I have spoken to the Prime Minister to tender my resignation as Secretary of State for Health & Social Care. It has been an enormous privilege to serve in this role, but I regret that I can no longer continue in good conscience. pic.twitter.com/d5RBFGPqXp

    Ultimately any leader relies on the team that supports them. You simply cannot keep embarrassing them and demanding of them. At some point they ask what they are getting out of it.

    Do Tory MPs and Members punish the first big beasts to go though, as not being loyal, even if they agree Boris needs to go?

    Boris Johnson Premiership - 2 years 346 days and counting

    Theresa May Premiership - 3 years 11 days.

    He should manage to get past that without a mass resignation and coronation.

    In defence of Javid, who no doubt is partially motivated by an attempt top sieze momentum and take the top job for himself, we know for a fact that he has been willing to resign before on at least some point of principle. So in part it may be genuine.

    It's barely 2.5 years since the GE, which he won handsomely. Covid disrupted his intended plans, but also meant 'normal' politics was more or less suspended.

    How the heck has he gotten himself in a position where a majority of backbenchers and now many in the Cabinet want him out? No one who wins that big should make themselves so vulnerable.
