So she's given me the rack of local lamb (from the best local farmshop) that she was going to cook

There's a whole.pound of it, so I've decided to just make a red wine, garlic and herb (rosemary, thyme and chives) sauce to go with

Even minus fat and bones, a pound of French trimmed lamb rack has to be enough for one?

There have been recurrent shortages of various pharmaceuticals in recent years. It never used to be a thing.

Partly international issues, but also the NHS has been using its purchasing power so aggressively that when supplies run short they go to countries that pay more.

If we can suspend enough of Wiltshire by twenty metres or so, the A303 can just run underneath and we don't need a bypass.

It all seems a bit hysterical TBH.

Here's a challenge for PBers. Complete the following sentence without mentioning Donald Trump.

Kamela Harris will make a great President because...

She is worse than every single predecessor who has won the nomination to be a presidential candidate, with the exception of the person she is standing against.
And there's the problem. If the Dems continue to polling day with their only message being "Trump is an unstable fascist" or variants of, then they will lose. They need to find some sort of positive message too.
The Dems have a plenty positive message. Trump has a deeply cynical negative one. If Trump wins it won't be due to a lack of positivity from the Dems.
Could you tell me what the positive message is please.
Defence of freedoms, opportunity for all, more well paying jobs, better economic security, a better deal for renters, better provision of public third level education etc

    https://kamalaharris.com/issues/

Meanwhile the top campaign message for Trump:
    THEY’RE NOT AFTER ME,
    THEY’RE AFTER YOU …
I’M JUST STANDING IN THE WAY!

Writing as an asthmatic of 80 years standing, and a pharmacist, albeit now retired, why not go to a pharmacy, explain the circumstances and buy one.
Of course, you could do what I do and ALWAYS have a spare!
I tried that they said they cant sell me one....told me to ring nhs 111 to send them an emergency prescription spent two days now going in circles where they tell me they can't do it unless I goto the walk in centre which I cant get to as I have no car
You aren't registered with a GP, so where have your previous prescriptions come from?

Pharmacists will dispense in anticipation of a repeat prescription if you regularly fill prescriptions with them. If not then they cannot provide Prescription Only Medicines.
Depends to some extent on the POM. IIRC, and I have bought a ventolin while on holiday, something like that is allowed, although a record has to be kept, similar to a private prescription.
Of course, I might be out of date, TBF.

I used to reorder online but apparently they wont do that now unless I am registered with a gp and generally got them next day. Frankly I don't want to register with a gp because they are a waste of space and I object to them getting money for me being on their books when if I am ill they won't actually see me

I however do object to registering with a gp because they get paid for having me on their list despite providing no services as far as I can see apart from letting me get a repeat prescription of something I was diagnosed with 30 years ago....if I am ill...oh you can have an appointment in 3 weeks....yes I object to them getting money for that

Funny how lamb sandwiches are not really a thing.
Hot lamb in pita bread sandwiches have been known..

Hardly ever cold lamb, though. It goes too tough
Round here, even shish kebabs seem to be dying out. Doners, yes, but are less obviously healthy than shish aka lamb salad.
A farmer friend of mine says that shearing costs more than the fleece is worth, but on the other hand the meat sells well as long as its halal. That's where his profit comes from now.
It is absolutely scandalous that we have been forced to have halal in this country
We arent forced. My farmer friend is merely giving his customers what they want.

Or to the victims of the hurricane:

So an asthma attack will cost the a couple of thousand rather than just issuing the fucking prescription

There's an ongoing problem with inhaler prescriptions for some reason. My daughter us having serous problems getting a replacement in reasonable time, as one runs out.
I used to reorder online but apparently they wont do that now unless I am registered with a gp and generally got them next day. Frankly I don't want to register with a gp because they are a waste of space and I object to them getting money for me being on their books when if I am ill they won't actually see me
Forgive me for a total lack of sympathy. You can't be bothered to register with a GP because GPs are a 'waste of space' but if you had registered with a GP you wouldn't have this issue.

Self-inflicted crisis - I hope you don't have cause to regret it.
Since I moved I am either at work...or dealing with my fathers dementia....real life kept pushing it down the list. I however do object to registering with a gp because they get paid for having me on their list despite providing no services as far as I can see apart from letting me get a repeat prescription of something I was diagnosed with 30 years ago....if I am ill...oh you can have an appointment in 3 weeks....yes I object to them getting money for that
If you are asthmatic, even if the condition is mild and apparently under control, an annual review is indicated.

Did any of those things happen between 2016 and 2020? Not really.
Trump did try to overthrow the election via slates of fake electors, though.

He did actually try to subvert democracy. Nothing else really matters, as I see it.
How much of the American conversation has touched on the January 6 question?

From several thousand miles away, it's clear that it's not as simple as that. But in the good timeline, it would be that simple, wouldn't it?
January the 6th is absurd to blame on Trump, outside of sore loser. The other stuff about trying to pressure electors etc. but the Jan 6th is preposterous, truly preposterous. He called on a a rally, claimed he had been cheated, and told the crowd the march peacefully.
"I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard."

There is no getting away of his intent, which was a peaceful display of defiance.
Indeed, and his heroic defiance of the mob on the steps of the Capitol, where with soaring oratory he espoused the virtues of the US Constitution and of democracy itself, was perhaps the most inspiring moment in American history since Gettysburg.

His selfless campaigning of behalf of the injured police officers, often unreported, shows his commitment to peace and the rule of law. Not since Carter have we seen such a successful post-Presidency.

This has had a profound effect on the Right across the English-speaking world, with recent demonstrations in England noted for their peaceful nature and their perseverance through "two-tier" policing.
I think the riots in the uk were more to do with a disturbing tendency for asylum seekers and their descendants to get a bit stabby with the natives, and the news of regular murders and attempted murders to become afterthoughts in the news cycle.
    “Asylum seekers and their descendants”
It’s like there is a complete collective memory hole of the event that preceded the riots a few months ago.
    “And their descendants”
Who was Wilderness before the name change. Too many racists on here at the moment

You aren't registered with a GP, so where have your previous prescriptions come from?

Pharmacists will dispense in anticipation of a repeat prescription if you regularly fill prescriptions with them. If not then they cannot provide Prescription Only Medicines.
Err because I was registered with a gp before I moved to devon two years ago which last filled the prescription and yes the inhaler I lost was probably out of date
In that case you should still be registered with your previous GP, who should be able to access their records and issue a repeat.
I doubt that I a told them I wasn't on their books anymore as they were useless
Should also add I don't want to register at my local gp's as they are even worse
Well that ought to teach 'em.
Why should they be paid for not giving any service? Please explain...if I am ill they won't see me till I am either better or dead....I have been asthmatic for a long time 30 odd years so the work diagnosing that is nil
The service is repeat prescriptions, but for that there need to be records.

The per-capita element of GP pay is a bit "win some, lose some" some registered patients never need an appointment, others are in every week.

I don't know if it applies to all pharmacies now, but my local one (Boots) will not provide or sell an inhaler without a valid prescription. Personally I'd love to have a spare, but that's not possible. In fact it's difficult to even have one inhaler as my GP surgery randomly fails to issue prescriptions without a week of me chasing them, and then they often don't specify the exact type of inhaler which causes the pharmacy to dispense the NHS' preferred eco-friendly powder inhaler, which is pretty much useless (for me anyway). So I have to chase them again for a new script.

    It really is a shambles.

I am only marginally inclined to argue this with you as you will probably never be convinced but, here goes...

How do you know your local GPs 'are even worse' if you are not registered with them?

Our GP service is very good, e.g. last week I noticed a lump on my forehead, I used their online contact form and was called later that day with a face to face appointment booked for two days later. Now, maybe we are extraordinarily lucky or you are very unlucky but I don't imagine the service on average is any worse in Devon than Dorset.

If, as you say, by not registering with a local GP you prevent them receiving payments for you, rest assured those payments will be going elsewhere, you won't be getting a tax refund.

It just oozes the sophisticated 1930s. Apt.
It’s the archetypal Sunday evening theme for me. I was just a little young really to appreciate Howard’s way as a Sunday anthem. Poirot was on during my impressionable pre-teens.

    That and Songs of Praise.

The strange combination of comfort and a kind of British Hygge, with the dread prospect of another weekend over and Monday tomorrow.

My Mum has had a very busy weekend and decided not to bother cooking tonight; her and Dad are having a takeaway curry

I'll know in about an hour

Oh you brute! Rack of lamb!.. FFS.

I'm having a chilli, although there is a vaguely enticing aspect that I've been stewing some dried chillis for several hours - one has become huge! It'll be just chilli though and the best bit will probably be the hefty cheese contrast.
Fillet steaks with peppercorn sauce in chez Malc
Are you any good as a cook? I'm not although once or twice in my life I've stumbled into getting it right. I've never got a steak right though, but in part that's due to smoke alarms.
if smoke alarms are going off you are over cooking it
Possibly, but steak cooked rare in very hot butter can definitely set off a smoke alarm if it's too close to the hob
Smoke detectors in kitchens are a bit silly; you need a heat detector.

My smoke alarms have all been disabled admittedly so maybe butter fried would set them off however I never cook steaks more that 5 seconds a side either
That sounds like the way to do it - but at 5s a side you'll produce smoke that's set my neighbours fire alarms off, not just mine.

Your nihilism is always entertaining, but 5 seconds per side for a steak is quite something! That’s basically steak tartare with sunburn.

I just cooked my onglet steak. I reckon at least a couple of minutes on the first side and a minute on the second, and 20 minutes resting, and it was lovely and pink.

Here is an example of nhs waste for you. Two days now since I lost my ventolin inhaler and cant get a prescription.....fighting with national health 111 all I am asking for is give me an emergency prescription in case I have an attack....they keep insisting despite having been prescribed it for 40 odd years I have to goto a walk in centre I can't actually get to rather than just issuing the prescription to get me through...if I have an asthma attack tonight the nhs will have to raise an ambulance.....get me in ed....give me oxygen etc...its not like its a dangerous or addictive drug

So an asthma attack will cost the a couple of thousand rather than just issuing the fucking prescription

Why do I need a gp for that when I know what I need is an inhaler prescription. GP's are largely worthless for the majority of people
well, it is a prescription only medicine, and GPs can write these. They may be a bit more useful than you think.
So there use is they can write a prescription for something you have already been diagnosed with?

They in my case get £137 pounds per year for writing me a repeat perscription once a year for an inhaler....then you wonder why we think the nhs is wasting money

Which is a service provided by the GP, or at least someone in his or her team.
No it really isn't. I can tell if its getting worse by my inhaler usage. It is box ticking
I promise you, it isn’t. It might seem like it sometimes, but having both seen it as an observer and experienced it as an asthmatic it can be very valuable.

Any interaction really with the NHS tells you that it is astonishingly inefficient. Many people must die each year for this simple reason. They're also terribly ineffective. The whole diagnosis and treatment plan is really quite poor. Again there are people dying because of this - that's their primary cause of death - the NHS.

Vast numbers are served well by the NHS though. The whole clapping nonsense during covid highlighted that, and whilst a bit daft, was clearly not misplaced.

On the topic of Sunday music, I've been listening to gospel all day today

My favourite gospel song is Just A Closer Walk With Me. This might be because it's in the opening scene of of one my favourite movies, White Men Can't Jump

Woody is looking for a game at Venice Beach and asks the old dudes. The ask for a donation, so he gives them a dollar. They give him a dollar's worth

    Best dollar he ever spent

My favourite video of the song, even though the audio quality is ropey, is this one of Mahalia Jackson at the Newport jazz festival. Louis Armstrong comes on stage to sing with her near the end

There are lots of inefficiencies in the NHS and while productivity improvements via investment in tech, capital equipment and training are all needed there are some things that would improve it with little cost. Indeed I have been stewing some of these myself.

They in my case get £137 pounds per year for writing me a repeat perscription once a year for an inhaler....then you wonder why we think the nhs is wasting money
as I said "win some, lose some"

For the average patient it is 5-6 consultations per year, so excellent value at £137.

It would be nearly twice that for a single private consultation at Spire.
The average patient on a gp list? Is that one of those twisted statistics in which 65% of people in the list don’t see their doctor from decade to the next, and 5% twice a week?

It all seems a bit hysterical TBH.

Here's a challenge for PBers. Complete the following sentence without mentioning Donald Trump.

Kamela Harris will make a great President because...

… she won’t sell Ukraine down the river, crash the world economy, or knobble the Biden administration’s programs to rebuild US infrastructure and manufacturing.

    For a start.

(Btw, arguing it’s hysterical to quote Trump’s own words, and say we should take them seriously is… interesting.
You’re aware of the etymology of ‘hysterical’ ?)
Biden/Harris have sold Ukraine down the river and got a lot of people killed in the process. How can you defend their record?
I just have to remember that Trump got impeached for refusing to help Ukraine, has refused when pressed to say he will help Ukraine, and whose avowed peace plan involves i) forcing Ukraine to surrender its lost territory and accept a "unequal treaty", and ii) wait for Russia to break that treaty, like they have done so many times before.

Well that's a disappointment - I really did think they'd developed some brains and/or balls.
I was surprised the Tories didn't do more with their Freeports scheme. As a fiscal or industrial policy they're a nonsense, but as a mine of PR opportunities they are pure gold.

You can have the announcement, the master plan reveal, the announcement of the first tenants, the earth breaking ceremony the opening of the first building etc etc. Loads of opportunities for politicians to dress up in hi vis jackets and hard hats. You can spin this out for years without needing to get to the stage of the freeports not working in practice, before the other lot get into power.

I had to had a tooth out a few years ago and had to be referred to nhs hospital to have this done.

Dentist did all the x-rays, sent them with referral to hospital. Letter from hospital, book an appointment, turn up, they then take the same x-rays again because they lost the dentist ones, then told to go away, another letter, come for a consultation, go to that, oh yes you need the tooth extracted (we knew that already), go away, letter book an appointment, another consultation about the procedure, go away, another letter, book for procedure, attend that, oh no that's too tricky for me with certain bit of kit (that is why i am bloody here, as dentist can't do it), go away another letter, book for procedure, finally get it done. Took 6 months start to finish for 15 mins job, it just needed a bit of kit the dentist didn't have.

Replacement tooth, same dentist, go get a scan at this private clinics tomorrow, turn up, 5 mins, scan set to dentist, dentist rings next day, got scan, come next week, plus another month down the line, all booked in one go.

I don't know. I just do. In comparison, I love Lord Peter Whimsey and Harriet Vane.

There's something about Poirot's manner, in the books and in the (admittedly brilliant) TV series with David Suchet. It turns my stomach. I also don't like Miss Marple, but nowhere near to the same degree.

And I can't really see why. But that's the thing about art: some people can love something, whilst others hate it.

I saw the good and bad at first hand, a fortnight ago.

My wife had a bad fall in Italy, and had to go hospital. The ambulance was admirably swift, as was her admission to treatment.

The Italian doctor was a complete pig, who wrote a pack of lies on her medical report, we realised, upon getting it translated.

On returning home, she felt very ill, so we went to A & E. Lengthy waits, but the staff were (with one exception, who preferred to watch porn on his I phone), very kind and helpful.

We’ve reached a geopolitical outlook as disturbing as the 1930’s.

In two weeks’ time the USA might have ceased to be an ally to the UK and Europe. We’ve had ample warning that we have to step up, but we preferred to free ride.

Poland and the Baltic States have ramped up military spending, but most European leaders (including UK Conservatives), think that “International Law” is enough of a defence.

Even minus fat and bones, a pound of French trimmed lamb rack has to be enough for one?

I'll know in about an hour

Oh you brute! Rack of lamb!.. FFS.

I'm having a chilli, although there is a vaguely enticing aspect that I've been stewing some dried chillis for several hours - one has become huge! It'll be just chilli though and the best bit will probably be the hefty cheese contrast.

    Exactly that
My smoke alarms have all been disabled admittedly so maybe butter fried would set them off however I never cook steaks more that 5 seconds a side either
Another small victory for 'Pagan against the system', eh?
I'm with Pagan on this. I dislike all alarms. More trouble than they're worth. Ditto almost all insurance. Don't do any of that stuff.

My Mum has had a very busy weekend and decided not to bother cooking tonight; her and Dad are having a takeaway curry

That not nilhism nor am i one...just saying steak is best when its body temp for a cow

“Well then, cook, you see this … steak of yours was so very bad, that I have put it out of sight as soon as possible; you see that, don’t you? Well, for the future, when you cook another … steak for my private table here, the capstan, I’ll tell you what to do so as not to spoil it by overdoing. Hold the steak in one hand, and show a live coal to it with the other; that done, dish it; d’ye hear?
