Starmer is, according to most, really boring, uncharismatic, and lacks the common touch. Whatever you think of Labour MPs, they are unlikely to choose a successor who is even more boring, even less charismatic, and shows no sign of having the common touch. So that rules out Cooper.
Labour MPs can only nominate, it is Labour members who have the final decision on next Labour leader
Interesting article by Matthew Syed in the Sunday Times about how it's immoral for the government to keep bailing people out when it comes to things like fuel becoming more expensive.
Yes, the nation's funds are much better directed to bailing out banks and so on. Um ... ?
She's the only potential leader that worries me as a lifelong Conservative
I think the recovery of Starmer and the decline of Farage/Badenoch is perhaps a sign that the punters are looking for a more serious politics... on the other hand Zak Polanski is a deeply, even spectacularly, unserious politician, so I guess there is still a lot of confusion out there...
Interesting article by Matthew Syed in the Sunday Times about how it's immoral for the government to keep bailing people out when it comes to things like fuel becoming more expensive.
Disagree with him on that, which is unusual as Syed is right on most things, in rural areas especially rising oil prices add to costs and the government then has to intervene to help low and middle income households there

Yes “whatabout” the unkind things that people say about Kemi. No, if if you dislike the monarchy and Church of England being established church you should move to the Irish Republic where you can have a President and Popery as your main religion to your hearts content!

If you want biblical purity on everything there are already plenty of Baptist or Pentecostal churches or indeed probably more so the Roman Catholic church. The Church of England has never been a church based on biblical purity on everything, balancing scripture with tradition and reason, indeed it was founded by a King who wanted to divorce his wife and remarry as the Pope wouldn't let him and has just appointed a female Archbishop
Badenoch may be suffering from her mindless agreement to be dragged by Trump into an ill-conceived war, without clear aims (or consultation/agreement with us).
Absolutely she is and it will only get worse as people realise we could have been reopening Wootton Bassett High Street as a memorial.
Her pathetic attempts to claim she never said what she did, is a further massive hit to her credibility and honesty. To dishonesty try to deny what she said and Pritti Patel related even more forcibly with a disgusting personal attack on Starmer at the time won't be forgotten.
The thought of a hyper aggressive arrogant Trump ass licker ever getting near to Downing Street should rightly see her replaced by a serious politician like Cleverly assp.
If not the Tory Party, the greatest election winning machine in history will in all reality be extinct after 2029.
Trump shows yet again that the US under his administration (a) has ceased to be a trustworthy NATO ally and (b) is a much less desirable ally because it starts destabilising wars for no clear reason and with which it has to ask for help when the wheels fall off.

Does Israel have any spare ships?
They don’t care as they can use their endless chequebook paid for by the US .
Israel can't get ships past Aden. The Houthi's will shoot.
No-one can get ships through Hormuz unless the Iranians agree. Your choices are either do a deal with Iran or live without the Gulf, the oil and gas, and in the case of Gulf states, their economies. Everything else is denial and should be understood as such.
Yes because that is the only solution to any war - negotiation.

Incredibly powerful from Starmer this morning.
Backs up again he is The man in a crisis.
We are leading not following directly to Badenoch and Farage. Who 2 weeks ago directly sought total aliegance to Donald Trump and US and Israeli aggression. There pathetic back tracking and denial fully exposed as lies.
Immediately helping those who rely on oil for heating, and warning those canceling deliveries to ramp prices up that eyes are on them
Confirms price cap from 3 months to end July and duty freeze to September will remain.
(if Babenoch again bleets about September, she's going to continue to look pretty dim, stupid and picking the wrong argument again)
I actually understand the companies cancelling deliveries - there is zero reason for a firm to sell a product at a loss - all that would do is bankrupt the firm and leave fewer competitors in the future.
Trump shows yet again that the US under his administration (a) has ceased to be a trustworthy NATO ally and (b) is a much less desirable ally because it starts destabilising wars for no clear reason and with which it has to ask for help when the wheels fall off.
I don't know why it has taken until 2026 and another bloody middle east war to figure this out. Some of Trump's first actions in his first administration should have set the alarm bells off. Certainly anyone paying attention should have simply listened to Trump in Helsinki in 2018 and realised "he can't be trusted", and "he's siding with Russia against his own intelligence agencies".
Yes because that is the only solution to any war - negotiation.

So basically blaming other people and showering a ton of borrowed money that our grandkids will have to pay back on the problem, all the while ignoring the underlying issue, that Mad Ed, who promised to cut prices by £300/year, has actually raised them?
I agree that when it comes to pissing away public money in the short term without addressing or even understanding underlying problems there's no-one more powerful than Starmer.

Come back and make that claim in July 2029 the date which EM commited to reducing bills by and you might have a valid point.
Right now you don't

Don't think Labour have done any reforms to heating oil at all. Not sure you can pin anything on them either way.
In fact the reforms they've done are relatively good for rural households because carbon levies have been reduced for electricity.
The Mad King is going to need to call on the Board of Peace to help him out.
Or FIFA...
About that.
A Kuwaiti analyst openly criticized Gulf policy toward Washington after the latest strikes, saying the region paid billions for influence and received nothing in return. He pointed directly to Jared Kushner, noting that Gulf money flowed heavily into his orbit, yet the same states that financed those channels still ended up facing strikes and pressure.
His conclusion was appeasing Zionist interests and trying to buy leverage in Washington has produced humiliation, not protection. Gulf governments, he argued, must rethink the entire strategy of trying to influence the United States through money while being expected to serve Israel’s regional agenda. https://x.com/iwasnevrhere_/status/2033201030163296632

Has been in lock step with Starmer and Merz, more so than Macron.

I don't like Meloni's politics, but I think she's done a good job at separating her Italian right populist movement from the Trump/MAGA disaster. That's something Farage hasn't quite mastered yet.

That's because she took a non-suck up line right from the start. Long before all this started. And that in turn is because while MAGA may have tried to adopt the Italian populist right, the Italian populist right didn't adopt MAGA.

"My enemies enemy is my friend" is a silly way to go through the world. That's the thinking that gets the UK hard left singing the praises of Serbians like.... Arkan.
Hmm. I think the Cooper - Miliband ticket has two problems.
1) It's quite mainstream, not that exciting. Looks like continuity Starmer.
2) Ed Balls is going to be arguing for different economic policies to Miliband and thinking he could do better.
Cooper will have her own opinion on the Treasury given she was Chief Secretary of it (i.e. No 2 there) in 2008-9.
Good point. I think Ed M will get more influence if he backs someone like Angela Rayner.
How has someone who looks to radiate the warmth of an iceberg and appearing to be an empty husk startled by headlights be considered as leader of the Labour Party. Yvette always leaves me feeling somebody has stolen her spirit, brain and joie de vivre.
Why is Britain's economy in the toilet? Answer number 4,982:
"Publicly traded companies in Britain must have, or “explain to the regulator” why they do not have:
- A minimum of 40% women on their board of directors - A woman CEO, chairman of the board, CFO and/or Senior Independent Director - A board member who is an ethnic minority
Why is anybody confused about why so few companies want to list here and so few promising startups scale up here?
Would you agree to put people in charge of your company on the basis of their sex or race in order to meet a diversity quota?
These rules were brought in by the Conservative Party in 2022, BTW."

We’re largely a bunch of middle aged to old white men on a form of message board that had its heyday 15-20 years ago. And it’s Monday morning. What do you expect?
Good morning
I agree that @Alanbrooke description of Cooper was unkind but then some of the comments on here about Kemi are at times even worse and it is simply unnecessary
I was involved with Cooper and her department over hips with many trips to London to discuss the pros and cons and frankly she just dld not listen
I do not think she or Miliband are labour's answer to the Starmer question but then who is ?
My wife and I are to set off shortly on our 2 day train excursion to Edinburgh so will not be posting much as we want to enjoy the journeys and ever changing scenery
Yes “whatabout” the unkind things that people say about Kemi. Someone should invent a neologism to describe the rhetorical tactic and logical fallacy used to deflect criticism by responding to an accusation with a counter-accusation, shifting focus away from the original issue. Perhaps it’s already been done?
To be honest there are some on here whose use of whataboutery is legend
I’ve not seen such. Just repetitive “what about x” with desperation when various subjects come up.
Quality WhatAboutery used to be a major product of the Northern Ireland service sector. It’s really fallen off though. Another British industry shuttered.
Sad lack of Irish Republicans on this site to pick you up on the "British" descriptor there. Shame. This morning was too good natured - we needed a row.
To be sure, to be sure, to be sure.
Also you can be British and Republican. The monarchy is as anachronistic as the Church.
No, if if you dislike the monarchy and Church of England being established church you should move to the Irish Republic where you can have a President and Popery as your main religion to your hearts content!
Why not put the Bible through ChatGPT to provide 'guidance' for the faithful taking out the inconsistency and nonsense. Then we could dispense with the clergy too and cease the weekly squaring of the circle. Surprised the American Evangelists haven't already.
I note you picked me up on religion but silent on the issue of the monarchy. I'll take it we are agreed on one of the two subjects.
Can't you read? I said if you dislike our monarchy you can also move to the Irish REPUBLIC! So no we also completely disagree on that!
One final try. Why not someone like Tony Blair or Boris as President instead. Much more fun and interesting than Brian. And we can change them after a period if it is 'the will of the people'.

The Right Wing continue to masterbate about women leaders.
Thatcher may have been a heroine to many, an absolute and utter disgrace to equal numbers. She had I will give her credit far more balls and backbone than any Tory male of that era.
May was a decent person, a failure as Home Secretary and handed the hospital pass of all hospital passes by her Party post Brexit trying to govern the ungovernable.
Truss was an extremely poor Minister promoted way beyond her ability even in junior roles and it remains a complete mystery how any woman or man could vote for her.
Badench similarly had a very poor record in Government in junior roles, awful at Trade, lauded by Australia for giving them the best Trade deal they had ever had, and her inability to find an ounce of contrition, middle ground or compromise on any issue with an ever aggressive vent bordering on behaivoural illness will be her undoing, probably before Starmer
What of Labour, the Party of Barbara Castle, Renee Short, Claire Short , Harriet Harman. No women Leaders.
The bottom line is who and when, which woman was better than John Smith when elected, which woman was better than Tony Blair or gordon Brown when elected, I would argue Harriet Harman was a better bet than Milliband, Yvette Cooper a better choice that Corbyn, but they wer enot chosen because the were women, they were not chosen because the factions then in charge of Labour had no suitable candidates.
There was NOTHING "token" about Thatcher, plenty "token" about May , Truss and Badenoch.
To finish, lets look back to 1997. The BLAIR BABES , more women MP's than EVER before, a trnd Labour contined , who were the loudest most disgusting , nasty , snide MYSOGINISTS then! The TORY men . The TORY Press, The Tory Party....so fuck off with your holier than though clap trap, some of us have longer memories than 5 years!

Any chance that the countries trying to export the oil and LNG will police the shipping lanes?
HIghly doubtful, that's proper Navy stuff. I doubt the UAE Navy can find the Dubai Creek using Waze.
I think SKS will find it hard to resist DJT's order. Chance of getting back in the good books and reflected glory if, by some miracle, it goes well vs. HMS Dragon on the bottom of the Iranian Gulf. And on another hand, it's entirely fair game to discuss the presentational shortcomings of leaders, or potential leaders, since that's quite a large part of their job. It's not as though Starmer, or before him Sunak, are/were immune from such stuff.
Starmer’s presentational shortcomings are, and are discussed as, his inexplicable inability to present policy to the public. And, I concede, his voice on occasion. Not his dress sense or “nagging”. Actually if Starmer did “nag” it would be a vast improvement.
The worst I remember being directed at Sunak were references to his height.
Although there were a lot of references to his height...
And his wealth and his wife was used as a weapon to attack him.

Trouble is Trump was negotiating with Iran as Israel and Trump attacked and killed the Iranian leadership..

2) Ed Balls is going to be arguing for different economic policies to Miliband and thinking he could do better.

Trump shows yet again that the US under his administration (a) has ceased to be a trustworthy NATO ally and (b) is a much less desirable ally because it starts destabilising wars for no clear reason and with which it has to ask for help when the wheels fall off.
