Evening from Spoons. I may be an AI luddite. I am utterly sick of having it rammed down my throat. A few examples:
1) Accounting platforms where it gives you suggestions for what the transaction may be which are almost always wrong. Takes longer to delete what Quickbooks / Sage / Revolut / Tide have autocompleted than to just do it directly 2) YouTube Studio. I am offered "comment reply suggestions" to most comments left on my channel. Can't switch this feature off, uses screen space, especially on mobile 3) Have just completed a trial of Monday.com for my business. Spent c. 8 hours on it, plus a few more doing planning etc. Trial about to expire so lets set our subscription. Not only do they force you to pay for users you don't have, you must buy AI tokens for those people you don't have. And in 2 weeks the number of AI tokens we have used on trial is zero. A cost increase of 50%. And of course you can't opt out. Other than binning the entire platform which we have now done 4) Microsoft won't let you remove Copilot. Endless intrusion on apps like Powerpoint, even down to the minor irritation of having to dock the logo thing so its not on the slides I am working on. WhatsApp won't even let you do that - the Meta AI symbol takes up screen space and you can't remove it
I'm being driven mad by AI. Please make it go away.
It's almost like they've forgotten all the lessons they (should have) learnt from the infuriating paperclip 20 odd years ago.
"You seem to be writing an anti-AI screed. Would you like help with that?"

My pet hate is when I get a long pdf of the accounts for the charities that I am Trustee of. The AI comments that it is a long document and would I want a one page summary. The answer is No, I want the detail.
I am yet to find AI useful for anything yet it is drowning us in slop, that gets in the way of real content.
I did get some use out of AI the other day in figuring our steps to make an old game which has not been maintained work, as the answer is usually buried in some ancient reddit thread somewhere, but that's mainly a consequence of Google Search actually being pretty shit now (the consequences of monopoly perhaps) and the AI search actually being functional.
Google is now deliberately shit. They know that if you find your search result quickly then you aren't looking at their adverts for long. If they string you along with poor results and paid for placings they get more adverts.
It's the old adage that if you're paying, you're a customer. If you're not, you're a product.
I’ve come to the conclusion that all the major tech companies are run by the pointy haired boss from Dilbert.

Adobe Acrobat is the same. I don't want AI summaries of a simple PDF thanks. Piss off. You are meant to be able to switch it off in the settings but its under the surface waiting to come back.

There used to be a plugin for `vim` called `vigor`. It would just pop up and say things like "It looks like you're trying to type [Cancel]", "You pressed cursor-left [Undo]".
The expansion of Heathrow is set to move a step closer as Sir Keir Starmer plans to publish the blueprint for a third runway within days
I think it's too late for this, and also I appreciate that I 'would' say this, but Starmer should really tack right to combat Burnham. The big centrepiece of which would be to dump Milliband and challenge Burnham to say whether he'd reinstate him. Burnham's 'clean air zone' in Manchester is a black spot on his reputation. Make Burnham the standard bearer for Millibandism and Net Zero, while statesmanlike Starmer realises we must go slower for the good of our national security. Burnham also dumps Milliband he pisses off activists and members and looks weak. Or he embraces Milliband and picks the wrong side of the argument.
It would work well politically, but it's probably too late now as any big moves, including Milliband being forced out, would probably bring the whole house of cards down.
Stupid, stupid encroachment. But hey, who's complaining?
Crazy that these things are now being marked so accurately, but you take the ones that go your way in tournaments like this. There will undoubtedly be others that go against us.

I don't think anything is going to make any difference now. The cry to remain PM because SKS was having "important" conversations at the G7 was frankly embarrassingly pathetic. The leadership challenge will be in on Friday (my guess) and I suspect that SKS will be admitting defeat by the end of the weekend. It's over. Thank goodness.

It's very useful in specific ways, and extremely unhelpful when just slapped onto other use-cases. I've had it literally save me almost 1.5 years work on one thing, and spin it's heels for £££ on another. And the endless 'chatbot' interfaces being shoe-horned into existing apps are almost never a good experience. (Mind you - neither were the previous generation of 'if this, then that' style customer service bots).
It'll shake itself out over the next few years I'm sure. In the meantime we'll get a lot of trash that costs the companies a load, and earns consultants a load - and just p*sses off their customers.
"I've told you I'm voting for you — but if you knock on my door again I might fucking think twice."
A Labour activist's story from Makerfield today.
Much of Westminster thinks Burnham has already won. I'm not so convinced. Piece from me on why.
We're all rooting for your boy, the misogynist.
The comedy value from a Burnham loss would be immense.
Hopefully SKS doesn't die laughing if Burnham loses, though I expect him to win
If Burnham loses and SKS dies laughing, that solves both problems at once - a vacancy is created in No10, and the largest ego in the known world remains unable to fill it. Win - win I suppose.

Manchester clean air zone was Boris Johnson’s idea. Just like ULEZ
Whilst we are on the drinks break, useful for a pee btw, I was laughing at a TikTok ad on ITV earlier where the character was a teacher called “The Rapping Teacher”. Unfortunately the writing telling us his name is in white and a bit of white in the background covers the second P of rapping so I had a bit of surprise when I saw it and then figured what it really said.

That would permanently cement Starmer as entirely redundant dud from Labour’s perspective. “Asthma for our kids!” v Burnham’s “Freebies for everyone”. Only one winner there.
And we can disagree on the underlying argument, but there’s no doubt that Miliband is on the right side of opinion for all Labour and Labour adjacent voters, which is what matters here. Even Reform voters are surprisingly pro renewables.

And the hundreds of thousands of unemployed, as a direct result of the highest energy prices in the OECD, are the price worth paying for Ed Milibandism.

This is just bollocks and you know it. Industrial electricity has been insane for decades here, and Miliband has actually cut costs to a small degree.
Not gone nearly far enough mind, but the Conservatives are highly vulnerable given it’s their system we are encumbered by. And as far as I can tell Farage wants us to prostrate ourselves to global fossil fuel markets which is a niche opinion at best.

What EM policies have cut energy costs, specifically? As opposed to just being lucky with global prices falling.

Some sensible stuff on network costs, BICS too (though that should be expanded much further to 100% of businesses). In the long term, going all in on wind, solar and batteries is going to transform our economy but currently we aren’t brave enough to wholeheartedly embrace it (e.g. nodal and time variable pricing).
Basically, these measures go nowhere near far enough given we should be moving to electrification as fast as possible - I think Miliband has been an abject failure but from a different perspective to you. He should be going much further and much faster.

But he has no storage plan, so all of the renewables need O&G backup.
Personally I’d have been all-in on nuclear like the French. Much as I dislike commending the French.
Apropos of nothing I found a dead magpie in the garden today. Entrails eaten but the head was absolutely clean decapitated and gone. Do cats do this? Can’t work out why it would take the head - can’t be overly nutritious, and not eat the meat on the legs and wings. Only other land predator here is a polecat so found it quite odd.

It would work well politically, but it's probably too late now as any big moves, including Milliband being forced out, would probably bring the whole house of cards down.
It'll shake itself out over the next few years I'm sure. In the meantime we'll get a lot of trash that costs the companies a load, and earns consultants a load - and just p*sses off their customers.

Basically, these measures go nowhere near far enough given we should be moving to electrification as fast as possible - I think Miliband has been an abject failure but from a different perspective to you. He should be going much further and much faster.
Personally I’d have been all-in on nuclear like the French. Much as I dislike commending the French.
