MI5 spy reveals secret 'unauthorised' IRA talks

I say well done him, ballsy with personal risk from both sides, but paid off.

I disagree. He was making promises that he had no means of implementing.
It's quite interesting that that was a similar sort of deception as practised by Gerry Adams on the IRA, according to a number of insider accounts.

    Yeah, its an interesting one.

Based on honour and straight talking, would agree with you.

But from a pragmatic point of view, think what he did had the right pay offs, not for him (he seems still troubled by it despite it leading to peace), but for society as whole. A very low chance of success but for many, vs a high risk of failure for him personally.

Trump doesn’t drink. But he has a beer track advantage over Ron DeSantis.
    https://www.politico.com/news/2023/03/25/trump-desantis-gop-primary-00088730
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ pre-campaign campaign for president has hit the skids — particularly among key blocs of voters he’ll need to dethrone former President Donald Trump next year.

Polls show Trump dominating his likely primary competitor among GOP voters in the so-called “beer track” — a shorthand for the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the bloc of voters with lower incomes and levels of educational attainment. While DeSantis is still the preferred candidate of high-income voters and those with college degrees, he is showing signs of bleeding there, too...

Offensive That Wasn't. Over the last few weeks we've been bombarded with news that the Ukrainians are about to launch their big counteroffensive, either to unblock Bakhmut, punch south into Zaporozhe, or both at the same time. Some commentators have speculated about elaborate VSU operational plans, including amphibious landings across the Dnepr as a grand fixing attack, swarms of attack drones, and battalion after battalion of new Western armor. I don't think any of this is actually going to happen at this point. This isn't to say the VSU hasn't tried. They clearly intended to mass forces near Bakhmut and in Zaporozhe as part of an offensive plan. Then two things happened. First, it became obvious that the assembled units were in a dire state and unable to attack. This is a common if depressing phenomenon - commanders tell snowballing white lies on their readiness reports to avoid the wrath of their bosses, until that same higher headquarters orders them to actually do something with their "combat-capable" units and they, rather embarrassedly, report that they're not actually ready for action. Then the Russians happened. More specifically, the Russians used what is clearly an excellent targeting network to destroy critical supply depots that had just been filled for the offensive and hit the collected units in their assembly areas with long-range strikes. This led to, I believe, a drastic de-scoping of the offensive to an effort to stabilize the line in Bakhmut and launch some feints in Zaporozhe in an effort to draw off Russian forces. The Zaporozhe attacks seem to have been shut down by now after disastrous losses with no gains, and General Syrsky is making bizarre excuses about the weather in an effort to explain away the lack of action around a Bakhmut that's in immediate danger of being renamed to Artemovsk. Here's a little military rule: no operation ever has perfect weather. If they were ready, they would have attacked by now. - Alcibiades

So going skiing over Christmas, and ordering a takeout pineapple pizza to eat while watching Die Hard is not as sophisticated as I thought?

Mr. Mark, while I'm (vaguely) aware that DRC has been (ironically) severely harmed by the armed conflicts over its many resources, not sure if the 21st century has seen violence/death tolls on a par with Ethiopia's rarely mentioned war.

I can see why, for a European audience, Ukraine would take precedence, but the near total lack of coverage of the Ethiopian war seems bizarre.

Partly because our media tends to ignore Africa, partly because the conflict there is difficult and inconvenient* to understand, but mostly because it is not a war with immediate threat to our own safety.

    * for example, recognising that people fleeing it might actually be refugees rather than economic migrants.
The idea that people are 100% economic migrant or 100% refugee is nearly always wrong.
Replace 'economic migrant' and 'refugee' with just about anything and this statement about people will still be true.
The idea that people are 100% Platonic solids or 100% the use of evidentiality in verb forms is nearly always wrong.

Hmmmm, I guess that is still true…

Liz Truss has requested peerages for some of her closest Tory supporters despite her government lasting only seven weeks after a disastrous budget.

The former prime minister is understood to have submitted a list of peerages, while No 10 is also still considering whether to grant a long list of honours requested by Boris Johnson as well.

What a bizarre attempt to make something peculiar out of something entirely normal.
Not really. Not all PMs have issued resignation honours. Therefore its perfectly reasonable to ask whether it should be something all can do even if PM for 2 months. Might at least the number be limited?
The fact that some PMs have chosen not to exercise a choice is irrelevant in an argument about whether or not those who have chosen to exercise it should be allowed to do so. I don't know where Iain's quote came from but it smacks of more slimy briefing from the same delightful characters surrounding Sunak who demand party loyalty from everyone else except themselves.
It's not irrelevant at all. Conventions evolve. Its convention we hold general elections on Thursdays but it was not always convention and not universally followed in any case. A choice to nominate does not oblige it, and any choice is open to criticism.

People are well within rights to suggest the convention should be about rewarding those who gave good service during a premiership and that someone gone in 2 months has no reason to make such an award. Likewise, the fact not all PMs do it gives grounds for people to suggest it should be made official that none can do it.

My preference would be the latter but obviously Truss is entitled to nominate under current rules.

What she's not entitled to is amnesty from
any criticism of her exercising the option.

It's her choice and people can criticise her choices. Why shouldn't people say its wrong if they think it is? Many things are permissible but that doesn't mean people have to accept it is right in all circumstances.

If Trump is indicted soon most Republicans will be expending time and air on how hes innocent and it's a witch hunt and he needs support . If Desantis at that point tries to say no to Trump he'll be going against the grain.

Post 2008, Risk became important. So they got rid of the annoying expert guy and appointed a nice, clubable generalist.

Yes, but he didn't say that - he inferred the long-term policy of the British government was a United Ireland, which it isn't.

Of course you could create an argument to say that such a lie was beneficial to the peace process. But, if that was true, you'd also be pretty unhappy by now if you were Sinn Fein that after 30 years this still hadn't translated into actual policy, with no prospect that it will.

At the same time, they continue to advocate arms deliveries and cash payments to Kiev, although they admit that this aid will still not help Ukraine, since Russia vastly outnumbers it in resources, money and alliances with other major powers such as China and India. “Most of the Ukrainian army is already dead. Its best soldiers, trained in the United States, have either died or are out of action. Nobody cancels Ukrainian prowess, but Russia is likely to win anyway, thanks to overwhelming resources,” said the co-chair of the Center for American Security (AFPI), Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg. He believes that the most likely outcome of the conflict is a humiliating truce for Ukraine, as a result of which the country may cease to exist: "It's time to divide Ukraine: everything east of the Dnieper will go to Russia, and everything to the west - to Poland. Historically, these two countries controlled present-day Ukraine."

It’s an interesting thought for Macron. If he can’t move the left hand data point to the right, maybe he can move the right hand data point to the left? A tax on non-sugary drinks? A (literal) drink/driving campaign?
That is the British solution. The latest rise in pension age was cancelled owing to falling life expectancy.

So hilarious, considering that the HOLY BIBLE explicitly says that the idea that nakedness is something to be ashamed of is a consequence of SIN!
However, the central message of said Bible is about salvation from sin, so the aforementioned Yankee Doodles don't need to be obsessed any more  .
My point in a nutshell. (And if I remember correctly, that was a Ronnie Corbett line in the 1970s in a sketch about nudity.)

To stem bleeding you need to take action - it's still early, but he needs to be more direct in why him and not Trump.

If Trump is indicted soon most Republicans will be expending time and air on how hes innocent and it's a witch hunt and he needs support . If Desantis at that point tries to say no to Trump he'll be going against the grain.
The dilemma for DeSantis is whether to fight Trump now, and risk defeat since he is outgunned, or keep relatively quiet in the hope of inheriting MAGA voters once Trump has left the scene in four years time, with the risk a better Republican might emerge. The other player in this 3-dimensional chess game is Joe Biden. DeSantis might see a weaker opponent like Kamala Harris in 2028 than the incumbent next year.

It’s more likely to be microbial fermentation products.
You can make almost anything out of them, and the taste/texture problem is simply a matter of product development.

    For example:
    https://www.solein.com/

You can grow the stuff anywhere - no agricultural land required; just cheap energy - so somewhere like Saudi Arabia is likely to be self sufficient in food within a decade or so.

Give it enough time, and even Casino would be fooled by blinded taste tests.

I have ordered the pork belly with dauphinoise potatoes, carrots and a red wine jus. A pint of Surrey Nirvana to wash it down.

It will probably be the Baileys Creme Brulee for dessert. Maybe the cheese board too with a port.

Casino Royale (raising the suspicion that Ian Fleming had seen avocado pears on a fancy foreign menu but had actually ordered one).

DeSantis is WORSE than Trump. Because he is smarter, politically MUCH savvier, and way less inclined to self-defeating stupidity. (RDS preferring politically-profitable stupidity.)

Back with another strange map of the 2021 Census.

This time it's the second most popular answer for the question "What is your main language?".

I really love the fact Yiddish is on this map, but I'll confess I wasn't quite expecting it to be 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.

We finally got around to renewing our passports this week. (I haven't travelled abroad for years.)

We'd thought maybe Paris, to have a nice weekend break.

    Hmmm. Nope.

No Paris will be fine. In 2024. You'll be lucky to get your new passport back by 2023.

The United States is clearly in a very dark place at the moment. Both sides are equally to blame in my opinion.
It may be worth also considering the way in which UK culture differs. The USA is increasingly deferential to extremist Christian opinion (normal Christians are just middling sorts like everyone else, and David is a product of a deeply Christian culture). The UK in the school system is highly deferential to Islamic opinion, while being open to ludicrous degrees of contempt for middle of the road Christianity.

Well, we deported all our religious nutters to our American colonies in the 17th Century. Long game.

At least the Australians stopped being criminal when they got there.

    Sort of.

    Last night’s Picard. ❤️❤️❤️

There wasn’t a single scene that I didn’t love or fangirled over.

This season of Picard isn’t just one of the greatest seasons of sci-fi it is one of the greatest seasons of TV.

You liked The Last Jedi too...
It was good but it was no SPECTRE.
Last Jedi was the best of the three new ones in my opinion but the trilogy was incredibly disjointed.
@TheScreamingEagles are you a Trekkie ? Would someone who is not a Trekkie enjoy it too or do you need to know endless continuity references ?
    Yes I am a Trekkie.

Non Trekkies would like it but some won’t due to all the plot points for all the other series and films.
    Thanks.

I love TOS, and have enjoyed Voyager and TNG myself.

Just wondering how accessible it was.
You probably need to have watched DS9 as it's highly relevant to this season.

Hmm, dunno about this 'both sides as bad as each other' business. DeSantis is a horror, yes, but Trump is another league worse.
DeSantis is WORSE than Trump. Because he is smarter, politically MUCH savvier, and way less inclined to self-defeating stupidity. (RDS preferring politically-profitable stupidity.)
    Once in power, yes.
But it’s still an open question whether he had the political skills for a national campaign. On that score, Trump is for now the bigger threat.

The hard part will be recreating the imperfections. The random way the fat is distributed in a rib-eye for example. I can see mince, or even a decent fillet steak, and definitely chicken, being pan made fairly soon though. I guess real chicken becomes an expensive luxury.

But the pressures of growing population in regions with limited agricultural land (or fresh water), coupled with plentiful cheap energy, and the development of food processing technology, make it a huge new commercial opportunity.

Just a question of how long it takes.

Not sure, I always took it that Bond was having an extra savoury course while she had a girly desert. Bit like the Flat Iron chain where years ago I concluded that rather than having pudding with the rest of the table, you should have another steak. With no sides, it’s about the same cost.

True, and he's young and has plenty of time. Probably. He was riding high after re-election, and anything could happen in the next 6 years - he should go for it whilst he knows he can.
It's worth noting that quite a few (most, in fact) Republican presidential candidates in recent years have had trial runs for the nomination before securing it. Romney, McCain, Dole, Bush Snr, Reagan for example. There's not really that much downside for DeSantis running against Trump so long as he acquits himself reasonably.

I have ordered the pork belly with dauphinoise potatoes, carrots and a red wine jus. A pint of Surrey Nirvana to wash it down.

It will probably be the Baileys Creme Brulee for dessert. Maybe the cheese board too with a port.

What no photos? Anyway, welcome back Leon.
    Here's the main.

    Is that vegan "pork"?
    No.

Italy move to ban the inclusion of insect flour in pizza and pasta grade flours. Must be properly labelled and sold entirely separately to standard flours. Puts them on a collision course with the EU which wanted to silently make insect flour an additive to regular flour without obvious labelling.

    Feels relevant to today's discussion.

I have to say, spending the last week and a bit in Rome was extremely refreshing for a cynical Brit. The people are fiercely protective of their culture and outsiders must assimilate, not carve out a bunch of special rules they get to live by. A lot to learn for Brits who should be more proud of who we are and our history.

Looks like the plate is upside down! Still, at least it's not been served on an old shovel or any other pretentious wank!

Bit early, but I'm tempted to escalate this and get Jean-Luc Batt-arred.

    Interesting:

Back with another strange map of the 2021 Census.

This time it's the second most popular answer for the question "What is your main language?".

I really love the fact Yiddish is on this map, but I'll confess I wasn't quite expecting it to be 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦.

I would never have guessed Nepalese would be 2nd most common first language in NINE local authorities??!!!

Might the explanation be Gurkhas and their families/descendants, concentrated on/near military bases in areas with few other recent immigrants/decendents?

    That’s my best guess.

I assume the map is correct? Wouldn’t surprise me if it was wrong.

How many Nepalese people do we have in the UK? There aren’t that many, surely?

    You're just jealous.

Nothing to stop you ordering the same or having a surreptitiously danger-wank over it later on.

It's a lie that is in common circulation in far-right political circles.
Some conspiracy theories, lies, panics, etc are more common in some ideological circles than in others.

Casino, mate, genuinely we need to stop this little vegan/meat eater spat. I only tell you to go vegan because I know it winds you up. For what it's worth, my veganism isn't a religion, it's just a dietary and lifestyle choice after re assessing my own health and fitness after my wife's brush with breast cancer. Plus equally importantly, we really should be kinder to non humans and the planet in general. It's not down to me to judge how anyone else eats. So enjoy that pork, yer dirty meat eating bastard!🤣🤪

Yes, I've seen this one before in some murky corners of far-right discourse.
