I think British politics is finally about to stabilize.
Burnham will win en election (probably in Spring) meaning he'll be PM for longer than anyone since Cameron. Farage is imploding. He won't lead REF at the election. As a result, Reform will fall apart amid much very entertaining recrimination and in-fighting.
Conservatives are alive thanks to Kemi. When Labour eventually gets turfed out the Tories will take over...
The two-party system survives... We endure!
If we have a gilt strike in September, I'm the new Ragersarmus! 😂
Quite a few people across the divide have suggested Farage won’t lead Reform.
Conversely I think that may help them. On a micro level I know people, like my in-laws, who should be certs for Reform but won’t touch it because of him.
Of course he will attract others. Would they stay ?
Farage leaving would help Reform, seriously?
You must be seeing something in Bob, Suella, Richard or Zia that I'm not seeing.
Plus the assumption is therefore that the growing funding scandal won't have any affect on the Party, only its leaders? Colour me sceptical on that one. Carole Cadwallader seems quite convinced that the ST has the dirt that links Moscow and Clacton...
We are now up to 11 individuals who sat around the cabinet table of previous Prime Minister Keir Starmer who have been sacked or left the government now that Andy Burnham is in No 10.
Indeed. Departures so far
Darren Jones is out as chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster David Lammy is out as Justice Secretary and Deputy PM Hilary Benn is out as Northern Ireland Secretary Jenny Chapman is out as international development minister Jo Stevens is out as Wales Secretary Liz Kendall is out as Technology Secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds is out as paymaster general and Cabinet Office minister Peter Kyle is out as Business Secretary Rachel Reeves is out as Chancellor Richard Hermer is out as Attorney General Steve Reed is out as Housing Secretary
Richard Hermer's departure is surely a great relief and the end of the ridiculous Chagos deal. Good riddence.
One hopes, certainly
Hermer might lose out on some of his spec fee but them's the breaks.

I said ‘may’ not ‘will’
He’s very marmite.
All of Reform are very marmite. The party is very marmite.
Hardly, this looks like a Brown government with a Corbynite twinge replacing a vaguely New Labour government if anything, just with Burnham a bit more charismatic than Brown
Spot on HY.
I’m not so sure this has been wholly a Burnham purge, as different wing and faction of a party not seeing themselves sitting in a Burnham cabinet, having to deliver Burnham’s bizarre back to seventies manifesto they don’t agree with. Would you choose to be in Burnham’s cabinet with the likes of Louise Haigh and Useless Lucy barking at you to raise your game?
As I said weeks ago, with the Burnham takeover, it’s not so much Burnham himself but that horror show of uselessness around him that will be his cabinet.
Let’s see Burnham’s cabinet come under pressure in their jobs - as you always will no matter how good or shit you are in government ministries - then how they manage facing the media. Starmer’s government collectively may not have great reputation for decisiveness and delivery, but individually there was talent especially in communication - the difference between Reeves doing a Chancellor media round, and Healey, will be chalk and cheese.
Just like the US Democrats to replace Biden as candidate, Labour really needed a contest here. They certainly would have been more united on the other side of it, than they are tonight without one. Great day today for Farage and Kemi Badenoch, just as the Democrats mess up was for Trump.
So defence is a priority but so is cutting the cost of living. Guns and butter. I thought he was wanting to go back to the 1970s but it looks like he is going back a lot further.
We'll go back to the 970s if we can't defend our country.
Anyone who remembers the 970s wasn't there
King Edgar was one of the more successful Kings in that period.

To an extent but I expect Burnham to get a poll bounce nonetheless, he also has more charisma and is a better communicator than Harris was even if policy wise they are not miles apart

You have to laugh at all those political journalists and other pundits getting it so wrong on the next Chancellor. I think they convinced themselves that Mahmood was going to get the job, but with no evidence whatsoever. Congratulations to Burnham's team on being leak free: nobody, but nobody, put Healey in the frame.

That would leave the Tory party as beer, which doesn't quite work, but Reform as the scrapings definitely does.

Although, he walked from office - making Starmer's position on the defence review untenable and firing the starting pistol for the transfer of power.

The drip feeding of news every Sunday screams that the Sunday Times have enough to make Reform's finances being front page news throughout the Summer.

And those simpletons were 100% correct, why move someone who is seemingly actually managing the Home Office instead of being managed by it.
The misdirection briefing over chancellor is very funny.
But fair play to the mysterious people who this morning and at lunchtime curiously backed John Healey for chancellor at odds of up to 130/1, days after the last time any bets been placed on him for the job with Betfair.

Healey Chancellor. A safe pair of hands but will be expected to implement Burnham's economic agenda
It was always going to be interesting to see what job Healey got, if any, after resigning from Cabinet on a point of principle over policy.
Provided he doesn't wreck his own reputation with a bungled budget Britain now has a chancellor with a strong political position. That's normally been a good thing, I think.

No terrorist charges yet. Obviously hadn't got an I support Palestine Action t shirt in his closet...
CPS can lay additional charges at any time, assume they're having a good look at all his electronic devices. Allegedly was a moderator on a particularly loony Subreddit, so it might take them a while.

Only if REF was a sensible, normal party. But they are not.
REF is just a cult, and like all cults when they lose their leader, after the event, it will fall apart amid recrimination and in-fighting.
In Russian War News, the Russian Ministry of Finance has announced an indefinite pause in government bond sales. This is a bit of an issue because Russia is running a large and growing budget deficit and has bonds maturing that need to be repaid.
The main options would appear to be having the central bank print money, seizing bank deposits, or going cap in hand to the Chinese.

This feels big. They could of course default on the repayments, or get bondholders to take a haircut ...

Pass a law saying that the bondholders have been repaid and it is illegal for anyone to say otherwise.
Final nail in the coffin of aspiration. The games gone....
Strangely, I aspire to be paid enough to have to pay 50% on some of it.
You can pay 50% already old chum….voluntary payments are accepted by HMRC
Er no...
If you consistently overpay your taxes year after year, HMRC will treat it as an ongoing mistake that needs correcting, rather than accepting it as extra revenue.

I thought kinabalu's punt was Pat McFadden?
🙂 - I definitely did a long odds bet on a seasoned old guy who wasn't Shabana Mahmood or Ed Miliband.

You must think that I'm crazy
You wanna replace me?
Baby, there's n-n-n-n-n-n-no way
"When shall we three meet again?"
Philipson is even worse.
Where are the equivalents of Mo Mowlam in the current party?
Congratulations to Burnham's team on being leak free: nobody, but nobody, put Healey in the frame.

Anyone see Ben and Burnham in the same room?
He was always going to be well rewarded for that.
Marmite - not so much.

I’m sure they’ll be downing plenty of Madri tonight over there.

Congratulations to John Healey on his appointment.
He can now ensure the Defence Investment Plan is properly funded. Conservatives will work with him to cut benefits so we can fund defence.
Because we can’t have higher taxes or even more borrowing.
That’s the gag !!
A pub in the Toon has a large display outside for Madri with “The spirit of Madrid” emblazoned on it.
BBC
Yeh, right.
Although it would be funny if he knifed Starmer in the front, cut a deal with Burnham and then Burnham offered him Minister for Paperclips.
