If true and Fillon withdraws that would probably see Juppe become LR candidate which would eat into Macron's vote and leave the nationalist right to Le Pen
Guess Juppe COULD be persuaded, "for the sake of the Party and the nation", but he stated several times that he would not be a replacement, saying that he did not wish to open up his family to the kind of pressures that Fillon's family had been subjected to.
Juppe disqualified from office for fraud, makes a comeback. Will be interesting to see if anything else unsavoury about him suddenly appears.

    Oh dear.

But this is worse than it looks, because as a matter of fact the USA could stop the norks doing just that, by the threat or actuality of all out war with or without nukes. So what's stopping me? is what Don will be thinking when this point occurs to him. Never mind the start of modern history, we should be debating whether today marks the beginning of the end of it.

There's an old adage - 'be nice to people on the way up so they can be kind on the way down.'

Sadly for him, it's not a lesson Lewis learned when he was taken off local news front-of-camera reporting when he declared for Labour - it just wasn't compatible with the BBC's 'impartial' status.

When he was transferred to the geeky back office whilst retaining his presenter salary, he didn't endear himself to local colleagues by working to rule and thinking that making the tea every now and then was beneath him.... whilst trousering double wages.

Can't say I've come across 'norks' before. Classy.

Donald Trump is such a tit even on rare occasions he might make a decent point I have an inclination to disregard it. And I voted Leave, so I cannot be a metropolitan liberal.
I lived with an Aussie for four years who used to refer to her bras as Norkholders. My wife has been known to refer to them as Boulder-holders. Or, if she's going for a run, armoured boulder-holders.

Mr. Borough, that is the modern era...

Ah yes I was forgetting that the Punic Wars are still being debated in your house.
I think Morris was distinguishing the modern from the medieval. The date exact date of crossover is disputed, but I've always liked 1649.
1689 is more significant. Power passed irrevocably from monarch to parliament at that point.
I see your point but the Medieval period was over a long way before 1689. Dividing up history into chunks is a convenience for historians but inasmuch as it has value I would put the date as 1536.

That was the year when it was shown that the power of the Papacy could be ignored and ushered in a new style of thinking in which the Church did not predominate and which in due course led to 1689, the enlightenment and the industrial revolution.

The old dividing line of 1485 that I was taught at school was, I think, just a hangover from Tudor propoganda.
1517. Luther and the start of the Reformation.
But was the Reformation more important than the Renaissance as a dividing line ?

1492 Granada and the New World
    1453 Castillon and Constantinople

That's a good point: what does he think they can, or should, do to prevent the North Koreans from launching missiles? There seem to be several possible approaches:

*) Diplomacy (either with the NK's directly or through the Chinese). This has not worked so far.
*) Military - e.g. bombing of sites (and that won't end well without Chinese agreement).
*) Stand-off attack of missiles (think Air Borne Laser successor or equivalent).

The last of these seem to be the one that would appeal most to him, and it would help the US hone their ABM skills. Unfortunately the Chinese and Russians may not be happy.

Speaker looking slightly more vulnerable after new revelations about taking sides in the EU debate.

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/02/11/john-bercow-new-brexit-furore-neutrality-admitting-voted-remain/

The Speaker of the House of Commons has become involved in a fresh row about political bias after he admitted voting to stay in the European Union and said immigration into Britain was a good thing.

Parliamentary rules state: “The Speaker is the chief officer and highest authority of the House of Commons and must remain politically impartial at all times … therefore, on election the new Speaker must resign from their political party and remain separate from political issues even in retirement.”

    ...but I've always liked 1649.

Eewww! What a dull number - it is not even prime.
It is a lovely number; it is 4 squared followed by 7 squared, and its prime factors are 17 and 97, giving us the date of the battle of Cape St Vincent. Primeness is overrated.

    edit:vanilla doesn't do tags.
Primes are the root of all numbers. 1681 would be a better date, it is 41 squared. 41 is prime and also appears in the prime generating quadratic n^2 - n + 41 which generates primes for n=1..40.

Also 1681 was the expiry of the Exclusion Bill to prevent James, Duke of York (a converted catholic) from becoming king.

An excellent post, Mrs C! Combining as it does obscure knowledge with solid fact, it is within the highest traditions of PB (just needed a touch of pedantry to have hit the highest award level).
    Thank you :)

However, the use of number theory to decide the changeover date from Medieval to Modern periods looks a bit too much numerology to me.

Mr Llama I am shocked. How can anyone confuse mathematics with numerology?

All I have to say, is that 1649 is numerologically fertile ground and I feel you simply MUST concede the point or be labelled accordingly.....

I think Rebecca Long Bailey was excellent in that Brillo interview, and she dealt with him as well as anyone.
I don't share the politics, but it is snobbery of the most disgusting variety to suggest she isn't suitable just because she has a northern accent.
She looks credible to me for sure, unless you'd only be happy with a white southern male over the age of 50. If that is the case then you should just come out and say it.

So if Fillon is forced to withdraw and the LR do nominate Juppe now without a second primary it would likely be a Le Pen v Juppe runoff

Is it moving from they've no chance, to they might do quite well, to they could win, to they will win. They seem to have momentum. People have complained they are getting leaflet after leaflet from the party but what they have done is to insure people know the party is standing and who the candidate is, he has the advantage of being number 1 or 2 on the ballot paper and is completely local. Things are moving in Stoke.

Everybody is anti-Corbyn except Morning Star and Press TV. Corbyn absolutely hates some of the leading Guardian writers (from the footage in Vice doc), and they definitely aren't very keen on him either.

As always with the BBC, they have a particular world view. It isn't Labour or Tory, it is centre left metropolitan liberal. Postman Pat got massive grief from them when he dared to sack Professor Nutt(y) over his drug claims

That is true, nevertheless, as shorthand it is not very good, because it is misleading even if used in the exact context you have interpreted it, which I presume was his intention. It makes it sound like the subject is half a muslim somehow. Not a huge deal, wording was not great, but perhaps if space was an issue in a tweet go with GF so he be clearer with the muslim parent.

NORth Koreans seems like a perfectly good contraction for brevity in military briefing and report-writing.

Why do some people reach for "racism" by default? It's just a SJW comfort blanket.
    PRK is the proper "contraction".
PRK for "North Koreans" as a population? I don't see how that works.

Under 40 = inexperienced, is a legitimate potential criticism (though as pointed out, some young leaders have done well). The female 'criticism' is obviously not valid. But you've left out the many comments that she was crap. That might be right or wrong, I agree with others judging by a few poor interviews is not enough, but it's all very well to say others are wrong that she will be awful, or that the criticism is including several nonsense or sexist parts, but you cannot pretend people did not raise legitimate concerns as well (eg experience and ability).

I have a dispute that I have sent to IBAS,, it has been nearly 3 months and I still haven't heard!

I went into the Bookies to back Ricardo Quaresma to score first, £100 at 10/1 and £100 anytime at 4/1

The cashier phoned the bet and said the first goal price was now 17/2, but anytime was still 4/1, so I had £25 on first goal and £175 anytime

He scored the 5th goal of the game, but when I went to collect they said it should have been 3/1 and only offered £700 instead of £875.

I said if I had known it was 3/1 I wouldn't have had as much on, but if it had lost I would never have known I was on at the wrong price. Why stop at 3/1? They could have said it was 1/10!!
Hmm .... that rather sounds as if the bookie in question mixed up decimal odds of 4.0 with old money odds of 4/1. No palp there, simply an error on their part and they should pay up. The 100/1 odds originally quoted however was clearly a palp and having subsequently reduced their price to 17/2, that sounds as if the correct original price should probably have been 10/1.
Incidentally, as a matter of interest, does one have to pay a fee to get IBAS involved, win or lose? If I were you I'd be concerned by the 3 month delay .... did they at least issue you with an acknowledgement confirming their receipt of your complaint?
Yeah it was 10/1 originally not 100/1. Oddschecker prices were 10/1 and 4/1

I have receipt from IBAS and phoned to confirm they were on the case.. they said it might take a while, I have no idea why it should really. I phoned the bookies customer service, and even they agreed they should pay!

    IBAS is free
All - thanks for your advice. I suspect it might be a palp, but I'll investigate IBAS nonetheless. Maybe a lesson learned and happily, close to the end of the month, not such an expensive one.

In fairness, Nutt was sacked for making statements based on science. He said horse riding was more dangerous than taking ecstasy, which is clearly true. E is a very safe drug. Nutt said alcohol and nicotine were far more dangerous than E, which is again simply stating the truth.

I was talking about dislike of his politics as well, which is the third strand there, it isn't just about whether he's up to the job or his conduct.

Many say he is not up to the job but may like him as a person and his politics. Some few may think him up to the job, like his politics and think like him as a man. Others don't think he'd up to the job, don't like his politics but think as a person he is ok.

You're right that few will dislike him as a person, in addition to disliking his politics and thinking he'd not up to the job. But that doesn't mean they don't dislike him, or that they are being closed minded if they do. I dislike him as a leader, but outside the occasional outburst which everyone has now and then, he seems like a pleasant, agreeable sort.

Dislike is also not the same as hatred. Hatred of a political opponent in a system like ours is rarely justified. Dislike is much milder and perfectly acceptable. Someone hating Labour or the Tories is an idiot, in my view, but dislike, even strong dislike of their ideological positioning (such that it exists)? Sure.

Nutt’s views are actually, in my experience anyway, quite widely held among his peers. However there’s a knee-jerk reaction to such views in most political circles, terrified of the Daily Heil and the like.

The attempted swiftboating of Lewis doesn't impress me, though. If he was making promotional videos they were presumably promoting the TA and presumably involved filming the TA doing military sort of stuff. To say he wouldnt usually end up in a firefight misses the point because conventional planned firefights don't usually involve a danger of shooting civilians. For TA themed wankery in the political sphere he doesn't hold a candle to David SAS Davis, on this evidence.
