Sometimes it's hard to see where science is headed:

People sometimes make fun of science that sounds stupid and random.

Meanwhile, a study of lizard saliva turned into a peptide medication, which was turned into a diabetes medication, which was turned into a GLP1 weight loss drug, that just became the first therapy every approved for … sleep apnea

On the Licence Fee issue. Seems it's all up for discussion soon, so expect the media to be hosting a lot of talking heads in 2025. As regards actual prosecutions there are a few but are pointless for the BBC. Any fines go to the court and not the BBC. Were they to switch to civil penalties like parking charges, they'd make a mint - and could leave a lot of people with CCJ's if they were enforced at County Court rather than Magistrates.

The solution is the abolition of the license fee with the funding of the BBC part changed to via adverts/subscription/whatever other means they want that removes compulsion.

The distribution network and any other items can be funded via general taxation.

Inter alia, Magdeburg shows why Bluesky will not succeed. It’s a woke ghetto. Do a search on “Magdeburg” and it’s a bunch of twats saying “oh this might fuel the right” or “oh isn’t this awful anyway roast carp” or “oh musk did this”

    Absurd. FAIL

If there were lots of german immigrants and certain german clubs started preaching nazi philosophy and advocating violent action against non aryans I expect those clubs shut down hard and those promulgating that hate filled philosophy out of the country pronto.

We know mosques and imam's (largely saudi funded. finisbury park mosque eg) that fit the same bill yet we do bugger all.

I suspect the guardian and the metropolitan liberals would be all in favour of action against the first but aghast and the same actions against the second
And we do not class Saudi Arabia as an enemy of our country, despite their involvement in fomenting these disgusting ideologies and endangering our security.
Even after 9/11 where 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi.

There was a BBC series with James Burke that was based on the idea of how random scientific knowledge came together to make breakthrough. Viagra being a classic.

Just looked at the news for the first time today. Wish I hadn't.

I have that feeling most every day.
Was it always this bleak and we simply weren't aware?
Or are we in an actual and metaphorical dark place?
Had a number of folk certain it never went dark this early.
Or maybe it is death's shadow?
I strongly suspect that the advent of global news coverage has not been great for perceptions of the state of the world. News, by its nature, tends to be bad. Floods, murders, terrorism, war rather than love, peace, good weather. Add in the 24 hour news culture ( as an example BigG has sky news on all the time, and I don’t think that’s uncommon) and now social media and you can come to see everything in a very negative light.
I think it’s skewed our perceptions around climate change too. Every natural disaster worldwide is now headline news in a way that it wasn’t 20-30 years ago and this adds to the narrative that the climate is rapidly worsening. Climate change is very real, but eff3cts are frequently exaggerated (mainly by the media).

Perhaps sometimes it’s good to turn off.
One reason why I don't have a television. Another is that when the then Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sachs, compared TV to an open sewer running through one's living room, I could see his point. I find I get enough bad news and stressful situations just from daily life. If anything happens that's really important, someone will tell me or I'll come across it without a telly.

    Good morning, everyone.
