“The UK Independence Party has announced that it suspended its General Secretary Roger Bird on the 7th of December following allegations of impropriety.
Shortly after a claim came to light about the conduct of Mr Bird with regard to candidate selection, the UK Independence Party took action swiftly and decisively, including steps involving external Human Resources consultants, as well as following due process and the Party’s Constitution to the letter.
Unfortunately, UKIP has had to suspend Mr Bird pending a full investigation into allegations made against him. The party has acted swiftly and decisively and will not tolerate impropriety of any kind amongst its staff.”

Seriously, the cheerleaders won't accept this but UKIP's brand is getting damaged. It's not Ratners yet but it is the most disliked party I believe (apologies if wrong) and that ain't about to turn around, anything but.0 -

What might make this particularly interesting is that it relates to candidate selection, which does seem to have been causing a lot of dissension in the party recently. For the latest example:

How many times did we hear that during the run up to the Euro elections when there was a full on media onslaught even from certain right of centre papers that many UKIP voters read (hurrah for the attacks on UKIP...)?taffys said:Seriously, the cheerleaders won't accept this but UKIP's brand is getting damaged.
Much better to attack the party's shortcomings, surely, than to insult those toying with the idea of voting for them.
Farage is making a point of winding up those who will never vote for him, goading them into loud and shrill denunciations of him (in the absurd language of those who think their view is the correct view and are aghast that people in large numbers agree with Farage). He is to my mind putting clear purple water between his party and these people, winding them up as effectively as Ali G did.
For reasons only known to themselves, Cameron & his high tories thought it was a good idea to insult and abuse the people who voted for him to please the guardianistas and others who would never ever vote for him however much he appeased them.
What will make or break the UKIP brand is how their newly elected MPs in 2015 behave and perform in parliament, including the new party leader that will inevitably follow before the 2020 election. The rest is just noise.
However for the first time in decades, certainly since the new "Gramasican" left took over Labour after Gaitskills death, the British people have on the ballot paper a broadly socially conservative small "c" conservative party of ordinary working and lower middle class people with a serious chance of electing a caucus of MPs, and certainly the first time such a party has been on offer that is not tainted either by socialism or the desires of the aristocracy. The reaction of the established parties is, I suspect, similar and similarly counter productive to their reaction when Labour first started winning seats at the turn of the 20th century.

Yes, too much of Libdem stance for retaining incumbent MPS is based around the concept that the Liberals did the right thing for the good of the country over the good of their party by going into coalition. Flouncing out would leave them with nothing.TheScreamingEagles said:Fyi I expect the coalition to go the very end.
Of coruse that dosen't stop the conservatives doing something in say late February that makes the Libdems utterly apoplectic to intentionally topple the coalition for exactly that reason though, and then saying well we did our best but the Libdems couldn't cope with government and flounced out.....
Overall though I expect the coalition to last the course. I suspect the Queen, using her all powerful soft power, was instrumental in ensuring the coalition happened and would take a very dim view of anyone who collapsed it and jeopardised the stablility of the UK.

If you cook a meal from scratch it costs about a tenth of a ready meal. For two generations people haven't been taught basic home economics (ie how to cook nutritious food cheaply from scratch). You only have to look in a supermarket to see that it is the least educated, least well off who are piling their trolleys with expensive ready meals and think pizza or microwaved ready meals are a suitable main meal.
Another example of how socialism has destroyed the working classes.
I'm lucky, my wife was an immigrant from a country with no social security (another immigrant who will be voting UKIP BTW). Despite there being eight of us, our weekly supermarket shop rarely goes over £120 - including soap poweder etc. - because she cooks from scratch (other than Saturdays) and I grow some of it on an allotment. She once made a delicious soup out of brocolli stalks left over after the broccoli had been eaten.0 -

The reason people are voting UKIP rather than Con is nothing to do with the language anyone (whether Con or UKIP) is using about anything.
It is far, far simpler than that. Per Populus:
Q: Would you say the long-term economic plan is working for you and your family?
Net scores (ie Yes minus No)
Con +40
Lab -69
LD -6
UKIP -57
Just look at that UKIP score - massively negative, almost as negative as Lab.
As usual, hard core political enthusiasts on here are worried about language, what X is saying, what Y is reporting etc etc etc.
Forget it - it's all irrelevant. If those UKIP supporters start feeling better off they'll go back to Con. If they don't, they won't. Dead simple.

Luxury!0 -
Smoking in particular is worth focussing on here, not least because the Feeding Britain report offers this thought:
“A family earning £21,000 a year, for example, where both parents smoke 20 cigarettes a day will spend a quarter of their income on tobacco. Even if people buy illicit tobacco they will still spend 15% of their total income on tobacco. Budgeting support is terribly important, but budgetary support alone is often not enough to equip families to kick their addictive habits when addiction is being fed and defended by some very powerful lobbies.”

You are dreaming if you think it costs 10%, by that reckoning people equivalent to yourself would be spending over £1000 weekly at supermarket. It is also very time consuming to cook your own meals , but has benefits of you know whats in it and much better taste normally. Nothing wrong with a good pizza either if again you make it yourself.Paul_Mid_Beds said:

Also I fail to see the significance of being an immigrant to know how to cook. There are two of us and my wife cooks all meals but we still spend £200 a week , again down to what you purchase not the fact that you cook from scratch rather than buy ready meals.0 -

I said here the other day, when everyone was patting each other on the back for criticising Farage about what he didnt say about breast feeding, that it wouldn't surprise me if the LBC interviews were engineered to give him the chance to sound reasonable about a topical issue, but in a way that would attract hyperbole from UKIP haters...AndyJS said:
Perhaps that's because the sort of people who support or are thinking about supporting UKIP are people who regard those stories as silly tittle-tattle detached from the issues they most care about. Each time one of then hits the front pages, UKIP support rises or remains the same, while the 75% who dislike the party continue to dislike them as before.FrancisUrquhart said:It seems that UKIP being bashed in the media, bashed by all the comics, boobgate, traffic gate, insert-gate, bashed generally doesn't seem to do them any harm at all.
They then fall over themselves to be as critical as possible, ignoring all facts in the hope that it will deflate the UKIP bubble, when in reality it just pumps it up even more.. people see through the faux outrage
Conservatives sounding like Guardianistas is the recipe for UKIP growth
http://blogs.spectator.co.uk/coffeehouse/2014/12/nick-clegg-and-nigel-farage-are-pursuing-the-same-electoral-strategy/
'faux outrage' thats really funny coming from the kipper ilk. Faux synthetic hypoerbolic outrage at everything conceivable. Mr Grumpy incarnate. Short of a vote or two - whip up a frenzy.
At every turn we see UKIP apologists, candidates, would be candidates, officials, leaders, deputy leaders and every spokesman you care to mentions spouting endless claptrap which is aimed at so clearly whipping up anti foreigner immigrant coloured and religious prejudice all cloaked in such increasingly glaring racist cant that it is impossible to ignore.
But to be fair to Farage he is willing to leave no unimaginably small intolerant stone unturned in his gubby search for votes, 'Pardon me Mr Voter let me polish that chip on your shoulder.'
'ting tongs', voices on the tube, the overseas neighbours, breast feeding in the corner, traffic jams full of immigrants. And this is before gets all angry at stopping people profiteering from selling poppies.
Lets be really really clear - I cannot believe that Farage knows his voters. There can surely be no way that British people, British people that civilised the world and saved the world and are renowned throughout the world for tolerance, can be so low crass and ignorant and downright shabby enough to vote for this man in any numbers. It would be appalling.

The feeling then was that public services were in crisis and needed massive investment. I'd be delighted if Osborne wanted to argue on that territory. The Tories are way out of line with public opinion on this. I did a Yougov today that suggested voters were evenly split on whether the government should prioritise deficit reduction and amongst those who thought it a priority, people were evenly split on whether tax rises or spending cuts should be the primary method of balancing the books. Of course the image the public have of politicians arguably matters far more than where their policies are on the spectrum. Labour needs to be clear that it will raise tax as well as cut spending and to hell with the tabloid/Tory reaction. The polls suggest that is where the centre is.FrancisUrquhart said:The chancellor claims he is being straight with voters over spending cuts but he is reluctant to spell out the consequences of returning to levels of spending as a share of national income not seen for 80 years.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30384643
The BBC are going to push this BS line all the way to the GE and conveniently forgetting that 1998 it was basically the same.
If Osborne had been a tiny bit cleverer he could have fiddled his figures to make them exactly the same as say 1998, and claim look was 98/99 so bad?

But the only reason the country isn't bankrupt is because people receiving welfare benefits give a disproportionate amount of them straight back to the government in excise duties on drinking and smoking, along with the stupidity tax (the lottery).FrancisUrquhart said:Smoking in particular is worth focussing on here, not least because the Feeding Britain report offers this thought:
“A family earning £21,000 a year, for example, where both parents smoke 20 cigarettes a day will spend a quarter of their income on tobacco. Even if people buy illicit tobacco they will still spend 15% of their total income on tobacco. Budgeting support is terribly important, but budgetary support alone is often not enough to equip families to kick their addictive habits when addiction is being fed and defended by some very powerful lobbies.”

AS far as the Tories are concerned.. having the BBC involved in political debate is equivalent to playing with a ref who is a member of the opposition club.0

In this case the victim was laying into a member of the panel's son on twitter (this is all according to media reports). The panel member spoke to the individual and then followed up with an email basically telling him not to. The victim felt "threatened" by this & therefore the panel member should resign.
Now, possibly it was foolish of the panel member to have a direct correspondence of this nature. But equally, we must be careful not to put the victims on a pedestal because of what they have suffered in the past.0 -

Be prepared to be appalled, Mr. Path. If the polls are to be believed a significant minority of voters are prepared to vote UKIP. Maybe Farage does know his voters but you do not.Flightpath said:
... I cannot believe that Farage knows his voters. There can surely be no way that British people, British people that civilised the world and saved the world and are renowned throughout the world for tolerance, can be so low crass and ignorant and downright shabby enough to vote for this man in any numbers. It would be appalling.0 -

So, it looks like AV could benefit the Tories if the UKIP candidate dropped out before they did, if Green, Labour or LD preferences were all used though would benefit LDs or Labour
FrankBooth The LDs suprisingly actually have the strongest position, saying they will eliminate deficit by end of 2018, but use tax rises as well as spending cuts and then allow spending to rise but only in line with gdp0 -

UKIP to trigger first Commons debate this week
The subject?.....0 -
It speaks volumes about how detached the Westminster bubble is from the real world that the Lib Dems' position of "only modestly terrible spending cuts" counts as a moderate position, when in the real world anywhere between 60% and 80% of the public are against any further spending cuts at all, according to the polls.HYUFD said:So, it looks like AV could benefit the Tories if the UKIP candidate dropped out before they did, if Green, Labour or LD preferences were all used though would benefit LDs or Labour

I'm getting a bit fed up with all the anti-Ukip stuff. The left should be focusing its guns on the real enemy not an immigration protest party that most voters don't appear to like. From what I've seen anti-Ukip hostility seems to be highest amongst middle class yuppies who think Nick Clegg has been unfairly maligned, are satisfied with post-Thatcher Britain and think bashing Ukip means they have a social conscience in contrast to their general disregard for those less fortunate than themselves.Socrates said:

In saying that the will eliminate the deficit by tax rises as well as spending cuts the Lib Dems might have the most honest position, but in political terms I doubt it is the strongest.HYUFD said:So, it looks like AV could benefit the Tories if the UKIP candidate dropped out before they did, if Green, Labour or LD preferences were all used though would benefit LDs or Labour

Mind you no party seems to want to say who are going to be paying the extra taxes that would be required to the level to fend off serious spending cuts. Can't imagine why no one wants to be that honest.0 -
A potential bomb on the government's feet: The Return Of The Eurocrisis.
Greece to speed up it's presidential election for Dec. 17th after they got a 2 month extension from the eurogroup on the bailout negotiations.
The rules are that the greek president must be elected by at least 180 MP's after 3 rounds of voting until Dec.27th, if not then it's early elections on Jan.25th and the radical left is ahead by around 6 points in the opinion polls.

Presently the government has only 156 MP's.0 -

Malcolm: Yes 10% is probably an exaggeration but the point is valid. Especially as profit markups are apparently much higher for ready meals than separate ingredients.
Re Immigrants. If you come from a country with no welfare you either learn the basics or starve when things go wrong. So you see to it that your children learn the basics. Over here such basics are seen as anti feminist and frowned upon. Its one big reason why immigrants do much better than the locals. They know how to live very cheaply and have a work ethic derived from a work or starve culture. Hence they work hard, spend little, put the difference into savings and make something of their lives. Sadly the British welfare classes have never been taught the self discipline to do that because in liberal Britain self discipline is a dirty word.
You may think it odd that someone supporting UKIP says this. However the UKIP candidate for Tooting puts it much better than I can.
"So, the UKIP contender for Chuka's seat in Streatham, Bruce Machan came to Britain from Zimbabwe about the same time I came over here from Poland, and I am standing for UKIP in Tooting, which is just to the West. Directly North of Chuka's constituency, in Vauxhall, UKIP is represented by Ace Nnorom who is originally from Cameroon.
And on the East side of things Chuka is flanked by UKIP's Parliamentary Candidate for Dulwich and West Norwood Rathy Alagaratnam who is Tamil and came to Britain from Sri Lanka. And of course to the South, we have Winston McKenzie who is challenging Croydon North for UKIP -- Winston was born in Jamaica and has been suggested by Lee Jasper recently to be the most influential Black politician in Britain.
In fact, it may be inferred that UKIP is likely fielding the most ethnically diverse suite of candidates out of all the parties in South London. That is because all of us feel strongly about being British, whilst UKIP provides us with a truly meritocratic political platform, something that cannot be said of the LibLabCon establishment parties catering almost exclusively for the London upper middle classes....
Lastly, it is also worth pointing out there is only one party in the UK which has been continuously beating the drum for the Commonwealth and promoting Commonwealth free trade to ensure Britain does not miss out on unprecedented global growth. That party is UKIP.
UKIP wants a global Great Britain, not the little England on the sidelines of the European Union which we have become under the last two governments. This UKIP affinity for the Commonwealth is further reflected in our above mentioned South London UKIP candidates, four of whom were born in Commonwealth countries.http://www.thecommentator.com/article/5374/tooting_view_we_re_back_to_racism_smears_against_ukip0 -
