Reasons why Trump is genuinely evil, part 347 of lots
NEW — After putting all Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS) employees on administrative leave Monday, I'm told DOGE is canceling congressionally-appropriated grants to state libraries across the entire country. Libraries are getting notice that funding was canceled as of 4/1.
HE's GOING AFTER THE LIBRARIANS. HOW CAN YOU TOLERATE THIS?
Sash! This used to be a library.
I'm not joking. I think Musk is evil to do this. How dare he, and how dare Trump empower him to do this. Bastards, both of them. And that's only because the mods wont let me use the proper word for them.
I'm not sure if it's still there, but there used to be a sign in the Bodleian Library saying "Ask Google and get a million answers; ask a Librarian and get one, correct, answer". I fear that shutting down access to sources of objective truth is one of the standard hallmarks of a tyrant, and in my opinion that is what we are seeing right now. Of course, Joe Redneck will say, "Yeah, we don't need libraries, everything is on line now!" and that is exactly the problem - who controls what we see on line?
This is also a cancelling of congressional funds which is a total usurp of power by executive etc.
One day I hope this gang will be held properly accountable by the law.
That’s what I don’t understand.
A majority of politicians, especially in the US, go into politics because of power and prestige
But Congress is standing by and letting the executive take all their power with nary a whisper. Is it really just prestige?
There are lots of issues, but two of them stand out to me.
One is simply fear and terror. Sitting here in the UK it is almost impossible, even after the notorious home secretaries we have had, to think that in the USA people have been captured by agents of the state and sent out to foreign imprisonment with no lawful process whatsoever and that some 12 year old White House spokesman has said that they are not entitled to any process. For that reason alone I would not enter the USA. It is no longer a safe country; like Iran. Fear and terror are justified.
The second is linked. The POTUS has taken hundreds of actions, some probably lawful, many not. But it takes huge amounts of complex effort and, critically, time, to challenge all this. Until that's all done, it's effective, and even when he loses he will deny it has happened. This is going ahead in literally hundreds of cases all over the USA, but the effect is already done.
By the way don’t book connecting flights through Newark. You have to queue up to clear immigration (“what brings you here?” “I’m transiting to Mexico City”), collect and recheck baggage (fortunately I was hand baggage only), get on a train to the other terminal, then a bus, then go through security again, and - in my case - a full hour later you’re in the new departure terminal.
Such is my newfound Trump paranoia, I closed my Vanilla PB window before getting to the immigration window.
I am currently in Madagascar - a very poor island whose main (possibly only) export to US is Vanilla. So someone in Trumpland has decided they should be hit by 45% tarrifs. As far as I know they have no tarrifs or barriers against American products. Just that they prefer European products. And Chinese. What does Trump think he can screw out of Madagascar??
I'd say Mr Chump may be cruising for an extra bruising, even given than the succession of lamp posts into which he is walking. He's forgetting again that it is not 1960.
AFAICS Madagascar is technically middle income, which means GNI per head of ~$1000 to ~$14000:
Lower middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $1,136 and $4,465; upper middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $4,466 and $13,845 https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/mic/overview
They make up more than half of global GDP - but we need to cut out China which is about to pop into the High Income category before long, which reduced it to 35-40% of global GDP afaics.
If some of those get their act together, then that's a fair bit of heft.
Madagascar is currently being wooed by China. There's an important potential naval base there at Diego Suarez - which we used in the WW2 once we had chucked Vichy out - just off the coast of Africa.

I do like the suggestion doing the rounds in the tech world that they basically just slapped random tariffs on everywhere that had an internet .tld. Poor old .mg :

Britain is capable of Kafkaesque home office cruelty though. Just ask the Windrush victims. There have been a number of post-Brexit examples too. Ours tends to be a little more bureaucratic and a little less thuggish, but it’s still there.

I would expect the LDs to go for this. Although they were nowhere at the GE (bigger fish to fry near by) they previously were competitive in one of the constituency that created this new constituency and with Lab/Tories not popular and with local decent organisations around the constituency it is worth a punt.
JRM will be hoping REF step aside him, I suspect? (Assuming there is ever a by election, which there may not be as @MJW says )

If he keeps this up, many things will start to look a lot like they did in 1860.
I’m at that stage of a long journey that I start to regret my puppyish enthusiasm to maximise the time off with siteseeing. An 8 hour flight already today, then a 5 hour flight to Mexico to come, getting there late evening, and I went and booked a dawn balloon flight over Teotihuacan tomorrow that involves getting up at 4.30 for the pickup. I suppose that’s 11.30 UK time so I’ll be wide awake.

We seem to have deported our illegal climate to New York though. 9C, low cloud and rain here. 9/11 weather back in Blighty.

Agree. We have been only a couple of steps away from the USA situation. I am not aware, though the Windrush scandal may have some, of situations where people have been imprisioned (at home or abroad) without either a process or the right of due process.
I have not studied the Windrush cases in detail, but they have puzzled me. Where were the MPs? Where were the well known radical and very talented firms of solicitors? Normally you would expect them all to be hot on the heels of these.

TBH I thought we were clear on this. Apologies if I am repeating.
Trump turned the GOP into a Trump family operation around a year ago - Laura Trump being the boss iirc, and the ones who were not Trump arselickers were expelled.
He then looted the GOP funds - very likely illegally - to pay for his personal lawyers.
Now he (and Elon) have threatened any Congress (and Senate) who do not kneel under the table and lick-the-boot (to use a polite metaphor) with "primarying", backed up by a $25m campaign budget from Musk.
Primarying is I think the USA version of "deselection", except that it is putting up an alternative Trump-local candidate for the post of the Representative.
If there are any non-Trumpists left, and allegedly there are, they are just shit-scared.

This is a weekly podcast ("Nat Con Squad") I have been listening to a little to have a fairly pure Trumpist position from intelligent (but Trump supporting) commentators, rather than Maga Loofs on Twitter.
Here is a few minutes in this week's episode "Judges Kill Democracy in France".
It features an apparently-serious comparison of the French Electoral system with the Iranian system where the Ayatollahs decide who can stand, and something called the "censorship-blob", and an ardent belief that JD Vance in Munich was pretty-much spot on.
An interesting belief that Europe is doing to democracy what many in Europe believe that Trump is doing to democracy in the USA. The cleavage is very deep.
As an indicator, one of the commentators is the Washington Editor of the Spectator USA - Amber Athey (was Amanda Duke). And it's published by a prominent the main National Conservative organisation, the Edmund Burke Foundation.
Quite a brave image to go with from Labour in the era of blackface cancellations. It’s not blackface, but is in the ball park I think, especially as it’s only half the face that isn’t Farage, the clothes are his
If that’s a genuine Labour campaign initiative, they need to fire the person responsible for it, consign it to the bin, and try and move on as soon as they can.
It's got to be fake. Apart from the impossibility of executing the idea. The idea itself makes no sense
It is genuine. Of course it might be sabotage from within, but it is from the official Labour account on X
I still can't believe they let the Kemi/Farage face-swap image see the light of social media day. It is APPALLING. Even as a basic image it is ugly and yuk. You really don't want that associated with your party. And there are so many other levels on which it fails....
I see two explanations:
1. Sabotage
2. They are truly desperate
Good afternoon
Just seen this and it is simply disgusting and what on earth is Labour doing allowing such an unacceptable advert
It should be withdrawn immediately and I wouldn't be surprised if an official complaint is made
Indeed.
Pause.
Talking about unacceptable, here's an article pointing out that Badenoch received donations from climate change deniers before changing Conservative Party policy on net-zero
We have far too many politicians in all parties who can be bought.
Isn't that the dictionary definition of politician.....one who is for sale?
An honest politician is one who, once bought, stays bought.
Personally I'm very pleased that a businessman with the gumption and vision to campaign to ditch Net Zero is engaging with senior politicians. It will act as a small counterbalance to 'green entrepreneurs' like Dale Vince and his vast donations to the Labour Party.
Our current energy policy, whilst bringing the country to its knees for no environmental benefit, is also the biggest legal transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich since the Act of Enclosure. I would hope certain posters who claim to be on the side of 'the people' might wise up on the issue.
One thing I think I learned this week is that I can't buy back pension record gaps for the period when I was in a contracted-out scheme.
Complicated .
Not sure why your contracted out years are shown as gaps. I still paid partial NI in my contacted out years for the teacher pension, so my years are not gaps as far as the gov website is concerned.
How many have either been arrested and or charged so far...
Hm. He wouldn't be the first MP to be stitched up on charges like this though. Let's keep an open mind.
From Wikipedia: Norris has a particular interest in child safety and regularly campaigns against child sexual abuse,[11] having co-written a free booklet on its prevention. He also co-wrote, produced and distributed a booklet, Don't Bully Me, giving practical advice to children across the United Kingdom on dealing with bullying.
That doesn't mean much. Sometimes that kind of behaviour is motivated guilt or projection.
Not saying he is guilty as he hasn't been tried but generally they dont bring charges without some evidence of guilt that makes them think there is a good chance of conviction
Next United flight begins. “Would you like Champagne?” “Yes please”. Oh. Of course it’s not champagne or even, from what I can tell, Prosecco. Tastes more like babycham or lambrini.
Presumably I’d have got a tequila on Aeromexico.
EDIT: shit, that sounded really snobby. Sorry. Just annoying misselling. If they’d said “would you like Lambrini” I’d probably have said yes tbh.

I have a measure of scepticism, having amongst others observed the Jason Zadrozny episode that knocked him out of the 2015 election a couple of months earlier, him kept under investigation for 2 years, then the case being collapsed at the door of the Court.

But the process must be allowed to run through.
Indeed I am not saying by any means he is guilty, just pointing out that the theory of a stitch up is probably no more likely
Fundamentally for me this is why Reform has a low ceiling. Just too many divergent opinions.
The problem really isn't however chlorine washed food, the problem is the us will insist we cant label there chicken as chlorine washed to distinguish it from non chlorine washed european chicken which takes away the consumer choice

Its unscientific, protectionist BS.
On food safety alone there is absolutely no argument - its safe.
I am not against having it as long as I can know as a consumer that this chicken is from the US and washed with chlorine, so I know to avoid it.
If you want to avoid it, you should feel free to do so.
I would have no reason to do so, its safe and that's all I care about.
As a professed liberal though you agree I presume people should have full information so they can avoid things they don't agree with? No different to people that will only buy free range eggs in my view

We were endlessly told the Australian deal would allow hormone beef. Then, guess what, it explicitly banned it. As it was always going to do. No-one is signing a US deal allowing chlorinated chicken. We just say no.

If you want lowest of the low chicken in the UK, farm foods will happily sell you a frozen brazilian chicken for £1.99.
Do you think it's worth sinking a trade deal over? My fear is SKS will get rolled over.
It likely wouldn't sink it, just reduce its scope.
The problem is WHY the chicken needs to be chlorine washed. It's not the chlorine that's the problem. It's the chicken!

You don't need to.
All it needs is for its country of origin to be labelled.
Anyway isn't American food more expensive that food in this country ?

I would have no reason to do so, its safe and that's all I care about.
As a professed liberal though you agree I presume people should have full information so they can avoid things they don't agree with? No different to people that will only buy free range eggs in my view
That depends.
If I go to a restaurant I get no information on the meat (unless they chose to provide it), no packaging, nor do I need it. Though restaurants can choose to engage in schemes like the Red Tractor scheme in order to market standards that people might care about.
If I go to the supermarket then its very common to see things like Red Tractor etc there.

We produce 90% of all chicken eaten here, despite any number of places we could import it from - including the EU. So american chicken would have to be a lot cheaper. And, of course, it would only be frozen. No-one's airfreighting chicken thighs.
I posted this interview yesterday before having had chance to listen to the whole thing but Scott Bessent is probably the best advocate for the Trump administration at the moment. Far more gravitas and experience than JD Vance.

Is it unsafe for human consumption?
It's the icky factor. The chicken is foul and needs to be washed in Domestos. Dog and cat food is safe for human consumption. You could have it in a curry without knowing and without harm. But most people wouldn't want to. It is a matter of choice. As long as you know what you're eating. The US doesn't want it to be labelled.

It's a bit more complex than that, because there are many products that contain chicken. How should restaurant menus show origin.
Although this is all a bit moot, because the US has been very opposed to labeling of its produce in FTAs historically, regarding such labeling as a NTB.

That's not quite true: the US has significantly more salmonella cases per capita than the UK. 26,500 people were hospitalized if the US with salmonella poisoning last year, against just just a 1,000 in the UK.
New Vodafone/VodaThree will be launching MOCN within the next month to two months, with the new company to start operating within the next four weeks.
Any other questions, do ask.

Unless the restaurant specifies you should assume they're using the cheapest ingredient available.
Which is why they often do specify eg grass fed British beef, line caught Grimsby cod etc.

Because we vaccinate chickens, right? But there are other diseases:
"According to OECD data, US citizens eat over twice as much poultry (48.8kg/capita) as EU citizens (24.2kq/capita) but the instances of Salmonella and Campylobacter per 100,000 population are only 15.45 and 13.45 in the US respectively, while in the EU they are much higher at 20.4 and 66.3. That is, Campylobacter is about 5 times more prevalent in the EU and Salmonella is 1.3 times higher in the EU than in the US. While EU illness rates vary by member states the UK has a lower level of Salmonella than both the US and the EU average at only 15.1 per 100,000. This is probably due to improved UK farming standards following Edwina Currie’s outburst in 1989 but unfortunately, UK rates of campylobacter have recently increased and are now higher than the EU average at 90 cases per 100,000 p.a. over the last 4 years."

No. Notably, Banton scored 344 not out for Somerset. Even more importantly, I can't remember the first two days of the cricket season being accompanied by such blissful weather. Things can only get worse.

Norris has a particular interest in child safety and regularly campaigns against child sexual abuse,[11] having co-written a free booklet on its prevention. He also co-wrote, produced and distributed a booklet, Don't Bully Me, giving practical advice to children across the United Kingdom on dealing with bullying.
Such is my newfound Trump paranoia, I closed my Vanilla PB window before getting to the immigration window.
AFAICS Madagascar is technically middle income, which means GNI per head of ~$1000 to ~$14000:
Lower middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $1,136 and $4,465; upper middle-income economies are those with a GNI per capita between $4,466 and $13,845
https://www.worldbank.org/en/country/mic/overview
They make up more than half of global GDP - but we need to cut out China which is about to pop into the High Income category before long, which reduced it to 35-40% of global GDP afaics.
If some of those get their act together, then that's a fair bit of heft.
Madagascar is currently being wooed by China. There's an important potential naval base there at Diego Suarez - which we used in the WW2 once we had chucked Vichy out - just off the coast of Africa.

I have not studied the Windrush cases in detail, but they have puzzled me. Where were the MPs? Where were the well known radical and very talented firms of solicitors? Normally you would expect them all to be hot on the heels of these.
Complicated
