I'm tempted to say no. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
So even if he wins the election according to the rules, he mustn’t be allowed to win?

And you claim to be both liberal and a democrat?

Did the Kremlin write it for them?
Socialist appeal is funny. Articles espousing the wonders of Russia's peaceful actions to liberate Ukrainian citizens of their lives, a long video (featuring the people's princess Richard Burgon) for members to ram protest motions through Labour CLPs to "defend democracy" and other articles and videos of people demanding revolution against capitalism.

I don't know what they want, but whatever it is I don't want it.

    And this prompt

"a loaf of bread in the shape of a bunny, electrified with lightning throughout it, sitting atop a wooden kitchen counter" #dalle

    Made this. Insanely good

    A computer dude writes:

Search for the #dalle tag and you will be absolutely blown away…and it only gets more capable from here”

It is not up to us to decide, but it is completely reasonable for us to have a view.

My view is Putin is a criminal and should not be allowed to stand. Of course it would be absurd to think that was sufficient for him to be banned. Exactly the same with Trump, we are entitled to a reasonable view on whether he should be eligible to stand, even if it is, of course, not for us to decide what actually happens.

Nice try. That being the case doesn't make a general approach downplaying Russian actions resaonable, given the plethora of evidence of their actions, on top of, you, the launching of an unprovoked invasion.

It's blatant attempts at making an equivalence between the sides, or even painting the victim as the villain of the piece, which get peoples' backs up, not the existence of some instances of war crimes on the Ukrainian side as well.

I seem to have started something by making an innocent joke.

I don't believe Trump should be allowed to be president because I think he should be tried, convicted and put in prison. However if he does stand and does win he should (god help us) be president. My joke was it would be ironic after Trump's attempts if the same happened to him. Honestly humour is in short supply sometimes here or maybe it's me.

In order to get a green card he would have had to have declared himself a permanent resident in the US.

    Drip drip drip

It's not really a drip anymore, it's resignation time. Sunak isn't Boris.
But where will the Big Dog find someone of the right kind of intellect and honesty to join his cabinet and serve in such a key role?

    Step forward Sir Gavin Williamson.

Are the Russians trying to bait the West into getting directly involved or is it a middle finger of look what we can do and you lot can't do a thing about it?

I doubt it, not least because if the Ukrainians are giving them a hammering, imagine what some US made jets and drones could do.
Three days of unrestrained US attacks on Russian troops and equipment in and around Ukraine probably would result in a Russian nuclear response, as there would be no significant Russian military left this side of the Urals.

If NATO does ever get involved directly, I think they'll be very cautious not to be too effective.
Yep. Paradoxically that's the problem isn't it. I suppose the best thing would be to make sure that next time a reckless psychopath is in charge of Russia we don't indulge him for 20 years.
For the next 40 years, by when the institutional memory will have been forgotten.

Isn't it because pharmaceutical companies and health professionals are increasingly restricting lethal injections for executions? Hence shooting, which loads of yanks can do.

Watching the news and hearing what Ukrainians have suffered at the hands of Russian soldiers makes me wish that every single Russian soldier involved in these crimes be hung, drawn and quartered.

    Unworthy of me I know.

But they are behaving like uncivilised savages and that their church is telling them to exterminate the Ukrainian nation shows that the rot has spread far beyond Putin.

    Evening all :)

As someone might have said, you wait ages for a 35% swing and two come along at once.

A very good of local by-election results for the Greens and for the LDs - probably means nothing but I do wonder if we'll see a big anti-duopoly vote in a month's time. That's the thing with anger - it can lash out in all directions.

The expectations management game is under way, it seems, ahead of the local elections. The problem for Labour in London is how well they did last time. The vote split was (roughly) LAB 44, CON 29, LD 13. In councillors that meant 1,128 for Labour, 508 for the Conservatives and 152 for the LDs.

Obviously, we have boundary changes as OGH has noted so Labour, for example, will move up 6 simply because Newham is increasing from 60 to 66 due to rising population whereas other areas will see fewer councillors so councillor numbers may not tell the whole story.

The key is often when councils change hands as we know - can the LDs hold all three of their councils, will the Conservatives hold their seven? We've already some Conservative-inclined claim holding on to Kensington & Chelsea would represent success but if Labour said they'd have a good night if they held Lambeth, no one would be convinced.

There's also the complexity of turnout - last time only Richmond saw a turnout above 50% while in Barking & Dagenham turnout was 29.5%.

Quick Google search to become a PB expert on US tax implications. Apparently when you renounce your green card you need to roll up all your capital gains at the point you exit. You become liable to a potentially very big US tax bill.

Suspect that was part of Sunak's thinking.

The pickle he is in is down to taking very expensive tax advice resulting in non-Dom decisions etc. I would be very surprised if they hadn’t taken tax advice over their US tax status - would be a bit odd.

I have some beetroot in the fridge.
    You Russophobe, you!
I just need the official recipe.
Ukrainian borscht has beetroot… Russian borscht uses cabbage…
There is no thing as Ukrainian borscht as there is no such country as Ukraine - all borscht is Russian as are all Ukrainians….

I've just been listening to the Boris / Scholz press conference, and it's really quite excellent on both sides, though Scholz is being rather cautious on the timescale for a German pivot away from fossil fuels and Russian gas.

If BJ had been this good throughout, we'd be a hell of a lot further forward on Brexit without much of the acrimony, and Macron would be safely locked away somewhere.

I can only conclude that someone has a remote-controlled crushing-on-demand device on BJ's testicles.

Has someone appointed a real dominatrix to BJ's private office?

So the Chancellor is a resident of the US, his wife is a resident of India and yet they somehow manage to spend most of their time in the UK. Are they employing body doubles?

Ha! In one case actually running the UK.

(or should that be ruining the UK?)

I am being a modern parent and allowing the sprog to find their own feat.

That being said, Socialist Appeal was always an absolutely disgusting platform and now publishes a lengthy article called "The War in Ukraine, Fact and Fiction" with headers such as "Defeat or Tactical Withdrawal?", "How the Media Lies", "How Ukrainians make civilians targets", Russian atrocities - Real or Staged?", "A Ukrainian War Crime" etc etc

One day in the hopefully not too distant future he is going to be profoundly ashamed of himself. A valuable life lesson.
Well "A Ukrainian War Crime has been verified by NYT and Independent sources hasnt it?
    Has it?
    Yes
    Since when?
NYT ($) - Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine’s foreign minister, said his country would investigate “isolated incidents” of atrocities in response to a video, verified by The New York Times, that appears to show a group of Ukrainian soldiers killing captured Russian troops.

    https://www.nytimes.com/video/world/europe/100000008293017/kuleba-ukraine-russian-troops-video.html
See Cyclefree's post at 8.12pm UK time.
I saw it. Has noting (or little) to do with fact, that it is in Ukraine's interest to take a hard line on crimes committed by UKR forces.

Personally think there's a difference in degree of responsibility between an army where some members may be guilty of crimes against the law AND their orders, and one where atrocity and terror are encouraged as first principles.

Time for a regency council on which I am prepared to serve on.

The Queen has pulled out of the annual Royal Maundy service for the first time since 1970 and will instead be represented by the Prince of Wales, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

I am even prepared to serve as regent.

    Somebody leaking again...

Documents seen by The Independent show trusts linked to Ms Murty, her family and companies linked to their businesses. In a number of them, Mr Sunak was listed as a beneficiary.

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/rishi-sunak-akshata-murty-tax-haven-b2054179.html

Wow, when her tax affairs first were reported I (a frothing at the mouth tax the rich until their pips squeak left-winger) didn't see what the issue was and felt that the "anger" totally confected.

Now.... now Sunak is showing all the sure foot of a blind arthritic elephant in a over crowded china shop.

The Russian state is a direct descendent of the Mongol Empire. Russians like to think of themselves as Europeans, and heirs to the Roman Empire. They hate it when you remind them of the Mongol influence, but it's true. Tsar Ivan I Kalita was the Mongols' agent in European Russia and collected taxes for them, using their army to destroy his rivals when they defaulted.

Once I learned this, a lot of Russian history made much more sense - certainly there is a line from the Mongol destruction of Baghdad in 1258 to the equally pointless savagery in Ukrainian cities that defy them today.

What if a majority of the 2024 Electoral College voters support him? How about then?
I'm tempted to say no. What's good for the goose is good for the gander.
So even if he wins the election according to the rules, he mustn’t be allowed to win?

And you claim to be both liberal and a democrat?
He should obviously be barred from standing. Anybody who tries to kill democracy deserves to be in prison, not in the corridors of power.
Given some of the things he was on tape saying or doing I am almost surprised he's not been convicted of anything. But the larger part of me knows he could shoot someone in the face and probably not get convicted before the next election.
Money is a very effective pre-judicial line of defence in the USA. It's harder for a rich person to go to jail than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle

The moral of the story is when a mischievous journalist asks what you think of the Prime Ministers calling SKS a paedo DON'T say "If it was me I wouldn't have said that". Say "Under the circumstances I think he was a model of restraint". It could have saved her £11,000,000 quid

Ironically, the Americans got Fat Herman off the morphine and put him on prison rations, which dropped his weight a fair bit. As a result he was fairly alert, mentally, at his trial - by the end of the war he'd been a wreck....

    Very small ones.

This would explain why Sunak appears so small

When he’s in the UK he’s actually one of those holograms in mid series Star Wars, about a foot high standing on a table, talking from afar - in his case Santa Monica, not the Death Star

    There is a fundamental difference.

As several have reminded us, in war there are soldiers all armies, including our own, who have committed or are likely to commit war crimes. Just as there are criminals in all societies.
The difference is whether or not doctrine and training says this is unacceptable, and laws are enforced.

In Russia’s case it is very clear that the commission of war crimes on a grand scale are part and parcel of the design for waging war.
