That's fair comment.
The local elections are going to be critical - once again, I'd stress the importance of London to both Labour and Conservative parties (and others).

Despite all the disgusting personal slurs on here over the last almost six years I am sure Starmer is a very good man. He's just not Prime Ministerial material. The quite exciting political upheaval is a useful distraction for me at the moment. I’m trying my best not to think too much about the awful family news I’ve been delivered in the last few weeks
My big sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of weeks ago. Then she found out it was stage 4, and it’s spread to her lymph nodes. She had her first chemo session on Friday
I’m so scared for her
My thoughts and prayers with your family, I wish for strength for all of you.
We've been through the same with my sister in law over the last few years. What I will say is the often derided NHS threw absolutely everything at it, the care was really exceptional.

Been through it twice. Once with my best mates wife and once with my sister in law. Both are fine now,

Curlers fail to get to the final. On target for another 4th place
I’d heard on the BBC last week that this could be GB’s best ever Winter Olympics medal haul. You’re not telling me they were wrong?!
I was watching a lot of promising British Winter Olympians in qualifiers. Sadly have seen a lot of Scottish Winter Olympians miss out on medals though.

It might be so but I wouldn’t get too excited, we’ve had the green for go about for an attack on Iran imminently about twenty times in the last four weeks on here.

So after today, we can safely say that those who were keenest to get rid of Starmer, ie. Mr Sarwar have good reason to move now - he is staring down the barrel of a convincing election drubbing in May.
Whereas down south, there is time to play with, and none of the potential candidates want to take charge at short notice, as they'd have to own the inevitable horsing Labour get in May.

The best hope is Darren Jones in my opinion
That is probably one of your more realistic posts today. Before Jones becomes leader Starmer has to fall on his sword, and the sooner the better.
Betting maths has never been my strong suit but wouldn't $100k at 2% odds pay out $5m?
From the screengrab from polymarkets he has acquired just under 4million stakes at 2 cents a stake. If it comes off then he gets a dollar per stake. So nearly $4 million.
That is how I read it. Happy to be corrected if wrong.

So we're thinking Starmer is safe for now, as he's literally thrown everyone who works behind the scenes under the bus to save himself?
However, with everyone gone, he's the last one left so one more revelation, election meltdown or general **** up and we're talking... toast? Probably?
Depends on your viewpoint I guess.
Anyone know how far today's resignations correlate with "Morgan's mates"? If they have gone, there's a bit of an opportunity for Labour to regroup and probably be more effective.
It's not necessarily much of an opportunity, and there's no guarantee he'll take it, but there is half a chunk of a semi-open door.

Dems’ plans aren’t yet final. But the Canada resolution is expected to be the first Dems call up now that Speaker Johnson’s blockade on tariff votes is over
The resolution is from HFAC top Dem Meeks - and he’s got more that can be called up in the coming weeks too
We do love a potential PM resignation on PB. How many times did we predict the fall of May, Johnson and Sunak before events caught up with our excitement for the first two? (which it never did for Sunak)
Truss's was the only fall we predicted in a timely fashion - but then any 4-year old could have seen that one coming tbh.

Just a reminder for you about what the electorate think of "the best Labour have at the moment":
Keir Starmer favourability, January 2026 Just one in six Britons (18%) have a favourable opinion of Keir Starmer, unchanged since last month, however a full three quarters (75%) now see the prime minister unfavourably, up three points since December and the highest figure for Starmer to date. Combined, this gives Starmer a net favourability rating in January of -57, matching his predecessor Rishi Sunak’s lowest point in June 2024, with Liz Truss the only prime minister to have recorded a lower favourability score with YouGov. https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/53907-political-favourability-ratings-january-2026
By comparison, with that net -57, Polanski is on -7.
As for Darren Jones, no-one within a million miles of the current Downing Street operation and their wider incestous cabal should be in the frame if Labour is going to have any chance of turning this mess around.

My view is Starmer had every right to take whatever course he felt necessary to deal with Trump in the national interest. Don't forget Farage and Gove thought sending Mandelson to Washington was the work of a genius. None of that matters. Mandelson blew up in Starmer's face so he has to resign. Them's the breaks.

Truss's was the only fall we predicted in a timely fashion - but then any 4-year old could have seen that one coming tbh.
This time a decade ago, David Cameron was Prime Minister - since then we've had May, Johnson, Truss, Sunak and now Starmer. That's a decent turnover.
As I recall, they all got huge choruses of approval at meetings with MPs so tonight's show of support for Starmer means very little.

It’s all going pear shaped . Two fourth places and the curlers threw in a dreadful performance. Topping the table means zip if you then implode .
In the long list of sporting disappointments, GB not doing that well at the winter olympics is pretty small beer. We're not a wintry country. You wouldn't expect British medals in snowy sports. It's vaguely nice when it happens that some British family which is so fixated on snow has the resources to move out to the Alps and fund their child's relentless focus on winter sports, but we can't really exoect it. I bewail it not.
Tells PLP he will win the fight against his detractors and keep going “as long as I have breath left in my body”
Speaking to the Parliamentary Labour Party, Keir Starmer said: “I have won every fight I've ever been in.
“I fought to change the Crown Prosecution Service so it better served victims of violence against women and girls.
“I fought to change the Labour Party to allow us to win an election again. People told me I couldn't do it.
“And then they gradually said, you might just get over the line.
“We won with a landslide majority. Every fight I've been in, I have won.”
He added: “I have had my detractors every step along the way, and I've got them now. Detractors that don't want a Labour government at all, and certainly not one to succeed
“But I'll tell you this, after having fought so hard for the chance to change our country, I'm not prepared to walk away from my mandate and my responsibility to my country, or to plunge us into chaos, as others have done.”
He described the battle with Reform as the “fight of our lives, the fight of our times”. He went on: “It goes to the heart and soul of who we are as a Party, as a government, and as a country, what it is to be British… And if they ever get in, they will divide, divide, divide. And it will tear this beautiful country apart. That is the fight of our times.”
He concluded: “I'll tell you this, as long as I have breath in my body, I'll be in that fight, on behalf of the country that I love and I believe in, against those that want to tear it up.
“That is my fight, that is all of our fight, and we're in this together.”

If by 'he' you mean Starmer, then he clearly doesn't have to resign. At least, not today.
If and when he does have to resign, that will be in the future because further bad news / poor performance has tipped the scales.
@LauraEWeiss16 News: House Dems are likely to force a vote WEDNESDAY on overturning President Trump's Canada tariffs, per sources familiar w/ the effort
Dems’ plans aren’t yet final. But the Canada resolution is expected to be the first Dems call up now that Speaker Johnson’s blockade on tariff votes is over
The resolution is from HFAC top Dem Meeks - and he’s got more that can be called up in the coming weeks too
Aren’t the Supreme Court due to actually rule on tariffs sometime soon after having buck passed a few times.
There are those that think the SC have delayed so they can rule the tariffs stop from the date of their ruling, but the funds collectd to date ccan be used by Trump to bribe voters ahead of the mid-terms. It's a theory - but I doubt there's enough money been raised to make that work.
I’m so scared for her
That's horrible, Blanche. I really hope the treatment goes well.
I have no advice except ask questions. Not all doctors communicate as well as Foxy.
Eluned Morgan needs to get off the pot - Welsh Labour are going to be mauled in May and Eluned is heading for the job centre. She has failed to get any support ftom UK Labour for fair rail funding, devolution of policing etc - now is her chance !! Tell SKS that her support comes with a price - she has literally nothing to lose!!
Re Wes Streeting - is he safe from being unseated? he currently has a majority a little over 500.
What does everyone think of the chances of him being unseated by pro Gaza/Palestine independents at the next GE, and is Ilford too far out of Central London for the Greens to target?
Him keeping his seat is much more unlikely than keeping it.

Trying to justify why Trump can do it and others cannot is probably tough work for them, but I believe in them.

Yes, very sorry to hear this news Blanche. All the best of luck to you and yours.
It's a regulated broadcaster and it's not supposed to broadcast utter nonsense without challenge. The founding Director of OFCOM who wrote the broadcasting codes is reported to be astounded they just let it slide. It's to protect credulous idiots, it's what separates the UK from places where they appoint vaccine denying hoaxers to high office.
They asked his opinion and he gave it. It's called an interview.
And they didn't give an alternative take. Like when the BBC does climate change and interview a renowned scientist then allow an idiot to give their view. GB news are supposed to give an alternate view to the idiots they have on. There are different rules for broadcasters than newspapers
In all honesty Starmer should publish his own texts with Mandelson. I suspect they are incredibly dull
I am 100% sure they will be otherwise they wouldn't even gone down this route in the first place. There will be no smoking gun. My guess will be that some have said spicy things about Trump and it will be more embarassment than anything else and that is why they were trying to do a bit of a filter of some messages under the guise of national security.
The really big cover up is the immediate decision that Mandelson BT email correspondence definitely couldn't be recovered so no point looking into that any further.
One usual Starmer critic messaged "if we can bottle this Kier we'll walk the next GE"
I am no PB Tory but these idiots are deluded.

I am of the opinion that the Mandelson business is the tipping point.
I thought Starmer had more self awareness than this.
This farce is reminiscent of Johnson clinging on scandal after scandal.
The sooner Starmer goes the better. I do not want to live through a fascist government. That is looking more and more likely as each day passes.
When Sir Keir comes out swinging, you'd best get out of the way
It’s not in the interest of anybody except him to resign right now, because there are some disastrous by elections and local elections coming. Leadership rivals want those in the rear view mirror and Farage and Badenoch do not want somebody more competent taking over…
Snowflake has spoken?
Louise Mensch was not Snowflake. I forget what name she posted under.
Didn't Mensch resign as an MP to set up a social media site?
Yes, but we don’t Menshn it,
She had a fall out with the guy she set it up with IIRC.
Our younger readers may wish to know that she used to be a regular poster on this site.
We have younger readers?
There is @Moonrabbit, bless her little cotton socks.

To be honest technically speaking they probably are impossible to recover. I’m pretty sure BT email from that time is long defunct.

Maybe, but coming to that conclusion within about 2hrs, doesn't exactly suggest there was any real desire to look into it.

"Why does it always Rayner me?
Is it because Starmer lied in 2017?"

The local elections are going to be critical - once again, I'd stress the importance of London to both Labour and Conservative parties (and others).
I had high hopes for Starmer, and this isn't just about Mandelson it is indicative of the general malaise. Despite all the disgusting personal slurs on here over the last almost six years I am sure Starmer is a very good man. He's just not Prime Ministerial material. He has not had a good day and he needs to go.
Do you really want to see PM Farage?
We've been through the same with my sister in law over the last few years. What I will say is the often derided NHS threw absolutely everything at it, the care was really exceptional.
Been through it twice. Once with my best mates wife and once with my sister in law. Both are fine now,
Hopefully she will be too.
EXCL: Chris Wormald, the most senior civil servant in Downing Street, is negotiating his exit as part of a wider shakeup of Keir Starmer’s operation after dramatic day
I don't think he has basic political skills
He's not ruthless enough.
He's the best Labour have at the moment.
Only Labour is going to stop Farage.
The best hope is Darren Jones in my opinion
She had a fall out with the guy she set it up with IIRC.
However, with everyone gone, he's the last one left so one more revelation, election meltdown or general **** up and we're talking... toast? Probably?

Why now though, with Trump there is always a side reason
Whereas down south, there is time to play with, and none of the potential candidates want to take charge at short notice, as they'd have to own the inevitable horsing Labour get in May.
I still think we will get a new PM* by Christmas
*Prime Minister, not Peter Mandelson
That is how I read it. Happy to be corrected if wrong.
It's not necessarily much of an opportunity, and there's no guarantee he'll take it, but there is half a chunk of a semi-open door.

The Titanic's crew have decided to applaud as it sinks to the bottom of the ocean.
Truss's was the only fall we predicted in a timely fashion - but then any 4-year old could have seen that one coming tbh.

Keir Starmer favourability, January 2026
Just one in six Britons (18%) have a favourable opinion of Keir Starmer, unchanged since last month, however a full three quarters (75%) now see the prime minister unfavourably, up three points since December and the highest figure for Starmer to date.
Be interesting to see if anything changes. Move to the left perhaps?

As I recall, they all got huge choruses of approval at meetings with MPs so tonight's show of support for Starmer means very little.

He was the Ming Vase.
Oh dear Wes Streeting and Mandleson were sending kisses and encouraging messages to one another - which could be deemed as very “lovey” ….
