Plaid have more to call on for tacticals. 2/1 therefore value in a statistical toss up
Con, Green, LD to lose deposits,

The oldies don't often lose elections, and it's notable how many switchers from Plaid Reform are picking up in that poll. I'm not convinced that 2/1 is value.

Hmm, Caerphilly Borough is a shit hole and I would have thought fertile pasture for Reform.

Labour on 12% are already squeezed to the max wrt the 46% they got at the last Welsh election. Not sure they could conceivably go any lower than that in a seat they've always held since it was created (at both Cardiff and Westminster).

The new Green "surge" may do some damage to Plaid's hopes. I'd say Caerphilly is probably more Plaid friendly though than most of the valley seats given that it's southern half is now basically a Cardiff suburb.
  • I expect Reform to win the seat

The firm at the heart of Britain's critical minerals strategy has ditched plans for a rare earths refinery in the UK, and will build it in the US instead.

It's a serious blow to the Chancellor and her plans for "securonomics" ahead of next month's Budget

    Otherwise, Caerfilthy.

There are a lot of big industrial estates which had imported employment from EU grants in the 80s and 90s, those jobs have all but gone. Braces bakery announced yesterday one of its two factories in the area will close. Like most of South Wales north of the M4 past the tunnel it's an economic desert.

There is still resentment in Islwyn to being forced to merge with Mid Glamorgan to from Caerphilly in the mid 90s. The former being much better run before the merger. However, I'd say Islwyn is probably more Reform territory.

The electorate are much more transient, so it hard to nail down demographics and past VI, if you get the weightings all wrong then the poll is rubbish.

Plus there’s local factors that always aren’t picked up.

This is what Ed Conway says.

Lack of support. That ‘may’ include energy but, like Biopharma, it looks like the US wants to support these key industries more than other nations.

‘But now I've learnt Pensana has decided to ditch its plans for a UK rare earths refinery and will instead refine its metals in the US instead.

Why? Because the US is providing far more support and security to critical minerals firms. Britain & Europe are losing the race’

    @DPJHodges
Just to be crystal clear. Keir Starmer said in the House yesterday:

“What was on issue in the trial is not the position of the current Government, but the position of the last Government”.

That statement was a clear, provable lie. Collins literally cut and pasted from the Labour manifesto because the position of the current government was key to the trial.

He may eventually take the win, but Hodges seems a little ahead of himself here.
    SKS told a lie?

    Never.

Wouldn't it be more difficult to find when he disnt lie?
Aren't both you and Hodges walking a fine line with what is undoubtedly unParliamentary language?
Except neither Hodges or a random on PB are in Parliament...
Out of interest was it @scampi25 who "liked" that post?

Three years - that’s barely time to chose the biscuits for the meeting to discuss the logo for the 9th enquiry into the project.

Joking aside - Rare earths refining involves complex chemical work. Lots of opportunities for pollution etc.

The kind of stuff where it’s easier to heroically oppose doing it here, then use the results.

Much like the proposal for toxic ship (ships full of asbestos etc) breaking facility in the U.K., years back. Despite being a totally enclosed setup, air filtration etc - banned.

Instead, kids with hammers break up these ships on Indian beaches.

    @TheAthleticFC
West Midlands Police (WMP) has requested that supporters of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv not be allowed to attend the Europa League game against Aston Villa in Birmingham on November 6 due to concerns over unrest, sources briefed on the matter told The Athletic.

The force has advised the city’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) against approving an away allocation at Villa Park, and UEFA, the competition’s organiser, is expected to follow the recommendation of local authorities.

Part of the problem with the new format of European competition is that Villa fans can't be banned from going to the reverse fixture (not that that would necessarily be a satisfactory compromise, of course).

A local MP was stoking tensions not so long ago:

    https://x.com/AyoubKhanMP/status/1968379890388058359

UEFA might insist the game is played behind closed doors.

For a reason unknown to me, Youtube is throwing me the Texas Furries Law from several months ago.

TLDR: Republiprats in the Texas Legislature were passing a law to ban (apparently, and amongst other things) provision of litter boxes for school chiddren in loos who self-identify as animals.

TLLDR: The claim that such provision is made, and therefore requires banning, is afaics a straw man fabricated (or believed if they are such Alpha-Grade Numpties as appears) by such legislators around their "anti-woke" obsession, when it misfired. I guess it's better than banning books.

Viral video of the chap (not popular with the Secretary of War, as he has a beard aka a "beardo" in Pantomime Pete's argot) having his pants pulled down by some polite questions. The car crash is mesmerising.

    * Furries are a cosplay community - vaguely in the same niche as people who like Star Trek conventions or Wild West weekends. The Republicans just went loopy.

On the subject of shellfish I read a very good use for the roe from Scallops yesterday (I can’t stand the stuff due to the texture). The chap blends with butter and paprika and melts it to use as a drizzle. Might try this weekend.

Is it not already only 5%, or are we talking business bills?

IMO if that is an option they are watching the treadmill, not their objectives.

Blame Brexit for economic problems, then use Brexit freedom for tax cut and economic growth. I'd agree with it, but not sure it's a narrative that will be easy to sell

It might be a fiscally neutral cut of electricity VAT with increases in fuel duty/VED replacement/gas.

VAT is only 5% on domestic energy as it is. It's a rounding error in energy costs.

Well that is true, but you definitively write stuff off in a hyperbolic manner and for good eg there is no recovery from this, they are doomed, etc. Then a few months later everything is sunshine and light. Is this Net Zero energy costs again?
This is what Ed Conway says.

Lack of support. That ‘may’ include energy but, like Biopharma, it looks like the US wants to support these key industries more than other nations.

‘But now I've learnt Pensana has decided to ditch its plans for a UK rare earths refinery and will instead refine its metals in the US instead.

Why? Because the US is providing far more support and security to critical minerals firms. Britain & Europe are losing the race’
It is called 'lack of support' because the cost base of doing anything industrial in the UK ceased to be economical years ago, so now it's more about going cap in hand to get Government loans and incentive schemes. Complaining about that is far less controversial than complaining about Net Zero.

WRT the China prosecution DPP thing, would I be right in thinking that more or less everyone who is following it at all assumes that the reason why it isn't going ahead is entirely political and about not offending China, that there is small possibility of getting at the truth, that it won't be interesting at all unless heads start to threaten to roll, that all politicians will want to make sure that that doesn't happen, that the real long term issue is the extent to which we are in China's hands and can't get out of it and it's beginning to look like a mistake, and there is no possibility at all of getting the whole story, and probably we shouldn't anyway, and that this is how the world of power works and the public don't find it especially shocking?

Since this is a EUFA competition, the problem could be solved easily by unfurling a map of Europe and asking how an Israeli team qualifies. Since there is no logical answer to that, the interlopers can be immediately thrown out of the competition.

Presumably this would give Villa a bye into the next round, so double win there.

Presumably this would give Villa a bye into the next round, so double win there.
The same way Cardiff qualifies to the English league.

    They're members of UEFA.

Have a read of the history as to why Israel are part of UEFA:

Really, so they’re not going to give the opposition fans a shit time then ? They’re not part of the problem. Course they are.

Dont be an apologist for trash.
I think there are threats from outside football.

    Utterly disgusting, that Villa decision.

Ban Jews from supporting their club because people are so racist they might not be safe? What a disgraceful victim-blaming attitude.

Villa are a crap club with wankers for fans.

The West Mids Police are a disgrace.

Not sure how much this is Villa's fault.

The Police much more to blame.

If Villa and the Police can't ensure safety it should be relocated to be played in another country that can keep fans safe.
