Donald Trump’s rallies are going so poorly that Kamala Harris just played a highlight reel at her rally tonight.

If his rallies are going so poorly and recent polls have Harris ahead how do we account for his 1.79 price on bf? Too short surely?

I've now gone down a rabbithole of prehistoric jokes. This site (https://historyfacts.com/arts-culture/article/5-of-the-oldest-jokes-in-history/ - I don't think it is definitive) suggests the oldest known joke in the world is from ancient Sumeria, and goes:

"Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband’s lap.”

Not uproariously funny, but it has farting in it, so relatable.
The site also identifies the oldest 'walked into a bar' joke, which has definitely lost something in the translation or over the years:

“A dog walks into a bar and says, ‘I cannot see a thing. I’ll open this one.’”

We also have a fourth century BC Greek joke book, which contains things syntactically recognisable as jokes, including this one which has endured to the present day and which may possibly be the world's oldest extant joke:

“Asked by the court barber how he wanted his hair cut, the witty fellow replied: ‘In silence.’”

    Last one is quite good.

Barbers clearly masters of banal and inane chatter even in ancient times.

It's a good question. I think there's a feeling he will outperform his polling as he did in 2016 and 2020. Also an expectation that the GOP structural edge in PV to EC mapping will persist. If you factor in both of those things (which I don't) it's correct to make him about a 1.75 fav.

Yes and also what NOTA says about his legal advantage given he has the SC in his pocket. If it's very VERY close that could be decisive. I have no problem with him being priced as fav right now. Nevertheless I think he's going to lose.

    Policy announcement from Harris:

    https://x.com/kamalaharris/status/1845993766441644386

    • Provide 1 million loans that are fully forgivable up to $20k for Black entrepreneurs and others to start a business
    • Support education training, and mentorship programs that lead to good-paying jobs for Black men, including pathways to become teachers
    • Protect cryptocurrency investments so Black men who make them know their money is safe
    • Launch a national health initiative focused on the illnesses that disproportionately impact Black men
    • Legalize recreational marijuana and create opportunities for Black Americans to succeed in this new industry

This has got to be a spoof, right?

"Protect cryptocurrency investments so Black men who make them know their money is safe"

Is probably the most insane policy I've seen. Are they going to have a race bar on an investment value protection scheme?

Mr. Cookie, Augustus was once passing by a field in which the farm was starting to plough the land around the family graveyard. He called to the farmer that he was truly cultivating his father's memory.

This isn't a joke per se, but a funny moment happened in the reign of Philip V of Macedon. He attacked a city by surprise, intending a midnight escalade. Very daring. Except somebody has miscalculated and the siege ladders were too short, so he had to give up and go home.

A miracle health intervention that has been shown to drastically improve health, which has led to the first fall in age-adjusted US obesity rates in decades. And this government decides to focus its use on the least rather than most productive members of society, while lecturing the rest not to be fat.

Lecturing doesn’t work. Our microbiomes and metabolisms have been fecked by Monsanto, Caryle, Tate & Lyle and the rest. If the US can get 1/8 Americans on Ozempik than so should we.

It's not restricted to the unemployed though.

Ozempic sounds great but I think perhaps taxing the kind of crap that leads to people getting obese might remain a important part of the solution? Perhaps more sport and active travel?

Given current rates of childhood obesity, we will end up medicating millions of children at massive cost just to help them resist the addictive poison food manufacturers put in their products.

NHS spending will just continue to grow, especially if Ozempic has long term health implications or the other effects of crap food is not mitigated by it. A typical case of privatise the profits, nationalise the costs.
    Indeed.

Once again - I would like to see a Vitality style trial. Tangible incentives for exercise and health stats. A few free cinema tickets and even the Office I Never Exercise guy was taking the dog for extra walks…
We still feed our children far too much shit in this country and too few learn to cook. Witness the ridiculous “sorry but my child can’t eat food” mums who insist their offspring are somehow incapable of consuming fresh fish, meat or vegetables. Make school lunches compulsory, and high quality, but have just one option on the menu, plus a vegetarian version. Ban all snacks. Take food out of the hands of fussy parents who pass their neuroses on to their children.
Better yet if you have a moment could you knock up a set of guidelines to let people how they should live and bring up their children.

It would likely save the NHS billions and also avoid all that absurd fuss that people seem to make about individual choices and whatnot.
No. Read my post. I'm talking about school lunches. The system I describe above is broadly that used in France. I'd say 50% of what's offered to my son at his comp is shite. Why are they selling it to children?
Because we don't want to pay more taxes to improve it. You have yourself to blame.
The vast array of choice (and waste) at my son's comp costs £££.

One quality meal plus a vegetarian option, for all.

    As in France.

Will save the nation £££ in the medium term.
I'm guessing that school meals in the UK are rigidly constructed so as to have the required amount of nutrition and so forth.

    Meanwhile I don't know if "£££" means a lot or a little.
    LOL.

“A dog walks into a bar and says, ‘I cannot see a thing. I’ll open this one.’” - I love this one. It absolutely sounds like it should be hilarious, but we are missing some context which contemporaries would have understood as a ubiquitous part of their everyday life. If we could figure out what makes it funny, we'd probably understand something profound about the experience of being an ordinary person, 4,000 years ago.
Maybe it was a thing and remarked upon a lot to do with dogs lying around sleeping all the time that even when they walk into a bar they have eyes closed so the dog decides it might be necessary to open one eye?

Or the joke is that the dog talks.
  • The key take-away from this is the fact the US electoral sysyem is not fit for purpose if the purpose is to reflect the votes cast. On the other hand it is very fit for purpose if you want to rig the result - whether legally or illegally. The Dems are no angels in this but the Reps have made it an art which is why Reps are the ones blocking reform.

Agree. Give PC Plod a break. He has to know a lot more law than our lawmaker MPs do. He has to put it into effect perfectly in the middle of a riot/affray/row while at risk of every detail beiong videoed and while in personal danger. He has to be accountable at the lawyers' expansive leisure in court 6 months later when questioned by 6 better paid KCs about instantaneous judgments in conflicted moments. And he has a duty to try to keep the peace when his critics massed on the street want to make trouble for him and each other. If he is found to lie he may lose his job. If defendants lie that's just normal and no-one cares.

There’s not the level of animosity towards Harris . Clinton was very much a marmite character.

And if Dobbs had happened before 2016 Clinton would still have won inspite of that . Most pollsters have also modified their methodology to try and combat their underestimate of Trump support in the swing states .

As an aside: it is far from Gladwell's best book (come to mention it, the Bomber Mafia was rubbish too), but the NY Times review is a much better takedown of it than John Gray's, not least because Mr Gray seemed far more interested - Mathew Goodwin style - of just repeating the same old tropes.

Why is black unnecessarily capitalised throughout?

Points 1 and 3 are tailor-made for fraud on an epic scale. Points 2 and 4 are overamibitous and clearly discriminatory and point 5 may well do rather more harm than good.

    Fail.
Any policy which says it will protect people from losses against crypto investment is insane. So I could push money into a 100 or so shit coins, have my money back for the 99 that lose and bank 100x gains on the one that doesn't?
Surely the protection should be that if you invest in 100 shitcoins then you can back 100 shitcoins whatever their value is at the time ?

Coinbase tells me my holdings of 0.13349 ETH and 0.000832 BTC and 1837.46 SHIB are worth £265.54, £41.56 and £0.02 respectively. Surely the only job of the regulator is to ensure I can trade those back for £265.54, £41.56 and £0.02 if I wanted to at this moment.
Not to make sure that if I had say spent £1837 on the SHIB (I can assure you all this isn't the case !) and it was worth £0.02 now that I'd be protected for the £1837.

I saw that clip and it is a blimmin' minefield if you are plod. They were trying as best they could to avoid talking about it at all, trying to remain neutral, and using what vocabulary and tools they were able.

    A weak gotcha imo.
But shouldn't police officers know which organisations are proscribed terrorist groups?
I mean yes, maybe. They evidently just didn't want to get involved and hadn't heard of Hezbollah. I bet there are a zillion proscribed groups. But yes, I don't know exactly what is and what isn't allowed - ie flying the Hezbollah flag is illegal - and perhaps they should have known that.

But I still have a degree of sympathy for them.

No. They really don't need to know if the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam is a proscribed organisation unless they work in counter terrorism or if it is relevant to a case they are on.

Your expectations are quite bizarre. I bet most terrorism lawyers and senior diplomats wouldn't know the full list without checking it.

I can't find the comparable figures for 2020.

There’s not the level of animosity towards Harris . Clinton was very much a marmite character.

And if Dobbs had happened before 2016 Clinton would still have won inspite of that . Most pollsters have also modified their methodology to try and combat their underestimate of Trump support in the swing states .
The figures I found for 2016 had Clinton on a net -12. So, as you say, Harris is a lot more popular/less unpopular than Clinton.

The thing that most people seem to gloss over is that Trump was at a net -21 in 2016, but he's now only at -9.7.

Trump 2024 is apparently a lot less unpopular than Trump 2016.

Bollox Topping , the amount of money squandered by our halfwitted politicians is unbelievable, if they got their finger out , sorted out public service etc then we coudl do all these things easily. 22B on Milicrap's stupid carbon capture crap instead of sticking it in the black hole of his napper.

Business investment has been too low in the UK over decades.

Labour has been cheap following the unemployment in the 80s and freedom of movement in the 00's.

Is there a correlation between the two?

Recently we have low unemployment, minimum wage increases and now likely employer NIC increases. All of which increases the cost of labour.

This could encourage substitution in the form of capital investment (plant and machine, IT, AI etc).

Consistent approach to encourage more businesses investment?

The vast array of choice (and waste) at my son's comp costs £££.

One quality meal plus a vegetarian option, for all.

    As in France.

Will save the nation £££ in the medium term.
I'm guessing that school meals in the UK are rigidly constructed so as to have the required amount of nutrition and so forth.

    Meanwhile I don't know if "£££" means a lot or a little.
    LOL.
Don't get me started on nutritional balanced meals. When I was in hospital for a few weeks every meal HAD to be balanced. Now that is not normal. A balanced diet is over a week, or more. Your body is pretty good at obtaining the nutrients it needs from the food it consumes. Its almost like millions of years of evolution have made it that way.

So you don't need every meal to be perfect, just aim for it in the longer term.

Obviously that's not what anybody's proposing.

But a lot of (most?) cryptocurrency investors lose money to fraud. There are a lot of things governments could do to make this happen less. I have zero confidence that the Harris administration will manage to do that since the Biden administration is actively making the problem worse but it's definitely possible.

Yes, that's logically true, but it's also kinda irrelevant.

The Harris campaign cannot redistribute Democratic voters from California to Pennsylvania. They're mostly stuck with the geographical distribution of voters as it is.

There's a limited amount they can do to appeal specifically to voters in the swing states, to the extent that the swing state voters are identifiably different, but mostly if you're ahead by enough nationality then you'll end up being ahead by enough in the swing states.

I don't think Harris is ahead by enough.

Bob Monkhouse was a comic genius, and hailed from the old era of comedians - not the modern discursive, story telling types. His comic timing and delivery was perfect.

I flagged up the 538 favourability averages as something to watch a while ago. Since then these have moved not necessarily in a manner to Harris' advantage.

    She's now down to a net +0.1, while Trump's score is -9.7.

On the face of it that looks like a large advantage for Harris, but Clinton had a +9 edge vs Trump in 2016, and that wasn't enough then.

I can't find the comparable figures for 2020.

As with all FPTP elections, which is what the electoral college is, it comes down to how the vote is distributed rather than how many votes there are.

Harris is probably targeting her campaigning better than Clinton did.

Hmm I'd disagree - on rallies they're marshalling they ought to know who the main relevant proscribed terrorist organisations are (As defined by the Gov't, so the crowd or plod's opinion is irrelevant). For the current rallies that's المقاومة الإسلامية في لبنان (More commonly known as Hez or Hizbollah (The party of God)) and حركة المقاومة الإسلامية, more commonly known as Hamas (Harakat al-Muqawamah al-Islamiyyah)).
Now if a Palestinian Islamic Jihad flag was being flown (Also a terrorist group) you could excuse the ignorance - but to be aknowledgeable about either of the big two is, how can I put this extremely convienient for Plod policing the rally...

Presumably drug dealing businesses will be eligible for the $20bn in fully forgivable loans.
Once again, to point out that to legalise drugs without legalising and regulating the entire chain, from creation to consumption is insane.

Carr can be an acquired taste, and like food and drink we all have our preferences. Where he is interesting is on the edges of how far you can push humour. Can you make jokes about the queen dying on the day she dies, or do you need to wait (how long?). Billy Connolly was pulled up by a heckler at a gig over a joke about an Isis hostage being decapitated. I'm not going to say right or wrong, but everyone has a line.

We've seen multiple cases in recent times of the police behaving in ways we, as a society, don't agree with. Lacking respect for victims of murder etc. And yet none of use (or few at any rate) have to deal with the things that the police sometimes do. My father, the ex-policeman, says that the humour can be very dark, as a way to cope. What's happened in some cases is that the humour is no longer down the pub, but on WhatsApp and that then becomes an issue. Personally I think police should be able to post whatever shit they want on personal WhatsApp groups, as long as their behaviour at work meets acceptable standards. But not everyone will agree.

It might be Byron. Some lines from Beppo and maybe Don Juan can induce a genuine chortle

Harris's rather wacky pronouncement on Crypto, among other things. A pitch to Black males that the democrats are losing ground with, as suspected by some.

"Those statements easily constitute the most outright pro-crypto positions ever put forth by Harris or her campaign. Previously, the Democratic presidential nominee had only ever referenced the industry in passing. She had never offered commitments to any concrete pro-crypto policies, something her opponent, former president Donald Trump, has been pitching for months.

It is notable not only that Harris finally appears to have committed to a full-throated stance on the issue, but also that she has done so within the very particular context of attempting to woo Black male voters—a demographic that has long been crucial to Democrats, but that the Harris campaign has recently expressed concern about losing ground with in 2024."

    LOL.
    Knock yourself out.

In 2016 Clinton lost the tipping point state by 0.77%, and won the national vote by 2.1%. So the Electoral College would have been on a knife edge (assuming UNS) with a national vote margin of 2.9.

In 2020 Biden won the tipping point state by 0.63%, and won the national vote by 4.5%. So the Electoral College would have been a knife edge with a Biden lead of 3.9.

Biden's vote distribution was less efficient than Clinton's, but he won because he was far enough ahead nationally. You won't read that in the popular histories, which all credit Biden's victory to his appeal to Midwestern states, and criticise Clinton for not campaigning enough there.

Yes, you get lots of accepted wisdoms that don't really stand up. Eg that HRC lost because of complacency about the rust belt. Often cited is her failing to visit Wisconsin. Ok, but she visited Pennsylvania many many times and yet lost there by more than she lost Wisconsin.

The owner of Vauxhall will decide whether to close its UK plants within 'the next few weeks'.

Stellantis, Europe's second-largest car maker, has been weighing up its options for months amid a row with the Government over quotas for electric vehicles (EVs).

Tavares urged the Government to 'help to stimulate the demand' if they want firms such as Stellantis to sell a higher proportion of electric cars. He said the government threshold for green sales was about double 'natural' levels of demand.

Car manufacturers have been making losses on British production almost universally for years, including before Brexit. As is the case in all Western European countries they tend to exit markets kicking and screaming.

Have you seen Bob Monkhouse's "The Business of Comedy"? It's fascinating watching him in his "chat show/LE" persona but asking questions that he and his interviewee have clearly discussed "seriously" in the green room.

I saw him at a corporate event

His off TV show would probably be banned these days
the clown should be banned for being teh unfunniest comedian in the country ( joint top when saddo Corden gets back ).
I must admit, I didn't have Bob Monkhouse down as today's target for Malc's fury.
Put your specs on cookie , I was talking Carr
Agree; I don't Carr at all funny.

    Inc photos of murder victims?

Eh? How on earth was I to infer that from the chain above?
    It started here cookie ,

Huh, ok. A bit tangled, but I'll go with the intention.
Disagree with you on Carr preference though. Alan Carr is my least favourite comedian by some way.
I was using the comparison with Jimmy who I rate as the unfunniest guy in the country so not exactly high praise for Alan who is also dire.

Micky Flanagan is another story, very funny.

I mean speaking as a crypto bro she already missed her chance to show she was one of us, by insider-trading her own VP nomination on Polymarket

Especially as Monkhouse has been dead these past ten years.
Monkhouse was great, it is that unfunny clown Carr I was talking about , and threw in the equally bad and unfunny Corden for good measure.
Corden has a talent for physical theatre unmatched in anyone else I've seen. I saw him in One Man Two Governors and I'd say his was the funniest performance I've ever seen on stage.
Jimmy Carr though is certainly not to my taste, I just don't find him funny, although I've not seen him live. Stewart Lee is probably the funniest stand up comedian I've seen live.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/14/weight-loss-jabs-get-britain-working-wes-streeting/

Completely, for most people the most important requirement is calories. In hospital you are probably going to want to get them easily through sugars, with salt and fluids because of the risk of dehydration.
It's an issue for kids at school as well. Unless they have something wrong with them kids will pick up all they need from just the normal variety of foods they eat. Even if they are chips and sausages every day, theyll get the most important stuff. It's only real long term failure to get certain minerals and vitamins that can become a problem, but not much, a growing kid needs 99.99% calories.
