PS I don't mind authorities starting 'modern record' series, but we should not forget those who jumped higher just because it was an old record. King's Own's jump is not disputed, AFIK - it just was not done at an official event.

They asked Leave voters what the British government should prioritise when negotiating withdrawal - staying in the single market or restricting freedom of movement (page 4), and they got figures of 42% and 56%. Ask a silly question, get a silly answer. If they'd asked them "do you think the most important aim for British negotiators should be to restrict immigration?" they'd probably have had 80%+ saying "yes". As for territorial waters, well sure, that's the main issue for some British fishermen.

A spokesman for Unite said that Mr McCluskey was attending a private event which was not paid for by the union.

Arsenal starting the season in typical Arsenal fashion...lovely football in the opening half, should be 2-0 up at half time, let in injury time equalizer and now 3-1 down.

"With this, we encourage you to make your lower animals work even harder and eat even less! To a greater Animal Farm! For peace and plenty under pig rule!"
Okay, just realised that last night's stayawakeathon for the Olympics is going to be every night this week! 100m final is scheduled for 02:25 UK time, that's after sunrise in the sandpit. To wake up at 5:25am for 10 seconds, or to record it and watch in the morning at a reasonable hour?

They certainly know how to look after themselves, only the best Monte Carlo hotels for the workers!
I wonder who picked up the tab for that, one thing for certain is that he won't be paying it himself.
Not paid for by the union leaves the door open for all sorts of things doesn't it. If he was paying from his own pocket, surely they would say so.
To be fair, it doesn't say he was actually staying in the hotel, only that he was in the bar there. Maybe he stayed elsewhere, in one of the many cheap hotels in the very cheap city that is Monaco!

Oh, and Bolt is 1.4 on Betfair to win the 100m, surely that's a no-brainier of a bet?

You can stay pretty cheaply in Nice or Villefranche, and get the train into Monaco.

I hate betting on individuals, it's why I stay away from boxing despite there being masses of money to be made given how dull the average boxing fan is (if you dispute this consider that people pair money to see Audrey Harrison fight Haye). One tight hamstring later and a sure thing turns into a certain loss.

Yeah, it would be the chance of an injury or a false start that would do for the bet - or someone else having the run of their life and Bolt having a bad day at the office.
IIRC Smith had Bronze in Beijing as he had the same score as the silver finisher but with a lower difficulty on his routine, then the same thing happened in London, with the same score as the Gold medal winner.
Oh thats crap...he has to do all the medal stuff before he does the next event in one hour. I can imagine all that emotion etc, the last thing you want, when you just want to focus on next event.

Only half way through, what next PR disaster can befall Rio before the end.
The PR disaster to end all PR disasters would be drugs cheat Justin Gatlin winning the 100m. Once again athletics depends on Bolt to save it from its own stupidity.

On thread. Teresa must be pleased, working out perfectly. Fox will surely not last.. One down two or three more to commit political hari kari and job done.
Say what you will about the legacy of the London Games from a more casual standpoint, but it's clear that winning that bid back in 2005 continues to pay dividends for our athletes. Everything feels so much more professional than it did previously and I do think that we are starting to see successes in areas we were never considered to be leaders in (eg gymnastics, diving) because London did inspire young athletes.
This is getting truly unbelievable. By the end of the night we might be seriously challenging China for second.
Where we are now
1 United States 24 18 18 60
2 China 13 11 17 41
3 Great Britain 11 13 7 31
Germany is only one gold medal from being trounced by Russia for 4th
There's no way we can come second, surely?
They had 38 Gold in 2012 for second place, 51 Gold for first in 2008, and the USA second on 36 Gold. Presumably we'd need to triple our current tally to be confident of a chance for second (29 for third last time, but it was a comfortable third), and even with a few unexpected ones, we've dropped a few chances too.
I think the athletics is where the big disappointment is. Excluding Mr Mobot and the two other s that got medals, we aren't competitive in lots and lots of events. Its one thing not winning medals, but lots of event we don't even have a top 8 person....where as like the swimming so many finals and a number of 4ths.
We have tradition in 100m -> 1500m and we will be very very lucky to get anybody in the 100m mens final, 200m Gemilli is potentially good but not really on form, 400m the guy was a total shock to get in and won't feature. 800m and 1500m are total busts.

We'd no athletes in several events - javelin springs to mind - one in pole vault. Don't recall any in hammer either.

Absolutely, and isn't it great to watch
The lottery funding program has been the key to it, paying for athletes, coaches, facilities and equipment over the many years required to build up to the success we saw in London and continue to see in Rio. It's a huge contrast to the short termism we often criticise Britain for.

I've really noticed how many competitors in their 30s mentioned Lottery funding as being key back in Major's day. It's made a huge difference - I can't imagine not playing the Lottery myself - it's harmless and worthy fun.
