Reform UK candidate who praised Hitler and Assad put in charge of vetting
    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/mar/16/reform-uk-candidate-who-praised-hitler-and-assad-put-in-charge-of-vetting
...Aaron made the comments as part of a pseudoscientific theory of personality types. He is the president of the self-styled World Socionics Society – a group promoting the idea that there are 16 personality types.

However, while he was one of many Reform candidates whose comments caused controversy and led to many being sacked, he is now head of vetting at Reform UK.

The role includes scouring prospective candidates’ social media outputs and advising them on what should be deleted.

Reform UK’s leader, Nigel Farage, told his party conference in September that it would be vetting candidates “rigorously at all levels” in future after more than 100 were removed before the general election..

...Days after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Aaron said that those who called Putin insane “do not understand him and limit their ability to oppose him”.

He said: “The motivation to acquire and wield force is legitimate, and there is a whole group of personality types inclined to this, and they have historically shaped the world we live in.”

In a comment on Reddit, he said that Assad was “gentle by nature” and not “some bloodthirsty tyrant who exercises control over his people with an iron fist”, adding that the dictator had been “led astray” by social stereotyping...

At the Election 2024 they dealt with those who hit the media bigly, and mainly ignored the rest.

This I think will be a problem for them this time.

Is he related to the Trump's Head of Homeland Security? She says things like that, and is a crack shot when it is her pet dog on the receiving end.
The other problem being that the criteria for being accepted as a candidate was wanting to be one. They had almost no formal system for accepting candidates let alone vetting them.

Just been reading Liz Truss's former lover, Mark Field's, gloriously indiscreet account of their affair at the Rant's website.

    What a cad! 😂

Somebody sent me that article and pointed out they finally understand the reason why I like Dave so much.

    This is what Field wrote.

David Cameron, who became Conservative leader in 2005, always gave me the impression that he had been untouched by modesty or doubt from a very early age.

Wilson was a lot younger than Starmer. He was leader at 47 and retired at 60.
Starmer is not old, but he is our oldest PM at his start than we'd had for 50 years.

Europe seems to having an assertiveness moment.

Norway responds to Russia having summoned the Norwegian Ambassador to protest against ”Norway’s militarization of the Svalbard Archipelago.”

    Norway replied:

”Svalbard is part of Norway and part of NATO"

    https://x.com/visegrad24/status/1900865460075200941

Sadly the Svalbard Treaty is rather confused so this is not perhaps as straight forward as either Norway or Russia would like to make out. It is covered by Article 9.

"Subject to the rights and duties resulting from the admission of Norway to the League of Nations, Norway undertakes not to create nor to allow the establishment of any naval base in the territories specified in Article 1 and not to construct any fortification in the said territories, which may never be used for warlike purposes."

I suppose the question that arises is whether conducting NATO exercises up there constitutes 'warlike purposes'.
Russia is in no position to complain, to hear them tell it building up invasion forces doesnt count as warlike behaviour.

Very sad, as he could well have been the cleverest man ever to be Prime Minister, given his membership of All Souls and other achievements.

He also probably knew the most economics, though as he was wedded to the flawed Keynesian economic orthodoxy of the time, and had a much too optimistic view of trade unions, he led the country into perhaps its darkest peacetime economic situation in modern times.

A decent man who, in times of great difficulty, avoided complete disaster, but, like Starmer, he only succeeded in managing decline. Arresting and reversing it takes someone like the grocer's daughter from Grantham who eventually took over.

I had a surreal moment this morning, during the sermon.

The preacher was listing things Christians should have.

His opening remark was 'one is trust.'

Due to an unfortunate echo I heard, 'One, Liz Truss.'

Which I thought was a bit strange...

Whilst his comments on Assad are just weird, his comments on Putin might, from an academic point of view, be considered valid. Simply dismissing someone like Putin as insane does indeed limit ones ability to oppose him because too many people equate insanity with lackof logical thought. That means his opponents may well underestimate him. He is also sadly correct about personality types (whether 16 or 6,000 I have no idea) who are motivated to acquire and wield force and how they dominate history.

I see nothing in those specific comments on Putin that excuses or supports him. Simply making observations which appear to me to be unfortunately, quite valid.

You can make a case to defend some of his spiel. But putting him in charge of candidate vetting ?
As I said in the OP, it's a matter of basic managerial competence.

What so you think @Morris_Dancer ?

The track record (apols) of Australia in predicting the championship is pretty dire.

Let's see how the next couple of races go.

    But they're definitely contenders.
Yeah, the Australian Grand Prix has always been one of those races that tends to throw up unusual results.

    Good morning everyone.

On CASH, this was in one of my local chip shops this week. Does anyone have any information on how much fees have been going up?

It'll be interesting to see whether the use of cash continues to rise gradually.

The US Arleigh Burke class is about $2.5bn these days.

No wonder the US are thinking of getting the Koreans to build stuff for them.

The loser in this contest will be looking for work.

Oh I agree. I just work on the basis that keeping the moral highground when it comes to treaties is always the better move.

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/mar/16/reform-uk-candidate-who-praised-hitler-and-assad-put-in-charge-of-vetting
...Aaron made the comments as part of a pseudoscientific theory of personality types.

Agree entirely. But then I am not sure I would trust anyone in a senior position in Reform to be in charge of vetting. Their basic premise would be sufficient reason for not choosing them in the first place.

Most of the mini-Musks seem to be about twelve and true believers.

First, they don't think they are doing anything wrong, because they're true believers.

Second, they're not expecting the pendulum to swing back. Whether that's because they're leading America to the Promised Land, or because the pendulum is going to stick in place with super glue, remains to be seen.

The only way the pendulum stays superglued is if Trump and his techbros deliver a miracle of economic growth. Their ability to do that is what powers their vision; their ability to deliver on it currently seems distinctly optimistic.

If the pendulum swings an equal distance in the other direction, I expect the techbros to be stripped of everything they own.

Trump has, apparently, banned citizens of the following countries from travelling to the US. Some I can understand, unless they're refugees of course, but what has Bhutan done wrong?

The list is:~ Afghanistan, Bhutan, Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Yemen.

I think it is all to do with applications for refugees status. There's a surprisingly large number of Bhutanese refugees (mostly of Nepali ethnicity) in the world, mostly in the USA.

I think "president of the self-styled World Socionics Society" is more damaging. That's like Bobby J standing up in Parliament and asserting that the Qabbalah, or Theosophy, had a lot of the answers we all need to hear.

It's not David Icke and his Space Lizards, or blaming the Djinn, but it's on the same spectrum. Doing Ouija board for fun or a hobby is OK and would be accepted; it's when it is made a basis for public philosophy or policy or a serious lens for interpreting history that it becomes clear that he is off his trolley.

It suggests Farage is at home with fruitcakes and loonies, as well as closet racists.

IMO Putin is ruthless and rational, and a very experienced manipulator who has Mr Trump wrapped around his little finger.

When the pendulum inevitably swings back, it is going to be brutal about what Trump and his racist/misogynist ilk have been doing.
I'm not sure what damage will have been done, and whether it will be reparable. If Trump gets through with laying waste to the state, it will take decades to recover just the ability for a developed society to function.

I still think they will need a period of significant reform, as has only happened afaik twice before - in the period after the Civil War, and in the 1950s/1960s when they were sorting out the legacy of Jim Crow, segregation and so on. Each period involved several Amendments to the Constitution.

That needs quite special circumstances in the Presidency / Capitol, and also in the states collectively.

They are going to have to significantly restrict Presidential Pardons, for one thing. And also do something with the Supreme Court.

Congress can do part of it (eg if I have it right some SCOTUS reforms), but not all of it.

Trump has, apparently, banned citizens of the following countries from travelling to the US. Some I can understand, unless they're refugees of course, but what has Bhutan done wrong?

I think we are just about at the point where people lower down the chain need to start asking if 'I was only obeying orders' will be a sufficient defence to save their jobs.

I mean, would you want to be the person identified as actually doing the removing of MoH recipients from the Arlington Cemetery website?
    Well, obviouly, I wouldn't!
I assume that like most other millitary associated organisations in the US, the people working there are likely to be Vets themselves. So to rephrase it, what Vet in their right ind would want to be the one identified as having removed MoH recipients based on their race?

I would definitely be looking for new job sooner rather than later.
It's interesting that the more plutocrat media outlets in America, like Forbes, as well as the more mainstream outlets like CNN, are beginning to give Sanders' increasingly large rallies, more and more coverage, which they never did before. Forbes TV was never a vehicle for prigressive'-populism.

It's because they can see that his groundswell, and his "fight oligarchy" tour, might actually be the only resistance to Trump destroying not only the administrative state, but the economy, too.

Utter class from Mark Carney. I found myself in the probably unusual position of greatly admiring his work as Governor despite him making no secret of his views about Brexit. I also admired how he bullied the ECB into allowing various Euro transactions to be done in London. Canada are fortunate to have such quality of leadership. I wish we did.

    Wow. Fairly despicable.

A classified dossier compiled by Sir Richard Dearlove, the former head of MI6, was passed to then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson at the start of the outbreak in March 2020 which stated: 'It is now beyond reasonable doubt that Covid-19 was engineered in the Wuhan Institute of Virology'.

The file, marked 'Secret – Recipient's Eyes Only' argued that Beijing was pushing a fake narrative that the virus had originated in an animal market. The dossier, compiled by a group of eminent academics and intelligence experts and seen by The Mail on Sunday, said China even retrospectively manipulated viral samples to give credence to the deception.

But the argument is said to have been dismissed by Patrick Vallance, who was a familiar face during the pandemic as he flanked Mr Johnson at No 10 news conferences.

Or Trump and co. resort to violence, to keep the pendulum in place.

No they didn't. The Bank of England claims that the LDI crisis was responsible for 75% of the market instability at the time. And they're hardly likely to give themselves more blame than necessary.

It must be the first sign of a mid-life crisis this full stops thing.

One of the things I’ve read, which I’d rather not have read about (like Sturmbrigade Dirlewanger, or Unit 731), was just how appalling the treatment was the treatment of women soldiers, captured by the Germans. If they could, they would kill themselves to avoid capture.

    Linky plz?
    Enjoy!

So she wrecked a marriage and then she wrecked the economy and the Tory party, however Liz herself ploughs on regardless, her marriage remains intact and though she lost her seat and premiership she is more in demand amongst the uber libertarian right conferences in the US than ever
She may have wrecked a marriage (though it does take two to tango) but she didn't wreck the economy (it grew during her short tenure, and benefited from her cancelling Sunak's National Insurance hike, and would have benefited even more from her cancelling his Corporation Tax hike. Nor did she wreck the Tory Party - the polling shows this to be false.

And use full stops you pillock.
Her unfunded tax cuts crashed the markets. The Tories fell from over 30% when Boris resigned to under 25% under her leadership

Yeah, the Tories go off a cliff in September and October 2022.

Interesting he's saying it out loud.

    New statement made by Macron:

“Those who buy Patriot systems should be offered the new generation Franco-Italian SAMP/T. Those who buy F-35s should be offered Rafale."

The statement was made after news about both Canada and Portugal potentially moving away from buying F-35s.

He’s just shilling for the French defence industry there
Indeed, there is a point that Trump needs to see that there is a cost to US jobs and industry by turning its back on Europe/NATO and supporting Russia.

My photo of the day is Newcastle Central station last night.

Can't be Newcastle - they've got too many clothes on.
Must be visitors from somewhere soft and Southern, like Hartlepool.
    Mackems
    Hartlepudlians are 'Monkey Hangers'.
I do know, what living up here and all.

I’m simply applying the same terminology to mackems.
