Nigel Farage’s cunning stunt sees him transform into David Davis – politicalbetting.com

RUPERT LOWE will not stand a candidate in Clacton unless there is a second by-election following a ruling against Farage by the parliamentary commissioner for standards.

One step down from Davis as a stunt.

It won't erase any stink from being bought and sold (even if bought within the rules), as seen by opponents, and will it really shore up his position internally?

    Hard to see the point.

    Early evening all :)

First off, is it Bin-Face or Bin-Fahsay, I think we should be told.

If it were just those two on the ballot paper, I reckon Bin-whoever might win and that would be the ultimate humiliation for Farage.

A small reminder - David Davis was doing his by-election as a protest at the Labour government going Full Tonto on surveillance and wanting to lock people up for ever lengthens periods of time without trial.

Yres, at least there was some policy principle involved rather than "I like grifting and I like to grift"

Lol so Farage v Binface it is. That's a lose/lose for Farage. Well done the other parties. They aren't fools. Just waiting for the Greens, I think? Don't spoil it Zack. You'll look a total dick if you do.

They can’t have done - Farage clearly thought one major party would put a candidate up against him.

It’s literally Farage against the Count and the Count has better policies.

He’s also going to mention 5 million a lot. Heck if he’s crowdfunding this campaign I suspect a lot of people will give him a few quid

I think they should have expected it as a possibility, so who is it for? Are there people on the fence about the finance stuff who will not care when (inevitably) it still gets brought up by other parties and media?

That seems like a small group compared to Reform loyalists who already don't care and Farage haters who will care regardless.

Farage's ego is now so huge that the idea that his opponents wouldn't fall into his trap didn't occur to him.

The hole he's in is so deep that a stupid bad-odds bet like this was his only chance.

The original story was bad and enough for him to be subject to a recall. Then the Sunday Times published enough to really knock him down. So the only explanation is that the plan was for the Times to reveal everything they had during this by election so that the boil was lanced.

The irony is this gives the papers another story to focus on while Andy quietly works out over the summer what he needs to do.

This move seems to be jumping the gun. He hasn't been suspended or recalled yet.

I've heard rumblings of Farage going out of politics again to come sweeping back in again before the GE. I'm not sure how viable a strategy that is, though there's absolutely no doubt the man needs a break.

“We will be standing a candidate in the real by-election, which will follow the standards investigation into Nigel Farage’s fishy finances.

We will not be standing a candidate in the fake by-election that Farage is causing to distract people from what is happening. We need to let that investigation run its course, and I think the reason why Nigel Farage has resigned is because he’s terrified that he’s going to be found to have done something wrong.

The best thing for him to have done would have been to call a press conference and explain what he did with the money, apologise if needs be, and that would have been the end of it. Instead, he has been running away from scrutiny. No one is bigger than parliament. We all have to register our interests.

We, the Conservative Party, are very focused on uniting the country around sensible policies. We’re going to focus on getting Britain working again and showing some common sense, not throwing random by-elections out because we’re having a hissy fit.”

    - Kemi

A cynical take is that Badenoch is sitting out this election because she fully expects to lose. I mention this because politicians' thinking in these situations tends to be cynical, including Farage of course.

It does mean Badenoch won't be going head-to-head with Farage over the summer about the bribes, which she would be doing if she was actively trying to displace him as the leading party of the right. She might of course expect him to collapse of his own accord, and so better not go in guns a-blazing, which would be very un-Kemi-like, but not a stupid strategy as far as it goes.
