    (Broadcasting question)

At about 49 minutes into the match, BBC1 showed us an annoyingly pointless and irrelevant shot of the statue of Jesus in Rio, with the sun behind it, instead of showing us the match which we wanted to watch.

Was that in the feed from Brazil, which was supplied to all broadcasters worldwide, or was it an editorial decision by the BBC in moving away from footage of the match as it was happening? In other words, did ITV and others show the same thing at the same time?

Itv showed it, not sure at what time

As far as I know, the WC is one tv feed supplied to all broadcasters who then do their own commentary, graphics etc on top of that.

The press from every quarter are really going for Butler-Sloss.

Baroness Butler-Sloss, the retired judge appointed to investigate claims of an establishment child sex abuse cover-up, was responsible for a controversial ruling which prevented warnings being issued about dangerous paedophiles.

The Metropolitan police are to announce a ban on new recruits who do not live in London, to reverse the trend of officers commuting in from the home counties to police the capital's diverse communities.

From 1 August new recruits must have lived in London for at least three out of the previous six years. Those behind the scheme believe it will survive any legal challenge.

Going to see how this is legally enforceable.

If the European Championship draw is favourable, who fancies a Germany vs Holland final?
Roll on the European qualifiers next year when both Ireland and Scotland will face the World Cup winners.... Not that I want to put too much pressure on the Scotland team, but if we are going to lose against the best team in the world, can you help ease the pain by letting in less goals than Brazil did. :)

Daily Telegraph - Angela Merkel 'does not want to complete full term as German chancellor'
"Chancellor Angela Merkel is considering quitting ahead of the 2017 elections and is interested in UN Secretary-General or President of the European Council roles, Spiegel reports"

How about this for a UKIP election slogan:

If you want a paedo for a neighbour, vote Conservative.

I think being party political about this will end up back-firing on whoever does it.

How's your war against the BBC conspiracy to portray the RC church as a bunch of choir boy botherers going, now that Pope Francis has joined the conspiracy?

The simple answer to that would be to compare the amount of airtime the BBC has given to the RC priest cover up compared to the amount of airtime they've given to either the grooming gangs or the VIP cover up.

If the ratio was less than 100:1 i'd be surprised.

What would be ironic would be if

    1) you have a group A who are extremely prejudiced and view everyone not from their group as prey

    2) they prey on group B

    3) group B develop a prejudice against group A because of being preyed on

    4) upper middle class people from group C with zero knowledge and experience of (1) or (2) but lots of experience of (3) decide - because it fits in with their class hatred - that (3) is caused by the nasty oiks being their usual nasty selves

    5) group B end up getting it in the neck from both sides

thread glass bead game: what's the connection between St Michael's Mount aristos living 400 years and which teams win the world cup?

    (not really)

Although a radio or telly version of the glass bead game would be great imo - panel of egg heads who've read everything getting points for making the most interesting connections between two random facts.
