'Will they be demanding contributions from other EU states?'

Definitely,we aren't in the Euro but still had to make a contribution to the Greek bail-out and are not in Schengen but will still be expected to pay.

Or maybe just limit contributions to countries like Germany & Italy that still don't contribute 0.7% of National income to overseas aid even though they agreed to this 10 years ago ?

Or we could just use some of the overseas aid budget? Nowhere does it say it needs to be a net increase in spending
  • The solution to the Greek problem is for them all to move to Germany as migrants where they will be supported.

Speaking in Brussels, Viktor Orban, the Hungarian prime minister, says that a new border management system comes into force on September 15 with the "full presence of police and military", writes Matthew Holehouse.

He says it is essential that Schengen states such as Hungary have a "duty" to protect their external border under the Schengen code. They have to "put an end" to the "masses" crossing the border.

Across the EU people have "fears and concerns that do not have a voice", he says. "They see that we cannot handle the situation, and that causes fears and concerns. We have to be clear we understand people's fears and concerns."

Orban vs the EU: "Quotas will increase the number of victims."
    — Matthew Holehouse (@mattholehouse) September 3, 2015

He says most migrants "started on this journey because of a hope of a better life, not because they were forced to do so. This is a mass migration of peoples that has an unlimited reserve."

"If the EU continues with this politics, then tens of millions of people will arrive at the borders of Europe."

EU leaders must "make clear as a moral issue" that people can settle in Europe is an "illusion".

"Our Christian obligation is not to create illusions, hopes in people who will risk their lives in the hope of something that we know is not real."

Simpler to move the German border East as far as the Bosphorus and north east to the edge of Ukraine.

Long summer holidays actually do more to enforce inequality that pretty much anything else. Middle class kids tend to do more over the holidays, other cliched things like that.

I'd actually suggest a full overhaul of school terms with more, shorter holidays and a bit of freedom for schools to put them where they want. And also longer days, to 5 or 6, but with more 'less-intense' sessions in there. A longer lunch break but with more chance to do sport in that break, for example.

The usual suspects come up with threir usual antipathy toward anything Lib Dem but Tim has come up with at least something to think about.

If we are moving away from State control of education via Academies and Free Schools, why not let schools decide when to take their holidays rather than have something imposed by local authorities or central Government ?

Some might argue a quality education doesn't require long periods of attendance - in other words, it's what you do when you're in school not how long you're at school that matters.

My summer lunch cafe was "invaded" by a commonality of teachers yesterday - twenty of them all talking loudly on their first day back. I was tempted to tell them to settle down and be quiet or I'll put them in detention but that didn't seem wise.

In fairness to Farron the concentration of school holidays at present is a bit barmy. Not only clearly concentrating the upwards drive in peak holiday prices it also means industries not at all remotely connected to education ( like mine ) have painfully quiet Augusts as so many decision makers are away at once. The French do a zone a, b, c thing dividing France into three along ( non neighbouring ) regional lines, and I think the Germans do something similar. Wouldn't be a bad idea to look at here for England and Wales ( Scotland and NI go earlier I think anyway).

Interesting how much support Cameron is getting on LabourList.

Its just been announced that this has been the coldest summer in 3 years. I wish I could remember what the Met Office long term forecast was for this summer.
The other point is that it is only 3 years - not 13 or 23, but that once gain after only 3 years we have had a cold summer.

As is often the case, a generalised comment hides a multitude of truths. It's not been a bad summer for the south-east and London in terms of rainfall and sunshine and July 1st broke several temperature records.
That said, the romanticised idyll of long summer days of unbroken sunshine hasn't materialised here but go a couple of hundred miles south of Portsmouth (or Torbay) and it's been a very different summer.
I've not seen the overall numbers yet for France but they have had a long hot summer with all manner of records broken with temperatures getting past 40c (104F in old money) on a number of occasions in the interior. Germany and the Low Countries have also had very hot spells as well.
A small distance can make a great difference and this confuses the overall debate. To assume because you've had no heat that no one else has is as foolish as assuming that because you're a Conservative, everyone else is.
As is often the case we find the Met's forecast for a hot, dry summer looking somewhat out with some areas looking to have the most rain since records began.
The reality is that events like El Nino, not something a couple of hundred miles away, can affect our weather. The Met chose to ignore a strong El Nino yet now choose to blame it.
Can we imagine if a simple matter of 'weather' and some far off cycle in the Pacific had left us with a record hot summer instead of a cold one just what the Met would be saying.

I can't agree with the consensus in this and the previous thread that Cooper now has a better chance than Burnham.

Maybe my Labour circle is atypical because we're northern, but it's always been between Burnham and Corbyn round here, and if anything that's grown in recent weeks - Andy is thought to have belatedly pulled his finger out and said some vaguely Labourish things (though there's still suspicion about whether he can be trusted to stick to it if he gets the job), while Yvette irked people by saying Corbyn's economics was wrong in principle - most Labour members agree with him in principle even if they have doubts about his electability. I went to see her in person a few weeks ago and, while most listened to her respectfully, there were a few people very angry about some of the things she'd said about Corbyn and her refusal to serve in his shadow cabinet.

I wondered about geographical differences when I reported that the Broxtowe non-Corbyn vote was for Cooper. I don't think there are enough Cooper<->Burnham transfers to get over the line either way.

Cooper hasn't quite refused, by the way - in the interview I saw she said it'd be difficult but one shouldn't say never.

I think it's a regional thing: allegedly Burnham is running fourth in London (though I can't remember where I saw that).

England's innings off to a good start.

    Currently 24 for 0 after 4 overs.

I backed England at a seemingly amazing price of 2.44 - looked good at the time.

    Refugees or migrants?
As they will be selected from the Syrian Borders rather than the amassed ranks appearing in Hungary and else where, they are more than likely genuine refugees escaping the civil war.
    And traffickers?

  • Some useful data on the balloting here. In short, the market appears to be reacting to events which the electorate cannot react to.

The party initially promised that 99.9% of its electorate would have received ballot papers by 28 August, but it is now refusing to disclose how many of the 554,000 have been sent out.

A initial batch of 340,000 was dispatched on 14 August, and a second batch of 170,000 voters should have received their ballots between 21-26 August. That would have left a final batch to receive their voting instructions by email by Friday 28 August.

I don't think so. This is a thoroughly thoughtful approach by the government, compared to the ill thought through policy on the hoof by the Germans. We will do our bit, but not do anything to encourage more migrants, not will we be contracting out our immigration policy to the traffickers.

I hope that the people we take are the most vulnerable: firstly, orphans who would end up as street children, and secondly groups that have been most persecuted: the Yazidis, Syriacs and Ishmaelis.

I think that is a fair comment. I'm not sure how we can be sure or be 'allowed' to take the most vulnerable.
I would think - taking this on to another subject - that this would enamour Cameron less to the EU as far as negotiations are concerned and Germany's and France's arbitrary and unilateral actions clearly undermine the concept of co-operation

There was discussion earlier by some media commentators that Cameron will be on the wrong side of history. I think it will be the likes of Merkel who will find themselves on the wrong side of history. She will create a huge pull factor and cause countless deaths.

Cameron's approach will ensure that the most vulnerable - women, children, sick, elderly, etc. are able to come to the UK. This is a far more ethical approach to the crisis which reduces the pull factors. This will be missed by many who only see Germany taking 800,000 and ignoring the damage that will cause.

I recall a court case between two people in Bristol about ownership of a rather tubby ginger cat named, I think, "Sonny". In that context I seem to remember a statistic that there are considerably more cat owners than there are pet cats.
Also, I can recommend a smashing children's book called "Six Dinner Sid". I own it, and definitely am not a child.

No Miss P cats are inherently evil. Famous felines include Ghengis Kat, Adolf Kitler and Benito Moggilini.

So is Corbyn going to make Labour an offer they can't refuse?

Or are his friends just going to "reason" with those who might hesitate to join his shadow cabinet?

Personally, I think the sooner he is sleeping with the fishes the better.

    Refugees or migrants?
As they will be selected from the Syrian Borders rather than the amassed ranks appearing in Hungary and else where, they are more than likely genuine refugees escaping the civil war.
    And traffickers?
Possibly – however I doubt traffickers would put themselves forward for ‘temporary’ repatriation and give up on what is obviously a very lucrative business for them.

It was during the General Election campaign and Foot as Labour leader had just committed a number of gaffes that week, including IIRC falling off a platform. My husband had visions of newspaper headlines "Foot's Car Kills Man" with at the bottom of the page: The dead man's name was Mr XXXXXX. .

Good for Corbyn so far - migration crisis is non-controversial - everyone just saying we must help - so no focus on Corbyn views - which is what will play big at a GE.

The solution to the Greek problem is for them all to move to Germany as migrants where they will be supported.

Simpler to move the German border East as far as the Bosphorus and north east to the edge of Ukraine.

Ahah! lebensraum mark 2. Merkel, der Fuhrerin, as Morris Dancer insists she be called, will be pleased.

I find most of the discussion of the refugee crisis on this blog difficult to parse ("It's the refugees fault. It's Germany's fault. It's the EU's fault..." and so on ad nauseum). My take on it is slightly different[1] and doesn't involve blaming others for their misfortune, so I can't really join in. However your observation is something I can enquire into. Why would people at the Syrian border be more likely to be refugees than those arriving at Hungary? Are you referring to people posing as Syrians in Hungary?

[1] There are many bad things in the world and we cannot solve most of them. We have a duty of care to do what we can for our own, but helping others is optional, not a duty. It speaks well of us if we can help others, but we do not incur blame if we cannot.

This is what I don't get about Kendall being supposedly the "electable" candidate, when she's so unashamedly pro-Europe. That in my view would feed into one of Labour's biggest weaknesses, the idea that they're too weak and willing to be dominated by other governments (seen with the SNP issue this year).

Corbyn definitely seemed very critical of the EU, maybe this referendum won't be as simple as people are thinking.
