Partly because far fewer of their MPs have died in office the Tories have not faced many by-elections since returning to power in 2010. They lost to UKIP in Clacton and Rochester but held on in June 2014 in Newark.
Looking at how Hillary is clearly under performing against expectations, would the democrats actually have been better off going with Bernie?
Absolutely. Anyone but Hillary or Donald would be in line for a landslide victory.
I'm not so sure.
The media environment in the US is brutal - Bernie would have been absolutely crucified from the moment he won the nomination, the GOP would have rallied around trump much quicker - and the electoral map would have looked quite different.
Trump less competitive in the rust belt, more competitive in the moderately wealthy blue states.
Surburban America's version of Worcester woman would go Trump vs. Bernie.
Resuming the discussion of the Swiss deal from the last thread: MaxPB is certainly right that the SVP will get 100K signautres against it (it's not hard to get 100K there), but the vote wouldn't be for a few years and I very much doubt if it would succeed in stopping the proposal. The previous SVP initiative that started the issue only got 50.3% and there has been non-stop coverage in the Swiss media ever since about how problematic it was.
I'm sure the SVP will get more votes, though. They have the same problem as the AfD, Front National, Sweden Democrats, and others - they are pretty good at getting 20-30%, but over 50% of the electorate hate them with a passion, so they never find allies. The exception is in Denmark, where the Danish People's Party went out of its way to be centrist on everything except immigration, and is now tolerated as a partner by the centre-right.

Right now, she's going Clinton vs. Trump.
Yes, but all the Democrats and a fair number of swing voters would have got behind the candidate in a way that they're not doing with Hillary.
The Penrith By election of 1983 might be the most worrying predent for Tories. Whitelaw won the seat with a huge majority in June that year , but after his elevation to the Lords the Tories only held on by a few hundred at the by election.
So Trump +5% in a new Rasmussen poll (well, quite) and down to +2% in the LA tracking poll. Seems some post-collapse swing back under way.
This race - so called - will be neck and neck until Trump passes the post first; then, all hell will break loose with a concentrated attempt to discredit The Donald before inauguration day.

I think there's already been a concerted attempt to discredit Donald Trump. And I'm pretty sure there's been a similar attempt to discredit Hillary Clinton.
Trump's Ohio campaign chair: Obama caused racism in Ohio
All these police shootings of black people are happening on Obama's watch?
The last one was black on black. However it can't be denied that Obama pushed the racism button to get elected.
Isn't the big driver here that police have started wearing bodycams, and there have been a lot of cases where the videos have not - in any way - matched what the officer said. Which rather leads to the question as to how many (mostly black) people have been jailed or shot on the evidence of the words of police officers that doesn't necessarily tie with the actualite.
(Of course, it's not news when the officer's account matches the bodycam. So, we don't get to see that most of the time they match.)
Looking at how Hillary is clearly under performing against expectations, would the democrats actually have been better off going with Bernie?
Absolutely. Anyone but Hillary or Donald would be in line for a landslide victory.

I agree. Hillary Clinton is a consummate machine politician with loads of experience but a fatal weakness, for a politician, of being unable to fake sincerity. Donald Trump on the other hand has no problems in that regard and is a seasoned media operator and has seen off a raft of more plausible Republican contenders, but appears to be completely unsuited for the job. In a nutshell experience versus media skills. For a presidential election, that's pretty much where it's at.
Boris Johnson only campaigned to leave the EU to set himself up as the next Conservative leader, Alan Duncan said in the run-up to the June's referendum.
Mr Duncan said he believed the now foreign secretary, who is his boss, wanted to lose narrowly and become the "heir apparent" to David Cameron.
As far as Witney is concerned, it's going to be a mountain for any party to displace the incumbent Conservatives. When Tony Blair stood down in Sedgefield, the resulting by-election saw the Labour vote drop by about a quarter with the LDs the main but by no means the sole beneficiaries.
A similar drop would take the Conservative vote back to 45% which is what Cameron won at his first election in 2001 so that seems reasonable.
Back then, a strong Labour were clear second in front of the LDs with the two parties hovering up about 48% between them leaving little for other candidates.
Given UKIP will be in the mix along with the Greens and others, it seems less likely a single candidate will be able to take the bulk of the 55% non-Conservative vote and achieve something akin to a Romsey in 2001 where the Conservative vote fell only slightly but the Labour vote collapsed to the LDs allowing Sandra Gidley to win the seat.
We'll know in just over four weeks but it's vital for the LDs or another party to establish themselves clearly and credibly as the main alternative to squeeze out the other parties.
My prediction as things stand is that things will go OKish for Trump early in the night winning Ohio more comfortably than predicted, winning Florida failing in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Hampshire (losing here pretty badly) gaining one EC vote in Maine, in the end not really close in Michigan due to him driving higher turnout in the cities, winning Iowa pretty easily then everything gets shat on by California.
"As a devout Remainer, I was disturbed by the EU referendum result. But one silver lining is seeing Priti Patel running the Department for International Development (Dfid). She is an uncompromising character who has not shied away from criticising Britain’s absurd aid giveaway, even once calling for closure of the ministry she now runs.
She was right then and is right now. Dfid struts around like an offshoot of the charity sector, rather than an arm of government, and should be folded back into the Foreign Office...
Ms Patel seems prepared to take them on. Sources say she is starting by trying to shift attitudes, admitting that too much aid is spent on the wrong things or does not reach the world’s poor and needy. I have seen this countless times on three different continents.
And who is she? What has she done to be photographed holding an item of confectionery with HRC? On whose behalf was that photo released, Trump or Clinton?

There is a scenario which follows the twist in "Witness for the Prosecution".
Boris, having established his credentials as the person who won the referendum for Leave, says, having now closely examined all the options, he has concluded that staying in the EU is the best option after all.
He'd only do this when May is in deep trouble up Brexit Creek with tumbling polling numbers for her and the party. It would destabilse her and be his route to the leadership if enough MPs and membership supported him.
And who is she? What has she done to be photographed holding an item of confectionery with HRC? On whose behalf was that photo released, Trump or Clinton?

If it was from Trump, some frightful lefty feminist on Twitter would claim he was endorsing FGM.
Please advise me. For those of us that consider that the conduct of the Government of Israel towards the majority of the population living within the borders it continues to effectively control has been repugnant, at least in the period since the rejection of the Oslo peace accord, is there any way of expressing that repugnance here without causing you to parrot the charge of "antisemitism" so routinely made by the Government of Israel to try and hide its shortcomings?
And who is she? What has she done to be photographed holding an item of confectionery with HRC? On whose behalf was that photo released, Trump or Clinton?
An actress. She was in Kick Ass.
Thank you, Mr. Max. Never heard of her or the play/film you mention. Mind you, I had not previously heard of Angelina Jolie, a woman whose impending divorce seems to be making the front pages, buggered if I know why.
Anyway, does anyone know why it should be thought that releasing that photo of HRC with La Moretz would be a good idea? I have seen three day old stiffs look better than Clinton does in that photo.

Holywood is no loss. Mary Berry would have been.
Not to wish her ill but she is 81 and the series need to have a replacement in mind. That said Love productions/C4 have conducted one of the most inept commercial contractual changes in media land.

Well you could try posting something on the lines of, "I think the conduct of the government(s) is Israel is repugnant because ....". That should do the job.

Digging a little deeper, as it were, into Sweden's unexpected silver medal, the plaque at Ytterby quarry is now (somewhere in the lower reaches) on my bucket list, should I ever visit Stockholm:

I think it's a lovely expression. So much better than something like 'get off with'.
