Yes, but where are people going to park? Salisbury's economy is going to suffer unless they concrete over all that green space.

What's the accessibility like? Really needs a dual carriageway to carry visitors to the cathedral.

And why even have a cathedral? This country is now secular. That space could be used for at least 20 detached homes (plastic grass to reduce maintenance costs).

Israel launches 'extensive' strikes in Lebanon after rockets hit army base

Four people have been killed in an "extensive wave" of Israeli air strikes in Lebanon launched after Hezbollah rocket fire killed a soldier in Israel.

A woman and two children were killed in the southern Lebanese town of Souaneh, state media and security sources said.

A man who Hezbollah identified as one of its fighters was killed in Aadchit.

Israel's military said it hit Hezbollah infrastructure in response to a deadly rocket attack on its base in the northern Israeli town of Safed.

It's a broader problem with taxation and incentives for vehicles. Policies that make sense for the 80% of us who live in urban areas completely screw the rural economy, most obviously fuel duty.

Some people on the left/green side also support mileage taxation, which is just insane imo. We want to tax short, urban journeys, not long ones in rural areas.
We should forcibly move all Green MSPs to Wick and and see how they get to Holyrood in their electric cars / Stagecoach buses / cancelled Scotrail trains.

See WW2 for how it can work. D-Day - three national armies invaded Normandy, without a formal alliance, under a unified command structure. No need to make it too complex.
You say without a formal alliance, but 2 of them had the same head of state.

The Scottish Nationalists have found the latest controversy that they want to concentrate on. Apparently those students of Scottish history have discovered that the cafe in Edinburgh Castle is called the Redcoat Cafe. In fact it has been called that since it opened nearly 30 years ago.

Clearly changing this calumny is now a priority for the Scottish Government.

I feel somewhat ambivalent. When they are wasting time on this nonsense at least they are not screwing up something more important.
  • Some sort of European version of Nato minus the United States would seem more likely.

In other news and I'm sorry if this has already been posted but we have footage of a police officer in Edinburgh telling a Jewish person to hide their star of David as it may 'trigger' a group of protesters. Why aren't you all as angry about this as you are with the Tories and their failings?

    https://twitter.com/antisemitism/status/1757759542551548181

'At a rally in Edinburgh, a PoliceScotland officer asked a Jewish bystander to hide his Star of David, to avoid “triggering” the protesters.

The police officer is clearly worried that he and his colleagues are heavily outnumbered and that these protesters could pose a threat to Jews, but his response was effectively to stop a passing Jewish man and ask him to hide his identity before continuing on his way.

Whose rights are actually being protected here, those of law-abiding people or those of mobs of extremists who might be “triggered” by people being Jewish in public?'

They'll be telling women not to go out at night or wear short skirts next.

It's a tough battle for those who do want to do something.
Given the composition of the Supreme Court, it would take a legislative supermajority to make any significant difference.

And as we know, Congress is essentially 50/50 between those who care about the victims, and those who don't.

Sorry, not aware of this. Is this a new portal system for the classification of road traffic offences? I am aware that death by dangerous driving is being given a higher priority now but this is a Scotland wide feature.

In reality, most road traffic offences that used to clutter the lower courts are no longer being prosecuted at all. Police numbers are apparently at a record low and seem to spend most of their time dealing with hate crimes on the internet.
  • We really need a picture with @IanB2 for scale!
Last year, I did a rare thing for me, and posted some pictures on Facebook from a local walk I had done.

Some of my family said I had slipped up by leaving my back-pack in the picture, but it was deliberate - to give an idea of the scale - the bicycle seat was about 6 foot off the ground.

Close to retirement age is roughly where the swing voters are, right now.

Bigger problem is that voters mostly don't mind too much when politicians change what they say in opposition. See Dave the Chameleon.

They're a bit less happy when there's a contradiction between what they say and what they do in government, but even that tends to be forgiven as long as it turns out fine in the end.

I'd heard at least 5% will select any option on a poll no matter how absurd or obviously silly our of sheer randomness or stupidity. This is well beyond that - around 40% of americans don't believe the results of elections, so 1 in 5 believing in that does not surprise in the slightest.

I was surprised, when visiting the William Wallace memorial at Smithfield, how little it was known about, even by the habituees of the local pubs.
There’s tons of London history like that. It it wasn’t for the blue plaques, lots of it would be completely invisible.

I had to tell my future wife (Peruvian) about the significance of 58 Grafton Way and the statues near by. Which she was living round the corner from.

We already sing that bloody dirge called Flower of Scotland at them in every rugby match. Isn't that enough?

Not quite, but we had the biggest for decades recently just along the coast, closing one of the main roads into town, and two local roads and a footpath are still closed due to various smaller landslides. We’re getting nearer the sea, every day….

I'm very much in favour of telling history through brief descriptions on plaques. You can walk through Westminster Hall and see metal plates on the floor and go "Oh, I see Nelson Mandela spoke here in 1996, that's interesting" then walk a few more steps and go "Oh, and they tried Charles I for high treason here too. Why are these plates placed so randomly?"

Some serious trolling from the Kremlin house elf.

Putin says he’d rather have Biden as President than Trump. “He’s more experienced, he’s predictable, he’s an old-school politician.”

He doubts Biden’s age makes him “incapable.” When they met Biden was “nothing of the sort.” “Who of us hasn’t banged their head on something?”

Lots of replies from Americans who show no sign of appreciating his sarcasm.

Love it that Crawley and Duckett are 6'5" and 5'7".

...The most impressive figures will follow in the next Test at Rajkot, though. Two more innings as a pair will take them to 27 together, making them England’s longest-lasting Test opening partnership since Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook were kicking it together more than a decade ago. Rory Burns and Dom Sibley stuck it out for 26 innings, but they played a very different game to these two...

A London tour stopping at only little known sights and blue plaques would be much more interesting than the usual Buckingham Palace, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London type of tour.

Very good ad, but 20%+ of Americans are locked into a right-wing bubble where they believe Taylor Swift is a psy-op agent. How do you stop that?

Cutting media and advertising jobs and reinvesting the savings into useful jobs would help our balance of payments.

In Rochdale, Azhar Ali's leaflets for Labour went out in free Royal Mail delivery last night/this morning. I hear there are 24,000 postal voters in Rochdale - a third -
much more than normal - & they'll get their ballots on Saturday.

If you look on the web, people have created self guided tours round places like Bloomsbury based on the blue plaques.

I don't think most of them really believe it, they're just enjoying themselves by pretending to. But that in itself is very stupid.

I think it is comforting to think that, but when 20% say it I think we have to assume some number of that amount genuinely believe it.

Absolutely. Biden has nothing to lose. Change the constitution. Ban the fucking things and let Trump and his idiot followers argue otherwise.

Have there ever been any polls regarding the banning of guns?

Good question. I’d imagine there would be a small majority in favour of retaining them. But, fuck it. Leaders gotta lead. Ban the fucking things Biden and let Trump argue against it.
