Burnham's uturns seem to have been politically nimble avoiding political damage. The Uturn to achieve clean air targets in GM using electric buses without the need for a clean air zone clobbering motorists is an example where he made a virtue out of necessity.
If Starmer had that quality of being able to make uturns without incurring political damage he wouldn't be of necessity announcing his resignation tomorrow. Winter Fuel Allowance is the classic Starmer cock-up (or rather a Reeves cock-up that he failed to snuff out, she must go too.) End result: Keeping the WFA status quo for the vast majority of pensioners (i.e. incomes under £35k), but despite the extra cost still incurring political damage on the same scale as if the uturn hadn't happened. And the government's comms are that bad that a large number of pensioners will be taken by surprise when the WFA they think they lost for good last year turns up unexpectedly this November.

Good evening all, Those who were here yesterday may remember me mentioning the coast to coast bike ride I was doing with my daughter; pleased to report we completed it successfully, arriving in Tynemouth at 2.30 this afternoon. A wonderful morning; June had pulled out absolutely all the stops in the North of England: fields of wheat waving lazily, sheep ambling fatly down the lanes, wildflowers, hares, hawks. I had done a similar,truncated route last summer and felt a little cheated; there were views somewhere behind the cloud, but none that I could see. But this weekend was absolutely perfect. Also Newcastle is a lovely, lovely city, and North Shields and Tynemouth perfect suburbs. I'm very proud of her. Not many 14 year olds have achieved something like this and she's raised o er £1500 for her voluntary work in Cambodia. To celebrate the day, here is a picture of a field of poppies near Ovingham:

Burnham has no electoral mandate from the voters for his tax and spend manifesto, if he is going to be PM the least he can do is face a proper leadership contest against a more New Labour alternative like Streeting
I agree that it would be better for his vision and policies to be tested
But Starmer et al need to do nothing other than deal with emergencies until they leave government.
We cannot tolerate Starmer seeking to advance any policy now that his authority has gone.
Good evening all, Those who were here yesterday may remember me mentioning the coast to coast bike ride I was doing with my daughter; pleased to report we completed it successfully, arriving in Tynemouth at 2.30 this afternoon. A wonderful morning; June had pulled out absolutely all the stops in the North of England: fields of wheat waving lazily, sheep ambling fatly down the lanes, wildflowers, hares, hawks. I had done a similar,truncated route last summer and felt a little cheated; there were views somewhere behind the cloud, but none that I could see. But this weekend was absolutely perfect. Also Newcastle is a lovely, lovely city, and North Shields and Tynemouth perfect suburbs. I'm very proud of her. Not many 14 year olds have achieved something like this and she's raised o er £1500 for her voluntary work in Cambodia. To celebrate the day, here is a picture of a field of poppies near Ovingham:

It seems we will have to adapt, and adapt fast. Much faster than most climate models suggested, at least in Western Europe. This seems to me much more important for the UK than worrying about stupid CCS projects or the like.

Starmer’s been a poor PM, but the vitriol and hatred towards him is just weird. It comes from both the far left and far right. It’s contrived by people whose motives are deeply suspect. Part of me wants him to survive just to spite them.

Fundamentally he has never articulated a political philosophy or vision.
None of this is enough to hate him. But there is plenty not to like.
As I said yesterday, I do believe that this has all been very difficult for him on a personal level and I do have empathy for him for that.
But political careers almost always end in failure. His has happened far earlier than he could have anticipated.
However it needs to end and to end quickly.
He has time to do another high profile job if he chooses.

Reality is it looks like SKS has read the mood and is leaving on something like his own terms.
If Starmer had that quality of being able to make uturns without incurring political damage he wouldn't be of necessity announcing his resignation tomorrow. Winter Fuel Allowance is the classic Starmer cock-up (or rather a Reeves cock-up that he failed to snuff out, she must go too.) End result: Keeping the WFA status quo for the vast majority of pensioners (i.e. incomes under £35k), but despite the extra cost still incurring political damage on the same scale as if the uturn hadn't happened. And the government's comms are that bad that a large number of pensioners will be taken by surprise when the WFA they think they lost for good last year turns up unexpectedly this November.
Its the party that is the problem.
Hopefully enough of them are now so scared of unemployment at the next election they accept they have to follow some leadership.
Actually getting some leadership would be a pleasant change after past two years. Whether Burnham is able to do that is the other big unknown.
He may well go back to chambers with Hermer and take on a few high profile cases.
