    There is a case for saying that Britain ought to have supported the Confederacy in the US civil war (more than turning a blind eye to The Alabama), in return for the abolition of slavery in the south of course. It would have meant that the USA would have been sandwiched between two British spheres of influence, and would have not developed as it has, saving the world from a great deal of misery. It was all down hill from there really.
