - the BBC I mean you - will scrutinise his ludicrous policies. Even a basic grasp of economics should allow serious questions. The one thing that totally infuriated me during the election was the labour insistence that criticism was wrong because the policy aim was good.

The most important difference I can see is that the EU wants anyone who has previously exercised their right to live or work in the UK/EU to maintain that right indefinitely whereas the UK wants to restrict it to people who are resident on the cut off day. There's a massive gulf between the positions.

It isn't Theresa May who is harming the conservative party. If she leaves, who takes over? How would the situation be any better for them?

They are destroying themselves by trying to hold on to power with no majority. The more time they spend trying to hold on to power, the worse it will get for them.

Both the 2016 referendum and the 2017 general election were historic misjudgements on the part of their respective leaders. Their credibility is shot as the establishment party of government, but FPTP should ensure they come back.

You have to remember the polls were bollocks at the start of the GE campaign and were largely bollocks at the end so drawing conclusions from them is also a load of bollocks. Lets see where we are in 6 months... but they are likely still to be bollocks.

But it didn't, and TMay will never fight another election. So who cares?

Because Mrs May is contaminating the Tory brand further, it is political osmosis.
She's done as much contaminating as she's ever going to do - in fact, she won't be able to push through any of her unpopular policies, precisely because of her crap result.

Another leader now = another election in 6 months = Corbyn + McDonnell + Abbott as PM and CotE and HomSec - why the heck would you want that to happen?

I need to check my records, but I believe this is the first time YouGov have the Labour leader ahead of the Tory leader on the best PM question since the summer of 2007.

    FPT

I think Theresa May has grabbed the initiative on the EU citizens and caught the EU on the hop

Why couldn't she be bold and make it a unilateral offer
For the same reason that has applied for the last year: a UK PM cannot hang out to dry British citizens living in the EU27.

That's exactly what she's doing. She is proposing the have fewer rights than they do now.
And fewer rights than the EU is proposing to offer, assuming May wants her terms to be reciprocal.
And politically, the EU politically would have to reciprocate anyway.

The EU offer was tabled on 12th June:

    https://ec.europa.eu/commission/publications/position-paper-essential-principles-citizens-rights_en

It is far more generous to UK citizens than the May proposal.
So I see, do you think someone forgot to let Tessa know?

She knows. She's hoping to pull the wool over the eyes of those who don't.

Since they are the only party who can form a government, then they must hold on.
    At what cost comrade?

Now we know that the election that was beats the election that wasn't in the political disaster stakes.

The FTPA means there's no early election when Mrs May is toppled.

Probably in the next ten days there will be a thread on PB comparing Mrs May to Roberto Soldado.

Parties whose "credibility is shot as the establishment party of government" tend not to win 42.5% of the vote even after the shittiest campaign in history...

I suspect Ken Clarke is deeply regretting his 'bloody difficult woman' slip now since she seems to be turning herself into her own parody based on it.

I don't mean to be funny, but don't most people these days make use of storage lockers and do in fact take time to move all their things in?
The storage locker business is booming by all accounts.

    I know I have...and no I don't own multiple homes.

Yep - the EU27 are offering a far more generous package to British citizens than the UK government is.
The most important difference I can see is that the EU wants anyone who has previously exercised their right to live or work in the UK/EU to maintain that right indefinitely whereas the UK wants to restrict it to people who are resident on the cut off day. There's a massive gulf between the positions.

We'll need to see the full UK government proposal first. All we can say for sure at this stage is that the EU27 proposal is more generous to UK citizens than the British proposal. However, this will now become a negotiation and there'll be compromise on both sides - that means the final settlement is likely to be much better for UK and EU27 citizens than the current UK position is.
