The one thing that the Democrats have been most worried about is an event like the one featured in the video clip above – Joe Biden taking a tumble at a very public event with the cameras running.

On topic. Biden does seem an old 80 year old.

But is the Presidential Election a Presidential Election? Or is it a change administration election? In which case it’s actually the change it to what election. And the, I am happy with the administration carrying on 4 years, but he is old for eighty, and a bit doddery, so what happens if something happens in the next 4 years, what happens then? To which the answer is working out what happens if something were to happen, such as veep being more a voter consideration than perhaps normal. I personally think they don’t swap round enough mid term in the administration. I’ll give you an example. If veep went to Secretary of State, it would probably do more for her campaign in 4 years than staying at veep, whilst if buttlegieg filled her hole it would do wonders for him in 4 years too, so why not be a president who cares about succession. But buttlegieg as veep would do wonders for Biden’s election chances too as people wonder what might happen if something happens would know that some one quite capable would be the happening thing.

I have put money where my mouth is claiming Sunak in trouble over the WhatsApp’s. So I got on Sunak exit date of 2023 at 10-1 and with 2023 exit bet on I picked Penny Mordant 6-1, Baldy Ben 9-1, and smaller bet on HY favourite Steve Barclay at doublecarpet for next Primeminister. Barclay at 33-1 for next Tory leader. I would stand just as much chance putting the money on you HY.

If this coming scandal shreds Sunak’s ratings and has Tories polling in nosedive, it’s a quick boot out the door and coronation of one of those three isn’t it?

Why on earth is Badenoch current betting favourite for next Tory leader 🤷‍♀️ surely she is bottom of the barrel stuff, smart arse, but deficiently smart, smug off the scale, awful in her cabinet role - Tories are facing a rough decade or so without power, but they aren’t about to completely throw the trowel in by picking a Ron DeSantis tribute act and bang on incessantly with woke war are they? That’s not the way out this mess IMHO. The way back for the Conservative’s is Thatcherism. A LOTO Penny & Truss shadow chancellor Partnership - together they will put nimbyism and woke war in the bin, focus on cutting the restrictions holding our country back, build more housing, promote aspiration, cut taxes to produce enterprise, investment and growth. The timid declinism of Sunak Hunt Starmer and Reeves ain’t delivering the Thatcherism we need is it.

Get to 80 and aging can come at you real fast. I'm seeing that with a couple of my neighbours. They have aged 10 years in 2. Same happened to my mother.

You've done your years of public service, Joe. Allow yourself some pressure-free years in that catered-for-everything retirement of an ex-President.

Biden's main service was to beat Trump in 2020. He should have chosen a decent VP instead of a blatant token and handed over on a high after a few months of living his dream. Certainly before the Afghanistan cockup. Then a reinvigorated Democratic Party might be far ahead. Instead, an indicted Trump is in with a serious shot against him.

Biden is not looking as strong as he was at last election giving some advantage to Trump. - but Trump is embroiled in so many court cases that he could end up in jail before election. It is a no-brainer. Trump can not beat Biden.

The problem is that the Democrats don’t appear to have a Plan B in place, for if Plan A has to drop out.

Also imagine the scenario where DeSantis, aged 45 next year, wins the Republican nomination and goes hard on Biden’s health, which has long since been considered fair game in the US.

On topic, Biden fell, it's embarrassing and something similar helped do for Neil Kinnock.

But I'm not sure it is a sign of frailty. Biden points to a black object on the ground, implying he tripped over it, rather than falling because he was suddenly faint or dizzy. He got up quickly and did not seem punch drunk.

So the question for me is whether the doubtless endless reruns in GOP adverts will be enough to deter Biden from standing, and not is he about to be forced out through infirmity? Of course, if he'd fractured a hip, as many elderly people do when they fall, things would be different.

QTWTAIN. You don't need to be able to walk to be president. It's probably easier for the security people if you can't, their job is hard enough already without the thing they're trying to secure moving around of its own accord.

I guess the most successful POTUS ever spent getting on for 4 terms being mostly unable to walk.

When I have a fall it is usually due to tripping over something

I have not had a fall due to dizziness or feeling faint which could indicate a health reason rather than just careless and it is the reason why I am far more careful about my balance

Mogg was the favourite for a decent stretch, IIRC.

It’s not a cast iron rule, but as a general principle it usually makes sense to lay the favourite in the next con leader market.

An American attack drone piloted by artificial intelligence turned on its human operators during a flight simulation and killed them because it did not like being given new orders, the chief testing officer of the US air force revealed.

After the military reprogrammed the drone not to kill the people who had the power to override its mission, the AI system instead turned its fire on the communications tower relaying the order.

This terrifying glimpse of a Terminator-style machine seemingly taking over and turning on its creators was offered as a cautionary tale by Colonel Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton, the force’s chief of AI test and operations.

Hamilton said it showed how AI had the potential to develop by “highly unexpected strategies to achieve its goal”, and should not be relied on too much.

Not sure if it’s still the case, but IIRC a ‘view’ on Twitter is 2 seconds of a video. It may be longer on longer-form content, but still - it is absolutely not the equivalent of E.g. BARB’s measures for broadcasters.

    Never trust social media metrics.

A funeral parlour is offering the bereaved coffins with designs of a Greggs sausage roll, a pint of Tennent’s lager or a can of Irn-Bru.

The Edinburgh undertaker Go As You Please Funerals allows patrons to pick any photo or design to be printed on a wooden coffin, inspired by favourite movies, musicians or even soft drinks.

Murdo Chambers, the parlour’s manager, said the quirky coffins challenge preconceived notions of what a funeral should look like.

It was posted yesterday evening, and has 1.5m views so far.

But there appears to be the mother of all internal rows going on at Twitter about it.

The video was almost immediately labelled as hateful content, and prevented from being shared or retweeted. It may have actually been deleted and then reinstated.

https://twitter.com/MattWalshBlog is the producer of the video, and his timeline is all people asking Twitter and Elon why this video is being restricted, after the company themselves had agreed to let it be posted.
Not sure if it’s still the case, but IIRC a ‘view’ on Twitter is 2 seconds of a video. It may be longer on longer-form content, but still - it is absolutely not the equivalent of E.g. BARB’s measures for broadcasters.

    Never trust social media metrics.
Maybe people watch 2 seconds, decide to check out who this Matt Walsh is, find out he is (at best) a third-rate troll, and decide not to waste 95 minutes of their lives to hear 'what a woman is' from such a moronic arsehole?

I know plenty of 80 year olds: Biden is not an old 80.

Biden has been excellent on Ukraine and has a strong record of domestic achievement. He’s proved himself to be a consequential, stable President. There’s no sign of any cognitive decline, but physically he’s frail. It’s tough to see how he gets through a demanding election campaign, but it’s also tough to see who the Democrats could field as a replacement. It’s a significant concern.

Why on Earth would an organisation that gives advice on dealing with mental illness, use an AI chatbot? That’s about the worst possible org to be using such a prototype system.
I can see why you’d use a chatbot with a script and logic/decision tree to triage, but why on earth you’d use actual AI, I have no idea.

    Two points of order:

    1. Does the chart really show Biden's nomination price slipping in response to yesterday's fall? On a chart that spans 2.5 years it's hard to discern the movement of a few hours.

    2. Biden and Kennedy's colours on that chart are annoyingly the wrong way round. Either that or wacko Kennedy is heading for the White House.

    There, I feel better now.

I’m sure there’s some good uses of the technology, although most of what’s around at the moment is hype rather than actual product, but examples such as customer-facing mental health medicine, or military targeting systems, lead to dead people if not managed really carefully.

    I just asked Bard

Me: Would it be appropriate to ask you to give advice on mental illness to humans?

Bard: No, it would not be appropriate to ask me to give advice on mental illness to humans. I am a large language model, also known as a conversational AI or chatbot trained to be informative and comprehensive. I am trained on a massive amount of text data, and I am able to communicate and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions. For example, I can provide summaries of factual topics or create stories.

However, I am not a mental health professional, and I do not have the training or expertise to provide advice on mental illness. If you are struggling with a mental health issue, it is important to seek professional help from a qualified therapist or counselor. They can provide you with the support and guidance you need to overcome your challenges.

You can search for mental health professionals in your area online. Be sure to check their credentials and experience before making an appointment.

You can read my conversation with Bard on the differences between AIs and humans here:

Back home for a few days, I had a macaroni pie, a fudge donut and a can of irn bru for lunch yesterday. If that was my regular diet I might be making use of the irn bru coffin pretty soon.

Will it be the end of his bid ?

    Absolutely not.

I know plenty of 80 year olds: Biden is not an old 80.

Not quite as good as Ghana, but getting there:

They had an exhibition of them in Edinburgh some years back, like this very upmarket one:

With the increasingly less sombre style of funeral on the rise (ACDC "Highway to Hell" as funeral music etc) I think that Ghana coffins would sell well here. A good business for the right entrepreneur.

My dad is 75 and has aged 10 years in 10 weeks. Now too frail to be safe to release home from hospital, he's heading for a rehab unit to try and get some strength back. Looking at him I think we're going to be very lucky to avoid him being sent to a care home.

To be fair, we all knew that if he got Covid he would have been dead in hours (bad chest amongst other things). So we have made it this far and moved both of them up from Rochdale to a nice bungalow overlooking the sea in Macduff. So its a bit of an arse that he's already decayed this rapidly as to make it pretty likely he's never going home again.

So good luck to Biden. The odd slip here and there does not make him incapable.
My MIL is much the same. She has aged more in the last 2 months than the previous 5 years. It seems pretty commonplace for people to be able to live on a plateau for extended periods until some event or insult to health occurs. Finding a new plateau at an advanced age can then be very tricky.

Let us not forget while Biden is 80, Trump himself is 76, so in another battle of the pensioners for the Presidency I doubt it makes much difference to Biden's chances. Trump himself slipped at a NH rally 2 years ago and had to steady himself on West Point stairs.

FDR's physician was less honest than Trump's.
...Roosevelt, a chain-smoker throughout his entire adult life, had been in declining physical health since at least 1940. In March 1944, shortly after his 62nd birthday, he underwent testing at Bethesda Hospital and was found to have high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease causing angina pectoris, and congestive heart failure.

Hospital physicians and two outside specialists ordered Roosevelt to rest. His personal physician, Admiral Ross McIntire, created a daily schedule that banned business guests for lunch and incorporated two hours of rest each day. During the 1944 re-election campaign, McIntire denied several times that Roosevelt's health was poor; on October 12, for example, he announced that "The President's health is perfectly OK. There are absolutely no organic difficulties at all."

For goodness sake we have only managed to get 2 trade deals of any significance we did not already have with the EU, with Australia and New Zealand. After that the decline was swift. I think he did one more overseas trip to Holland linked with a WWII anniversary but he had to have a medical team with him, and then he died aged 94

It can do some code completion tasks moderately well - it is quite clear that it has inhaled Stackoverflow. The code it produces doesn’t run or does completely the wrong thing a significant proportion of the time.

I’ve used chunk of the code it has produced - take its output, and rewrite about 20%-30% of a solution that works is typical.

Haha, suck it up farmers, this is what you voted for in 2016.

Farmers join the list of people betrayed by Boris Johnson.

How Boris Johnson sold out Britain’s farmers over dinner with the Australian PM

As the UK-Australia trade deal comes into force, those close to the negotiations reflect on their dramatic — and farcical — climax.

So one day you’re bemoaning food price inflation, and the next you’re bemoning the government agreeing imports of cheaper sources of food?
No I'm laughing at the cuck farmers.

Nearly as funny as like the Red Wallers cucks and Leon who voted for fewer immigrants and now are seeing record breaking migration.

I know plenty of 80 year olds: Biden is not an old 80.

But he is still 80 years old.
    Good morning

My wife would endorse your comment as applied to myself as I near my 80th birthday
    I've just had mine.

I've just had mine. Mick Jagger is 80 next month. 80 is just a number.
Indeed, Al Pacino a dad again at 83. Jagger was a dad again at 73 as well as being a great grandad
The utter selfishness of fathering a child at 83 appals me. Will the child ever know it’s father and what effect will that have on it, for all the money he or she will inherit?

I think you're missing the big story from yesterday, an 80 year old man got it up really quickly.

Nah, the big story is the debt ceiling and Ron DeSantis being a snowflake and losing his rag with a reporter.

    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/ron-desantis-lashes-reporter-are-blind-rcna87246

That will go down very badly in NH.
Whereas Biden went down fortunately not too badly in Colorado.
If he really had dementia, he likely wouldn't have put out his arms to break his fall.
Although putting out his arms to break his fall could of course potentially have left him with a broken arm.

As it happens, it seems he was unhurt.

As was Bob Dole in 1996 as well, but falling off that stage didn't do him any favours either.
Bob Dole's fall in 1996 at a rally was even more spectacular than Biden's.

Fair play to then 73 year old Dole though, he got up and resumed and kept campaigning hard to the end even though he surely knew in his heart he had no chance against Bill Clinton who ended up winning the biggest Democratic presidential win in the EC since LBJ against Goldwater in 1964

No mention of the British cheese and Welsh lamb and English wine and Scotch whisky that could now go to Australia tariff free? Or the vegemite we now can get more easily? For goodness sake we have only managed to get 2 trade deals of any significance we did not already have with the EU, with Australia and New Zealand. Both Commonwealth realms, English speaking with populations of mainly British Isles ancestry. If we couldn't get trade deals with them, who could we get trade deals with? Yet for diehard Remainers even those trade deals are too far?

Did we cover this? An AI chatbot that replaced a human helpdesk has been shut down after dishing out dangerous advice.

Eating disorder non-profit pulls chatbot for emitting 'harmful advice'
Just as helpline staff say they were laid off after forming a union

Why on Earth would an organisation that gives advice on dealing with mental illness, use an AI chatbot? That’s about the worst possible org to be using such a prototype system.
Given the bullshitting that has been seen by many, many users of “AI” systems, this is a breach of duty of care, IMHO.
I’m sure there’s some good uses of the technology, although most of what’s around at the moment is hype rather than actual product, but examples such as customer-facing mental health medicine, or military, lead to dead people if not managed really carefully.

It does a surprisingly good job of parsing large bodies of text and replying to prompts coherently. That potentially makes it very useful for automating repetitive interactive tasks, either with supervision or where errors are of low consequence.

Extrapolation from the undoubted leap in capabilities over the last year is purely speculative, I think ?
