@Markfergusonuk: Someone told me about Harriet Harman’s Pink Bus a month ago. I thought they were winding me up. It turns out it was not, in fact, a wind up
That shade of pink is known as 'Patronising'.
Odd that Labour choose to drive a wedge between the sexes, rather than treat everyone as equals.

It's Labour's attempt to import the Republican war on women strategy from the Democrats in the US to here.
I'm looking forward to the Pink Persuader being parked outside mosques as the Labour Lassies go spreading the message about how FGM is a great evil that should be stamped out in the UK.....
What have you, Socrates et al have against Muslims? It is pathological. There is nothing in Islam about FGM. 99% of Muslims do not practice it. In only parts of the Horn of Africa is this vile thing practised by members of all religions.
Regarding Male circumcision, yes it is recommended in Islam and 99.9% probably practice it. But then, so do Jews. Somehow, I am sure you would not write about their practices. Also, more than 50% of the US population and, until recently, male members of our Royal family.
You appear to be overlooking Egypt (91%) Guinea (96%) Sudan (88%) Mali (89%) and in fact the bulk of North Africa plus Yemen totalling 30 countries or so. The highest total number of cases in a population by some margin is Egypt (27m+ cases)
Sunni Islam views the practise of FGM as either obligatory or acceptable depending on which exact school you adhere to, so you would be inaccurate to say its not related to religion, although you are partly right to say other religions practise it as well, although in most countries rather less often.
Because it has nothing to do with Islam. Show me one reference to FGM in the Quran.
There is no mention in the Qur'an of women being compelled to wear head scarves or Burka's, which must be why you never see it.
I see headscarves in Orthodox countries a lot. Of course ethnicity, and therefore culture, affects how you interpret a religion, criticism of Islam seems to derive from a combination of ignorance and wishful thinking.
"Two Indonesian nationwide studies in 2003 and 2010 found over 80% of the cases sampled involved cutting, typically of newborns through the age of 9. The surveys demonstrated that circumcision among girls and boys is a universal practice in the study sites, in all of which Islam was the primary religion."
Female genital mutilation is practiced among some Pakistani communities.Gibeau reports, for example, FGM is widespread in Bohra Muslims of Pakistan. The Sheedi Muslim community of Pakistan, considered to be of Arab-African origins, practice FGM. The practice is also found in Muslim communities near Pakistan's Iran-Balochistan border
"Estimates suggest 90% of females in the Ismaili Shia Muslim Bohra community in India undergo the trauma"
However in Nigeria...
"A 2008 demographic survey found 30% of all Nigerian women have been subjected to FGM. FGM is prevalent in 31% of Catholics, 27% of Protestant and 7% of Muslim women."
I am very happy for the Labour Lassies to go to those black churches that operate in our inner cities to ensure that they are not continuing with the practice of FGM on this country. But there is an issue here. Black women Christians are generally easier to reach in the community day to day. Islam is a patriarchal society, where women are harder to reach. If you want to stop FGM continuing in our communities, you have to go through the men. Which means community leaders, often via the mosques. It is just the way it is.
And I smile at the notion that I come at this from a kipper perspective.... As anyone who has read my posts over recent months, I am far from a friend of the kippers and their lunacy that a few years of Ed Miliband is just what Britain needs to see the Euro-sceptic light.
And I have travelled to and done business in more Muslim countries than most on here. Pakistan. Bangladesh. Saudi. Algeria. Turkmenistan. Yemen. Somalia. To name a few. Many folks here holidayed at them tourist destinations?

Fail.
It will only be a fail if Tories fail to rise to the bait.
I still don't think this question gets to the nub of tactical voting. I'd prefer something like:
(a) regular voting intention q (b) if all the main parties had an equal chance in your seat, which would you vote for? (c) if all the main parties had an equal chance in the country, which would you vote for?
You can vote for Labour because you are profoundly anti-Tory; that in itself doesn't make it a tactical vote. It's a tactical vote if you really rather vote Green.
Of course you can overcook it - if you're a Conservative in West Aberdeen & Kincardine then voting Lib Dem could let the SNP in (There is no way to know which is the better "tactical" vote here right now).
Until May 8th we are pretty uncertain which is the best placed party to tactically vote for in many seats!
That knowledge may be useful if there is a swift second election though.
Feeling in a contrarian mood this morning so is it possible that we might see less tactical voting in 2015 than we did in 2010?
I do think that some Labour supporters who have lent their votes to the Lib Dems before to keep out the tories feel betrayed and will vote Labour this time when Labour does not have a chance (eg in the south west and in the south generally). Result a less efficient Labour vote.
I also think that the rise of UKIP means (a) those naturally
I think the Conservatives could get UKIP down to 11% or so, but that's as good as it gets.
WRT austerity, people don't want austerity without end. But, globalisation probably means austerity without end.
My point is more that globalisation holds real wages down for most Western employees, ships mid-tier jobs overseas, and redistributes wealth upwards.
This is a bit remiscent of the arguments against free-trade and imperial preference in the 19th Century, though. It's probably truer to say that it decreases inequality between countries, but increases it within them, excepting that absolute poverty worldwide has decreased remarkably over the last 25 years.
Globalisation also reduces the cost of manufactured goods: almost everyone can afford a mobile phone, and televisions are now ridiculously cheap and power efficient. Even if globalisation didn't occur, technological development would result in many of the effects you cite.
I don't think isolationism or anti-globalisation would make us any wealthier, in fact I fear it'd do the opposite. My objection is the belief you must have free movements of people to go with that of goods and services.
I think the government can prepare the UK for the future best by prioritising education, science and universities, and accepting and building upon our relative strengths in financial services, pharmaceuticals, new tech, multimedia and tourism.
I should have clarified. For most people *in Western countries* it has these adverse impacts. Obviously, globalisation is very good news for people in low income countries, who can leave behind a medieval standard of living.
I don't think protectionism would help Westerners either, as it would simply drive up the cost of goods and services. Nor would it be right to shut people out of the global economy who earn £2,000 p.a. to try and help people who earn 10 times as much.
Sean F - fair points. Busy day at work today but would be good to explore further later.
There’s a few things in life that really get my hackles up.
People standing on the wrong side of escalators. Kim Kardashian. And the assumption that girls only like (cutesy, unintimidating, slightly babyish) pink.
So when I saw Labour’s women’s bus… my heart sank.
For the next three months, some of the party’s most impressive female minds will be travelling around the country drumming up support in a 17-seater mini bus. That happens to look like the lovechild of Barbie and Sheila’s Wheels.

A Telegraph writer doesn't like an element of Labour's campaign! Fancy that!
This morning is yett again dominated by a Tory media obsession that frankly leaves the rest of us bemused.
Just reading LabourList (I also read ConservativeHome, the LibDems (occasionally) and the SNP sites) and came across this from Conor Pope: People are also up in arms about about a pink minibus today. Labour have launched a 'Woman-to-Woman' campaign to try and reach out to the nine million women who did not vote in 2010. As part of it, Harriet Harman, Gloria De Piero and Lucy Powell will drive around the country in a battlebus. There's just one problem: it's pink. Now, far be it from me to say I don't care, but I will point out that the entire colour scheme for Labour conference last year was also pink.
One day the Telegraph might just hire a journalist (see Private Eye passim) instead of sacking them all so that the editor can get his bonus.

But perhaps with Ed, Ed & Eddy in charge it could be

And another spectacular example of news mismanagement by Labour (Lucy Powell strikes again)
On topic, with Tory-Orange bookers, possibly with Orange Order back-up,likely to emerge as favourite why should any voter of progressive opinion vote for a choice of Tory when they are about to form the next government together in another LD/Tory coalition. Many in LD/con marginals are more likely to stick to voting Labour,Green or even Ukip, as it makes not a jot of difference to the formation of another Con-Dem government.

Hey Mike,
Her politics are quite left wing but... High Speed 2 is threatening to run right through our stable yard, that was the key issue - and locally the seat is a Labour (Well ahead) UKIP 2nd with the rest nowhere. Nationally she'd see it as a vote for Farage though who she doesn't really like, but on a local level it's ok...
You mean like Tories have become more dependent on hedge funds. Except the Union funds are legitimate funds from tax paying members, whereas hedge funds.............
Are investment operations which invest billions of pounds in British business, and pay for quite a large chunk of the sweeties that Labour wants to throw more money at. Drive them offshore and see what happens to the NHS.
Heard that bilge before !
The super-rich between them pay for the NHS.
I say milk them for a better NHS (45% top tax rates now versus 40% during 13 years bar a month of Labour).
You say drive them abroad - to create an NHS funding crisis.
Why do the Left want to kill the NHS?
To be fair killing the NHS would be better than killing the patients which they seemed so good at last time they were in power.
I'm looking forward to the Pink Persuader being parked outside mosques as the Labour Lassies go spreading the message about how FGM is a great evil that should be stamped out in the UK.....

Pull your head out of your ass and you might find your vision gets less obstructed.
According to a survey in the year 2000, a study found that 97% of the country's population still practiced FGM; a 2005 study found that over 95% of Egyptian women have undergone some form of FGM

There should be a Green candidate for her to vote for given the crowdfunder.
Gruenbaum has emphasized that followers of Islam – “have at times practised female circumcision and consider their practices sanctioned, or at least not prohibited, by God.” Despite the fact that FGM/C predates the birth of Islam and is not mandated by religious scriptures, the belief that it is a religious requirement contributes to the continuation of the practice in a number of settings. - UNICEF, 2013

Not much interest in my constituency (South West Wiltshire, 10k Con maj), but the neighbouring one of Chippenham looks set to change hands this year (LD maj 2.5k). The MP Duncan Hames (married to Jo Swinson) became an MP in 2010 so is unlikely to have a huge personal following.
He beat "The Black Farmer" (Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones) last time and is up this time against a Michelle Donelan who I don't know a great deal about. I've had a quick glance at her website and she seems fairly normal. I doubt there'll be much tactical voting for or against her - last time Lab got 3,600 votes UKIP 1,800 - so I'll be surprised if Hames can overcome the national Lib Dem collapse.
Shadsy has Con 8/15, LD 6/4, UKIP 20/1, Lab & Green 100/1

Absolutely, its a cultural practise that is seen as obligatory by some branches of Sunni Islam, but also exists in other religons as I stated in my original reply before surbiton started ranting. There are many cultural practises that have been subsumed by religions all over the world (Eostre etc) but many don't involve mutilating children.
@MArqueeMark I have you down as voting Conservative, even if your seat was a straight UKIP-Labour fight I still think you'd vote Conservative.
Practical terms, not an issue as I get to vote Tory for Dr Sarah Wollaston, who as a paid up member ofthe awkward squad happily sits with my politics (blue with occasional anarchist tendencies).
If I was in a straight Labour/Ukip fight, I would in this election still vote Tory as 1) I can't stand Farage but more importantly 2) if it comes down to a minority rule as we mostly expect, then the more votes the blues have, the greater their legitimacy to continue in Govt.

I think that one effect of globalisation is that it is undermining the tax base.
This is often said, but it really isn't true. Tax revenues as a percentage of GDP have not fallen particularly in the last couple of decades. See Chart 1.1 on page 12 here:

Hasn't raised my hackles, the pathetic attempt by the left to create a division in society that doesn't exist has. All stereotypes are based on truisms, as the toy industry would attest girls love pink.
Are girls genetically predisposed to like pink, or do we teach them to love it? If we surround our children with pink everything, is it surprising that the link between being a girl and liking pink is reinforced? Toy manufactures are partly to blame but partly just following the trend. Girls love pink, therefore we sell pink things, thus contributing to the cycle.
We are complicit in the pinkification of our girls. And I don't just mean the colour. Studies have been done that show we just don't push our girls or let them take the same risks as we do with our boys; even parents who otherwise attempt to ignore gender stereotypes are guilty of these biases.

Beyond satire, and scientifically wrong. Try looking up Sacha Baron Cohen's brother and his research.

Good morning, everyone. Just a few days until the second test. There's only four days or so between that and the third test (both are at the same venue).

In a letter to the Prime Minister, the shadow work and pensions secretary warned the country cannot afford leaving people ‘stuck on benefits for years on end’.

So nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with the people.

Some don't. Some Christians in the same region also believe it is obligatory.
Still taking the most and primitive followers of a religion and arbitrarily deciding they exemplify that religion is stupid.

'Meanwhile, the Sun reports that Labour’s American adviser David Axelrod, who is bringing out a new book, has said he is “done” with campaigning for elections.'
Money well spent. Not.
David. Axelrod, who did the seemingly impossible of getting a black guy in the White House, knows when heis beaten.
"Ed Miliband? That guy will never be Prime Minister...."
But not quite as incompetent as the party being so anti-EU which, if they look like winning, will really put the wind up business.
We are fine. Rich business men are willing to pay 17grand to go shoe shopping with Theresa May.

Welcome Mr Gent!
I suspect that the Labour vote in Chippenham is so low precisely because the Lib Dems have squeezed it dry of tactical votes. This is one of the things that makes tactical voting hard to analyse.
You would expect the Tories to take Chippenham on a lower share of the vote than they achieved in 2010, maybe as low as 30-35%, as the Liberal Democrat vote collapses even faster. However, there has been an influx of at least one voter from the Labour stronghold of Streatham to the constituency, and this may change the political character of the seat entirely!

Surely risk-taking behaviour is directly linked with testosterone (and brain chemistry, particularly that of male teens), which is higher in boys than in girls (at least the boys' bell curve is shifted significantly to the right of the girls'), so while tolerance for permitting it may be cultural, the impulse to partake has to be at very least primarily biological.

I believe I said as much several times, however attempts to say that religion doesn't play a role in this practise are equally fatuous. Its a cultural practise that has been adopted by religions, however the fact remains that the vast majority of FGM survivors are Muslim, and so it is the view of their faith that matters, and it is at best mixed, there have been fatwas issued against it, but other clerics are been either equivocal or even in favour, the current view appears to be

Just did a little research on Ms Donelan.. She spoke at the Tory conference at an even younger age than Hague, she's 29 - so 24 when she stood for a S.Yorks seat (Wentworth & Dearne) in 2005 (new seat so hard to compare her performance to her predecessor). She's not local, she comes from Cheshire.

Who cares, seriously ? Does it actually matter a damn or is it just a false dividing line for people to bang a drum about. Men and women are different, people need to get over it, otherwise lets have the men vs women rugby, or mixed singles finals at Wimbledon. Lefties need to get over this "equality of outcome" idiocy, its not possible, it wont happen, and it makes you look stupid, equality of opportunity is what matters.

Agreed entirely.
My daughter is approaching her first birthday, born last March. She loves pink already and almost assumes that anything pink is hers. That could be because we painted her room pink before she was born, bought her pink bottles and my wife knitted her a pink blanket etc, etc
But does it matter why? It could have been that she loved blue or red, but either way she is happy. My daughter is a happy and healthy child who is developing nicely and that's all that matters to me. I don't believe my wife and I are bad parents just because our happy daughter likes pink toys.
Fascinating on how government has changed, on Cameron, on Greece, on the NHS and education.
And absolutely devastating in regard to Blair:
New Labour had been in about a fortnight, and one of the dramatic things that had been done had been to announce the independence of the Bank of England, and this very senior civil servant, upon getting wind this was coming, asked Tony Blair, ‘Shouldn’t we put this on the agenda for Cabinet?’ To which Tony replied: ‘What for? What’s it got to do with them?’
“And I was also told on very good authority that the very first Cabinet meeting that Tony ran, the only item on the agenda was Alastair Campbell briefing members of the Cabinet on the line to take on current topics for next week. Because of course Tony had never been in a government before.

If you say so, I would argue that a significant chunk of the Tory right, Dan Hannan etc, are only staying with the party at the moment because of the referendum promise. True, although I am not sure how their colour preference affects this outcome ... ?
False Flag, one study does not a complete picture make. Sure some studies have shown a preference for cars in boys and dolls in girls (even in Monkeys), but others have been less clear cut, and what is not clear from any of them is the cause: is it genetic or environmental or both.
To dismis any talk of environmental influences, seemingly off the back of one study is "beyond satire" and "not scientific".

There are all sorts of things that prevent us maximising our GDP. People lead unhealthy lifestyles. Some people prefer leisure to hard work . Lots of women prefer to leave the workplace, or work part-time, when they have children. But, so long as people are content with this, I see no real problem.

Odd that Labour choose to drive a wedge between the sexes, rather than treat everyone as equals.

You can vote for Labour because you are profoundly anti-Tory; that in itself doesn't make it a tactical vote. It's a tactical vote if you really rather vote Green.
That knowledge may be useful if there is a swift second election though.
This morning is yett again dominated by a Tory media obsession that frankly leaves the rest of us bemused. A Telegraph writer doesn't like an element of Labour's campaign! Fancy that!

People are also up in arms about about a pink minibus today. Labour have launched a 'Woman-to-Woman' campaign to try and reach out to the nine million women who did not vote in 2010. Now, far be it from me to say I don't care, but I will point out that the entire colour scheme for Labour conference last year was also pink.

Nothing wrong with pink as a colour, or as a theme for a conference, or as a shirt (I'm wearing a pink shirt right now). What's raised hackles is the stereotype that all women love pink, and therefore it's the only choice for a campaign targetting women.

People are also up in arms about about a pink minibus today. Labour have launched a 'Woman-to-Woman' campaign to try and reach out to the nine million women who did not vote in 2010. As part of it, Harriet Harman, Gloria De Piero and Lucy Powell will drive around the country in a battlebus. There's just one problem: it's pink. Now, far be it from me to say I don't care, but I will point out that the entire colour scheme for Labour conference last year was also pink.

Hasn't raised my hackles, the pathetic attempt by the left to create a division in society that doesn't exist has. All stereotypes are based on truisms, as the toy industry would attest girls love pink.
Yours a Tory in living in Sheffield Hallam who admires Nick Clegg, but wants the Tories to win the popular vote, but really hates Labour.
If I was in a straight Labour/Ukip fight, I would in this election still vote Tory as 1) I can't stand Farage but more importantly 2) if it comes down to a minority rule as we mostly expect, then the more votes the blues have, the greater their legitimacy to continue in Govt.
This morning is yett again dominated by a Tory media obsession that frankly leaves the rest of us bemused.
The pink battle bus, coming to a kitchen sink near you soon.
The one positive thing for Labour is it is simply not possible to maintain the current level of incompetence over the next 84 days.
Primarily the culture of those that follow Islam, which is the point that has been made from the start.
Presumably it's been fully fitted out with with white goods and an ironing board.
Patronising crap from Harman.

You can also see there exactly where the problem lies: on the spending side, not the tax receipts side.
So nothing to do with Islam and everything to do with the people.

Aside from certain schools of Islam stating that its is obligatory.
Money well spent. Not.

"The unemployed should be forced to take a job after no more than two years on the dole to end stop them spending a ‘lifetime on benefits’, Labour will say today.
Rachel Reeves is challenging David Cameron to back Labour’s plan for a jobs guarantee to limit Jobseekers Allowance to a year for under 25s and two years for older workers.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, the shadow work and pensions secretary warned the country cannot afford leaving people ‘stuck on benefits for years on end’.

Some don't. Some Christians in the same region also believe it is obligatory.
Still taking the most and primitive followers of a religion and arbitrarily deciding they exemplify that religion is stupid.
"Ed Miliband? That guy will never be Prime Minister...."
Business knows Dave will be on the "in" side in the referendum, and in two past plebiscites, Dave has won them both, He smashed Nick Clegg in the AV referendum, and he mullered the Scot Nats in the second one.
He'll destroy Farage in the in/out referendum.
Far from being beyond satire, we are at least partially to blame for the increasing pinkification of our female children,.
I can't find the study you refer to, can you provide a link?
Still taking the most and primitive followers of a religion and arbitrarily deciding they exemplify that religion is stupid.
I believe I said as much several times, however attempts to say that religion doesn't play a role in this practise are equally fatuous. Its a cultural practise that has been adopted by religions, however the fact remains that the vast majority of FGM survivors are Muslim, and so it is the view of their faith that matters, and it is at best mixed, there have been fatwas issued against it, but other clerics are been either equivocal or even in favour, the current view appears to be http://www.stopfgmmideast.org/background/islam-or-culture/
My nieces are absolutely obsessed with fairies. My nephews aren't. It's probably in part, an inherent preference among girls and boys, and partly cultural conditioning. But, it seems a very minor issue to get bothered about.

It's as if Greece and Venezuela and Argentina and all the spendy bankruptopias of the world just don't exist in their universe. Lord help this country if we get a Labour / SNP binge after May.
James Chapman said this about her "the Tory candidate for Chippenham, Michelle Donelan, who had the zoned-out, flower-power charm of a Glasto chick" ( http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2774257/George-s-great-welfare-squeeze-Tories-freeze-benefits-10million-families-new-austerity-drive.html )
A trade union boss was today cut off on live radio during a bizarre rant over a planned Tube strike.
Steve Hedley, assistant general secretary to the RMT union, launched the tirade after being asked about strike action in support of a driver who allegedly failed a breath test.

You misunderestimate his strategic and tactical brilliance.
likewise boys missing out from their ballet careers.
and so on.
