RISE poses a problem for an SNP that has scaled the heights of Scottish politics by demonising its opponents as Tories and traitors. This schtick doesn’t work with RISE, which is authentically radical on public policy and the constitution. After stirring the disaffected during the referendum with airy promises of untold national wealth and social utopia, the Nationalists find themselves having to govern in prose again. Unavoidable cuts, a funding crisis in local government, and failing health targets are just some of the bumps on the road ahead.
A socialist challenger makes life uncomfortable for the SNP, which talks left but walks centre. Until now, warm words about land reform, fracking, and public sector procurement have appeased the grassroots but a new party with a bolder agenda would pose awkward questions.
SNP loyalists don’t quite know how to handle RISE so have gone with their strengths and lashed out. (Upon hearing that there were other parties, GA Ponsonby wept that he had not yet denounced them.) Lending your second vote to one of the smaller parties, they warn darkly, will only help more Unionists escape the justice of the Scottish people. Crucially for a political strategy devised by and for furious middle aged men who spend their evenings in their Y-fronts typing “BIAS!!!!” under every Herald article, it has a hashtag. #BothVotesSNP is where frustrated extremism meets low-level neddery. It's as if residents of The Scheme joined ISIS but stuck to handing out leaflets down the precinct on Saturday afternoons instead of flying out to Raqqa.
Bush was likeable and had charisma and preached compassion for the poor and made great efforts to reach out to Hispanics and minorities to reflect America's future, Trump makes bombastic speeches preaching hate and alienating the very minorities who the GOP needs to win back. This election was a very winnable one for the GOP, Hillary was a very beatable candidate, she will be crossing her fingers and praying Trump is her opponent, Clinton-Castro would lock up the female and Hispanic vote, no matter how many angry white men Trump has behind him!
Trump appeals to the hispanic vote actually. And he has a certain chutzpah that has got some influential black people onside too.
I worked in UK car manufacturing for the best part of 25 years.
I just point out bollocks when it's being posted if you don't liked being called out stop posting crap.
What is your assessment of our car manufacturing prospects? (If it's something you can express in a few words. I realise it could take a book to answer fully.)
We'll peak out about 1,8 million cars mostly high value luxury marques. Successful cos like JLR are already opening plants overseas so that's where they'll shift more production.
But the industry itself will be much more successful than in 1972 as the cars are profitable and desirable. It could be even more so if we could improve the supply chain and engineering infrastructure but the HMG has no real appetitie to do this.
Thanks.
What would HMG need to do specifically? (I don't want to bug you about it. Is there somewhere I can read up on this?)
I am sure [Corbyn] is an absolutely public-spirited, well-meaning, nice individual with all sorts of moral values that perhaps I don’t have.
But actually that’s not what you want from a politician. What you want actually is judgement, discernment, you want understanding and you actually want education

it would actually need to have a committed proigramme to :
maybe bring more models to the uk with an emphasis seriously I'd say on vans. We have a structural deficit of about 250,000 vehicles because we let all the van plants close down bar GM in Luton
It would need to make a conscious effort to encourage reshoring of components in the supply chain which means expanding engineering graduates at unis and making capital investment easier
It would need to have a long term commitment which involves nursing a cyclical sector through its downturn. Heres Osborne's current commitment to the Manufacturing advisory service
Bush was likeable and had charisma and preached compassion for the poor and made great efforts to reach out to Hispanics and minorities to reflect America's future
That's true. Post 9/11 and Iraq we have a different impression of W, and I don't think he ever played well in Europe, but he was a decent candidate in 2000. (One can't say exactly a strong candidate. He did kind-of lose to Al Gore.)
Yes, he may not have won in Europe but he knew how to win in the States and build the coalition the GOP needed to win in the 21st century, the best Trump can do is rebuild the coalition which would have enabled the GOP to win in the middle of the 20th century!
He's been consistent on the economic front for as long as I've been on PB.
In fact I remember in 2011/12 he was defending Osborne from the likes of IOS, Tim, and Surby when they were complaining about Osborne's economic management and pointing our their economic record and the legacy they bequeathed Ireland's finest heir to a Baronetcy.
Re. the changing of minds question much earlier in the thread, one of the reasons I value PB so much is because the discussions help me to make my mind up in the first place.
I guess that's going from a Don't Know to an opinion.

You;re dates are wrong Mr Eagles.
I defended Osborne up to 2011 on the grounds he needed some time to settle in, see the books and announce what he was going to do. Likewise because he wasn't Gordon Brown.
In 2011 he chickened out on reform and ever since Ive been on his case. As Ive pointed out reform needs to talk place early in a Parlt so that the benefits outweigh the short term pains but start to feed through in time for the next election.
GO has simply taken the easy way out and aped Brown, and he's doing exactly the same in this session.

The reason I ask is that I hear people (from the left and the right) say airily that we should "rebalance" the economy towards manufacturing and I'm sceptical that they really have a plan to do it. The things you mention will take several years to take effect. It would need a commitment over the life of two Parliaments, maybe three.

there isn't a plan
and yes it will take 2-3 Parlts which is why I criticise HMG who to date haven't even started.
Glen OHara Here's some more gloom for you: if another recession, the UK is much, much worse equipped to fight back in policy terms than in 2007.
@PlatoSays Much higher debt and deficit in public sector, no room to cut interest rates, QE alr ramped up.
Certainly there is no ammunition on the monetary side (e.g. interest rates), although I suppose we could go into the negative rate adventure and thereby force banks not to hoard money. More QE might also be brought to bear. Osborne's deficit plan would be in tatters if we do have another serious recession.
Record UK car production announced today. The economic cycle is inevitable. A recession is 2 quarters of negative growth. This is not necessarily the same as a crash which wipes about 7% of the economic capacity of the country, bankrupts its banks and leaves a deficit of £160bn and a devastated tax base...
UK record was in the 1970s,
He cannot be expected to go back more than a day Alan.
Yo malc. how's things ?
Haven't caught up with you for a while, hope you had a good break and are getting in the malt for Burns Night.
Hello Alan, yes all well, plenty of supplies and haggis and neeps as well. I am still toiling , living in hope of big payoff but not much chance of either payoff or big way things are going. Need to start winding down. Hope you and family are well.
You're in the wrong bit of your employer, my missus is being offered payoffs about once every 6 months.
We have people go, not as many as other areas , but they just laugh at me asking.
LOL your PBC rating is too high !
Loaf about and tell them to do their own work, you'll soon get it down :-)
That is what the wife says as well. I need to start putting the feet up.
A colleague of the wife wants to go in the next 12 months and has been managing his rating downwards for 2 years so he doesn't get blocked.
Is that how Ludlow's finest refer to their consorts? Why not go totally Wheeltappers and Shunters and try 'ball and chain' ?

don't get me started on the mother in law , it will be non stop Les Dawson
Pots and kettles is what comes to mind when you accuse anyone else of unthinking loyalty to the SNP. You Scot P look at everything through the prism of what can damage or hurt the national/SNP cause in Scotland. Complaining about others who look through the prism of what can benefit this cause is heavily laced with unconscious irony.
It is even more amusing that on all available evidence they seem to be winning!
