As a Spurs fan it all feels very odd that we've already signed two players before the window has properly opened and we've got two likely signings in Spence and Bastoni to be completed in the next week or so and 3-4 more to come.
Baby Jen truly has been born into a different era, long may it continue.
Officials at the Stade de France found a total of 2,800 “fake” tickets when scanning Liverpool fans into the Champions League final on Saturday, according to reports.
The Agence France-Presse claims the figure was confirmed by stadium authorities and representatives of Uefa during a meeting with the French government on Monday.
The French interior minister, Gérald Darmanin, claimed on Monday that 30,000 to 40,000 Liverpool fans had turned up for the game either without tickets or with counterfeits. He spoke of “massive, industrial-scale and organised fraud with fake tickets”.
The far lower figure of 2,800 relates to tickets scanned by stadium officials and has not been publicised by the French government.
A number of Liverpool fans have said problems with the scanning machines meant legitimate tickets were identified as counterfeit.
We need to be sending people to Rwanda for it to discourage anyone from getting on a dinghy and setting sail for our rainy haven. This is welcome news therefore.
I quite like the Government being in desperation mode. It would be nice if they were so desperate to placate the voting public all the time.
I'm all in favour of the government building a proper offshore processing facility, and prioritising those who go there directly, rather than trekking across the Med and Europe to get to the UK, and then submitting an asylum request.
I am more sceptical of us just dumping a small number of people in Rwanda, and then not actually doing any processing. It seems more like it's designed for tabloid headlines than to actually solve the problem.
Just caught a headline, "Starmer and Rayner issued with..."
Looks bad.
Just as one thought Boris's luck had finally run out.
No. Bad for Starmer and Rayner, sure. But if they go,
1. It makes Johnson's clinging on look even more miserable, 2. It allows Labour to move on to phase 2 of "Operation Move On From Jezza". The boring bloke has cleaned up the mess, now they can pick someone interesting to put out the bunting.
It reminds me of that moment in that historical film set in Ancient Rome when the would be fascist emperor (the first ever kaiser) said, infamy, infamy, they all got infamy.
End of days stuff.
No! No! No!
It was "Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!".
Shortages of GPs. The BBC has published a map, and I had expected it would correlate with Brexit, via left-behind and declining towns, but instead its most striking feature is the clear division between east and west. There are more doctors per 100,000 patients in the west half of the country. Not Brexit country; not the prosperous Home Counties or South-East either. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-61598158
Northumberland right at the top of the supply there. Which is wondrous cos it's three weeks here to see a GP. Better or deid by the time you see anyone.
Jeremy Hunt's new book Zero mentions that he did persuade Theresa May to open medical schools and train more doctors. Hunt says he recruited 3,000 more GPs a year but it made no difference as existing GPs retired or moved to part-time working.
You can't really say it out loud, but the number of GPs who are women is pretty disastrous. They all seem to be part-time. That obviously impacts in the surgeries but also means the medical schools are so less productive as they are full of female students who will also go part-time after a few years. But, as I say, you can't say this out loud.
So, wait, you're lamenting the fact that the majority of GPs are women. Have I understood that right?
No. I'm lamenting the fact that we don't have enough GPs because so many are part-time. And there is indisputably a link to that being because so many are women. Very few men go part-time. It's just a fact and probably needs to be taken into account when it comes to workforce planning.
Further to the Great British GP shortage, given so many appointments are by phone, perhaps The Saj could devise a way of shifting phone consultations to areas of greater GP availability, preferably without penalising a patient's own doctor.

So, what do you want to do? Recruit more doctors? Force part timers to work full time?
It’s a well known problem in healthcare. One thing is too look at recruitment to uni courses. Why are they now dominated by women? Are we sending out the wrong messages? Have we pushed women’s careers so well at the detriment of men’s? Even simple things such as choice of photos in a propectus. Does your course onl6 show women in its photos? And then for those in the profession. Of course many will want part time work. Pay is good, they are often married to other good earners too and there is more to life than work. I’m not sure what the answer is to that.
So... men are put off from becoming doctors because they don't feel represented in prospectuses?
Are we really having this discussion? I feel like someone's spiked me or something.
It’s a real thing. One of the ways we have tried to encourag3 more women into subjects is to make sure the profession looks like them. So for engineering you will see plenty of female engineers in prospectuses, even when the courses are 80-90 % male. Healthcare has it the other way. You may think it sounds stupid, but it’s not. It is of course not the only thing that can be done.
"Healthcare" is a broad church. But there's no way in hell I'm accepting that there's a perception amongst boys about doctors being a "female" profession. I certainly accept that many jobs are seen as gendered and that perception needs to be taken account of. But in the popular imagination, doctors are men. I think a lot of people would be surprised to learn that most GPs are female. It's not a this-is-not-for-me problem. The "lack" of male doctors is down to something else.
You’re wrong. You’re even wrong in my case
When I think “GP” I now think, if I gender it: “Woman”. Because at my central London surgery 76% of the GPs are women and have been so for 20 years., The receptionists are also women. The people who do my blood tests (I am hypothyroid) are also women. Nurses are women. Healthcare is female, and this goes to the top. And I am a middle aged git, heading to my 60s
So for much younger British people the idea of “doctor” must now skew heavily female
Surgeons still skew male, IIRC. But other than that - neurology, psychology, anesthesia, GPs, nurses, etc. - it skews female.
The interesting speciality in that regard is obstetrics & gynaecology. Here it is abbreviated to obs & gynae, and there are still lots of male consultants. Americans call it obgyn, pronouncing each letter separately, and it has turned overwhelmingly female over the past couple of decades. Fans of the book and recent television series, This Is Going To Hurt, may also know it as brats and twats.
I read the book recently. Very good. Quite an uncomfortable bit in there for bloke readers about a pissed young man who, naked, slides down an abrasive lamp post. Funny though.
Opened my eyes to how brutal the hours are for junior doctors. They do so many unpaid extra hours. Bit of a scandal really. I don’t envy them. No wonder many go part time when they can.
As a Spurs fan it all feels very odd that we've already signed two players before the window has properly opened and we've got two likely signings in Spence and Bastoni to be completed in the next week or so and 3-4 more to come.

HYUFD tells me what Tories think, and I value this, being opposed to any party who I feel would have the slightest chance or desire of instituting a one party state.

Angela Richardson MP @AJRichardsonMP PM must reinstate the foreword in the Ministerial Code. I recognise it's his code and belongs to him, but removing words that we recognise as standards in public life is damaging to trust and respect for those who step forward to be HMG Ministers. Never to be treated lightly.
And just imagine how furious you'll be when the courts put the flights on hold because of legal challenges. You will be incandescent and you will heap hate on the lefty lawyers and the judicial establishment. And so the government's culture war strategy will be vindicated once more and on we will go.
Jesus F Sodding Christ. Do I really need to spell this out?
It was a joke AIMED at this ludicrous Tory “policy” which the Tory government has no intention of applying in any way that makes sense (ie you have to do it to everyone, like Australia, or it won’t work) because the Tories are futile cowards, scared of the BBC
If I thought the Tories might actually get all Australian on these migrants, and actually deport them, I would not “air punch”. It would be a grim and ugly necessity, something to be sadly regretted, and reluctantly accepted, not celebrated
I did me comment to see what daft Lefties would get outraged. An IQ test. You failed
I knew you joking and teasing.
There isn’t anyone in this country… I’ll rephrase that, there is no UK citizen anywhere in the world who actually believes this costly policy will actually work to get THAT excited about it.
But it is a damaging issue for the incumbent conservatives, if not this “fig leaf” proposal, what real policy can they turn to?
I havn’t a clue. These people are not just fleeing oppression, be it tribal, political, sexual, war, poverty, lack of future if they keep going through many other countries to come here - There is this ‘Dick Whittington’ mentality about the people crossing third of the world, through other countries, risking their lives just to come here - whilst they have that in their heads what can you Really do? Germany wants them, yet they want to be here. What can you do?
Only two approaches will work with the boat people problem: give up and let them all in, or be ruthless and throw them all out - and if you're going for the latter you need strong legislation that is made explicitly superior to the Human Rights Act, and a lot of expensive infrastructure: enough patrol vessels on constant watch in the Channel to intercept all the dinghies, and a high capacity and remote offshoring facility.

What about the older men whose pension funds are close to the lifetime allowance and don’t want to breach it?
Just caught a headline, "Starmer and Rayner issued with..."
Looks bad.
As Dominic Grieve had to explain to the hapless interviewer on Ch4 News that is simply proceedural
Yes, its an investigation into a possible offence. Proceedures are followed. I'm sure it was vital for them all to be gathered together to have dinner with Mary Foy as per the agenda, and they have nothing to worry about and aren't massive hypocrites. Time and plod will tell.
As a Spurs fan it all feels very odd that we've already signed two players before the window has properly opened and we've got two likely signings in Spence and Bastoni to be completed in the next week or so and 3-4 more to come.

The trouble with that plan is that it would either lead to the UK taking more asylum seekers than it does at the moment, or someone on the ground putting up a "sorry, we're full until next year" sign. Neither of which is ideal for the target audience.
A scheme like that, run by the UN, that distributes asylum seekers fairly and globally, has a lot to commend it in the 21st century. But the need for fairness (i.e. winning the lottery ticket by being born in Britain gives us lots of obligations) makes it pretty sure that it won't ever happen.
Talking of which,
Sam Freedman @Samfr Wow. The refugees served with notice they'll be sent to Rwanda are from Syria. Imagine leaving that horror, getting all the way here and then being told you're being sent to a dictatorship.
Two things. Firstly, judging by the way everyone is talking on here, the only thing now that can save Boris is something the causes a deep and immediate political freeze that lasts the few weeks and distracts the public. So, er, long live the King I guess.
You're not following your thoughts on fascism to their logical conclusion:
@IndiaWilloughby When the Queen dies, wouldn’t be surprised if Boris appoints himself Fuhrer and assumes total control. That’s how close I think Britain is to Nazi Germany.
Perhaps I am naiive, but I think we are slightly further away from Nazi Germany than that.
We haven't even got to the cabaret club stage.
For shame.
Reached the depraved sex stage though: overweight pole dancers wrapped in UJs, sexy tractors, the possibility that someone might bump uglies with Fabricant, it's like a heavy night on Potsdamer Strasse.
IIRC they had specialist nightvclubs/streets for every kink in Weimar Berlin, if Philip Kerr's novels are any guide.
Ja!
Don't know what the German equivalent of phwoarrr is..
Having been away at my godfather's funeral this afternoon, I see from earlier posts in this thread I am now described as a Fascist on here, which is apparently what those still loyal to Boris are now described as. Heaven help those posters if they ever faced a real Fascist government!
Its on its way sweetie. Its what you want. Remember, you earlier said that people who don't vote for you can be ignored by government. That is not the function of government. And your government is moving to silence its critics. Dismantle the rule of law.
If that was really the case you would already have been interned long ago, without trial!
Considering that this government is trying to inter people without trial at RAF Linton-upon-Ouse, you say that without any irony. And that it attacks judges and lawyers whilst undermining the rule of law. Because if lawyers can make the legal case in the high court to show that your lot are acting illegally, the fault isn't your lot acting illegally. No, its the fault of the judges and lawyers. And when the media report this then we need to find ways to stop them dissenting. And when people protest we need to clamp down on that as well. MPs not being pliant? Simply dissolve parliament and rule by decree.
Call it what you want. The demolition of our society and the framework that protects us is there to see. And you would go further would you not?
England will play their Nations League group match against Hungary in Budapest on Saturday with at least 30,000 fans in attendance - even though the fixture is being held behind closed doors.

Sad to see the hatred of Bradford. Never been (except sitting at the train station once, trying to get to Hebden Bridge) but fine architecture I hear.
Plus, the birthplace of David Hockney.
We should try to get back into the European capital of culture though tho, which gets proper investment and attention.
I've been to BOTH Bradford stations
Sunil now that you’ve pretty much done the UK, suggest you move on to Ireland, or perhaps New England.
Sadly, I came VERY close to doing GB (as opposed to the UK) before the pandemic, the outstanding rail routes being Inverness to Kyle and Inverness to Thurso and Wick. Also never got round to doing Clitheroe to Hellifield (Sundays only), and the Trafford Centre branch of Manchester's Metrolink (opened just days before the first lockdown!).
And just imagine how furious you'll be when the courts put the flights on hold because of legal challenges. You will be incandescent and you will heap hate on the lefty lawyers and the judicial establishment. And so the government's culture war strategy will be vindicated once more and on we will go.

I disagree.
The UK has a problem because:
(a) It has insanely long asylum processing times and (b) There is a large informal labour sector in the UK, where people can work without documentation
The combination of these two factors makes the UK a big pull. You won't get sent back quickly... and you can earn a decent wage working.
Let's put this in context for a second. Norway estimates they have fewer than 300 illegal immigrants in the whole country - despite being an enormously prosperous country, in Schengen, with close to zero unemployment. (Oh, and they don't bother with enforcement of failed asylum claims, because people 'self deport')
Why? Because there's next to no informal labour market in Norway. You won't be able to get a place to live, a bank account or a job if you don't have the proper documentation.
And just imagine how furious you'll be when the courts put the flights on hold because of legal challenges. Result, no problem.
Though we also speak English. Probably not many migrants have Norwegian as their second language. We also have settled communities from most migrant countries of origin.

The next Government will, of course, also flail around in the middle on this issue and also please no-one.
Result, no problem.
Though we also speak English. Probably not many migrants have Norwegian as their second language. We also have settled communities from most migrant countries of origin.
Sure - but not many speak Swedish, and Sweden has similar problems to us.
In other news the Gulag for Refugees planned to be opened in North Yorkshire has run into trouble. Locals don't want their village turned into Guantanamo Bay and the Home Office keeps not making a decision.

A must listen! Interview with Dominc Grieve on Ch4 News.
The new Ch4 Interviewer is simply out of her depth though for the PM it's devastating!
Dominic Grieve hasn't accepted the result of the EU referendum yet.
Oh, I think he has. Like myself he considers Brexit to have been a monumental act of national self-harm. Brexit is done, but to consider it to have been utter folly, is a perfectly reasonable view to take.
For shame.
Reached the depraved sex stage though: overweight pole dancers wrapped in UJs, sexy tractors, the possibility that someone might bump uglies with Fabricant, it's like a heavy night on Potsdamer Strasse.

...“[Pope Pius] also knew denouncing atrocities could antagonise the German Catholic soldiers who were shooting Jews. He remembered the Reformation and didn’t want to create a schism between Catholics in Germany,” he said.

That particular model has a hot bulb engine. You can say that again!
As a Spurs fan it all feels very odd that we've already signed two players before the window has properly opened and we've got two likely signings in Spence and Bastoni to be completed in the next week or so and 3-4 more to come.
Baby Jen truly has been born into a different era, long may it continue.
Arsenal fans are just so bitter. Have fun on those Thursday nights! Super Mikel couldn't get Champions League.
Don’t worry, I’m not bitter.
But it does make me smile. For years, I had to put up with morons (both Arsenal fans and fans of other clubs) criticising us for finishing in the Top 4.
Whilst I’d take winning a cup over finishing fourth, I wouldn’t take winning a cup over having a team capable of finishing fourth. And having a team capable of finishing fourth is very difficult to achieve.
Sad to see the hatred of Bradford. Never been (except sitting at the train station once, trying to get to Hebden Bridge) but fine architecture I hear.

I used to work out of the now grade 2 listed derelict Bowling Iron Works on Bowling Back Lane so I know Bradford quite well. Bradford is not Henley-on-Thames, but if Northern and gritty floats one's boat, it can't be faulted.

Queensbury is very nice. Thornton on the other hand, is certainly "Northern and gritty". I recall the cheapest curries anywhere in the Western world on Leeds Road, back in the day.

I think the criticism from rival fans was that Arsenal seemed to believe that 4th was an achievement in and of itself rather than a stepping stone to greater things. Spurs, at least this time and the last few times we were in it definitely attempted to win and compete on all stages.
There really does seem to have been a huge lowering of expectations at Arsenal, I don't understand how the fans are satisfied with the season or the manager. He's clearly out of his depth and having spent £150 last summer and £100m the summer before I'm also not sure how much more the owners will be willing to sink into the club while he's in charge.
Getting Conte and Paritici in is the best thing Spurs have done in ages. They're both world class in their positions and now we've held onto them as well as Kane and Son there's a semblance of something great being assembled at Hotspur Way.
If I was an Arsenal fan I'd be looking over my shoulder at Newcastle, Man United and Leicester all of whom have better managers and the first two will out muscle Arsenal in the transfer market all summer. I'd also say Howe and Ten Hag are a bigger pull factor than Arteta. The way Arteta has publicly fallen out with star players like Aubameyang, Pepe and Guendouzi is going to be a factor in getting that big name world class signing.

Many will be looking for an excuse, since most of them (like us) seek to avoid difficult decisions. Problem for Boris is he seems to be employing a variety of contradictory messages to provide such an excuse (he's still the top man, no clear successor, he will promote you, he will lash out and take you down with him, etc)

Was she drunk when she announced that !
To Nadine Dorries every city with a Wetherspoons is a City of Culture
Doesn’t Bradford have a film festival?
Lots of cities have a film festival. Even Edinburgh has one, and you'd think it had plenty already (actually, I think it's one of the more reasonable ones, because capacity is inherently limited).

I am more sceptical of us just dumping a small number of people in Rwanda, and then not actually doing any processing. It seems more like it's designed for tabloid headlines than to actually solve the problem.
1. It makes Johnson's clinging on look even more miserable,
2. It allows Labour to move on to phase 2 of "Operation Move On From Jezza". The boring bloke has cleaned up the mess, now they can pick someone interesting to put out the bunting.

PM must reinstate the foreword in the Ministerial Code. I recognise it's his code and belongs to him, but removing words that we recognise as standards in public life is damaging to trust and respect for those who step forward to be HMG Ministers. Never to be treated lightly.

The Government daren't let them all in because most of the electorate wants rid of them, as per these results: https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2021/11/30/four-five-britons-disapprove-governments-handling- It isn't nearly nasty enough to lock them all out properly, either. So it flails around in the middle, doing stunts to try to make itself look tough yet ultimately pleasing no-one.
The next Government will, of course, also flail around in the middle on this issue and also please no-one.
I'm sure it was vital for them all to be gathered together to have dinner with Mary Foy as per the agenda, and they have nothing to worry about and aren't massive hypocrites. Time and plod will tell.

Whilst I’d take winning a cup over finishing fourth, I wouldn’t take winning a cup over having a team capable of finishing fourth. And having a team capable of finishing fourth is very difficult to achieve.

Angry thread about M270 MLRS and M142 HIMARS 🧵
and a bit about BM-27 Uragan and BM-30 Smerch too.
Angry, because every M270 and M142 thread I have seen on twitter so far is FULL OF MIND BOGGLING ERRORS...
Story to follow...

A lull is coming over the Jubilee weekend obviously as no sane Tory would interrupt her maj's celebration with a crass tweet.
So, Sunday and Monday next week are crucial...
I just assumed that was an odd name for the only one of importance.
